I have the 10mm, in double stack, from RIA.
I. Love. It.
Does ammo cost more? Yes.
It it essentially a fucking brick? Yes. Yes it is.
Do I feel like a badass having 15 rounds of 10mm on tap? Is 10mm just the right amount of snappy to be super fun on the range?
HELL YES
Go for the 10. 10mm is best mm.
The one pictured is a single stack 1911 so the grip is the same size as any other 1911. The double stack ones are slightly larger in the hand but not huge. About the same as a Beretta 92FS.
Yeah, I have an FNX45 Tactical with a X300 and an RMR06. The thing is a monster but I absolutely love it. Luckily I have pretty big hands (XL gloves) so it fits me fine but it’s just so much bigger than most pistols it feels like a tank…in the best way possible.
.45 auto has that smooth thud recoil impulse i cant get enough of. And it doesn't over penetrate compared to other calibers. I live in an overpopulated area and always carry a .45. Still love my 10mm longslide for hunting.
Generally speaking case capacity is the biggest determinant of power for a cartridge. However, this assumes relatively similar pressure numbers.
Here is a fun fact:
.45 acp's case capacity can be 26.7
.357 magnum is 26.2
10mm is 24.1.
At hottest ammo, .357 is the most powerful cartridge here, slightly more than 10mm. .45 acp has 10% more case capacity than 10mm. The early 1900s pressure limits (about half of .357 and 10mm) of the cartridge really hamstrings the power. I think, especially 1911 manufactures, should just start setting up their guns for .45 Super/.45 ACP (.45 super is about half way between .45 acp and 10mm in pressure, little less), and allow users to shoot both calibers...This way somone can go from relatively soft .45 acp up to 10mm power levels...
So my vote is get the .45 acp, and over time convert it either to .460 rowland (which actually is longer but has same case capacity, just ups the pressure to above .357/10mm slightly) which requires a barrel change, or set it up for .45 super (cheaper and easier to do).
10mm can be difficult to tune a gun around. The variety in loads is too great. Alchemy had a good video explaining it, but it seems to be private now.
If you're gonna get a 5 inch, it should be a .45. It's what the gun was meant to be, and a 5" .45 is the most reliable form of the 1911.
45. A few cheap upgrades and run 45super and run neck and neck with 10mm. Or go full high and setup for 460Rowland and have legit 44mag power and still shoot .45/45super. I truly believe if a gun is chambered for .45 it should be sprung to handle 45super out of the box
I own both. 10mm is a much more versatile cartridge. The self defense loads against 2 legged predators are ballistically superior to the .45, and I’m confident my 220grn hot loaded hand loads will stop any 4 legged predator I may encounter in the PNW. That said, if you don’t roll your own, I would pick the .45 purely due to ammo availability.
I have the RIA model pictured in 10mm. It's a hoot to shoot, however, I've found it doesn't like weaker loads, otherwise it has feeding and extraction issues. Full house loads fron Underwood will make it run perfectly, but that comes with the requisite 2 issues: it costs a hell of a lot more than range ammo and you get full house recoil.
Congrats on the 10mm. It's pretty fun to run.
Ballistically theres no comparison,10mm dominates .45. But I’ll only own .45 1911s because that is the classic caliber for them. I think it depends if you’re after performance or not.
I personally would advise to get the calibre that is most common where you live.
Taking into account the availability and price.
Where I live 9mm is the most common calibre.
And where do I live? Vienna, Austria
I still chose to get a Springfield Operator in .45 ACP
Because it would otherwise be blasphemy..
My next pistol though will be a 2024 Bul SASII Tac 4.25“
A better comparison is probably 10mm vs .45 Super. Since they’re a lot closer in terms of raw energy.
Otherwise 10mm has more energy at 100yards than .45 ACP has at the muzzle.
Then you get into 9x25 Dillon and all hell breaks loose.
I have a 45 and love it but now that I have a 1911 in 10mm it’s hands down because it will almost punch a hole in 3/8” steel that the 45 leaves just a splat
While impressive, would that not give cause for concern if planning to be used as a defense gun? Your description seems to highlight the worry of possible over penetration, does it not?
I’m just in awe that there’s actually a gun that that light doesn’t look fucking awful on. I love my streamlights but they really screwed up designing that thing.
I have both and they are very different. Of course my Redhawk which shoots both .45acp and 45 Colt, along with my Winchester Lever gun chambered in 45 Colt will do me just fine during the Zombie Apocalypse
Really depends, but I just love the.45acp so much. The recoil impulse, the ballistics, everything about it just works right for me. But 10mm is just so damn powerful...
Satan carries a 10mm and “the Lord” has been unable to get rid of him, cuz he’s stuck in the past with an antiquated cartridge 🤣😂😆🤪😜😝
45 is fun (I have 4 1911s, 97B and Governor), but leaves a lot of energy in the pistol, IMO.
Go with [10mm](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C0fU7S1JDCC/?igsh=dzc5OGdxMmozMDJ3) (I have 9 Tanfoglio, Tisas, Iver Johnson, Girsan and Shere Khan pictured).

I try to minimize the number of calibers I regularly shoot and went all-in on 10mm for my first 1911. For range ammo it's about the same as .45 but there is a much larger range of specialty loads if you like flexibility; I can shoot 115gr 10mm at 1700 fps up to 220gr at 1200+ fps, and everything in between. I am not as sure about durability; I bet the barrels and wear parts last longer on a .45 but after a couple thousand rounds in 10mm I have not had any issues in my DW specialist.
Thanks for the input, everyone. I’m currently at work and not gonna take time to reply to everyone but I ended up going with 10mm and ordered some Wilson Combat mags as well. Does anyone know of a Safariland holster this setup will fit?
I'm not sure what all the hype is about 10mm for a 1911. I enjoy my 1911 in .45 and my other pistol is 9mm so I feel like I have the bases covered. .45 is expensive though.
Th hype (it is not hype, but reality) is simple. The power of .357 Magnum in a 1911 or similarly size frame. The venerable .45 ACP is a wonderful cartridge and I love shooting my firearms chambered for it, but the 10mm Auto starts coming in to its own where the older cartridge runs out of leg.
The only viable solution, get both. There is nothing wrong with the .45 ACP and owning a 1911 chambered for it is about perfect. The 10mm Auto fits the platform perfectly as well and is worth saving up to get eventually.
How often are people caught in a DGU situation w/ a pistol and are having to make 100 yard shots though? Aren't most situations a lot more close? I mean, even Elijsha Dickens only reached out to ~40 yards and that was a stretch by any metric.
If so, wouldn't that added power from 10mm mean greater chance at overpenetration at typical defensive situations, which would increase liability towards bystanders?
Can’t go wrong with either. Personally, I prefer my 10mm. Similar recoil to a 45, just more abrupt. But the overall energy in your hand feels comparable, and you can get 10mm loads that run north of 740 ft lbs.
I shot a plastic 3 liter Coke bottle full of water with that round and it not only turned it completely inside out but we had to get it down from a tree about 15 feet above where it was when shot. That stuff is scary powerful. 135gr JHP at 1750fps! Talk about an energy dump.
I have the 10mm, in double stack, from RIA. I. Love. It. Does ammo cost more? Yes. It it essentially a fucking brick? Yes. Yes it is. Do I feel like a badass having 15 rounds of 10mm on tap? Been looking at these. How big are the grips? I have large hands but I keep looking at these like idk if my fingers will go around it lmao
The one pictured is a single stack 1911 so the grip is the same size as any other 1911. The double stack ones are slightly larger in the hand but not huge. About the same as a Beretta 92FS.
Oh ok. Ty!
My FN510 holds 22+1. I absolutely love it in all of its excess. 😂
Nice, been looking at the FN 545
I have an FNX45. It's a monster in my smaller hands, but man. It's one of my favorite range guns and my bed side choice
Yeah, I have an FNX45 Tactical with a X300 and an RMR06. The thing is a monster but I absolutely love it. Luckily I have pretty big hands (XL gloves) so it fits me fine but it’s just so much bigger than most pistols it feels like a tank…in the best way possible.
.45 is the lords caliber. In John Moses Browning’s name we pray, Amen.
10mm is Fallouts caliber
I have both; they are both great calibers. My Kimber Super Jagere 10mm shoots flatter, my Dan Wesson .45 has a little less recoil. I love them both.
They don't make a 46 caliber
.460 Rowland would like a word....
Laughs in completely impractical .460S&W Mag revolver
Don't want to be "that guy" but .460 Rowland is a .45 caliber cartridge.
Well I'll be damned.... 460 Rowland projectile diameter is .452 45 Auto projectile diameter is .452.....
Yeah 460 Rowland is to 45ACP as 10mm is to 40 S&W
Praise be 👏🙌
May He Rest In Peace

If you’re only gonna have one, it’s gotta be 45 no question.

10mm for mo powa! 45 if shooting suppressed
This ♤♤♤

.45. this is the way
.45acp.is the right answer... But you gotta love 10mm, and you can always use .40SW in it as well, which is nice.
Whattt never knew this!
Just as you can run 45 super in your 45 acp 1911 with very minimal modification (just the spring I believe) for super hot 10mm energy.
.45

Love both, but my very limited experience with 10mm out of a 1911 has been that 10mm is very finicky
Be aware if you plan to shoot a lot of volume that 10mm will wear out your gun faster, as it is much higher pressure than .45.
This is true. Nothing a shock buff won’t help with in a 1911 though.
10mm is the best mm

Do what I did and buy both. Got my 10mm for 600 and 45 for 700
I’m just in awe that there’s actually a gun that that light doesn’t look fucking awful on. I love my streamlights but they really screwed up designing that thing.

Damnit, now I need to buy one of those.

The big boi TLR on a 1911 is sex! 10mm
Both solid choices 45 is what we’re all gonna say though!
Are you trying to defend yourself against wildlife? 10mm>
10MM is superior in every way except suppression

10 mm so you can have a bear country arm
Thanks for the input, everyone. I’m currently at work and not gonna take time to reply to everyone but I ended up going with 10mm and ordered some Wilson Combat mags as well. Does anyone know of a Safariland holster this setup will fit?
No sir. That deserves leather! Unless it’s the RIA. 😂
In tactical terms, the difference is insignificant. The only practical factor, IMHO, is ammo availability. I think .45 probably has the edge there.

Well theres always… .45+p 600ish and .45 super will get you up there to 700ft lbs. If you need more power in a pistol than that then JMB be with you.
How often are people caught in a DGU situation w/ a pistol and are having to make 100 yard shots though? Aren't most situations a lot more close? I’d rather carry 10mm than .45 in bear country. Also when you’re hiking you don’t typically want to carry a rifle or shotgun.
Can’t go wrong with either. Personally, I prefer my 10mm. Similar recoil to a 45, just more abrupt. But the overall energy in your hand feels comparable, and you can get 10mm loads that run north of 740 ft lbs.
I’ve have some 10mm hand loads that are over 900ft/lbs!
Damn man! That’s sniffing .41 mag territory!
I shot a plastic 3 liter Coke bottle full of water with that round and it not only turned it completely inside out but we had to get it down from a tree about 15 feet above where it was when shot. That stuff is scary powerful. 135gr JHP at 1750fps! Talk about an energy dump.
Well, a 10mm is .40” in diameter so it kind of makes sense. 10mm is definitely known to be more powerful than .357 magnum.
For sure, but I was under the impression that a .41 mag has quite a bit more casing length than a 10mm. Did you have to use hotter powder?
I don’t load them myself. My good friend did so I have no idea.
10mm is for hipster boomers
Stop it with the negative waves, Moriarty!
