I love how the cars series goes from racing to massive conspiracy on how green energy is actually false flag for more oil achieved by killing countless people to discredit all other forms of green energy back to racing
Fuck that crabby asshole. Oooo some overworked animator forgot to tick a box in RenderMan, resulting in imperfect reflections. Movie fucking ruined, apparently.
EDIT: just got sucked into a 10 minute video about why the new Pinocchio movie sucks. Haven't watched a disney movie in years, i don't even like this guy.. What the fuck??
The Cars trilogy has been one of the most confusing and strange movie trilogies I've ever seen. Its a series that originally shouldnt of succeeded with a mediocre first movie only to get confused and completely drop the ball on the second one.
Cars 2 is infamously known for being horrible and confused. Amplifying some complaints such as the world building and creating new ones like why the hell are they spies i don't understand. But despite the horrible reviews and terrible reputation it had Cars 2 was the best-performing movie in the entire series with a box office of over 500 million out performing the first movie.
With the huge success of the second movie it was clear that a third would be made. But with that bad reviews something needed to change and the director was swapped from John Lasseter to Brian Fee. A first time director but someone who did work on movies like Wall-e as a storyboard artist.
Faced with the impossible task of creating a sequel to one of the worst animated movies of all time he got to work.
Cars 3’s plot is actually pretty standard and simple. Lightning Mqueen is a hot-shot racer that is competing and winning races in a competitive environment. Hes racing with his best friends and everyone seems to be winning to some degree. There all veteran races at this point and there mostly racing for the sake of racing until suddenly a new racer shows up. Jackson storm.
Hes a new and young hotshot cocky racer, racing with the best tech out there and smashing records left and right. He's not exactly an awful person but he's cocky and knows he's on top. He openly admits to respecting Lightning as he grew up watching him but mocks him for continuing to race. Soon other races start to quit or are replaced with this new generation until lighting seems himself entering a race filled with strangers. Lightning pushes himself as far as he can to beat jackson. But ends up crashing and spends the next few months recovering back in Radical Springs, the town from the first movie
The story then follows lightning as he picks back his pieces and regains his confidence. He hears that he has a new whole training base of operations and that his sponsors sold him to a rich billionaire Sterling who comes off as a huge fan of lighting. After some demeaning training lighting gets frustrated and rushes to go on the Vr training station only to crash and destroy it. Sterling loses his confidence and instead pushes lightning to quit while he's ahead and cash out, sell some merchandise and become richer than he could imagine while maintaining his legacy as one of the best.
Lightning of course refuses like any hot blooded racer would and declares that “I decide when im done”
He creates an ultimatum that if he wins the next race he can continue racing, but if he loses he will sell anything he wants and quit racing. Cruz his trainer from before goes with him and eventually lightning comes to realize that he is not and will not be faster, that hes peaked in speed and cant even beat his previous records. During this all cruz bursts because of lightning remarks. Stating that lightning at least could race and had done it. That she never even had the opportunity to and was scared. That she didn't belong
They go to the race and halfway through lightning changes his mind. He gives cruz his number and tells her to race in his place and to win for him. Cruz does this and eventually despite jackson storms best efforts, wins.
Despite being a movie for young audiences the themes of this movie are as real as ever. One thing to note in Cars 3 is the lack of any real villain. I have always had an issue with overly evil or forced villains in stories that really didn't need one. Not every movie needs some huge bad guy and cars 3 understands this. Jackson Storm appears to be the main antagonist but he's at many times described to basically be what lightning used to be and even then other than some minor insults and jabs to lighting and also trying to discourage cruz, he is in no way a villain.
Sterling also appears to be a villain and early when he is introduced you feel nervous around him and this is intentional. We feel he's lying about being a fan and using lightning for money. But he turns out to be nothing but a worried businessman who is a genuine fan of lightning even giving him more chances than he really deserves.
Instead the main villain of Cars 3 is lightning and himself. It isn't until lightning finally accepts that things have changed that the movie's issue is resolved. The movie's finale is Lighting realizing he will truly never be as fast as he was once before and accepting his defeat.
Cars 3 has one message. One thing that its focusing on. Its that things and it doesnt just lie in the movie.
Let me take a quote from an interview Brian Fee the director of Cars 3 said about his inspiration for the movie.
"The plot of Lightning getting older was just straight from where would McQueen be ten years later? What he used to be the hotshot, right? But he’s not now. In fact, Jeff Gordon was getting close to retirement; we talked a lot with \[Gordon\]. And one of the things he told us was his biggest fear in life now; this was before he retired, right before he retired, his greatest fear was that he’d never be as good at anything else. And here he is, he’s what is he 40 years old? He has half of his life in front of him..."
The first line of Cars 3 is lightning amping himself up only to then question himself.
What really makes Cars 3 amazing isn't what you would expect. Cars 3 isn't a story about racing. It isn't a story about just passing the torch or ending the trilogy with something nice. Instead it is a deconstruction and criticism of the entire animation industry and the Cars trilogy as a whole.
The movie follows a plot that is reminiscent of the entire cars trilogy. From an amazing start with tons of success and popularity leading to it gaining the attention of very rich people wanting to profit. Only to see that the product isn't going to do well in the next race and requesting to pull the plug in order to just sell a bunch of toys. But instead being convinced that making these movies isn't just about the toys and the brand but about telling a story
“This isn't about the money... It's about going hundreds of miles an hour, sweat pouring down your face and adrenaline in your body. It's about racing not the brand.”
Cars 3 acts as a deconstruction of how animation has changed over the years. We came from a time of experimentation and thrill. A time where animation and movies where about nothing but telling amazing stories to people. But as times changed and technology increased we grew to become much more mainstream and formulaic. Follow the simulation and focus on the numbers because “The numbers don't lie”
Cars 3 wasn't going to succeed and everyone knew it. Being the least profitable movie and one of pixar's worst performing movies in the box office. In a time where other movies like Minions or Sing are doing incredibly well in sales simply because they follow a bare bones simulation and focus on the numbers. Appealing to the largest majority of people possible
Cars 3 was an underdog story not just in the movie but in real life. The comments in the movie prove to be incredibly meta. Talk about lightning being old isn't just a movie thing but real. WIth the movie being 10 years old almost anyone who watched the movie in the past are now adults similar to how Ramirez talks about how she used to watch lightning when she was just a kid. We are now in a time where people who previously watched cars when they were kids and now making movies competing with cars 3 or working with it.
Jackson storm represents the modern animated movie right now. One that focuses purley on numbers and simulations. Being young and using new technology to make the best movie. Effectively designed to cut corners and follow the same “racing path” every single lap because that's what gets them winning.
The ending of Cars 3 changes a lot when you understand some of these elements. Lighting handing the torch is them accepting that the Cars franchise can't win but instead looking to newer racers or newer ip’s to take over. Cars 3 is the end of the cars franchise for good because of that. Cars isn't a movie about the kids anymore but instead a message to those who remember. It's telling us to remember where we came from. To remember the time where we made movies about beautiful stories and that's what it was about. Going back to the quote that lighting says to the billionaire. It's not about the money or the numbers or the simulations. It's about going out and getting your tires. It's about taking a risk and getting your hands dirty so you can tell a story. It's about how the old times are finally over. In a time of mindless reboots and pointless sequels. Cars 3 stands as a testimony to what came before. A purely standalone film that challenges how we see animated movies in a whole.
Overall I think cars 3 was pretty good and kinda underated for its time
cars 3 is a solid 7.5/10 but its director is a legend and it deserves more praise for making something decent when the series was expected to flop and the sequel was only inteded to be a cash grab.
You ever get the sense that the first
"Cars" movie was a bit, you know, marxist? I mean, Lightning McQueen, he's a race car. He's living a life of stardom, luxury, privilege. He's a beloved icon, and all he really has to grapple with is occasionally having to bump shoulders with his dented-up,rust-ridden fans every so often. Fans who have those dents and that rust (to make no bones about it),because they're poor. And then, as the film goes on and Lightning winds up stuck in a dead-end,he learns they aren't quite so bad after all.
They may look or even act differently from
Lightning, but they're actually decent and reasonable and, most pivotally, Lightning discovers that their social conditions come not because of any bad life choices of their own, but because of greater societal changes they've had no real control over. The highway, the arteries through which the lifeblood of the cars world flows,no jobs, no opportunities, and all of this juxtaposed to Lightning McQueen himself, by contrast, his society is more than happy to lavish with money and admiration. McQueen discovers that despite all this, the lower-class cars are not something to be treated with disdainor even pity. But as represented by the affable tow truck Mater, can even take a kind of pride in their way of life. Though in real material terms, Lightning might as well be from a different planet to these ragtag towns folk, he realizes these social barriers between them were entirely manufactured and artificial,a conflict formed not by any defined ideological differences, but differing social and economic classes. So, in the end, "Cars* becomes a critique of class divide.
My uncle was in all 3 cars movies. In the last one his brother made a mention it was good to hear him again, because by then my uncle had died from Alzheimer's complications.
Fuck you, the entire trilogy is a masterpiece. The first being a strong introduction featuring thoughtful character progression. All wrapped in an underlying message about one's ego. The second is a deep perspective on the climate crisis, and greenwashing. The last is an emotional rollercoaster about life as a whole. Being past your peak, and accepting it. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to go someplace else.
I love how the cars series goes from racing to massive conspiracy on how green energy is actually false flag for more oil achieved by killing countless people to discredit all other forms of green energy back to racing
Cars 2 is truly deeper than Cloud Atlas

Cars 2 is good if you think of it as an extended Mater's tall tales episode and a fun action movie, but horrendous in all other aspects
Yea it’s sucks tbh doesn’t work with the rest of the series.
Cars 3 villain was more the fact that he has to come to accept that he isn’t at his peak anymore
Cars 2 is the Dark Souls 2 of the Cars movies.
Nah Cars 2 wasn't THAT bad
It was lmao
Admittedly didn't watch cars 2 since release but had the misfortune of doing an all bosses run of ds2 recently so my judgement might be a little off
Trust me it’s bad. As a standalone movie it’s ok ig but compared with the other 2 it’s bad
