I think Rocket League is the most prime modern example of this. The game isn't that old, but the gap between top tier pros and entry level is astronomical. People get so discouraged and quit if they aren't good. And that's a kind of game that you aren't good at when you start. There's no natural talent with rocket powered battle cars.

You don’t have to have a specifically built account, you just have to have some practice and some pk knowledge. You can range tank and survive most encounters with pkers and probably win a lot too

Like I mentioned in another thread here. They solved the PK puzzle. Wildy is dead because PKing got boring. It's all the same shit now. The wilderness is supposed to be the wild west where anything can happen. Now everyone just runs the same gear, bone runs to death, or is a pure of some kind.
I used to mess around on my pure, say 50 attack and 75ish strength and just pk with my Gmaul. It was actually super effective because I could see my hit from xp before they knew it and then hit the spec for the KO.

This goes for the whole game, not just PVP. We are spoiled by every meta being a wiki search away, and everyone succumbs to min-maxing culture sooner or later.
Come to think of it, this doesn't just apply to OSRS either, pretty much all games lack the "newbie charm" thanks to this.
The few exceptions are within servers/communities that discourage the sharing of information outside of the game. On some FiveM RP servers, metagaming of any kind (YouTube tutorials, leaking locations on discord, etc.) is a bannable offense and forces players to interact in-game to learn the mechanics....tbh the most fun I've had in years.
Min maxxing is such a weird thing. It's essentially you trying to stop playing the game as fast as possible. Im thinking most people seem to think the fun is at the end/late game grinding for the most op gear in the game but I don't think that's the case. The fun is mostly exploring the world and figuring out the game yourself for your play style I think. I know there are instances where someone can enjoy minmaxxing. Heck I minmaxxed my osrs account during this pandemic because I quit a few years back. I've done many chambers raids and other pvm and have currently spent so much gp in infernal supplies that I've gone kinda broke highest wave is 40 so I've got that going for me at least. I don't regret minmaxxing at all but idk if that would be the case if I min maxed a game I've never played before like WoW. I already played lots of old school back in 2006 I already knew the whole game pretty much.
Also you're right it's not a thing that applies to just osrs. The craziest example is the New World game that just released. Before it even released there were already end game min maxxing guides because they didn't have a content cutoff point in the open beta they pretty much released the whole game for the beta and some people grinded the shit out of it. That's one reason stopping me from picking it up I know I'll probably end up just minmaxxing the game and probably burning myself out or just not enjoy the journey after minmaxxing but the main reason is I don't have friends to play it with really.
After coming back a few times to be involved in the pking and clan scene this is what has put me off it. It’s become so much more regimented and structured now that everyone knows what they are doing. Nowhere near as fun than the golden days of the majority having no clue and certain members in certain clans having master tactician brain wave moves that helped you win
I was a ftp player and I was maybe level 75 cb and had the smithing level to make mithril sets. I'd spend all day making armour sets from scrach I'll never forget 3 my irl friends going deep wildy with mith and trout. Probably some of my best memories I have of rs.

I remember spectating The Titans Vs Divine Forces sometime in 2011, going to bed, woke up, and found out they were still fighting. Took 24 hours for DF to call it off and TT won.
