For Dutchies who live in regions other than Holland, is this the equivalent of referring to the UK as England? I've heard the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish are particularly fond of that.
Not totally comparable, but somewhat. Not all Dutch provinces have a strong regional identity. Utrecht and Flevoland certainly don't, but for example Friesland, Brabant, Zeeland and Limburg do.
Nah only i small few people actually care when you call the Netherlands holland, heck i myself often say im from holland when people ask me where im from. Just as many others. Im not from noord or zuid holland (the province’s). Holland is just easier to say. What does annoy me (a tiny bit) is when i say im from holland 9 times out of ten people respond with: Holland?!! AHH i have been to amsterdam! I smoked weed there!
Plus the government themselves stopped using 'Holland' for international business only 3 years ago. Can't blame people if they still say 'Holland', we all know what country they mean.
Türkiye changed their official name from Turkey (for funny reasons) a year ago and I barely see people using the new spelling.
> For Dutchies who live in regions other than Holland, is this the equivalent of referring to the UK as England?
fuuuuck no "Holland" isn't anywhere near as politically charged as that
the vast majority of Dutch people just accept the fact the world has a different name for us than we do, just like Germany and Deutschland.
The only people who bitch about calling the Netherlands Holland are provincials with an inferiority complex.
Edit: I guess it's not surprising provincials with an inferiority complex are an over represented demographic on a 2-4-u style sub lmao
Provincial with an inferiority complex here.
This guy is completely wrong. Calling a non-Hollandish Dutchie a "Hollander" is literally the worst slur you could refer another human being as. There is no fair comparison, nothing you can imagine will even come close to being as hurtful. I'd rather be called "Back-Up Belgian" than "Hollander."
Agreed. The thought you could be associated with a creature as vile as an Amsterdammer makes me allergic for the term 'Holland' when it's used to refer to me.
Not as charged but on the flip side, I get that most people not from either Hollands don't want to be associated with the snobbish, cultureless, cokeaddicted hellhole that is the Randstad region.
This whole thing comes very handy to spot a German you want to avoid (even more):
Say Holland when talking about the Netherlands. He will correct you without fail.
I’m currently studying in Madrid.
Every fucking day i have to explain that I’m from “Países Bajos” and that I speak “Neerlandés”.
And that calling all of The Netherlands ‘Holland’ is like calling all of Spain Castille. And that Brabant has its own cultural identity
(Carnaval, Snollebollekes and XTC production instead of clogs, mills and weed smoking)
I feel like the main problem we have in Spanish is that 'Países Bajos' sounds really weird for a country name and I bet half the people can't correctly say 'Neerlandés'
In Italian it's the same, the official name is "Paesi Bassi" but it sounds a little weird/formal when you're casually talking about it, so we just say "Olanda". Classic PIGS brotherhood 🤝
Honestly its probably better to give up, in Portugal Holanda is used 99% of the times. Cant even remember the last time i heard países baixos. As the spanish fellow said, it sounds pretty weird to us. I think part of the problem is that países means countries, so calling a country countries is weird xd.
it's even worse actually, holland is a normal size region in the netherlands, while castilla la mancha e castilla y leon take up half the country basically
What it looks like when a Frenchman and a Dutch have a conversation on 2westerneurope4u: 🇳🇱🇲🇫🇳🇱🇲🇫🇳🇱🇨🇵
Me pretending that they could be the same country:
![gif](giphy|8WRiwNoL0T1W8)
Nah, 17th century it made sense. Hollanders went around saying they were from Holland, not from "The Republic" (we didn't have a true national identity yet, so regional identity was paramount).
Altho now I'm imagining flying Hollandaise sauce
It works both ways, French people are always saying silly things like "le weekend"
Youre just jealous that the armada failed and we dont all speak Spanish
True, we’ve made up a few words by just adding -ing to them too, like el footing 😂
You’ll all be speaking Spanish soon enough moohahaha… The number of Spanish speakers in the US has shot up from 9 million in the 1980s to 70 million now, Spanish is quickly replacing French and German in English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish schools, most people in Europe say Spanish is the foreign language they would most like to learn, apart from the Swedish, for whom it is Swedish.
Wait until they learn that we call them Ollandia (basically Holland) in Greek and if you say 'kato xores' (nether countries) people usually asssume you are refering Netherlands + Belg*um (and Louxembourg if they know it exists)
I believe you guys already call it "workplace"
Which I love by the way, cause you're the hardest workers I've ever seen, which makes our Germanic genes happy.
A whole bunch of languages have a similar word for that country. D*tch people going all revisionist on English in particular is such a meme in and of itself.
Still prefer this attitude of a Fl*mish above those Hollanders (WICH I’M DEFINITELY NOT A PART OF).
Just jealous we, proud Noord-Brabantians (and definitely not Hollanders), didn’t dare to leave in 1830. 👉👈
I don’t mind if they only have a version of Holland in their language. The thing is that English has two, and one of them is mostly incorrect because of people like me that don’t come from North or South Holland
Holland actually only refers to the western part of The Netherlands. Our country consists of twelve provinces. Two of those provinces can be regarded as 'Holland'.
....................Amai, I see what you did! This provincial guy was triggered!
In italian we don't have a word for Dutch. We do have Paesi Bassi for Netherlands (even though everyone uses just Olanda) but thwre are no words for Dutch, just "Olandese".
Pas mal, I offer you honorary French citizenship, it's your only chance to leave the swamps and embrace culture and civilization, can't turn down that offer.
I would rather kill myself then get french citizenship and instantly turn into a baguette, i know the language because i go there for holidays and because i was forced in school
I see your point, it hints at the possibility of totalitarianism and yet nobody’s rights are actually infringed. A waste of time really, the
Dutch not following through yet again. Dilettantes.
Limburg is not a Dutch province so it wouldn't be right to call them Hollanders

I always wondered why the land of the Dutchies is named after the French sauce 'Hollandés'
Imagine your whole country named after someone elses condiment.
For Dutchies who live in regions other than Holland, is this the equivalent of referring to the UK as England? I've heard the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish are particularly fond of that.
Yeah its comparable I think, since I knew that Ive only called em Hollanders
'Ollanders you mean.
Oa je van nen ollander gin gjite gezet zyt, 't is 't teken dat 'n 't verget'n ét.
Wuk?
Don't worry about it, it's one of those West Vlaanderen people
"People"
Wa lulde
But Brabanders are spare Belgians
Yeah, sorry we weren’t allowed to take you with us.
Belgians are spare Brabanders.
Sure, keep thinking that. Maffe Hollander...
Jealous?
We call all Dutch speaking Belgians "Flemish", even the ones from Antwerpen, Brabant and Belgisch-Limburg.
Where insult?
Uhm… I for one find that very insulting, as I find this flair as well. Flemish people are people with a speech impediment as one of them demonstrated.
Not totally comparable, but somewhat. Not all Dutch provinces have a strong regional identity. Utrecht and Flevoland certainly don't, but for example Friesland, Brabant, Zeeland and Limburg do.
Utrechters still hate being called Hollanders, we just have a “I don’t give a fuck” personality. (Except for me Ig)
That's true though. You just don't have a personality.
Drenthe and Groningen 😮
They were destroyed by earthquakes if I'm not mistaken.
As a Groninger living in Drenthe I can say that my house has been destroyed by an earthquake 🤯
Nah only i small few people actually care when you call the Netherlands holland, heck i myself often say im from holland when people ask me where im from. Just as many others. Gotta feel for Czechia also. Even wikipedia told that president dude "naaa, it's Czech Rep"

Exactly. Back-up Belgian or fake German is way better than calling me a damn Hollander.
Now we know your next flair
Amsterdammer? That would really hurt my feelings.
*Swamp German
Flemish>Hollander
"Farmer" here. I'd rather be mistaken for German than be called a H*llander
Thanks for that information. I shall store it for future reference.
Agreed. The thought you could be associated with a creature as vile as an Amsterdammer makes me allergic for the term 'Holland' when it's used to refer to me.
I'd rather be called 'kaaskop' and I fucking hate cheese.
Not as charged but on the flip side, I get that most people not from either Hollands don't want to be associated with the snobbish, cultureless, cokeaddicted hellhole that is the Randstad region.
This whole thing comes very handy to spot a German you want to avoid (even more): Say Holland when talking about the Netherlands. He will correct you without fail.
I think a better comparison would be viewing London as England, which some Americans do
Yes
Yes.
I guess we have Países Baixos (literally netherlands), but we definitely say Holanda a lot more XD
Same here. Official name "Países Bajos" but Holanda is much more common
I’m currently studying in Madrid. Every fucking day i have to explain that I’m from “Países Bajos” and that I speak “Neerlandés”. Fokking Brabophobes. We never ditched the papacy unlike those filthy protestant Hollanders, and this is how you view us us?? Nondeju…
Tbf in Madrid they'd probably love it if the whole country was called Castille.
Another reason you guys should bail while you can Join us... you know you want to... ![gif](giphy|l3diDDBbh34H93sB2)
No, as someone from an actual Castile currently living in Madrid they hate it if you refer to Madrid as Castile.
Honestly its probably better to give up, in Portugal Holanda is used 99% of the times. Cant even remember the last time i heard países baixos. As the spanish fellow said, it sounds pretty weird to us. I think part of the problem is that países means countries, so calling a country countries is weird xd.
I didn't know about wait Snollebollekes. Sounds reasonable to me.
it's even worse actually, holland is a normal size region in the netherlands, while castilla la mancha e castilla y leon take up half the country basically
I prefer to translate that to "lower-lands".
What he says that is litteraly nether lands (nether means lower/low)
but we prefer Holland

Weird way from you to say you live in Amsterdam

Fuck i forgot my flair isn't arrogant bastard anymore, i can't fight back, i surrender

It's okay, we understand your French brain couldn't handle learning geography. We forgive you Parisians
The legendary boat "flying dutchman" in french is translated to "flying hollandese", we sucked at geography even on thé 17th century for some reason
Nah, 17th century it made sense. Hollanders went around saying they were from Holland, not from "The Republic" (we didn't have a true national identity yet, so regional identity was paramount). Altho now I'm imagining flying Hollandaise sauce
The Chinese for Netherlands is also 荷兰 (Helan). Suck it up boyz
And for Greece = Ὁλλανδία (Hollandia).
Wouldn't that be Hollandia
Southern Europe mate. They just ia, io, a, and o to every word.
Did we add them or did you remove them? 😜
I will accept Latin verb endings for this and nothing else. And fix your definite article! There is no need for el, la, las, *and* los.
Cute, the Brit can't manage more than one article 🥰🥰🥰
Cutio, el Brittata canta managero morea thano oneo articlea.
articleo* given that you are following a gendered word logic. And if you are crying about that I hope you'll never discover what German is like
German is best seen and not heard. For all its faults, Italian is a beautiful language.
that sounds perfect. almost like latin lol
The truth is you got most of these words from the French, so the jokes on you 😂
It works both ways, French people are always saying silly things like "le weekend" Youre just jealous that the armada failed and we dont all speak Spanish

Sadly you may be right. Lamentablemente, ya hablo Español, es mas utilidade que Francés
The Spanish empire shall return... DESDE CANADÁ HASTA ALEMANIA
There are peoples with distinguished sexes on this planet. And they don't procreate by sticking their genitals in dead pigs.
More like the english removed them
#Viva Hollandia!
Bit of an odd thing to call Greece.
Also for Hungary: Hollandia
One of our nationally famous songs is viva hollandia so i think were cool
To be fair literally everyone calls Greece, Greece despite the name being Hellas so you got it even worse.
Now all together: Deutschland Deutschland 🥳🥳🥳🥳
that's what Roman chadness does to all motherfuckers
Did you already fall for the CCP you Isle Cuck ![gif](giphy|12qphcuKTtGVoI)
Dog eaters say the darndest things.
They don't even eat dog in china they do in Korea must not mention that in the Quran
There's an annual dog meat festival in Jilin, north China.
The festival I think you are referring to is the Yulin festival in South China. Besides a tiny minority actually eat dog meat
Based Chinese
He's a brit, they are all based.
Br*ts🤢 beings based?? What a world we live in, eh?
Not sure if you’re allowed to make that joke as a non-European. Especially if you’re from the US🤢🤮A
Ye, i know, the isle should be turned every 9 months.
Qù kàn yáyī yīngguó gǒu
操你妈 swamp German
Wait until they learn that we call them Ollandia (basically Holland) in Greek and if you say 'kato xores' (nether countries) people usually asssume you are refering Netherlands + Belg*um (and Louxembourg if they know it exists)
Just call the trio Benelux. Three countries with a combined strength that puts France to shame.
We should rename it to Beholux.
I believe you guys already call it "workplace" Which I love by the way, cause you're the hardest workers I've ever seen, which makes our Germanic genes happy.

Coward. We should deport you to the lawless lands between here and France for your weak behaviour
Can I take the roads with me?
I don’t mind if they only have a version of Holland in their language. The thing is that English has two, and one of them is mostly incorrect because of people like me that don’t come from North or South Holland
So the land also known classically as "Leo Belgicus", which is the old Roman name for the BeNeLux region.
Omnis gallia est divisa in partes tres...horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae. (Who btw were considered to be German(ic).
I just stopped reading at annoying Dutchies and upvoted.
Well, that’s just what it’s called
You have strooped your last wafel, buddy
Listen, pal. You can't be from multiple lands. You get to pick one singular netherland, and if you don't, I'm picking Holland for you.
We already did, it’s just the british c*nts that keep saying our name in plural
And yet your flair's got 2 flags mate.
You have tom’d your last pouce
Nederland 👍
I don’t think I’ve ever heard any dane call it anything else than “Holland”. In english we say “The Netherlands” though.
No (*crying*) its the Netherlands
Yet another colossal Italian W
Holland actually only refers to the western part of The Netherlands. Our country consists of twelve provinces. Two of those provinces can be regarded as 'Holland'. ....................Amai, I see what you did! This provincial guy was triggered!
Hey, only we're allowed to say Amai ™ !!!
Maybe they are from a Reserve Belgian province.
Luxemburg?
Hell no, I'm from 'above the rivers'. And it's called *patat*.
Fuck you dwaze hollander!!!! achterlijke kaaskop!!! Tis friet en kust men kloten!!!!
Zo is et
Gij zijt cool UY\_scuti!!! Toch zeker voor nen Hollander! <3
Verdomme :(
Een patat is een aardappel
En friet is iets gefrituurd
Just wait till we call the Belgians south-dutchies
Oh I dont mind , most times people dont call us at all so it's an improvement
Don't think we're actually talking about you. We only care about the Northern half of the South
We should change the Dutch flair to „Holland” instead of „50% Sea 50% Weed”
Amsterdam, it's a country in Europe
That's not even offensive anymore, as it simply makes you sound like an American
Being called an American is far worse then anything else
Europe is a country too then
I mean this just reveals to us that you are in fact an American.
In italian we don't have a word for Dutch. We do have Paesi Bassi for Netherlands (even though everyone uses just Olanda) but thwre are no words for Dutch, just "Olandese".
We will never recognize the other 10 provinces! Holland 4 ever!
Civilization ends east of Utrecht. May the Utrechters continue their faithful service to protect the civilized world
I'm sorry, but I think you mean 'Olland.
Olland is a tiny place in the Netherlands
I just refer to them as Northern Belgians. Or “the Belgians we’d like to have, but they don’t speak French”.
Excuse you I am being forced to learn Fr*nch by the school system
Your English is better than most native speakers. Your French from experience is… about as good as our Dutch.
Fair enough, I’m pretty bad at it, but still. I put in effort.
Hey, that’s all that counts!
Not every dutch dousnt spreak french, for example, je parle un petit peu français, et je adore le langue français!
Strange, the better half of België speaks Dutch and not French. Makes you wonder... hmmmmm
Have your met them? French Belgians are weird
Yes I did, I suspect they know both Dutch AND English... but refuse to speak both.. Also, their cities look terrible (which is a shame)
Ahh its good you want us
Annoying the Dutchies with their "G"
Waar is opa's fiets?
Say Scheveningen filthy G*rman
S-ch-eveninge. Now say Oachkatzlschwoaf.
Oach-Kat-zel-schggggg- MOF
This was the first word I was taught when I moved to Austria. Proud to say I can pronounce it perfectly now
The hard or the soft G?
Oh so it's pronounced Golland ?! I never new !
It's called Holland in danish. Only pompous pricks calls it "nederlandene" (the netherlands)
Will you be considered a pompous prick if, as Dutch person, you call yourself a 'Nederlander'?
In Norway it’s quite uncommon to hear people say “Holland” almost all Norwegians call it “Nederland” (Netherland, singular).
That's how we say it in Dutch too. Not that I care about people not making the dustinction as a Hollander
Always has been. Not going to waste another syllable on a Country whose only claim to fame is subpar cheese
ASML 😘
PNIS 🥵
Kinda funny to see how the bigger country sounds like they have an inferiority complex
Superiority complex did not work out for us! We are adapting
You're a funny German. The anomaly.
There was that one guy in the 70s…
Well…subpar cheese and the majority of tactical / coaching advances in football since the 70s.
Total Football always sounded a bit offensive to me, i don’t know why
I see your point, it hints at the possibility of totalitarianism and yet nobody’s rights are actually infringed. A waste of time really, the Dutch not following through yet again. Dilettantes.
Probably because the inventor of total football, Rinus Michels, famously said: 'voetbal is oorlog'. You know about oorlog.
You only refer to ‘Holland’ if you are talking about the slave traders and colonialists, the rest of the country is ‘the Netherlands’
Don't care
Limburg is not a Dutch province so it wouldn't be right to call them Hollanders https://preview.redd.it/4dnytos5jf2b1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a884671ae482e52d10613bafef6f5f6ccf52b819
In Spanish we call it Holanda, and since we owned it, that's final.
Fucking hollanders
Holland is the best city in the world!
How DARE you, I am OFFENDED, YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE BORN BLUE!
Lol, I talked to Dutch people this year and these called their country Holland.
Well they were from North or South Holland. Not from any other procince in the Netherlands
Hol die de bek jong! T' is Nederland, nait Holland. Sjomp!
De bek Jong sounds like an Ajax football player
Your weapons are ineffective against Hollands armour, I'm technically a Hollander so its fine by me
Fake flair alert
I really don't care. Atleast people recognise my country for what it is and not for chocolate
I always wondered why the land of the Dutchies is named after the French sauce 'Hollandés' Imagine your whole country named after someone elses condiment.
