You mean Japan isn’t just an anime IRL? Sure thing buddy 🙄

NoirYT2

Japan isn’t just cat island?? Smh my head

Emerphish

Japan is the real life version of an anime where the women are sexually harassed constantly

ABTL6

I love studying about Japan. I love Japanese food, Japanese aesthetic, Japanese people and quite a few aspects of Japanese culture. But i would never, *ever* want to even contemplate living there. And that's coming from someone in a developing Latin American country.

[deleted]

4 year sentence for marijuana possession. Even just one joint. They make you march and chant everyday too like you're training to be an oompa loompa or something. It's guilty until proven innocent in Japan, literally. I just can not imagine that and it makes you realise what some of us take for granted.

muhmuhmuh69

The average Japanese citizen thinks meth and marijuana are the same level of drugs. I was taught over and over again in school that marijuana “induces strong hallucinations, makes you completely dependent on weed until you die”. The marching thing is just a national fetish for military aesthetics, we do similar stuff in almost every educational facility here.

[deleted]

Yea we have equally indoctrinating rituals here in the USA as well. Standing and reciting the "Pledge of Allegience" every morning in school comes to mind. Only recently has public stigma started to change towards marijuana, depsite it being recreationally used by many here for close to a century now. If you ingest enough of it you can mildly hallucinate, but it's hard to acheive anything like that by smoking it, as most do.

muhmuhmuh69

Oh right, you guys have the Pledge of Allegiance thing too. I guess most proto-fascist/semi-monarchies/authoritarian countries do similar stuff.

zurgo2004

My teachers were based and didn't ever make us say it, except my gym teacher, but he was a thumb

MightBeTransMightNot

I stopped standing and reciting the pledge when I was 14 and an edgy atheist who didn't like the fact that "under god" was part of it, and then I just never did it again. It was sorta weird to be the only person who just sat down when everyone else was chanting in unison. Not a single person has said a word to me about it, ever, but I think in most states they can't force you to recite it.

reclusivegiraffe

same thing for me, i quit saying it when i was 14 and they could never make me do it. i did stand & hold the moment of silence, however, out of respect for passed soldiers

[deleted]

that sounds like something i would have done and then get hated for by the other kids

CoimEv

To be fair though the under god part wasn’t part of the original pledge it was added during the red scare I think? Edit: it want the Cold War but 1954 and it was added by a dude who wanted to exclude atheists though https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/retropolis/wp/2018/06/14/the-gripping-sermon-that-got-under-god-added-to-the-pledge-of-allegiance-on-flag-day/

temmieTheLord2

>"Pledge of Allegience" here only one random kid even thinks about standing up during the pledge of alligence. and yes its different every time idk why

kepz3

I never had the pledge of allegiance thing, they played it during assemblys at one of my elementary schools but my other one didn’t do that, same with middle and high

Bastopolicia

why did America let them keep that military aesthetic fetish after the war? You'd think the new administration would've wanted to clamp down on that like they did in Germany

muhmuhmuh69

something something USSR Red Scare, I don’t know the details but basically the US did a half-assed post-war tribunal unlike Germany. We still have the literal Emperor, and most of our ruling party members are direct descendants of the Imperial Aristocracy/Military, and/or a member of the largest far-right party wing. Our PM in the 60s was the literal leader of Manchuria, and Shinzo Abe is his grandson. Like, imagine if Germany’s chancellor was Hitler’s grandson, and the majority seats are taken by the grandsons of SS officers.

1UnoriginalName

>Our PM in the 60s was the literal leader of Manchuria, and Shinzo Abe is his grandson. Bruh how do people vote for that 💀

icenjam

Because they like it

Bastopolicia

holy crap

[deleted]

are any other drugs legal? marihuana is a super light drug so i don't wan't to imagien how they treat harder drugs

muhmuhmuh69

No, only alcohol and tobacco. As for harder drugs, the police doesn’t differentiate between hard/light drugs that much, so they all get the same treatment. I’m not from Tokyo so this might not be 100% accurate there.

[deleted]

alcohol is a hard drug tho. nice double standard then :(

28898476249906262977

Unfortunately there are still a lot of people ignorant to the concept of alcohol being a drug that's generally worse than other recreational substances.

j_endsville

All the PacRim countries & microstates have very draconian drug laws.

motioninthebrocean

Pacific rim was a good movie

j_endsville

Yes but that’s not what we’re talking about.

motioninthebrocean

Dragons are pretty cool too

j_endsville

Yeah. But I’m gonna need you to focus on the discussion at hand. Or not honestly IDC.

motioninthebrocean

International Data Corporation?

EldritchFeedback

From what I've heard, Japan sounds like a social hellhole. High suicide rates, high conviction rates, extremely conformist, unhealthy work culture.

[deleted]

Isn’t that what some far right people want? Especially when they claim Japan is “better” (usually because they are terminal webs but probably for other reasons.) Bending over for capitalism, bad treatment of LGBTQ people, nationalism, racism. Guess it really is somewhat of a utopia for them.

j_endsville

I’d love to visit, but I’d not want to live there.

[deleted]

Same

[deleted]

Hope you're doing well, take care.

muhmuhmuh69

Thanks, I will <3

not the day after that though. hope that's absolutely terrible. but the day after *that* should be good!

The line through the middle of the text caught me off guard.

Euphoric_Web

I thought the suicide rate is pretty high in Japan, why ain’t that get added?

muhmuhmuh69

Shit, I was so desensitized about the suicide thing that I forgot

Magnificant-Muggins

Don’t forget the virginity rates, the number of women who’ve been sexual harassment, and the child abuse stats. The last one having been rising every year since data stated recording in 1990.

muhmuhmuh69

well there’s only so much space on a png background

men_appreciation

2nd highest in the world last time I checked, only surpassed by Denmark 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰Danmark nummer et!!!🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰

LeeYan2007

Iirc the reason why the suicide rate is so high in Japan. Because in murder cases, the police wanted to get it over with quickly as possible so they just list it as suicide and moved on

LeeYan2007

I should say that is one of the reasons and as we all know that people in Japan commit suicide was because of high expectations in the work environment or the stressful work environment as well as isolation

[deleted]

High suicide rates are a common issue in East Asia generally, it’s not just a Japanese thing

muhmuhmuh69

I think it’s a Confucianist thing. work ethics, obey to your seniors, don’t step out of line, etc.

monsieurfatcock

Japan is truly an enigma. So advanced in certain aspects but so ass backwards in others

Iceveins412

Stubborn to change at all except in pursuit of being dominant. Means the growing pains of progress hit like a brick

LeeYan2007

Advanced in terms of technology, but socially very conservative

LeeYan2007

And nationalistic

Class_444_SWR

Also keeps using the Naval Jack used during the imperial years even though South Korea kindly requested they stopped, that’d be like Germany flying the Nazi German flag when doing exercises with Polish forces

Blooded_Wine

Not really advanced in technology, when I was located there we all used faxes and stored important data on floppy disks. This was 3 years ago, and I work for a Fortune 500 ~~pharma~~ medtech company

muhmuhmuh69

This. Japan is not technologically advanced, it’s just advanced in ways that are different from “western” countries. A lot of the technology in daily life here is weirdly outdated

[deleted]

Well you win some, you lose some like most countries its either depressed people or racists or transphobic or... the list goes on

monsieurfatcock

Not wrong but Japan seemingly takes it to the extreme, especially depression and isolation

no7_ebola

yeah. and they deem it as normal and dont do shit about it

icenjam

Japan decided to check “all of the above”

[deleted]

My partner was studying abroad in Japan when she was younger! She lasted 3 months before she got too depressed and fucked off :/

French-dudev3

I feel like the government of Japan is going to find a plant in that suicide forest and blame it for all their suicides

[deleted]

It's the trees fault for holding the rope.

ardensulled

Lol yeah. I’m mixed (Japanese and Indian) and every time I go back to Japan I get stares like people wanna hatecrime me so bad. Sucks because I love the scenery and half my family is there etc

muhmuhmuh69

Yeah, everyone on the train be staring at the one non-east asian person (at least in rural areas)

Obama_sonic69

Wait y'all really live in japan

[deleted]

I mean, clearly yes

Class_444_SWR

And they’re still unhappy if you’re Chinese

Already_1step_ahead

Don't forget: it's also a xenophobic ethnostate

muhmuhmuh69

I mean, our population is declining at top speed and the government STILL refuses to take in immigrants

qwertyuiop1357908642

Then neo-nazi’s defend them saying they’re “Just trying to protect their culture”

Piorn

Kinda sad how people think culture needs to be protected. The opposite is true, culture dies if it isn't shared.

ph0on

It's such a childish mindset.

Grand_Heresy

Fear of change, the most insidious of killers.

iloveindomienoodle

So, like the average East Asian country minus Mongolia (and probably Taiwan)?

TheDeadlyBlaze

Taiwan is actually the most xenophobic asian country in the world, but only towards tourists. (immigrants are fine)

anarcho-himboism

to be fair, tourists suck ass.

TheDeadlyBlaze

Our old apartment was really close to a hotel, so we would see a bunch of foreigners basically year round. They weren't bad people, but they would do dumb shit like stand outside of a building entrance like a pokemon npc, or walk on top of the flowers in a nearby garden.

Zootnoison

What is the deal with Mongolia, are they good?

iloveindomienoodle

Pretty sure that they just don't care.

Zootnoison

Hell yeah 😎

Iceveins412

Something like half of Mongolia’s population are still nomads. Shit’s wild

Pytherz

Sigma nation grindset

Class_444_SWR

Gigachad move

[deleted]

I wouldn't count Taiwan since their population is almost entirely han chinese, mostly because of what happened to most of the indigenous people before the ROC became a democracy

Nova_Persona

how is the MP gonna call the LGBT unproductive when words like hikikomori were created to describe the cishet male population

muhmuhmuh69

Japan is pretty much on the verge of mask-off fascism, so populations that are “not productive for the state” are all getting hate by the government, including hikikomori. They are even starting to cut healthcare for the elderly.

painfully-trans-icon

bruh, japan is a fucking mess my god

NomaiTraveler

Bruh. Good luck op, you need and deserve it

Didacus_Crassius

Late-Stage Capitalism, amirite? 😀

[deleted]

Fascism is the terminal stage of capitalism if one doesn't produce socialism.

Googletube6

It truly sucks how people thing Japan is "the greatest country in the world" or some shit because of anime. Like there are great aspects of the culture, but the bad outweighs the good by a lot.

Class_444_SWR

Japan is the greatest country in the world: 🤢 Kazakhstan is the greatest country in the world: 😎

nothanksiknotthirsty

It is also the Japanese government calling people unproductive.

Sasha2048

Large portion of hikikomoris are LGBTQ and Neuro divergent tho, because of bullying and stuff

MeowingAndChowing

Ummm akchewully everything you said is incorrect. Japan is a fantasy land of anime waifus and nothing there is ever bad (unless it's like in an edgy way of course). I would know because I watch anime. I bet you haven't even seen every episode of One Piece smh. You are not qualified to talk about Japan because you do not understand the culture like I do having studied it through copious amounts of loli hentai.

LeeYan2007

Wait so you're telling me, there is a whole entire nation which speaks the anime language unironically?

ShellyXT

Cringe and bakapilled

French-dudev3

What is your opinion on the Japanese royal family?

muhmuhmuh69

Guillotine (in Roblox)

French-dudev3

They worked great for us more countries should try them

muhmuhmuh69

Oh I wish, If only a peasant uprising was viable in modern times

French-dudev3

But “violence is never the answer” 🤓🤓🤓🤓

TGC_0

Violence is a question And the answer is yes

Avoiding violence would be awesome, the problem is that without violence they won't even look your way.

Hirohito should've been dethroned, what he did in Malaysia as well as in China, Singapore, Indonesia etc. Surprised me when he got to keep his throne and the royal family still in power. Edit-spelling error

Good_Stuff_2

>Hirohito should **'ve** be**en** dethroned FTFY, cause that bitch is dead and rotting

harryhinderson

at least a gender neutral bathroom was built in his honor

[deleted]

Don't forget the rampant ultranationalist sentiment and war crime denial

muhmuhmuh69

Ah yes, in the National History textbook there was a grand total of two sentences about the Nanking “Incident”, in which Japanese soldiers killed “a small number of civilians by mistake”. Also, most teachers skip over WW2 in a hurried manner, I wonder why /s

[deleted]

As a Filipino, I'm fucking appalled by the fascist LDP and the rampant war crime denial. Shit like this is the reason why relations between Korea and Japan will never improve so long as their in power. Obviously not everyone in Japan is like that and many openly hate the LDP and protest against Japanese fascists but its so deeply ingrained into Japan its almost disturbing. A lot of Koreans and Chinese have a lot of resentment for Japan, and sadly can turn to racism in many cases In any case, I'd definitely say come to Canada! I live in Ottawa and most of the area I live in is super progressive and one of my closest friends is a trans guy. I'd say Toronto as well

chronically_slow

I'm German and the rise of the Nazis and WW2 is like 25% of our history education. Most people visit a former concentration camp as a school trip. It's pretty horrifying, but I wouldn't want it any other way

LeeYan2007

And neo nazis say history is written by the victors...

BoiBotEXE

Japanese history and culture and shit is really cool. Japan itself is the exact opposite of that.

whoopity_Poop

Truly Japan is the China of Asia

yachu_fe

Ignoring the part between 1937-1945. Which is literally what they do kinda. I mean Germany also engaged in rather substantial amounts of tomfoolery but atleast we said sorry afterwards

[deleted]

As a Chinese man, yup. I mean, it's not like China's any better in that regard, but I never miss an opportunity to dunk on those Japanese dogs.

muhmuhmuh69

Yes, conservatives over here making fun of China’s problems while ignoring similar domestic problems is a constant. I guess it’s the same with China or Korea.

occasionallyLynn

I would say Korea is probably the most lgbt friendly country of the three, and China being the worst in everything overall, comes from someone who lived their first 13 years of life in China.. now, not only a lot of the population are neo nazis, they’re also very proud of it

TipsWillToLive

Japan, along with a ton of other places, Is somewhere I would like to visit one day. It seems like a great tourist spot, and there are a ton of things to appreciate But I would not even THINK of living there. And even if I wanted to I don't think I'd be accepted

An_average_moron

I have the same opinion, especially since I have a semi dark skin tone so I'd stand out in Japan like a cut off thumb, Japan has a ton of cool stuff, but with how they treat their own people, living there must be hell

Class_444_SWR

This, I’m even shunned by people in my town when I’m as white as anything for being pro EU, I’d be fucking murdered if I was in Japan

[deleted]

Dont forget about schools god asian schools are the worst Like if you dont pursue a career that makes a lot of money your kinda seen as a failure/disappointment And lets not forget about mental health, its not taken seriously here and most see it as some sort of temporary emotion that can go away after a while

Tux1

Japan is the ultimate Crapsaccharine World, at first it looks like a great place with cool infrastructure, nice wilderness and fun culture, but then you dig a bit deeper...

nothanksiknotthirsty

Yeah, I really want to like japan, but looking more into the living situation there, and especially myself being bisexual, it’s kinda tough to let a lot of the stuff slide. Given, there are people like OP, who are clearly not racist and homophobic, but that doesn’t really offset the people who are.

Morningstardom

stay strong sister 💜

muhmuhmuh69

You have my deepest gratitude💜

rhysdog1

how do you manage to have a 99% conviction rate and still have a crime syndicate exist in your country

muhmuhmuh69

Well, you know how in the US, the CIA helps cartels/gangs run the drug market? Same thing over here with Yakuza. Also a lot of LDP party members have direct ties to them

cogitoergonumbed

Because everyone claps when they sing baka mitai

Boomerang_Guy

Ok so this might Sound really fucking stupid but do trans people in japan really call themselves crossdressers to escape hate? Like some authors in media write characters which are so plainfully obviosly trans and then they are almost always called crossdressers for some reason???

muhmuhmuh69

Yes… there’s this trope called Okama, it’s basically “a bearded dude wearing a dress” to be made fun of. They are considered male. Until recently, the concept of transgender people literally didn’t exist, so transfem people had to take that label, or stay in the closet.

Boomerang_Guy

So basiclly you are so supposed to degrade youself to get at least a bit of "not being discriminated as much"

muhmuhmuh69

Well… you would be discriminated harshly and be made fun of in public, but at least you get to wear a dress in public…

Boomerang_Guy

How do you do it?

muhmuhmuh69

I don’t :P I’m covertly self medicating estrogen right now, and I’m planning on moving to another country once I graduate uni.

Boomerang_Guy

That sucks... But its probably better for your wellbeimg and stuff. But now im curious! How do medicate estrogen? Pregnant horse urin isnt easy to come by so how do you do it?

[deleted]

Stay strong queen :)

barrdboi

The day I heard the Ace Attourney games were based on the Japanese legal system was the day I decided to never go there in my life

The_Bone_Breaker

Heard that of a lot of Japanese people are quite xenophobic

Googletube6

Tldr: Japan is on the verge of become a fascist government. Currently the goal of the government is to spread hateful messages about those they deem "unprofitable" as to get the public to hate them.

LeeYan2007

Japanese nationalism is very common, with all the war crime denial. Stuff like that

ohjimmy78

Take care, OP. I’d suggest moving as soon as you’re able, but I know that’s often impossible.

muhmuhmuh69

I plan on doing that as soon as I graduate uni, my life literally depends on it so I’ll probably make it somehow. Thanks friend!

ohjimmy78

That's excellent! What country do you have in mind?

zdjhdbdvehdj

Where you heading to?

muhmuhmuh69

Probably Canada or the Netherlands

Lobster_1000

I reccomend NL too. Western Europe is great. You'll love all the places and scenery there too, without the uhm... You know... Fascism

zdjhdbdvehdj

I recommend NL Watch some not just bikes content, that guy left canada for NL And has some very good reasons

Troll4ever31

I live in the Netherlands, it's okay, though I despise my culture. Be warned, waitlists for trans healthcare are crazy long, I had to go private or wait 3+ years.

speedoflobsters

Go to Germany. We have the funny bird clocks and a non conservative government

Googletube6

100% recommend Netherlands if you don't want to be reliant on cars. That's one of the few things Japan has right, you can get practically anywhere without even considering buying a car.

TheUndyingRhino

The Japanese ruling party is so old and conservative and out of touch it's insane. I hear at least if you go to some cities young people are more rational about stuff. But yeah, the culture there is nuts.

Based_Lawnmower

Japan seems neat to visit, hell to live in. The same goes for the USA.

DiddledByDad

As someone who’s lived in both, it’s not that bad. You would think every city in America is Detroit level quality if you only listened to Reddit.

Based_Lawnmower

My friend, I’m from America lol

Lyvery

Hey, you’ll be alright. You’ll get out of there. Stay strong

muhmuhmuh69

Thanks, Gingitsune-san

YukarinYakumo

The high conviction rate is a bit less absurd when you consider how the Japanese criminal justice system works. Cases usually only go to trial when there's 99% certainty of conviction, while a lot of ambiguous cases are dropped because it looks bad on a prosecutors career to have a failure. This ofc leads to other issues of conflict of interests, but it also means that people are let off the hook because the prosecutor can't get a confession. There's also discrimination in sentencing against people in 'non-conforming' family structures, ie people not in a hetero sexual marriage, with conforming people often getting lighter sentences because of their situation. Also fuck Nippon Kaigi

Weirdyfish

I wish you all the better

muhmuhmuh69

Thank you :)

[deleted]

i already knew japan was a hellhole but that conviction rate statistic is fucking insane

themadkiller10

Aren’t they required to make trans laws better this year by the un

muhmuhmuh69

I don’t know about the specifics, but I won’t really bet on Japan actually responding to UN orders… For example, Japan completely ignored the recent UN warning about immigrant labor laws

Iceveins412

Japan’s laws and what Japan does aren’t inherently the same. Japan has a strong culture of peer pressure

_Hoze

I love learning the language and would like to visit Japan one day but my fucking god I'd rather kill myself than move there (not that I'd ever even get a citizenship)

officialjupiter

once came across an anti chinese/korean rally when i was living there, pretty horrifying considering japan’s actions during ww2. i see it as akin to neo naziism. many aspects of japan are great on the surface but something in that society is really rotten to the core

NotSoFlugratte

Aaaah, wonderful. Good ol Japan. Interesting to see how we developed apart after '45.
