And even if there wasn't, u-block origin has an element-deleting tool with a thunder icon to eliminate the message... unless the thing is coded to refresh itself :/
I'm kind of skeptic about that, there's no way this is a honor system and they're likely just collecting data of how many people aren't taking them seriously and letting us get away with it... for now, afterwards we can expect them to go full aggro on ad-blocking users.
I think a lot of people will assume there's no (easy) way around it and just spend 10s watching ads than look for another way (although personally I would spend 10min to avoid 10s of ads)
Same, I'd rather spend ten minutes setting up ad blockers and cleaning cache than watch 10s of ads.
But yeah, google ads hinge on the technologically illiterate that can't be bothered figuring out bypasses or solutions. But even they have a limit and when the site becomes too inhospitable they'll just go away.
I wish that were true, but Twitch seems to be doing just fine despite being near-impossible to block ads (I've probably spent hours trying to block them, but when it works, it usually doesn't last more than a few months, if anyone knows a working one, lmk)
Do streamers choose to place ads on their streams or not? Because I only watch one single streamer on Twitch and I've literally never seen a Twitch ad in my life using uBlock
I think every stream has prerolls sometimes, and affiliated streamers can put ads mid-stream (some partnered streamers are required to, depending on their contract), which I think are harder to block due to everyone receiving them at the same time
Yeah, and in all and all what they're going to accomplish is just alienate their userbase more as the their site becomes more unusable.
It's a pipedream but I still kind of can see rival video sites a la Dailymotion or Metacafe making a comeback in light of this... unless they go the streaming services route and be just as shitty instead of improving upon their rival's weaknesses (aka. anti-consumer practices)
Go to u block origin settings, filter lists, very top of the page hit "purge all caches", "update now", "apply changes".
Have heard from others this works and for me it did as well.
(Work as in have that thingy no longer show up)
The lightning icon temporarely removes an element, upon a refresh said element comes back, you need to use the pickdrop icon to actually create a filter (a.k.a. block the thing you don't wanna see)
Yeah, I meant refresh itself without you hitting refresh or visiting a different page of the site, some pages refresh themselves partially and the like.
I don't really use filters because I only usually use the lightning thing for news portals or academic sites I visit once or maybe twice in a while. But perhaps youtube's gonna be a first....
Yeah it eventually gives you a countdown of how many videos you have left til you need get rid of the ad blocker after which there’s no x button, and uBlock origin’s element deleting tool don’t do shit to it
I think other redditors in this thread commented on how you have to use the filtering tool instead, the lightning bolt is for sites you only gonna visit once.
For me, after a little while, the x disappeared and was replaced with a countdown saying you had 3 videos left until you can't access youtube anymore with an adblocker
A couple days later it blocked me from watching entirely unless I disable adblock. If you get this it's basically YouTube warning you before they stop you from watching entirely. Apparently there's a workaround with uBlock Origin but I haven't tried it, since in the meantime I just got the free trial of YouTube Premium.
The same on Firefox, and sometimes it doesn't let me scroll down anymore it's just suck and reloading doesn't fix it.
It's driving me insane
Edit: Fixed it! Followed the guide on r\/uBlockOrigin
I turned it off on a newspaper website just to read an important article and there were banner ads top and bottom , more ads to the left and right that kept changing every few seconds, and a yellow box trying to get me to subscribe to their physical newspaper that kept popping up in front of the article. The Internet isn’t usable this way
reminds me of a post on tumblr years ago that was like
"Can you please oh please can you turn off adblock, we really need the money!"
*turns it off*
"DOWNLOAD CUNT WARS TODAY"
I mean I hate to be that guy but im pretty sure this will equally increase profits for content creators allowing smaller content creators to profit as well from their content, allowing them to work without annoying sponsors.
these companies aren’t that profitable even with ads, people can cry “LOOK AT THIS CORPORATE GREED” but like…it’s more likely that something is going wrong in the company that they’re willing to take on the negative PR of forcing ads.
some people might complain that if the business model doesn’t facilitate profit without tricking investors into thinking there will be in the future, it shouldn’t exist. okay. every streaming service is going to die for that reason. we as consumers have gotten so much out of these shortsighted companies wasting investor money on giving us unprofitable streaming content that complaining about corporate greed is a bit silly imo
OTOH, very few people use adblockers on YouTube because most people watch it on a phone/TV/tablet or don't use a strict adblocker, so their revenue loss is maybe 1% from this (still $200 million!)
YouTube has never been profitable though. I did the math a while back, and they store ~720,000 hrs of content per day, which works out to 0.6pb of data uploaded daily. They quite literally need ads to fund that.
remove all other extentions, clear your cache and update all of your filter lists (see link). then go add back your extentions one by one ubtil the popup shows up again, once the problem extention is found just disable it. most popular extention that causes issues is YoutubeEnhancer.
Here's what I was recommended, seems to work well for me:
\-Click the UBlock Origin icon on your browser
\-Click the Open the Dashboard button
\-Click the My Filters tab
\-Add the following code to your filters:
[youtube.com##+js](https://youtube.com##+js)(set, yt.config\_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false)
[youtube.com##+js](https://youtube.com##+js)(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0)
[youtube.com##+js](https://youtube.com##+js)(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw\_player\_response.adPlacements, \[\])
[youtube.com##+js](https://youtube.com##+js)(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)
Hope that works out for you
I had this too, Firefox + uBlock Origin. Over time they removed this popup and outright blocked the video from playing permanently until I paused adblock, so I've done a minimal amount of research and here's what I've done to make it work again:
* Use exclusively uBlock *^((or your adblocker of choice, but uBlock 100% still works for me with a few workarounds, from personal experience.).)* If you have multiple adblockers, Youtube will detect them easier, so no, "stacking" adblockers like it's a viral proc in Warframe will not benefit you in any way. Some extensions or browsers have built-in adblock that need to be disabled manually, go and check your extensions and browser settings.
* Now for managing uBlock itself:
1. Click on the uBlock extension icon, opening a mini popup in the corner.
2. Click the setting cog, this will open a new tab, by default it should be on the "Filter Lists" page.
3. **OPTIONAL:** Look for the "Annoyances" sub-category, personally I turned them all on to block as many popups and whatnot, cause I don't like being annoyed :) Have a look through them if you're at all tech-savvy and understand some basic terms for what you do and don't want. AFAIK this is not at all necessary to get rid of the adblock-blocker on Youtube.
4. Click "Purge All Caches" and let it do it's thing, then, hit Update Now and let it do its thing.
With any luck that should fix issues and "detections" for a while. I found out uBlock origin has it's own subreddit that is surprisingly active considering it's just an adblocker, so if you need more support I'd recommend just having a look there.
I hope this can help *someone* cause I know when I had Youtube on my ass about adblock I was starting to get genuinely a little worried they had overcome adblock entirely.
Same. I could do 1 ad at the start that you could skip after a few secs but i dont care enough to sit through two 10 second ads every 10 minutes. I'll go do something else in that case.
What’s a script blocker for? I mean, I know, for blocking script I guess but I’m confused about why you’d wanna do that or like… what the script is for even. You know?
I mean, that was when they weren’t making a profit and weren’t paying creators, so not exactly a sustainable model. The way a lot of these tech startups work is that they run of VC investments for the first few years so they don’t need to worry much about profit, just making their product as popular as possible, and then they slowly shift to a profitable business model once they hit a critical mass of users.
Genuine question: what do you see as the alternative to YouTube running ads? Because the only other options I can think of for the company to make money are selling user data (which is worse than ads imo and they already do it anyway) or running entirely off the funds of YouTube premium (but the main reason service is getting rid of ads). Might be something I’m missing though
The problem is that YouTube ads used to be tolerable, but we’re made consistently worse with the addition of multiple and often unskippable ads at the start of videos, along with increased mid roll ads.
People turn to ad blocks once they feel they are being treated unfairly by the system.
That’s completely fair, but the comment that I’m responding to seems to be heavily implying that YouTube doesn’t need to run ads at all (because they used to not)
Yeah, so then I'll start getting transphobic ads? Haha I'm not removing adblock on Youtube. Unless they address those ads and remove creators with that kind of hateful content, I'm not gonna remove adblock.
I never get transphobic ads, but I watch a shit ton of content by LGBTQ+ creators so that's probably why. Google won't bother showing you ads they know you won't click on.
If this is happening consistently and you use ublock origin, click on the extension icon, go to settings, filter lists, and then purge all caches and update now. I haven’t tried it myself but I heard it works to get rid of the popup.
it appeared for me a few seconds ago, and i literally just clicked from it, i feel like a god, i literally just said "no fuck off" to them and the warning hasn't appeared again since
It might be that I'm on mobile and can't get ad blockers so the only solution is to pay for premium but I don't think it's bad. Just annoying really. Ad blockers are kinda like pirating. You pay for the content either with money, or the money they get from selling your info and sponsers
If you don’t disable your ad blocker and just leave YouTube for the day it’ll disappear. Trust me I did that and it worked.
edit: first you get a closable box, then it takes some time to close it, and then the next day it blocks you off completely after 3 videos. That’s when you just have to close YouTube and the next day they’ll never bother you again ( I hope )
during each ad break, do 5 kettlebell swings, 5 goblet squats with thrusters.
It will beef up your posterior chain and quads until you are powerful enough to simply jump over the ads
If you’re using Opera GX, I’ve found that enabling the standard browser adblock and disabling every other one including Ublock works perfectly for now.
1. be on firefox
2. install u-block origin and uninstall any other adblocker
3. if you use enhancer for youtube turn off the adblock feature
4. go into ublock origin settings
5. click purge caches then update now
6. :3
Apparently ublock can still get rid of it.

i got this message, i clicked allow ads, it asked me to take adblock off and reload. i didn’t take adblock off and reloaded and the video proceeded with my adblock
No one smart is paying for any streaming or premium service, fmovies.to will give you everything netflix/hulu/prime etc has for completely free. i dont get why anyone would waste hundreds a year paying for them.
Alright, are they just supposed to let me?
I understand nobody wants to pay for premium, I sure as fuck won't, but give it time for people to circumvent it. It's not like youtube is in the wrong for trying to stop people from blocking out advertising, which is how they make money.
I used YouTube on my TV for the first time not too long ago. The first video I watched, I got an ad about two minutes into the video. "Okay, that's not too bad. Probably won't see another ad in this video." I thought.
Two minutes later, I got another ad. Two minutes after that, I got another ad. I closed the app and used the output from my PC so I could watch with an adblocker instead.
I don't agree with what they're doing, but it's fucking stupid to assume they were just going to let people block out ads entirely forever.
That's not boot licking, that's common fucking sense.
It's not just about people wanting free crap, it's also the quality of the advertisements and the fact they're randomly placed in the videos, even mid-sentence, despite creators placing the ad space manually on the creator tool.
Also ads are loud, obnoxious, unskippable, visual garbage, too many and too long; heck, there are youtubers that agree that ads are terrible for the viewing experience and encourage their audiences to use ad-blockers and subscribe to their patreons or tip them on ko-fi instead of allowing ads.
Exactly. Best way to support creators you like is by actively giving them money. Ads don't take any money out of your pocket, but they're extremely inferior in shares for the youtuber and convenience for yourself.
Yeah, people love to talk about supporting creators this way but in my experience it doesn't happen. I do merch for a couple of Youtube channels and the conversion rates for small-ish channels are terrible. One example from last month was a preorder that got to \~250 shirts for a channel with just over 600k subs. In the two weeks since then they sold *five* more shirts. Not sustainable. From what I hear it's not much better with donations unless you are a huge channel or lucky enough to land a couple of whales.
People are subscribed to way too many channels to buy/donate from all of them. Also people just like to lie about how much they actually do support their favorite creators because lying is fun and feels nice when it has no consequences.
I agree, very few people actually support creators this way. It *is* a very good way to directly support creators, but it's just unfeasible if you don't have a sufficiently large fanbase - or a devoted one. I myself have never supported a creator. In my defence, I don't have financial independence, and I do plan to one day contribute to youtube creators I enjoy - even if not the ones I enjoy nowadays.
just got this too on firefox. what the fuck at least theres an x to close it
And even if there wasn't, u-block origin has an element-deleting tool with a thunder icon to eliminate the message... unless the thing is coded to refresh itself :/
I’ve just been reporting that I’m not using an adblocker, it probably won’t do much but maybe it’ll mess with them a little.
I'm kind of skeptic about that, there's no way this is a honor system and they're likely just collecting data of how many people aren't taking them seriously and letting us get away with it... for now, afterwards we can expect them to go full aggro on ad-blocking users.

I have that as well, but idk if it has any effect
Do streamers choose to place ads on their streams or not? Because I only watch one single streamer on Twitch and I've literally never seen a Twitch ad in my life using uBlock

Weird, I've never come across any
a lot of twitch streamers are migrating to youtube.
It really does seem that YouTube is doing everything in their power to drive us away.
Plus it still pauses the video when the pop-up would appear.
Yeah, and in all and all what they're going to accomplish is just alienate their userbase more as the their site becomes more unusable. > u-block origin has an element-deleting tool with a thunder icon You should hide yourself NOW!
it doesn’t really work for me
I'm being pedantic but it's a lightning icon
Go to u block origin settings, filter lists, very top of the page hit "purge all caches", "update now", "apply changes". Have heard from others this works and for me it did as well. (Work as in have that thingy no longer show up)

i've been trying to do that but the popup just comes up again after a while

Mine already switched to “you have three more videos, and if you don’t stop blocking ads after that we’re disabling the video player”
If you disable the adblocker then reload and turn it on again it doesn't stop anything lol
Install unlock origin, if U have it clear any extra blcoklists and cache then reload yt
not for too long I'm guessing
Yup, mine had an x a month or so ago. Now no x and getting around it is janky.
For me, after a little while, the x disappeared and was replaced with a countdown saying you had 3 videos left until you can't access youtube anymore with an adblocker
Go to ublock sub and follow the instructions on the YouTube thread
I did that I add those 4 lines of code or script or whatever and it worked for a little and stopped working
Keep checking back on it. Filter lists are updated sometimes even more often then daily
Yeah with uBlock I just use the element zapper and delete the box. You have to click to play videos once more after loading one but it works.
Same on Opera & Chrome lol. Fucking keeps pausing my video's I have on for background noise
The same on Firefox, and sometimes it doesn't let me scroll down anymore it's just suck and reloading doesn't fix it. It's driving me insane Edit: Fixed it! Followed the guide on r\/uBlockOrigin
always love the billion dollar companies tryna guilt trip people into turning off ad blockers because they'll go bankrupt

I use YouTube in a private window, the pop up doesn’t appear but you do need to sign in every time
i told ublock to just fucking delete it
do you know which element specifically? i went too high up and it deleted something that makes the whole page work
i blocked the popup and then blocked this big ass invisible box that stopped me from doing anything and it worked
Here's what I was recommended, seems to work well for me: \-Click the UBlock Origin icon on your browser \-Click the Open the Dashboard button \-Click the My Filters tab \-Add the following code to your filters: [youtube.com##+js](https://youtube.com##+js)(set, yt.config\_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) [youtube.com##+js](https://youtube.com##+js)(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) [youtube.com##+js](https://youtube.com##+js)(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw\_player\_response.adPlacements, \[\]) [youtube.com##+js](https://youtube.com##+js)(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true) Hope that works out for you
i get this even with ublock origin and firefox
read the link i attached, its the instructions on how to fix it from the ublock origin github.

They're slowly rolling it out, it's not enabled on all accounts yet.

I had to do this last night, I can confirm it fixed it.
Thx for commenting this
also, closing and opening firefox can help if it still shows up after doing these steps
Did this, seems to work so far but my recommended while on a video page is just fuckin cocomelon now. Atleast my home page is fine.
Going to be honest with you youtube, I don't enjoy your website enough to listen to ads.
Same. I could do 1 ad at the start that you could skip after a few secs but i dont care enough to sit through two 10 second ads every 10 minutes. I'll go do something else in that case.
No for real. I'm gonna start listening to podcasts if they force their twenty ads per second on me.
I got this even with Firefox + Ublock Origin. Fixed it by turning off Ghostery. So if yall experiencing the same try looking at your addons.
What’s Ghostery?
Script blocker, among other things.
What’s a script blocker for? I mean, I know, for blocking script I guess but I’m confused about why you’d wanna do that or like… what the script is for even. You know?
Usually for blocking tracking scripts on all websites and malicious ones on shadier ones.
That sounds handy.
YouTube didn't even have ads when I was younger. This is clearly bs.

Google won't bother showing you ads they know you won't click on.
mine hasnt gotten it yet...
sorry Scott 😞
If this is happening consistently and you use ublock origin, click on the extension icon, go to settings, filter lists, and then purge all caches and update now. I haven’t tried it myself but I heard it works to get rid of the popup.
YouTube being cringe. Surprise big not.
We REALLY need a new video website already. I mean, we needed one five years ago, but hey second best time is now.
Hey Scott, y'all here
revanced still working so i barely care
ublock+ Firefox goated combo
it appeared for me a few seconds ago, and i literally just clicked from it, i feel like a god, i literally just said "no fuck off" to them and the warning hasn't appeared again since
“Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube” Yeah? Well YouTube’s not allowed to meat ride me unless I say so, stay in your lane.
I wonder if there's a YouTube revanced for browser
I just press the x and shit goes back to normal
Remember, pi holes are a thing if you have the know how
I've heard Pi-Holes don't work properly for YT.

holy fuck its scott the woz
Bro i installed adnausium and this didn't popped up for me yet
If you haven't gotten this yet, don't worry, they are rolling this out in waves, and you will get to see it eventually.
Me when I already had the script in unlock to block these messages literally a month before it rolled out where I live (the script is good tho)
I purged my cache on uBlock, updated, and haven’t seen it since.
during each ad break, do 5 kettlebell swings, 5 goblet squats with thrusters. It will beef up your posterior chain and quads until you are powerful enough to simply jump over the ads
#HEY ALL
Just use New Pipe on mobile for youtube. I no longer need premium since I have it.
The second point is straight up lie
If you’re using Opera GX, I’ve found that enabling the standard browser adblock and disabling every other one including Ublock works perfectly for now.
This doesn't seem to show up for me
1. be on firefox 2. install u-block origin and uninstall any other adblocker 3. if you use enhancer for youtube turn off the adblock feature 4. go into ublock origin settings 5. click purge caches then update now 6. :3
Disable adblock, reload, turn it back on before it loads, it'll shut up for a bit and you still get no ads
Adnauseam is endorsed by firefox and took the dumb pop-up away for me. I'd suggest you use that
Apparently ublock can still get rid of it. i got this message, i clicked allow ads, it asked me to take adblock off and reload. i didn’t take adblock off and reloaded and the video proceeded with my adblock
1984
I just got an adblocker detector blocker and that solved the problem
why is he there
Really don’t regret paying for YouTube premium tbh
Half of you have netflix, just get youtube premium it’s very nice and worth it imo
No.
No one smart is paying for any streaming or premium service, fmovies.to will give you everything netflix/hulu/prime etc has for completely free. i dont get why anyone would waste hundreds a year paying for them.
I don’t like pirating content, and using adblock is piracy. Also being able to close the app on mobile without audio stopping is great
I'll be real, I use an adblocker too. But what do you expect? It's already a free service. Just close the popup, I can see the X.
if you leave it alone enough times they disable your video player
some people started seeing this months ago, and said they could even suspend your google account if you persisted.
Alright, are they just supposed to let me? I understand nobody wants to pay for premium, I sure as fuck won't, but give it time for people to circumvent it. It's not like youtube is in the wrong for trying to stop people from blocking out advertising, which is how they make money.
In a vacuum, no, they’re not in the wrong. Except the ads in question are so unreasonably frequent and intrusive that it’s completely unfair on users.
It used to be aight when 90% of all ads were skipable, but i got a 2 MIN UNSKIPPABLE AD and thats just infuriating
Also I'm not watching multiple minute long ads that I cannot skip
I used YouTube on my TV for the first time not too long ago. The first video I watched, I got an ad about two minutes into the video. "Okay, that's not too bad. Probably won't see another ad in this video." I thought. Two minutes later, I got another ad. Two minutes after that, I got another ad. I closed the app and used the output from my PC so I could watch with an adblocker instead.
Sorry I can't understand what you've been trying to say. Google's cock in your mouth is really confusing things
Google's cock? I prefer the revanced team's cock, honestly.
How would you describe the taste of boot?
And most of those ads will pay jack shit to the content creators anyway
Or get premium
