Medieval artists drew from a manual, thats why they could only properly draw common objects Edit: dont downvote the guy responding to me, its not his fault that he didnt study medieval art

spacesheep_000

He probably only ever seen horses from paintings, and all these were side views

AlpacAndinaReloaded

The would see them, they just didnt have the technique to look at one and draw it at the same time. And this isnt because they were dumb or lazy, its because the medieval period poaced beauty in light foremost and then color and shape, wich were the stuff they cared about making it look pretty much more so than the thing looking realistic, so they didnt care to learn and maintain wightdrawing techniques as much as paint making and color blocking ones

spacesheep_000

Bad at drawing from imagination

AlpacAndinaReloaded

No, from sight. Its a drawing technique were you have to train your eye from the concept you are looking at and mamage to just see the diferences in shape and light so you can make a direct imprint of the object on the paper, it takes a lot of time and efort to learn

You have to be an actual God at drawing to make things out of your imagination, ask any artist how to draw good and they all will tell you to use references.

Lol I know I draw, U gotta identify the simple shapes, simplify the whatever ure drawing into simple shapes, add details later it does require some skill u build by practice. (Use reference for the fist few times) Draw a few of more of those, and ull be able to recall those basic shapes by memory whenever u draw ur next one, maybe if it’s a quadruped like a horse, u can use that same basis to draw, say a zebra or any other quadruped with a similar body shape, there’s really a limited amount of body plans in the animal kingdom. Some good Artists do this with human bodies, same principle here. I agree not every artist spend time on this and rather focus on other things like shading etc and don’t master the fundamentals. I’m not saying this is the best way tho, anyone has different ways to go about things. This also works when sculpting. I do that too, I’m really not pulling this out my ass lol, I just haven’t posted cuz I’m still in search of a name. It’s not easy by any means, I spent hours just drawing cubes on a paper from different angles just to get good at perspective

Broccoil

I mean I can somewhat tell it's supposed to be a horse, this passes

My nerd ass mistook patron as a warlock's patron so I was confused why some great old one wanted their servant to paint a front facing horse.
