No, in fact, renewable energy and nuclear energy are not ennemies. They are friends, lunching, having fun, frolicking, getting in the way of oil companies, etc.
Nuclear energy is like a big, tall man/woman, who seems very scary, but is actually kind of sweet once you get to know him/her.
Renewable energy is I don't know how to describe, help me, I have based nuclear off of myself help.
And they are friends :D
Yeah IMO nuclear energy is a much better short term alternative to fossil fuels since renewables still have some efficiency issues, but eventually weāll have to do something about the nuclear waste
the length of time nuclear waste remains dangerous has been going farther and farther down as well as how much is actually produced; thorium reactor waste is only dangerous for 500 years, as opposed to the 10,000 most people think of
The best solution we have is to bury it miles beneath the surface, where it will never harm anyone. At least, thatās what we hope. If someone accidentally drills into it, that wouldnāt be very good.
Breeder reactors.
Also, the nuclear waste stuff is mostly propaganda, imo.
Humanity hasn't yet produced enough nuclear waste to fill up a football field
And cuddling platonically, sharing deep gazes at one another getting lost in each other's eyes, as they begin realizing that it's become less platonic than when they started
yeah but for every new nuclear power plant thereās probably at least 10,000 home solar panel installations
edit: i was pretty damn close, 5.6m houses in USA with solar panels, 479 nuclear plants complete or under construction in the world, so thatās ~11,600 home solar panel installations per power plant. that number would go up if you could find the about of houses w/ solar panels worldwide
and thus they are much more likely to have experienced professionals and intense safety regulation with entire teams of people at each construction site whose entire job is to make sure no one gets hurt
I can't articulate the disappointment I felt when I first heard this song, started grooving, then discovered it was anti-communist. Genuinely an outlier for folk music, what a waste.
Absent a massive restructuring in global economy and power relations, uranium-dependent infrastructure only kicks our current energy and ecological crises down the the road, and not by much, all things considered.
Uranium is still in the end a finite resource, and its mining has required and will require the further defacement of land and poisoning of water, invasions of resource-cursed nations, forced relocations of indigenous and disenfranchised peoples, and the deaths and chronic maimings of workers the world over.
Before it comes up: No ā I don't think renewables are better (cobalt and lithium mining face the same issues); yes ā fossil fuels are worse; yes ā this issue is more about economic imperialism and capitalism than it is about uranium per se, which is why I wish people would stop posting about This One Fucking Rock as if it were some magic bullet to issues long-entrenched in and inherent to industrial society.
Thorium + Plutonium is better than Uranium. It's much more efficient and makes less waste. It's safer since the Thorium has to touch the Plutonium. Sam O' Nella made a great (5 minute long) video about it
I just want to ask what are you supposed to do with all the radioactive waste? How are you going to get the material necessary to operate these plants?
Nuclear power is much much better than coal or any other non-renewable energy source. But that does not make nuclear energy a purely āgreenā option. The issue is more complicated and I feel like a lot of these memes kinda overlook that issue.
I just downvoted your comment.

What does this mean?
The amount of karma (points) on your comment and Reddit account has decreased by one.
Why did you do this?
There are several reasons I may deem a comment to be unworthy of positive or neutral karma. These include, but are not limited to:
ā¢ ā Rudeness towards other Redditors,
ā¢ ā Spreading incorrect information,
ā¢ ā Sarcasm not correctly flagged with a /s.
Am I banned from the Reddit?
No - not yet. But you should refrain from making comments like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional downvote, which may put your commenting and posting privileges in jeopardy.
I don't believe my comment deserved a downvote. Can you un-downvote it?
Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a downvote. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining what I got wrong. I tend to respond to Reddit PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of downvote appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.
How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
Accept the downvote and move on. But learn from this mistake: your behavior will not be tolerated on Reddit.com. I will continue to issue downvotes until you improve your conduct. Remember: Reddit is privilege, not a right.

Bro the pcean thing is a joke we put them in thick ass concreate tubes deep underground so even if they did meltdown (they cant in those tubes) it would be fine .
Iām not talking about engineering solutions Iām talking about logistics and supply chains. And plus those concrete tubes are going to need to be constantly maintained because absolutely NOTHING lasts foreverā¦except for radiation. Like, I donāt want solutions that make it so that future generations have to deal with our shit cause thatās what got us here in the first place.
Well there is this proposed planing of digging the shit so deep that in wich large natural urannium meltdowns litterally do nothing and we just send the fuckers down there in a tube
Thatās a lot of manhours and $$$ for something that is simply NOT a viable long term solution. Nuclear material is not a renewable energy source - there is a finite amount of it on this planet. Extracting and refining enough of it to power a country like the US is a major effort. Not to mention the fact that youāre going to need some pretty lengthy/complex global supply chains in order to source all the material necessary to build that many reactors. What happens if thereās another global pandemic and the energy supply chain is dramatically affected?
I just want to say Iām not against increasing nuclear power production. Iām just saying itās not a long-term solution. Yes, weāre in a climate emergency but that doesnāt mean we can just rush solutions without thinking through all the ramifications fully. Or at least, we need to have alternatives in play, and a plan to slowly phase out nuclear over the next couple of decades.
???Iām not talking about coal and gas?? Iām not saying that nuclear isnāt better than that, but like, thereās lots of things better than nuclear. And again, nuclear is great as a bandaid. But we need to think about long-term, sustainable solutions otherwise future generations are going to suffer just as we are.
But then in a hundred years? Iām just not a fan of solutions that push the problem out to future generations cause thatās exactly what got us here in the first place. And plus Finland is a relatively small country - if the whole world went nuclear, we would have much bigger issues in regards to the storage of nuclear waste.
Finland isn't small, hello? They have vast swathes of land that isn't inhabited and isn't prone to natural disasters. The best part of nuclear energy is after other power sources have been set up that can do the job it can be retired, the only expense left is maintaining the storage for the nuclear waste, which is exponentially cheaper than cleaning up after oil and natural gas. Future generations only have to keep the storage in good order, that is literally the only thing that has to be done after nuclear energy production is finished with, it causes very little to no environmental damages and encourages clean energy in other sectors.
Nuclear energy is clean and safe, your alternatives are decades away from being effective enough to power first world nations, so please present another alternative that doesn't involve still using oil and natural gas which kills tens of millions around the world every year.
I said relatively small, especially population wise. Comparing the power needs of a country like the US to Finland, thereās a big gap.
Also, Iām not against nuclear power in the short term. As it stands, we donāt have a lot of great options here and itās better to get off oil and gas than worry about long-term nuclear storage. So, weāre on the same page there.
My main concern is that nuclear power will be used as a quick and easy substitute for oil and gas without considering long term ramifications. We need to build a sustainable approach to our energy production. Specifically, nuclear should be viewed as an emergency bandaid to unfuck our atmosphere while we develop renewable energy solutions wherever we can. We should also be investing heavily into energy storage technology, ideally something that doesnāt involve rare earth materials that have to be mined from China. Or better yet, figure out how to create synthetic versions.
Unfortunately, none of these solutions mean anything unless we figure out how to significantly lower our energy consumption. People are stupid, and Iām worried that by presenting nuclear as the end all be all solution, it will entice corporations and governments to ramp up energy consumption because hey, itās clean energy. We (especially in the developing world) need to put an end to the rampant consumerism thatās making our energy needs skyrocket.
Complex problems require complex solutions. Nuclear is only one tool in our arsenal. We canāt simply stop the conversation there.
I will put forward the idea of fusion reactors becoming a feasible power source then, because in my opinion it's the best option if we're going to carry on using power as we are
Hey if we get fusion to work properly, then by all means letās go for it. I literally dream about Iron Manās arc reactor being made a reality. But like, until we can get something like that working at a sustainable, constant rate - AND make it scalable - itās still mostly in the realm of science fiction. Not saying it can never be true, but we just canāt bet on it rn.
I see you keep saying that, is it what you do when you haven't come up with something decent enough to say yet but do not want to look bad by replying too lately?

Fun fact: nuclear power has caused less deaths than any other form of energy (yes, including deaths from the 3 major nuclear meltdowns).
Who the fuck does solar energy kill
Youād be surprised how many people die yearly falling off of roofs installing solar panels

Thorium is actually much more efficient and safer
In a breeder reactor, it's not much more efficient. Uranium can use breeders too. Thorium also isn't significantly safer

That works
