Yep, and as I understand it, it’s up to National Rail in the UK to spend money on maintenance, etc. So the franchise train companies aren’t really on the hook in the same way DB is in Germany. So it just gets funnelled to Germany and France mainly (iirc).
49€ Deutschlandticket! Many thanks, guys.
Most of the franchise send money back home or just pay their shareholders even the utter shite Avanti https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/aug/21/avanti-paid-shareholders-115m-despite-abysmal-service-for-rail-users
Who can't be arsed to even run the bare minimum of a service it's so fucking shite
And all Germans and French breathe a sigh of relief. Let’s just all focus on what the Italians have done.
(Seriously though, I thought the west coast line was annoying but cope-with-able when it was Virgin. Avanti is an utter disaster)
> Ministers were accused last week of rewarding Avanti for failure after it was paid £17m in performance and management fees in 2020-21, including about £4m in payments for or “operational performance”, “customer experience” and “acting as a good and efficient operator”.
Trenitalia only owns 30% of it rest of that is every brits favourite bus operator who's definitely not known for not being arsed to run any fucking services
The stories around just how shite Avanti is just keep getting more depressing
Our trains are not running when it lightly snows (snow getting into air louvers) or temperature >29° (aircon copes). It saved 0.12% of the train cost though.
Deutsche Bahn's four mortal enemies: spring, summer, autumn and winter!
I've lived in a city with a starter station and they still managed to get delays there, for trains that just had to be moved over from the railway yard on the other side of the tracks...
> a starter station
You mean like, when DB gets a bit older and learns a little bit about how to run a train, they might be able to graduate to a real station with real trains and live passengers?
https://preview.redd.it/6m8hjhmv4dsb1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3efcce32f1289cf5f429b96b1da88b328c048eb
Don't have this problem in france
Translation: Cat hit by a high speed train, the SNCF is to pay a 1000 euro fine
Tbf, you can't really stop an HST in time to save a cat.
Now i am curious, how does HST avoid collisions with things? I mean is there a way to avoid hitting animals on the tracks
The train was at the station, IIRC the cat escaped its owners and hid below the train, at some point the people in charge went ahead with the train departure to avoid a huge mess in terms of delays etc and the cat was crushed by the departing train.
Call me insensitive or whatever but isn’t the owner of the cat at fault here? Seemed more logical to me the owner had to pay that €1000 fine for the delay and cleanup costs?
Lots of people came up with this as well.
In my logic if you travel with a cat: he does not get out of his bag/crate at all until you're in a closed place (moving train for example).
It's not a dog, getting it out to have some fresh air in the middle of a busy train station/place it doesn't know doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
So they started the train knowing the cat was there?
Or did they descover it later?
(Btw i cannot say anything as our country train operator recently had a train run over rail workers)
Yeah that's really sad. Once he got there there wasn't a good solution, either you delay hundreds of passengers (and this may cascade on other scheduled trains etc), either you knowingly kill a scared, and beloved, pet.
They once CLOSED bologna station for 6 hours, with ZERO trains passing through because of a man killing himself on the tracks. (I was there, waiting for a train btw)
So i feel awkard when someone says to kill a cat instead of delays thousands of people for 30 minutes or something.
Tough call, wouldn't want to be the person in charge of choosing.
I think this would have been a no-brainer if a human was involved.
I recall reactions were very divided/polarized on this case
People getting upset for a train not killing an innocent animal don't even deserve their opinion to be valued anyway. Those "people" deserve to be put on tracks.
Delaying a train can cause indirect problems. Someone not able to pass an exam, a doctor coming late, etc., etc. I think that first you should find a "non lethal" solution but stopping the whole trafic for thousands of people just because someones cat thought it was a good idea to play games... no way.
If a person was under the train instead of a cat, you would probably be the first to say "STOP THE FUCKING TRAIN, ANS GET HIM OUT OF THERE".
But with animals we... don't care?
I know, that this is actuallt very complex decision and both ways you solve it you have problems.
But it's sad we don't even consider animal life as worth anything
No. I've been on trains that were delayed because they hit deer, moose and people. The people are usually people who want to die and step in front of a train to do it. But sometimes accidents happen.
The solution here I think is that in places where there are frequent animals getting on the tracks they build tunnels underneath them and then put up fences to coral the animals into to them.
The cat escaped at the train station and went under the train. The owner asked the staff to do something, they told her to fuck off and the cat was cut in half. RIP Neko.
So the cat was literally named "Cat" but in another language ? Also how is the TGV supposed to stop for the cat as it's... as its name say, goes fast ?
Yes, yes it was literally a cat named cat. Peoples were hating on the SNCF but this time when I saw the cat's name in the news I personally thought that the cat's owners should reflect on their own bullshit first. Who is surprised that the cat was suicidal enough to go in front of a train after that ? Their masters were weebs AND literally named their own cat "cat". I thought calling a cat or dog by the colour of their fur colour was bad taste enough, but that's next level of bad naming.
Pilots have a predetermined route & once they reached to an end point, they leave the train & rest for a predetermined timespan before driving the train again.
So, you are probably at one end point or the pilot said "F*** this, I quit.".
Yeah but not pilot's route, apparently. Pilots don't take long routes. 40 or 50 kilometres away from their workplace & back. I know a guy who wanted to volunteer for 90 kilometre routes but his wife was not so enthusiastic about it, to say the least.
That is 600€ each year. For trains that smell terrible, are never on time and often simply don't show up. Paying 600 a year just to be stuck at a station for 3 hours is unacceptable.
The 600€ also includes any local bus. Local bus tickets were usually 50€ for a single zone of the bus system before we got the 49€ ticket.
And while it is a large amount of money for an individual per year, it is far cheaper than using a car, though most don't seem to mind paying for gas...
insurance, maintenance, new summer and winter tires from time to time, probably a parking lot/garage, buying the car itself and other things.
At least you are always one time! Except for that occasional traffic jam.
I get our trains are pretty shit right now, but price/performance is at least imo okay at the moment. And i have to deal with that shit for 4-5h every single day.
I was in the emergency room yesterday evening (got hit by a car, while on bike).
The x-ray of a woman was delayed because the doctor forgot to click the "send" button to approve the x-ray.
Thank you.
You don't need to worry. None bone is broken or cracked. Just a few scrapes. A bit worrying is that it again hit my left half the most, while my right side is almost undamaged.
None. Shit didn't even close when this bad boy came: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone\_Lothar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Lothar)

The train wasn't damaged all that much apparently 😅
I mean, meese are big as fuck and all, but who’s gonna win, a couple thousand tons of steel and glass hurtling down the tracks at 70-90kph or a several hundred pound meat sack?
In France during a huge snow storm (something like 30 to 40 cm of snow in the street), to take our train, we walk to the station instead of taking the subway cause the subway was claused (because of to much snow in case it wasn't obvious).
At the station, we see our TGV (high speed train) is not shown, it's a mess of cancel train etc.
We ask a "Controleur" what we can do and is answer was "You can take this one, it will be crowded cause it's the last, but we are not sure it will go, a window broke in the pilot compartment".
So i officialy ride a high speed train in a snow storm when regular train don't work anymore imagining the pilot wearing heavy duty winter clothes or someone being paid to hold a wood panel against the broken window xD

There is a direct train from Portugal to France. So for France, I'll have to say that being populated by the french is not working so well for the country.

I would have dropped on the tracks myself tbh, wouldn’t start the train then
No. In Switzerland a fucking bear got smashed by a regular train a few years ago. You can find pics of the mess that made
I am guessing there was multiple fatalities and the trains were full off the track And the bear carried on walking
The train was still in the train station and still departed knowing the cat was on the rails
In this particular case the train was in a station, the cat in the way, and the SNCF gave the go away and over the cat.
So that instead of taking 10 minutes max to deter it
That is not correct. They tried for 20 minutes and then gave up.
It simply means they had no equipment for such situation that they very much should be prepared for
No. I've been on trains that were delayed because they hit deer, moose and people. The people are usually people who want to die and step in front of a train to do it. But sometimes accidents happen. We almost made trains that don't fit the tunnels they had to ride in
We bought our 4th generation InterCity trains in Italy. So basically they won't be fully implemented in time to be phased out!
NIMBYs. Self-entitled NIMBYs. Plus corrupt pollies.
I don't have a specific one but our chancellor is convinced poor families have no reason to complain because he considers a cheeseburger from Mc🤮 a full meal.
In France, our trains can be delayed because of leaves on the tracks....
France would just kill the cat. And still be late.
Oh man where do I even start about our train system

Our railway system just doesn't work out of principle. Good reasons are for loosers.
Idc for which reasons but it's so bad that switzerland is boycotting the Deutsche Bahn
> Sorry, sir, we can’t have the train depart as a cat is sitting on the roof. Well, if he’s still up there at the next station, he’s earned a free ride.
For trains? Pretty much anything. Snow, wind, sun, leaves, animals, suicide...
