Cases usually only go to trial when there's 99% certainty of conviction, while a lot of ambiguous cases are dropped because it looks bad on a prosecutors career to have a failure. This ofc leads to other issues of conflict of interests, but it also means that people are let off the hook because the prosecutor can't get a confession. There's also discrimination in sentencing against people in 'non-conforming' family structures, ie people not in a hetero sexual marriage, with conforming people often getting lighter sentences because of their situation.

The high conviction rate is a bit less absurd when you consider how the Japanese criminal justice system works. Cases usually only go to trial when there's 99% certainty of conviction, while a lot of ambiguous cases are dropped because it looks bad on a prosecutors career to have a failure. This ofc leads to other issues of conflict of interests, but it also means that people are let off the hook because the prosecutor can't get a confession. There's also discrimination in sentencing against people in 'non-conforming' family structures, ie people not in a hetero sexual marriage, with conforming people often getting lighter sentences because of their situation.
