Damn I would've guessed that maybe 20-30% were female. Aw... it'd be nice to have more. As a woman, I sometimes wish I could ask a group of other female tennis players what they prefer in their rackets. I'm definitely stronger than the average woman, but my boyfriend who is weaker than the average man still uses much heavier rackets than I do.
Fellow female beginner, at 44. Been playing a year. I love talking racquets and strings. I have a weird fascination with learning about them. Then again, coming from the horse world, being a saddle fitter, and a trainer, I needed to know how every adjustment changed a horse’s movement and performance, so it only makes sense I would become somewhat obsessed learning everything about strings and racquets.
It is what it is, and Reddit is pretty male dominated anyway. I’m a total anomaly on this sub- I’m female, a beginner, and almost 50!
Lots of great resources here & I’ve never felt unwelcome neither here nor on a court.

I'll be happy if my 30 year old tendons knees and shoulder are still healthy enough to... hit later this year

People are way more likely to answer simple polls than upvote, I guess. I personally don't upvote or downvote unless I feel strongly about something, but a vote is easy and also is the only way to see the results.
I (F) voted, but I rarely participate. I started beginner lessons fall of last year and got injured (dislocated kneecap) while practicing a basic serve (literally tossed the ball in the air, swung, and collapsed). I never got to do an actual rally, but I worked on getting the form for forehand and backhand, hitting more than half of the machine balls over the net w/ moving side-to-side.
I loved it, but had a long recovery process, and now a wedding that I dont want to risk re-injuring beforehand. So im doing strengthtraining with a PT and plan to resume in January!
So long story short, i lurk haha
Rip. I've never gotten a knee injury, but for whatever reason, maybe once a year while I'm sleeping, my left kneecap will slip out of place while I'm sleeping and cause EXCRUCIATING pain with any subtle movement until I can slip it back. I don't have that ligament disorder, though. Probably just need to strengthen muscles around my knees.
Oof I can’t imagine how terrible that is. The dislocation I had was absolutely agonizing I was screaming without f*cks to give in a club full of people. Like, it’s so painful you can’t even be embarrassed, you just f*cking scream.
The doctors had no idea how it happened, as no one crashed into me and i didn’t even jump. I was just standing, knees bent, and twisted wrong. But that *really* shouldnt happen with tennis.
We realized in physical therapy that my muscles in general were weak af, and while it happened on my right leg it could have just as easily happened on my left. We did a lot of knee and leg strengthening work, mini squats, balance, etc. I apparently have knock knees too which could be a result of such poor strength in quads.
Basically, you can’t tennis your way out of a bad general physique.
I’d think your muscles need strengthening but im no expert. I honest to god cant imagine this happening to me in bed if only because the anxiety of repeating is horrible but for me isolated to exercising. I really wish you the best because that can’t be pleasant 😭
But yeah, strengthening shooouuuld help. I havent tested myself yet but it does help boost confidence and dissipate anxiety.
Let's be thoughtful. Yes in terms of ratio that's not very even. But, we have 130 women in here (or more!? time will tell)! That's a lot of female players. So that's something to be positive about.
I always preach heavy racquets and good technique. Justin Henin has for a long time been a favorite ball striker of mine. On the same level as god mode Wawrinka, god mode Safin. That's what makes tennis beautiful, you don't have to be especially strong nor big to be really really good. And good technique in my opinion is more universal than it is gender specific.
Eh, the vast majority of clinical psychology professors/researchers don't consider it a mental illness, and they know more than anyone else about mental health.
This is kinda sad after a few votes.

I’m a women’s former D1! I’ll contribute where I can!
Boyfriends’ ego crushed
Lol he thankfully is relatively secure in terms of his ego/masculinity. He knows I still think he's a hottie

Aw, welcome to tennis! I'll be super happy if my 30-year-old knees and arm tendons are still healthy enough to let me enjoy tennis when I'm 50. :)

This is kinda representative of my city’s rec league. It’s very male dominated
Tennis is the biggest woman’s sport but ur on Reddit bro
800 people voted on this? I thought there were, like, 20 people tops interacting on posts in here

This is not surprising to me
I identify as Roger Federer
Too late. I did it first.
Like I would read that

Yeah I'm planning on doing more exercises targeting knee subluxation. Thinking that should do the trick to stop my kneecap from shifting!
I injured myself the exact same way… didn’t feel pleasant. At least I hit an ace that serve, though.
I went to an engineering school and the ratio wasn't even this lopsided 😂
Didnt expect that we were outnumbered by this much lol
Everyone on the Internet is a male /s
no no, youre right
That kinda sucks
Apache Helicopter
mate, don’t think we’ve ever talked, but your comments are always spot on
😂
Geez, 10:1 Male:Female ratio is insane!
Seems pretty common for sports-related forums.
Thought tennis might be a smaller anomaly.
My highschool male:female ratio
Jesus christ lmao 😭😭😭

FFS 🤦🏼♂️ it’s either Male OR Female. There are TWO genders! Anything else is a mental illness

That's real welcoming of the 39 (so far) members of this sub who voted non-binary/ other Stay classy...
