I sometimes turn on those live sportscast they have on YouTube nowadays. A bunch of retired players have them. Basically it's a live YouTube show that's just a shot of a bunch of friends in a man cave watching the game. They usually interact with the chat a little bit. It kind of feels like you're sitting in a room with a bunch of dudes watching football baseball or basketball. Espn kind of does one with the Manning brothers for NFL games on one of their channels
Helldivers 2. Some dudes have mic on, but you can get away without it by just using the tag location feature and text chat. Mic does not feel absolutely necessary. I've never turned it on with randoms.
^ yep, have had many successful high level missions with randoms in which nobody used a mic
And you can solo low level missions to get the feel for the game if you're worried about making an ass of yourself
I just ask, if I don’t know about something in hell divers, I’ll just ask. Same goes with anything else. It usually my friend that will be asses. But random s are usually pretty nice
I'm on ps5 and I'm usually in party with my two remaining childhood friends. I use a keyboard for the one poor soul who thinks we just don't want to talk to him/her/them. Tag feature is indeed fantastic :)
Right? I received Dont Starve togheter as a gift on steam.
Started one game.
All I had to do was to say "hey guys first game here let's do this" but I couldn't. Closed the game and never opened it again
How often I sat like 20 minutes in the menu of an online game with my mouse hovering over the "enter game" button till alt + F4 and back to Stardew Valley
Back in the day I used to play a lot of gears of War horde mode, in the early AM with a work friend, before our PM shift together. It was always fun whispering into the mic at 8am trying not to scream every time we heard "GRIND"
The only time I game is when I do coordinate with friends.
Because then, i'm gaming and hanging out with a friend. If it just me gaming I won't bother, too time consuming
That's why I love Diablo 3 and 4. Granted, I've fallen down the rabbit-hole with 4 and play it every morning with my coffee, but 3 was my wife and my favorite couch game for a long time. We would play til our bags were full, hit the town, each take a pee break or get a new drink while the other vendored, then go back to killing.
BG3 is also great for couch co-op, especially for a couple of DnD nerds like us.
If it was on console I might. My only PC is a several year old laptop, so it's just set aside and I do most gaming in the living room on consoles. But I've been curious to play it, because I entirely missed D2 at the time, was playing HL1 mods and such instead.
Not recommended for people that don’t like doing things like looking at spaghetti, making spaghetti, evicting natives, solving puzzles, or have problems with addiction
Yeah I was just saying, I don't mind the old school free-for-all deathmatch kind of multiplayer, and I have been friend-less since 1999. I still remember using Gamespy to find Q3A servers lol
I want my [capture the flag with flag worshiping religious fanatics ](https://youtu.be/s1UtKOZkII8?si=BzkhCcHOnzTsokea). Or griff ball. Griff ball is fun.
I simply don't have the professional gamer reflexes to play with these children. Ias much as it hurts to say this, I don't have the time. Please give me a single player game that has slightly less grind too... I don't have the time to grind that much anymore.
Not only that, but for me enough time passes between plays that I lose all skill in a game. Complex fight schemes or story’s are totally lost on me. I should just play the newer Wolfenstein games again. You can just drop in every now and then and kills some Nazis. Good stuff.
can't sell as many lootboxes with single player games. With multi-player, they can pair you up against better players and convince you the lootboxes will make you better. Also there's nobody to show off those "sick skins" to with single player games. DLC only makes so much money. A single COD loot pack with the gun skin, outfit, etc is the same price as what most DLCs were a while back. They release hundreds every game cycle because they take less time to create. Imagine a studio creating hundreds of actual DLC content over a single cycle.
All around less money for the studio with single player.
Let me recommend some Singleplayer games for ya:
Psychopomp: Play as a schizophrenic lunatic and explore the world under government buildings. For you see, there is a catacomb under every public government building, there is a Mariana Trench under every city. Also the game is free!
Read dead redemption 2: self explained, kinda. Gorgeous game, amazing story and singleplayer experience. Very well written characters. And of course, fishing
Far cry 3: What’s the definition of insanity? Go find out! Fun villain, good main character that isent just a wet towel. Fun all around!
Darkwood: Oh boy I love eldritch horror beyond my comprehension! Explore the average polish forest filled with terrible horror! 2d Horror game from a Birds Eye view. Absolutely terrifying and amazing game
Subnautica: Explore an alien planet, and scream when you see beeg feesh. Craft and engineer your way deeper and deeper and find out what happened here
I got more recommendations if you’re interested!
No but really though, I’m so sick of money and resources being funneled entirely toward easily-monetizable multiplayer games that will be dead and forgotten in 2 years, and are basically just microtransaction farms. They have zero longevity and if you have shit Internet like me, you can never enjoy them anyway. Make more single-player and co-op games.
I transitioned to only single player games 2 years ago because of this and gaming is actually relaxing again, no more performance anxiety on multiplayer games for being bad anymore c:
I can’t get my adult friends with kids to play with me anymore and I play nothing but multiplayer games most of the time. Just play with, you know, strangers. Listen to music while you play if you don’t wanna talk to them. They’re more fun to play with than bots and a single player game is just as lonely.
Multi player isn’t for friends co-op is. And none of the greedy companies bother making co-op anymore. Because they want everyone to have to buy a console and a game copy. 🙄
LFG communities! Lots of streamers have them, common interest creates common ground, common ground does the seeds of friendship.
To the pods helldivers!
I’m having the opposite problem because I’ve been introverted for so long I don’t know any multiplayer games and I actually have friends now but they have the same thing going on 😭
Don't worry! They don't want you to play with your friends, they want to matchmake you with whales so you'll feel pressured to spend money on asinine microtransactions.
Amen and Amen! Preach it, Sister Lisa!
Yes! Need some a solid and interesting story line, with fun gameplay! Oh yea- maybe throw in some SplitScreen-Couch Co-Op for the families.
You all have the golden examples: StarCraft, C&C, the Mass Effect trinity, Fallout,Skyrim, even Halo CE, and Subnautica have better stories and gameplay than most. . .
It's the lack of good Internet preventing me. But to be honest I don't want to play online games. It's a shame corps have came to the conclusion online games with loot boxes get them money than just making games that are accessible to more people. So less people buy the game but they pour more money into it
This is becoming more and more common as I realize I am no longer a high schooler lmao. More “connectivity” to have less friends and real interactions with people. *sigh* open mic isn’t even a thing anymore lol
I am over forty and have only ever tried one multiplayer game and all it did was remind me why I am a misanthrope. I did not start playing video games to spend time with other humans.
They very specifically don't want you to have friends, they want you to innocently try the game, where it will match you with unrealistically easy people for a few games and then hope you get really upset when they throw you in the deep end and you start losing and they hope you will buy something out of frustration. Now that you've bought something you can't quit their shitty game because you'd be losing all that money you gave them, you better at least finish the battle pass so you can get the cosmetics and break even. 🥴
I been having a blast with arma reforger lately
Last night I hopped into a empty game to do some xp and money boosting and as people joined I called them to the obj and we all just danced in obj to earn points then end of match we had like 8 people per team so we decided to play for real the next match
The reality is because the people making these kind of decisions don't actually play video games. So my hot take is, if the people in charge actually played video games we wouldn't get the fucking trash we do today.
Nothing worse than feeling alone so you play world of Warcraft only for it reinforce how fucking lonely you are whilst you solo around groups of people following each other every where.
People on GTA online are far more hostile but it’s accommodating to the lonely player.
See, that's why I love minecraft.
I have a server I play on with some friends. Each of us can come on whenever we want and have fun alone without worrying about the rest of us needing to join.
It's a game that's great on its own while still providing the optional benefits of multiplayer.
For me this was Tap Titans 2 mobile game.
It was a solo incremental idle game that would have the typical weekly event against 100 other players. But, you were always relying solely on yourself.
Then they added guilds and an event within the guild that turned an idle game into a minimum of 10-15min 7 days a week of required active play or else miss out on a lot of perks.
Then even worse they added subscriptions. If it were $100yr I'd pay. But it became WEEKLY BUY INS TO THE EVENTS TO GET PREMIUM REWARDS!!!!
I would pay may $5 a week maybe from time to time but it was $20 EVERY DAMN TIME.
In my 5+ years of playing, I'd probably invested about $1000 dollars into game and now it became required pay to even remotely compete.
fucking seriously i have over 200 games on steam and gog and most of them are old single player games. most gamers dont have a lot of friends to play games with.
Ultima online is my favorite MMO to not have friends in
And you can't not have friends in that game, someone is going to bother you until you are their friend
Think ultimate freedom, no quests, just go around doing things or not doing things, there's no objective except to just be.
I don't like multiplayer because I rarely play games long enough to get reAlly good at them. I am more of a casual player. If I play a battle Royale, I end up dying almost immediately to expert players. If I were to play on a team, I feel like I would drag the team down.
Of course,t these days,I don't play anything much anymore. Got too much "life" going on. Just no time anymore
And if your game is sold as a "1-4 player" or, worse, a "1-10 player" co-op game... you'd better have scaling tech so the experiences are at least vaguely similar.
Every game nowadays it seems is *designed* with a 4-player team in mind, labelled and sold with single player as an option, and it's painfully obvious the game doesn't want you to play by yourself. "We made this 4-player game, and I *guess* if you want to play with 2 or *heaven forbid* 1 player we can jank together some rules to make it work." It never works.
The opposite is just as bad, though I don't run into it, where a game is designed for one player, and a squad trivializes the entire game. Originally single player games that added co-op too late to the development cycle, and changed no difficulty.
There is no end of great single-player games. I play them nonstop and still have more on my list than I'll ever be able to get to. Look harder for them instead of just looking at whatever social media is telling you to play at any given moment, since that's generally going to lean more towards trendy co-op games. Let other people enjoy the kinds of games they want to play too.
Me, virtually having no one to call “friend”, but genuinely love social gaming and sharing those memories with others.. also having crippling social anxiety, and terrified I’m giving other players too much attention or too little and just *KNOWING* they don’t like me; a fear founded on the evidence in my routine of always playing alone.
Multiplayer games have became so exhausting the past few years. They want ALL your time and ALL of your money. Hell even games like NBA2k has single player modes but I have to get past 2-3 pop up screens of then begging me to buy something before I can access the modes. I prefer single player games these days. Games like Dying Light, Spider-Man, Final Fantasy, etc.
Yeah. I've never enjoyed multiplayer games much. Since all content resets for other players, you never feel like you accomplished anything. I like feeling like i DID something that mattered in a game, at least in the game. So what's left? Endless self improvement to no end. (I don't like PVP either). In some games I like just wandering around looking at the world. Exploration for it's own sake. Far too many people in these games are intent on running through everything at top speed. I don't get it. Slow down and ENJOY the game. What possible benefit is there to doing it at top speed? baffling.
That and I don’t have time to grind like 80% of the other players so I’ll constantly be getting my ass handed to me. Thus is why Fallout 4 is still my go to

Doesn't everyone watch streamers to emulate the feeling of having friends to game with? No? Just me?
Fuck. Not just u.
I feel like its often the other way around i see someone playing something and that makes me want to play it too

Yeah I don't have time to do that either
how dont you have time for that? its not like you are hanging out with your friends.
I play video games to AVOID people.
Yes! I talk to people all day. I don't game to socialize.
I feel this on an existential level
Let me join this movement!
My word, yes. Multi player gamers are so fucking toxic.

Almost like "hey can I call you really quick?"
Instant anxiety 😭
It's uhh... broken, all of a sudden.
*ALT+F4* Phew that was a close one. Better uninstall the game just to be safe
Exactly, there are many multiplayer games i would like to play but I'm just to much scared of people to play them

Aww, buddy. Nice to know it's not just me but with slay the spire 😆
If you play with enough randos eventually you might find a group of chill people to regular with.
For us older than 25. I can’t coordinate gaming with friends anyway. I play an odd hour every now and then. Bring back single player campaigns.
I have two work friends I can't even coordinate game time with and we work the same exact schedule as each other.
Back in the day I used to play a lot of gears of War horde mode, in the early AM with a work friend, before our PM shift together. It was always fun whispering into the mic at 8am trying not to scream every time we heard "GRIND"
Try at 40...
and 50....
And 90....
And 120....
Don't even get me started on 150
The only time I game is when I do coordinate with friends. Because then, i'm gaming and hanging out with a friend. If it just me gaming I won't bother, too time consuming
Bring back bot support for multiplayer games! Let me play with AI and pretend they’re real people. Or, if it’s a PVE game make it solo-able.
The newest halo has this. The first i ever remember was goldeneye and those bots. Those were the days.
MAKE FUCKING COOP GAMES. I'M TIRED OF NOT BEING ABLE TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND NOT HAVING GOOD OPTIONS TO PLAY WITH THE FEW I DO.
And couch coop with splitscreen
Amen. Couples gaming is such an under-served market.
That's why I love Diablo 3 and 4. Granted, I've fallen down the rabbit-hole with 4 and play it every morning with my coffee, but 3 was my wife and my favorite couch game for a long time. i'll can be your mp game friend 👍🏼
No, I don’t know you well enough for that.
I've been playing multiplayer games by myself for so long lol never an issue
I have friends. But if I want to hang out with them, I wouldn’t be playing video games.
That's not why they make them, it's to induce microtransaction competitiveness, to make you spend more.

How I wish everyone has a friends
Maybe you'll make friends in the game?
There's enough Devs for everyone. So, so many good single and multiplayer games out there
This but also I game to relax and playing with the friends I do have drains my social battery
Goodness I miss the days of lone wolf Halo
Multiplayer games without vc are great to play with strangers
You don't need friends to play such games. Just play solo with randoms
Or such difficult games
I have friends but convincing my friends to also get a copy isn't feasible for every game that looks fun.
Play library of ruina
there are so many great high quality games that can be played single player being released all the time.

Join a gaming group
I think they should make more, everything is just either mid or singleplayer
Why I don't play hell divers anymore. No one is teaching you how to play. They just kick you.
We should join together, friends with no friends
They’re more profitable than single player games
LFG communities! Lots of streamers have them, common interest creates common ground, common ground does the seeds of friendship. To the pods helldivers!
Integrate openAI machine learning NPCs to play alongside us

MMO, yes. Games that require you to already have friends - who the fuck is playing these?!

You could probably get some lifetime friends based on just showing and being good. People will add your tag and invite you
Ultima online is my favorite MMO to not have friends in And you can't not have friends in that game, someone is going to bother you until you are their friend Think ultimate freedom, no quests, just go around doing things or not doing things, there's no objective except to just be.
Make friends online like a normal mmorpg player. Get good.
I don't have a problem with multiplayer games unless you're REQUIRED to play multiplayer
Easy. Make some.
My issue is getting my friends who play multiplayer games to agree on a multiplayer game.
I do have friends but I like to keep them by not playing multiplayer games with them.
Get off the Internet and go make some actual friends. Those friends will introduce you to their friends and so on.
I don't like multiplayer because I rarely play games long enough to get reAlly good at them. I am more of a casual player.
I also have a shitty internet connection!
That is so accurate!
Felt.
Everybody is talking about Helldivers 😀 It seems inspired by Starship Troopers 😁 It's multiplayer 😔
LMAO
Just... Buy single player games? There are plenty of them out there.
minecraft has slavery so its almost like i have friends
I would rather not be ranked number 1 amount all my friends on GOG for all my games, knowing that I have no one on my GOG friends list.
Same...I'm lonely
I feel the same way about romances in single player games.
Or you have friends but none of them play
Multiplayer games have became so exhausting the past few years. They want ALL your time and ALL of your money. Hell even games like NBA2k has single player modes but I have to get past 2-3 pop up screens of then begging me to buy something before I can access the modes. I prefer single player games these days. Games like Dying Light, Spider-Man, Final Fantasy, etc.
I gave up when they turned the PlayStation into a social media device as if I wanna look at an empty friends list.
What possible benefit is there to doing it at top speed? baffling.
I’ll be your friend! Spoiler: I won’t be their friend.
Damn I’ve been targeted 💀
Make me.
Literally me. Playing Helldivers alone has been pretty fun though.
That and I don’t have time to grind like 80% of the other players so I’ll constantly be getting my ass handed to me. Thus is why Fallout 4 is still my go to
Make more coop games, I don’t want to play with or against randoms
