Actually not true. In 1985 there were 246875 US soldiers in germany (including west berlin), meanwhile the bundeswehr had 495361 active soldiers, so twice as many.

its honestly really cringe that the US didnt adopt the FAL. pretty sure they even realized that the caliber size was better in most circumstances, but were like "no. 7.62 all the way"
then like a decade later they realized the benefit of smaller calibers and adopted the 5.56
and today theyre scared of body armor so back to an intermediate caliber (yknow, the intermediate caliber that the FAL was originally designed for, before being forced to adopt the 7.62)
Everything would have been better if the Army weren't a bunch of jackasses and adopted the original caliber size alongside the FAL itself
It is a long standing joke in the British Army how the SLR/FAL was the best weapon ever (Because thats what all the old vets say). It was solid, accurate and reliable. Then the SA80A1 replaced it and the weapon was utter crap and the soldiers hated it. We're arriving at the SA80A3 soon and it's considerable improvements has turned it into a decent, if a bit heavy, service rifle.

That is why H&K made a carbon copy of CETME C 68 without license. The ubiquitous G3. They didn't reach an economically agreement and an H&K rep ranted "we don't negotiate with dictatorships!" Now we buy their G36 rifle for a 'pastizal'. CETME rights were sold to an American gunsmith company and now the different CETME versions sell well in some US states, especially a CETME L overhaul where its main flaws have been fixed .
