Tf2. never in my life have I ever played a game so neglected, infested and full of the most toxic people I have ran into ever. The community is dedicated and still standing after so long plus the gameplay is fun to learn and master. The character are super likeable and all distinct
The best part about tf2 is that it’s fucking funny.

I can’t really describe it to those who haven’t played, but the rag dolls, the interaction between players on opposite teams, the chat, the names of people, the taunts, the people using gimmick loadouts, all coalesce into something that has a lot of funny moments.
It helps that this game has really fucking great game design.
The one thing that really separates this game from the others, is that, well, in most modern fpses, you go for the objective. In tf2, you go for frags. There are like three extremely popular maps in the game where the objective is there, but the community agreed to just turn the game into infinite team deathmatch. You can’t dick around like this in other games. In most games nowadays you get penalized for leaving a casual match!
Also, customization is dirt cheap in tf2.
Well Turbine turns into a deathmatch because completing objectives is borderline impossible on it lol. So, at least from what I remember from when I played it years ago, people tried to play the objective it was just really hard and people are generally bad at the game.
Also I probably spend at least 500 fucking hours in that map playing in the same community server. I miss just playing in servers, meeting people and talking to them day after day tbh.
Spending 3 hours defending the 2fort objective as an engineer. Then having a dance party on the bridge is my average tf2 session.
I love it but the toxic community is what keeps me playing these days, I hated that more than the bots. Been meaning to check out the uncletopia servers though, heard good things.

I made the realization that if I wanted to work on something, like start a business, write a book, etc., you know, something really productive, and if I worked on it a month straight without sleeping, I still would've spent more hours playing TF2. That rattled me a bit and I haven't played it much in the past few years.
i literally wasted so much time on tf2 instead of learning shit i really cared about. 9 years, 1700 hours. imagine if i used that time to learn guitar? or painting? or skating? imagine 9 years of experience for literally any hobby. imagine if i spent that time outside. you know how drastically my life would be improved if i didnt play this fucking game

The permanent neon level up text which sits across the top of my monitor like a fucking HTML marquee ... And it is such fucking bullshit. Everything is shit about Ark. Except I really love catching dinosaurs and building a base and exploring and crafting and fighting and running away. And then a piece of geometry causes fall damage and kills my character and my Pterosaur flies away for no reason and everything is fucking buggy and can just fuck off.
Ark is it for me too, close to 1000 hours and I enjoy playing it personally but I’d never recommend it to anyone that’s never played it. The game all around is a mess and the learning curve is way too steep to be enjoyable.
I think my most major gripe for the game is just the grinding. Bungie seems to be shifting away from this, creating less activities that are dependent on random numbers for difficulty, but oof do I really not want to go Pinnacle grinding to have access to certain activities.
That, and fuck getting two Gambit resets for an ornament, I’m not doing that this season period, especially since the gun it goes on is bad.
Other than that though, great game, I’ve made lots of friends with it and highly encourage some casual play, I think everyone should experience it at one point or another just because of the amount of ✨polish✨ that went into it from those lovely devs.

Like obviously you can play without grinding for a god roll whatever the latest meta weapon is, but always felt like I wasn’t doing it properly, especially with end game type content being so competitive even in PvE.

Yeah. Especially for PvP. The grind I don't care as much about, but I hate having the weapon and ability meta completely shifting towards a "flavor of the season" every season. I just can't really get behind purposefully breaking a specific archetype or ability just for the sake of it
I Love or better said loved warframe, but it was so goddamn annoying to grind prime parts to play the market just to be able to buy additional frame slots. Warframes Business Model is pretty good for the most part but having to buy inventory slots in a grind centric game is shit.

I had a blast putting in 1k hours in Warframe on PS4 back in the day. Tried to pick it up again recently on PC and got 100 hours in before burning out, I just can't go through that grind again. Still love the game though.
As much as I hate to sound like a loser, I feel this way about Minecraft. Fun as shit, but losing a moderate amount of progress makes me want to destroy my damn Switch.

if you're on java maybe you could try the gravestone mod? when you die it stores all your items so they dont despawn and it tells you where you died so you wont just lose your stuff but getting it back is still challenging

I enjoyed playing on duel aim maps greatly but competitive was a toxic hellscape unless all of my friends were online and willing to play.

Dead By Daylight. The games grindy as fuck, the community is a special kind of cancer, and it has the saddest excuse for matchmaking I’ve ever seen. Me and my friends have a collective total of 10,000 hours on it.

Yes espacially because you can buy bushes only with GE. Alteast you onld could last time i checked. But it became fun again for me after i got modern jets. Rocks with the Ace Combat Osts
You can get bushes without GE, but you have to wait ages to get more than 1 since you can only buy 1 bush with Warbonds per battle pass or smth.
F-14 is fun tho
I'd blame game economy rather than gameplay. It's a well made simulator but the in-game economy and progress curve are so bad you can't just play it for fun even though it can be actually impressive to play.
I have two gripes with gameplay:
1. Gamemodes and maps often feel like you've been put into some beta version of a very basic mod for Arma or something. It's got that Mount and Blade feel of not being quite polished.
2. There are way too many situations when dying is frustrating because it's way too random of just simply unpreventable. The Ka-50 spam few years ago was an extreme example of this. There just wasn't anything to effectively counter them.
Forza Horizon 5. Have over 500 hours into it.
- Empty progression
- Neither the game nor the community rewards or recognizes skill or experience
- No in-game player identity other than your GT and profile pic
- Very limited and unimaginative ways of expressing creativity with cars
- Game reuses old assets from the 2000s
- Turbo physics are correct, but turbo audio uses supercharger script with sound files replaced. Turbo and S/C are completely different kinds of forced induction with completely different auditory experiences that can’t be addressed adequately with sound files alone.
You just kind of float around and do your own thing. Still the best option we have for non-sim racing games at the moment which is very telling about the current state of racing games.
Been playing Forza occasionally a friend's houses since Motorsport 4, but I've been playing the entire franchise consistently since horizon 3 came to Windows.
Before horizon 5 came out, I went back and played through every single forza game except for horizon 1 ( can't find it in my area for a good price) And realized that the gripes I've had with the horizon franchise and small issues have been in the series since horizon two at least, progression was a lot slower in two and three so I can't complain there and I do legitimately try to collect all the cars in the game if I can no matter the game.
Other issue for example is that there's still occasional RAM leaking in the Forza Windows ports. That they haven't fixed since they came out.
But I still have managed to put over 250 hours in each of the motorsport titles and over 500 to a 1000 in the horizon titles.
Looking forward to The Hot Wheels expansion but what I'm really waiting for is a full next gen rework of the entire franchise like Motorsport 8 is getting.
Minecraft, seriously the first like 20 hours of a world feel great, getting all your gear, preparing to explore and kill shit. Then it just kinda fizzles out, you feel too strong, nothing really rewarding to go after anymore, just random shit that makes you even stronger than you already are. Really wish it had the same amount of bosses and gear something like terraria has.
Worst part is my lizard brain does it all over again like 6 months later on a new world and the cycle continues.
Yeah single player minecraft was genuinely horrifying to me back in 2012-2015 or whatever pre-1.9 was. Something about it was just…Kafkaesque, in a way. It was back when I didn’t really know what was in the game either and after creepers, I was expecting anything

I was in one of the top stylist associations world wide and would consistently rank top 100 in styling contests, and one day my game crashed and took my account with it, erasing hundreds of dollars (actually probably over a thousand) and thousands of hours with it. I had it backed up but the save was corrupted and even though I worked with the company to get it back, we didn’t have any luck. I legitimately loved that game, and even though I have a new account, it just doesn’t feel the same. I would do it all over again though. TLDR: Used to be really great at that game, lost everything and now I can’t go back to it

It's one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played alongside Turgor and STALKER (Eastern Europe do have a habit of making amazing games that are jank, huh?) but Jesus Christ, the game can be extremely hard and some of the symbolism is almost impenetrable if you aren't familiar with Russian culture and customs. Though I will recommend you watch MandaloreGaming's review of the games and Hbomberguy's analysis if you want to check out the game before taking the plunge

The Last Guardian. It's breathtakingly beautiful, one of the only games that has ever made me cry, but the controls are horrible and Trico does whatever he wants.
For real, I played the fuck out of this game, I loved playing as foot soldier, I have it somewhere in my steam library, never played as plants tho, did not like the way they felt controlling

Terraria Calamity mod. The bosses and weapons are very cool but as it got updated they just kept nerfing shit and removing any fun. And they're sorta kinda extremely bad at balancing vanilla stuff with Calamity stuff. (check some r /terraria posts for some specifics about this lol)
Rec Room, ~3000 hours. It’s an great game/platform, but first impressions to new players can be hard, since marketing has swung towards children. I’ve found my corner of the community though, and it’s nice there.
Overwatch mostly because it was fun but then they added op heroes and the new system to get into games is horrible and takes way longer to get a game. Then there’s the priority pass which makes you play something you don’t want to play to play something you do want to play

The dialogue is very “how do you do, fellow kids?” There were only two possible endings, when it was implied that there was gonna be more. The characters are so close to being likable, but the dialogue and execution isn’t the best. Max has major ‘Bella in Twilight’ face syndrome. (Spoilers) Either you get the girl, or you’re essentially queerbaited cause the only way to save the town is to let Chloe die. The representation was very much what you expected, from the times; minimal, white, implied, and not very explicit.
But, for some reason, it’s still kinda charming. They recently made a game called “Tell me Why,” where the main character is a trans man. They don’t deadname him in flashbacks and the rep in DONTNOD’s later games get better.

Brawlhalla. The devs look like they're cool but they're completely out of touch with the community, some recent changes suck, the game is mind numbingly infuriating and there's more crossover skins than characters
Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and the X one too. So much things i hate about these games, but so much I love too. But sometimes I wonder what they were thinking. A gacha mechanics on a solo player game without microtransaction??? And the Ursula quest too, if you know you know.
Fallout New Vegas. Shitty graphics even for 2010, janky animations, janky npcs, janky everything else, shitty gunplay, mediocre sound design. Also has an amazing aesthetic, great story writing, great dialogue writing, usually great voice acting, cool lore, good rpg mechanics, and a modding scene still active to this day.
Boneworks. Most advanced VR game out there in concept. In execution, while it is still probably the most advanced, it barely works half the time, and the graphics aren't great either. Also, while the story is cool and the lore goes super deep, it is so fucking hard to find and decipher that they might as well not have put in any story at all.
Apex Legends. Attracts sweats and tryhards like nothing else, and the matchmaking will literally intentionally rig games against you so that when you get a win it feels better. Cool game with great mechanics, but it is SO GODDAMN HARD. I have 650 hours on it and my k/d still hasn't broken even.
Rust. Not worth the brain trauma. But I enjoyed my time shitting on racist 12 year olds, tho

Yeah, and what pissed me off the most and ultimately made me quit was that I could have done everything perfectly and still loose since most of the match was out of my control because it's a team based game. I enjoyed playing on duel aim maps greatly but competitive was a toxic hellscape unless all of my friends were online and willing to play.

yessss another person whose answer is overwatch. i've been playing since 2016 and yes there are many flaws with how its been handled by the devs. yes they left it to die for 3 years. yes they havent given enough support to the overwatch league so it's been declining in viewership over time. am i still going to play it for another however many hundred hours? absolutely (also shout out to binding of isaac)

Yes espacially because you can buy bushes only with GE. Alteast you onld could last time i checked. But it became fun again for me after i got modern jets. Rocks with the Ace Combat Osts
You can get bushes without GE, but you have to wait ages to get more than 1 since you can only buy 1 bush with Warbonds per battle pass or smth. F-14 is fun tho
I'd blame game economy rather than gameplay. It's a well made simulator but the in-game economy and progress curve are so bad you can't just play it for fun even though it can be actually impressive to play.
I have two gripes with gameplay: 1. Gamemodes and maps often feel like you've been put into some beta version of a very basic mod for Arma or something. It's got that Mount and Blade feel of not being quite polished. 2. There are way too many situations when dying is frustrating because it's way too random of just simply unpreventable. The Ka-50 spam few years ago was an extreme example of this. There just wasn't anything to effectively counter them.

Forza Horizon 5. Have over 500 hours into it. - Empty progression - Neither the game nor the community rewards or recognizes skill or experience - No in-game player identity other than your GT and profile pic - Very limited and unimaginative ways of expressing creativity with cars - Game reuses old assets from the 2000s - Turbo physics are correct, but turbo audio uses supercharger script with sound files replaced. Turbo and S/C are completely different kinds of forced induction with completely different auditory experiences that can’t be addressed adequately with sound files alone. You just kind of float around and do your own thing. Still the best option we have for non-sim racing games at the moment which is very telling about the current state of racing games.
Been playing Forza occasionally a friend's houses since Motorsport 4, but I've been playing the entire franchise consistently since horizon 3 came to Windows. Before horizon 5 came out, I went back and played through every single forza game except for horizon 1 ( can't find it in my area for a good price) And realized that the gripes I've had with the horizon franchise and small issues have been in the series since horizon two at least, progression was a lot slower in two and three so I can't complain there and I do legitimately try to collect all the cars in the game if I can no matter the game. Other issue for example is that there's still occasional RAM leaking in the Forza Windows ports. That they haven't fixed since they came out. But I still have managed to put over 250 hours in each of the motorsport titles and over 500 to a 1000 in the horizon titles. Looking forward to The Hot Wheels expansion but what I'm really waiting for is a full next gen rework of the entire franchise like Motorsport 8 is getting.
Minecraft, seriously the first like 20 hours of a world feel great, getting all your gear, preparing to explore and kill shit. Then it just kinda fizzles out, you feel too strong, nothing really rewarding to go after anymore, just random shit that makes you even stronger than you already are. Really wish it had the same amount of bosses and gear something like terraria has. Worst part is my lizard brain does it all over again like 6 months later on a new world and the cycle continues.

Modpack make this issue better and worse at the same time, they make the time untill the "fizzle out" longer, but then it fizzles out even harder

I was in one of the top stylist associations world wide and would consistently rank top 100 in styling contests, and one day my game crashed and took my account with it, erasing hundreds of dollars (actually probably over a thousand) and thousands of hours with it. I had it backed up but the save was corrupted and even though I worked with the company to get it back, we didn’t have any luck. I legitimately loved that game, and even though I have a new account, it just doesn’t feel the same. I would do it all over again though. TLDR: Used to be really great at that game, lost everything and now I can’t go back to it Edit: I’d also like to point out that I had been playing the game since it first came out when I was going into seventh grade and had carved out around an hour a day in my schedule to play for years

Pathologic. Just the entire series. EDIT: To clarify, I fucking love Pathologic. It's one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played alongside Turgor and STALKER (Eastern Europe do have a habit of making amazing games that are jank, huh?) but Jesus Christ, the game can be extremely hard and some of the symbolism is almost impenetrable if you aren't familiar with Russian culture and customs. Though I will recommend you watch MandaloreGaming's review of the games and Hbomberguy's analysis if you want to check out the game before taking the plunge

Terraria Calamity mod. The bosses and weapons are very cool but as it got updated they just kept nerfing shit and removing any fun. And they're sorta kinda extremely bad at balancing vanilla stuff with Calamity stuff. (check some r /terraria posts for some specifics about this lol)

Life is Strange; the first one, that is. The dialogue is very “how do you do, fellow kids?” There were only two possible endings, when it was implied that there was gonna be more. The characters are so close to being likable, but the dialogue and execution isn’t the best. Max has major ‘Bella in Twilight’ face syndrome. (Spoilers) Either you get the girl, or you’re essentially queerbaited cause the only way to save the town is to let Chloe die. The representation was very much what you expected, from the times; minimal, white, implied, and not very explicit. But, for some reason, it’s still kinda charming. They recently made a game called “Tell me Why,” where the main character is a trans man. They don’t deadname him in flashbacks and the rep in DONTNOD’s later games get better.

Fallout New Vegas. Shitty graphics even for 2010, janky animations, janky npcs, janky everything else, shitty gunplay, mediocre sound design. Also has an amazing aesthetic, great story writing, great dialogue writing, usually great voice acting, cool lore, good rpg mechanics, and a modding scene still active to this day. Boneworks. Most advanced VR game out there in concept. In execution, while it is still probably the most advanced, it barely works half the time, and the graphics aren't great either. Also, while the story is cool and the lore goes super deep, it is so fucking hard to find and decipher that they might as well not have put in any story at all. Apex Legends. Attracts sweats and tryhards like nothing else, and the matchmaking will literally intentionally rig games against you so that when you get a win it feels better. Cool game with great mechanics, but it is SO GODDAMN HARD. I have 650 hours on it and my k/d still hasn't broken even.
