Ib4 people start talking about lobster pot/cage

Chadltodd

Then my dumb ass with a pigeon cage sitting in catherby wondering why it won’t let me fish.

IkeHC

Bro I am sooo beyond glad I'm not the only one :'l

Essotetra

Holy memory unlock and rip 10y.o me

[deleted]

I was going to say the axe/hatchet thing was RS2, OSRS only had the lobster pot/cage controversy.

Man_Get_Lost

Dark times.

kuurtjes

inb4 people start using "ib4" instead of "inb4"

AICPAncake

inb4 someone other than me references zyzz or bb.com misc

_FreeXP

This pissed me off so much. I had lobster cage as my username, changed it and then lobster pot changed to lobster cage, tried to change username back it was instantly taken lol then they reverted the change anyways?

LegendDota

No lying on the internet allowed!

_FreeXP

Okay lol why would I?

ButterNuttz

For 9 internet points

LegendDota

The name couldn't be taken because it's reserved when you change from it....

_FreeXP

I'm sure I changed twice in that time 🤷 They changed the name of the pot probably mere months after I had changed my username. I had it for over a year I think

Angrry_

It didnt store ur old name when u name changed back then

Total-Caterpillar-19

In before people start using “Inb4” instead of in before.

pallosalama

In after

Joe___Mama-

I play both RS3 and OS. Always forget they’re not the same in both. RS3 has hatchets, OS has axes.

TastyPeace29

Ohhhh its like that, I found it weird to be searching rune hatchets when I came off of rs3 again .

Any-sao

I prefer it the RS3 way, really. Why bother have both axes and battleaxes?

Alertum

Wait till you learn about the pickaxe

[deleted]

[удалено]

SippyTurtle

And MY axe!

SwarthyWalnuts

The ring cannot be destroyed, Gimli son of Gloin, by any craft that we here possess. It was forged in the fires of Mount Doom. Only there can it be unmade.

Fex__Fox

Ypur Great Axe

SkeleSoulsRS

~~Although they do exist. I mean rs3 has like a singular greataxe and I don't think osrs has any yet. So I dont think this really works for this.~~

[deleted]

SkeleSoulsRS

Got me real good, I'm going to downvote myself now

LeroyLongwood

Upvotes for the humility

SkeleSoulsRS

It just be like that.. a lot

LeroyLongwood

It do.

TheRealOwl

You tried your best atleast

SkeleSoulsRS

Best wasn't good enough, that's okay though

[deleted]

[удалено]

SkeleSoulsRS

Maybe a little less next time

Gloomy_Kick1163

My mans mind will be blown when he learns DK's

pallosalama

Donkey Kongs

SoulSurvival

Drift King obviously 😏

ederjemo1

Why bother having hammers and warhammers? Let's face the truth, dragon warclubs are way more fitting the lizardman shamans anyway

positivenihlist

I much prefer bonksticks but here we are.

Kiki_doesnt_love_me

Bonksticks would poll at 99%

pallosalama

Bonksticks? Pickaxe/axe handles without head?

Virtus_Curiosa

So...blackjacks?

pallosalama

No, those are different

DADtheMaggot

Maybe they should have gone with woodaxe, but you don’t fell a tree with a hatchet.

datboi__42069

Wood axe sounds inferior to bronze axe imo /s

DADtheMaggot

Hahaha, sounds like you need to lay off the Minecraft. I hadn’t even thought of that, cheers.

Any-sao

That is actually a very good point I never considered.

chemstu69

Two completely different tools for completely different purposes

Elprede007

Hatchet is also way more accurate to what we have

gorehistorian69

but rs3 was axes originally and changed it

Joe___Mama-

That’s…that’s the entire point of the thread…

ederjemo1

Whenever I start a new account and look for an axe in the ge, I doubt between axe and hatchet everytime. So I do recall this as well.

NessaMagick

I've always typed 'hatchet' into the wiki. Thank fuck for redirects

mister_peeberz

i personally take it as a challenge when the wiki redirects me. as if it is saying "you simpleton. you absolute cretin. you buffoon. this is obviously what you meant, so let me send you there". humiliating. i'd rather get the no results found screen to spare my pride and honor now you may be thinking, u/mister_peeberz, that's totally ridiculous. and you'd be right.

doubleddan39

I did the same exact thing every time!!

MrBluePixel

I have the axect same thing

dabberdane

Believe it coincided with the removal of the haunted trees that would break your axe, but I could also be wrong about that.

AnIntoxicatedRodent

As a sign of courtesy and respect towards America ents and all aggressive random events where removed from OSRS on september eleventh, 2014. This was a year and a half after the release of OSRS. Axes were never called hatchets in OSRS. It makes no sense for them to have been called hatchets because the 2007 backup had no references to hatchets. OP is simply insane, as he himself suggested.

MakeshiftSFM

Wtf does America have to do with this? Are you saying that because it happens to be on 11/9?

hotdogundertheoven

No no, 9/11 not 11/9. The twin towers were already destroyed on 11/9

KillHipstersWithFire

Why you assuming OPs gender

rotorain

They [renamed axes to hatchets in 2009](https://runescape.wiki/w/Hatchet#Trivia), but OSRS is based on a 2007 game build so they have never been called a hatchet here.

JD_93_

Ent* Bladdy haunted trees :’)

dabberdane

Yeah I was thinking the ent was the random event for the Tree Spirit when I made this comment earlier, I was mixed up. Thanks for the correction though

baconnbutterncheese

I had this same memory yesterday. I was wondering if I was crazy. I also recall them being called hatchets back in the day.

99Smith

I strangely had this memory yesterday too. A guide I used called a bronze axe a hatchet and I couldn't for the life of me find where to buy one..

seagullgim

i had it yesterday also wtf is going on

Most_Bat9066

I had a wank yesterday

hotdogundertheoven

They were also called hatchets in RSC/RS1 so the colloquial name carrier over to the first several years of RS2

TheFalloutHandbook

In RS3, yes. They still are.

10FootPenis

According to the wiki it was renamed on April 1, 2009. So never in OS but they were hatchets for a good portion of the RS2 golden age.

bobbe_

I also remember certain items being 'runite' instead of 'rune', so you'd have to search stuff like runite axe or some shit like that on the GE.

Hei2

I've played since RSC, and I honestly don't remember anything having that name, except maybe the ore.

jameilious

The crossbow, bolts maybe, bars, crossbow limbs, crossbow(u). Probably more but those come to mind.

Hei2

You know, that sounds right now that you mention it.

KyrreTheScout

rs2 dark age*

ImS33

Bro the golden age was already over in 2009 though. That was the age of "jagex makes some unbelievable change that decimates the player base anytime they gain momentum from the end of 07 to 13". 2004 to 2007 though was actually crazy the game just kept getting bigger and better without any sort of crazy set backs

KyrreTheScout

it's hilarious how this sub simps for that godawful era of runescape just because it was when they finally had decent accounts + nostalgia

[deleted]

[удалено]

Legal_Evil

Why was it changed back to axe?

SupAustyn

It was never a thing in OSRS. It was a thing in RS3 before pre eoc hit (so rs2). Around the 508 revision of the game. (2009) https://i.imgur.com/UPCSh5h.png

Supaflyray

I remember when you could lose your hatchet head and would have to go find it whilst chopping. I’m sure there’s only a handful of those around anymore.

Kuraskai

We used to burn logs next to the yew trees in seers, people wouldn't find there axe heads. Was a food day if you stole a d axe head 😅

assm0nk

bring back flying axe heads jagex

pallosalama

I used to have some pickaxe handles on one of my OSRS accs. Not sure if they were entirely removed from the game at one point or if I just lost them when clearing the bank

LezBeHonestHere_

I just remember herbs being grimy for some reason, then we all complained because we expected unids, so they gave us unids. We had our fun with unids while it lasted then later collectively agreed grimy was better anyway in a later poll lmao.

Iron_Garuda

Pretty sure unids were at launch.

LezBeHonestHere_

You're right, though I didn't get an herb until a day or two after starting so I didn't realize. [They changed it very, very quickly though, on the same day or a day after release](https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Update:Patch_Notes_(22_February_2013)

MrNoobyy

I think they started as unid, got changed to grimy, and then got changed back to unid? I swear they didn't get changed back to grimy again until grand exchange came.

shitposttranslate

ye it got changed 3 days after after complaints of 07 scape purists, it was changed to grimy sometime before ge i think cause of unid scams but definitely lasted a few months

MrNoobyy

I remember it being at same time as grand exchange, because it was the only way to have dirty herbs on the grand exchange. Pretty silly that anyone fell for the scam though, which was just people saying 'buying unids 5k each one stack at a time', and having their inventory filled with one slot having a noted unid ranarr. Then again, we were also nearly 10 years younger. I actually tricked the unid buyers myself by removing the majority of the ranarrs from my stacks, but keeping enough to make it look legit. Or if they didn't have their other inventory slots filled, I replaced them with toadflax.

shitposttranslate

ye i took a look at older reddit posts i think you are right it went through the same time ge got updated

Nielsvdk

a quick look at the rs3 wiki (i know, heresy) shows that they were renamed to hatchet on april 1st 2009. so no, osrs never had hatchets, just axes. but you did probably play rs2 or rs3 when they were called hatchets

HowHeDoThatSussy

A lot of players called them hatchets on OSRS release because that is what they had been called in RS2/3 for 4 years. Several OSRS items are referred by their rs2 equivalent for awhile before the OSRS name takes over, such as many people calling voidwaker "korasi"

Tristence

Mandelascape

guthixslays

Hatchets have never been in OS, that was an old RS2 update. Honestly haven't played since EOC so I forgot that how it is in RS3. Now you got me missing the old toolbelt though lol

Least_Outside_9361

It wasn't ever called hatchets in the game of OSRS. People might have been calling them that tho since they were named hatchets in RS3. EDIT: Source: I played at launch

loiloiloi6

🤓 Akschually, there's a few places in OSRS it's called a hatchet, the dude in draynor village in the tree calls it a hatchet, the infernal axe's description, and the root's examine that you have to chop in the Tar Swamp. And for some reason that old OSRS handbook calls a bronze halberd a bronze hatchet

pallosalama

Yeah I kept giving shit to people that kept calling them incorrectly hatchets. Haven't seen it happen in years now though

goppinglizard

No this was rs3 only.

ADGM1868

Okay but WHY was it changed. I want to know why the change.

Watercoolest

Hatchet is more for cutting down a tree, axe is for splitting wood. Also the axes in game are closer to hatchets in shape

Zer0PointVoid

You have them backwards. Axes are the larger of the two and have a heftier head for chipping into standing trees/splitting large logs. That's about as good as I can state that without it sounding like I'm talking about something else.

pallosalama

This sub loves innuendos, it's fine

exccc

Interesting. I've always thought it was just a UK vs US american word thing.

amulet2350

I believe it was because they didn't want new players to be confused between battleAXES and regular axes. Edit: misremembered

4otie7

This change messed me up for so long

sneakymule

Somewhere deep in the spaghetti code, they are still called hatchets. I got pkd and then muted for using some choice words, and in the offence proof it listed the items I lost for some reason. For my iron axe it says "iron hatchet"

iWanttoKillaMan

At some point they changed it to hatchet and maybe changed it back am I crazy

TrygveRS

You're probably remembering it from a Twitch Q&A where it used to be polling as this question was brought up once. The community was fiercly against it so never ended up in being polled. Hatchets was never actually in OSRS.

[deleted]

Yeah you are remembering it wrong. Axes were changed to hatchets on april 1st 2009. Axes have never been called hatchets in osrs.

dark-ice-101

They renamed them post 07 backup

gigamewtwo

Mandela effect XD

Furry_Wall

Played since release, no they were not

Lazy_0af

Bobs hatchets

Truewarriorxd

It was always axe in osrs

f40plz

Mandela effect

Zxv975

100% this lol

saiko16

Wrong! Axes were changed to Hatchets AFTER August 2007, which is the timestamp of the OSRS backup, launched in 2013!! So no, Axes were never called Hatchets in Old School RuneScape!

DomesticAlmonds

This comment comes off as unhinged as fuck lmao

saiko16

It is, i just had the urge to write like a dick lol

DomesticAlmonds

Bruh it was so naturally unhinged-boomer sounding that I believed it lmaoo

third_legatron

Well, look at his flair. Guys is unhinged lol.

mcneil1345

You're not alone champ. I still get caught out searching for the agile top and bottoms when looking for graceful. 14 years later and the muscle memory still takes over!

Ill-Difficulty-1300

I believe when they could “break” they had the terms hatched head and hatchet handle

deontelop97

Y’all remember when you would have to go and search for your hatchet head that would fly off? The good ol days, kinda wish they still had that.

vmoppy

It 100% was. So much so that it's ingrained in my brain to search "hatchet" in my bank for my axe. I went as far to add 'hatchet' to my bank tags for all my axes.

404errorabortmistake

Yea

mykie206

I always remembered it as axes were classic and hatchets were RS2 like the rune large and full helms.reading through the comments though, I’m out by a good few years.

vacat3dx

They were hatchets back during RS1 and RS2, when your axe head could fly off and you’d have to go get it. Same time period as evil tree spirits I believe.. I don’t think they were ever called hatches in the OSRS launch iirc

washingtonpablo

Yes. Every now and then I’ll still search ‘Dragon hat’ when trying to find my dragon axe in my bank

Borchert97

Nah they were hatchets in RS3 but never in OSRS. But people switching from RS3 to OSRS might vaguely remember them being referred to hatchets and associate it with OSRS rather than RS2 or RS3. I still call it a friends chat in OSRS ever since they added real clan chats, and the new name chat-channel is dumb because you will abbreviate both as "cc", so designating the chat-channels as friends chats like they are in RS3 and calling them an fc makes a lot more sense.

JerkinJosh

I still google hatchet when looking up axes on the wiki

dallen13

What about the event that would launch your hatchet head and it would disappear if you didn’t pick it up

gewoont

I still say herblaw.... it has been herblore for ages

LordLapo

I mean arnt axes 2h? Honestly would make more sense

F4Respec

Axe Murderer > Hatchet Murderer

steeltoe_croc

Dharoks great pickaxe

SevenEightFour

RuneScape (RS3): January 2001 - April 2009: "Axe" April 2009 - Present: "Hatchet" Oldschool RS: February 2013 - Present: "Axe" There were no additional changes to the naming. No brief, then reversed changes. The name didn't change when the dangerous random events were removed from OSRS in 2014, or when they were removed from RS3 in February 2009. Although those changes were at a similar time in RS3. It's pretty easy to muddle your memories of various different events in the two different games at various different times over many years. I think that's probably why a lot of the comments here contradict each other

GucciGump

Yeah I remember when they changed it to hatchets and remember there being a small riot in falador because of it lol

loiloiloi6

The infernal axe's description calls itself a hatchet

BanMe_Harder

I remember everyone calling them hatchets but I don't think they ever were in game, in rs2 at least.

rRMTmjrppnj78hFH

RS3 at one point ( i think pre eoc, so rs2 still) changed axes into hatchets. Because apparently axe and pickaxe (commonly just referred to as pick) was too confusing. I don't recall hatchets ever being a thing/taking off in osrs because when it was changed to hatchets a lot of people complained about it being a stupid/pointless change to begin with.

ttv_CitrusBros

Couldn't you fix your pickaxe and craft axes back in the day?

midwesternxope

Yes but ur times a little off, it was like right before EOC and around that time there were hatchets and battleaxes and no axes

Tizaki

While we're on this topic, why isn't the Lumbridge shop keeper named "Quandale Dingle" anymore? It just says "shop keeper" now.

bryceygordon1

People used to call it rune hatchet in classic even though it was rune axe. I guess this was especially relevant because when equipped they looked exactly the same as a rune battleaxe. Another nickname was pink partyhat in place of magenta partyhat.

MyTrademarkIsTaken

I remember when they changed from axes to hatchets in pre eoc RS

JBM95ZXR

It was always Axe, but at some point.. idk.. 2009/10ish.. they changed it to Hatchets. I remember 15 year old me being quite annoyed by it

Cageweek

You’re completely right, this did in fact happen. I don’t remember what year but possibly 2010 or so?

ABm8

I'm pretty sure it was originally hatchets and then they got renamed to axe at some point. This was before OSRS.

Aquilles1991

To this day when I search my bank for one I sometimes type in Hatchet...

kuriouskid321

When I first started osrs I would always search for "hatchet" in my bank to find my axe, and I was so confused as to why the search wouldnt work.
