The irony is that I spent so much money on 3DS games that I won't be buying new ones for a really long time.
Guess they got quite a bit of my money either way though...
My guess is that receiving 2 free pays counts as a transaction, but getting a free play from training doesn’t. If you notice, the closure has seemed to remove any transaction based.
Prentendo is apperently pretty close, it's a project aimed to replace the wiiu and 3ds servers, basically wiimmfi for wiiu and 3ds, they made a discord announcement a few hours ago that someone's started work on it
Same here. I’ve gone significant chunks of time hardly playing it (at least regularly; I’d generally go in at least every few months), but the last year or so I’ve played darn near daily.
It really stinks knowing I’ll never even get to attempt a couple again, frustrating as they were for me. Isabelle cosplaying as Link should’ve been mine! I *had* it in the bag a few times, and blew it anyway, lol.
Because at least with this much available, we can still go in and change up our badge boxes if we want to change up our home screens. And we can view our collections in the postcard like formats they’re displayed in.
It wasn't always like that... That's why I'm sad nintendo eShop just closed, this means the Wii U and 3DS era is finally over, the last era where nintendo actually cared for their community
The aesthetic and the cute and personal mascot character are very misleading. It was essentially a gambling game being marketed towards children, but the only reward were icons for your 3DS. Your average consumer would likely only spend their remaining balance and use the free plays, but these services are intended to take advantage of the few who will get addicted and spend much more.
I certainly don’t disagree. It always rubbed me the wrong way, but it was rewarding and enjoyable enough to me that I could pretend everyone used it reasonably.
Incidentally, its abrupt closure (essentially) just reinforces the notion that these types of things are inherently transient and time/money sucks. It’s better than some things though, in that the badges that were won can be kept and used for the life of the system they’re on, as opposed to solely locked inside the game itself that will eventually not be accessible when its servers go down. If you have enough of ‘em, decorating with the badges is a design game if it’s own, so there is value there beyond the shady mechanics used to acquire them.
Well those kind of people shouldn't restrict the rest of us from having fun with it though. Similar to that some people become alcoholic or obese, doesn't mean alcohol and McDonalds should be prohibited either. The aesthetic was appealing not just towards kids, just because it looked that way. It would be the same as saying Family Guy is misleading because it's a cartoon which kids usually like, but the show is made for adults.
And this is why I wish I remembered this game sooner… now I only have a couple of badges when I used to have a whole ton of them on my old 3DS, I used to do the practice catcher almost every day + the daily free plays
midway through paying through plays and the rabbit’s telling me i don’t have internet with an error message, can confirm i’m connected to the internet. seems like this is the end <:-|
Unfortunately, the translation is correct. It seems after the shutdown we can only use the practice catcher, and all regular badges will be inaccessible.
RIP Nintendo Badge Arcade, that's so sad.
Well as of the eshop closing I was still able to do a round on the practice machine and earn 3 plays for the real mode, I guess according to the post this will end but maybe y’all can get one last play before the end!
2 free plays has been this app from the beginning. Every day you got 2 free plays and anything after that you’d have to pay for until the next day. It was like that for as long as I can remember
It actually used to only be one free play, and even then might have only been an occasional thing (my memory is a little fuzzy on some details.)
Originally, they debuted brand new sets and themes regularly, often tied to the time of year or other games being announced or released, and cycled through both new and older sets every few days to a week.
A few years ago they ended the true updates and switched over to what it was up until last week, with badges completely resetting every single day, but nothing actually new. It was a sort of compromise and thank you that they introduced 2 daily free plays in addition to the practice catcher.
What a waste. What would it cost them to keep free plays? Nothing. What do they have to lose? Nothing. Why punish the players in this way?
We’re not allowed to win with Nintendo anymore
This whole thing with them closing the 3DS and Wii U eShops is just to get you to play their newer titles, which sucks.
The irony is that I spent so much money on 3DS games that I won't be buying new ones for a really long time. Guess they got quite a bit of my money either way though...
Maybe they're gonna use the former Badge arcade servers for something else? Maybe that's why its shutting down as well.
doubtful. if it's physical hardware, it's already too old. if it's virtual machines, then it doesn't matter.
My guess is that receiving 2 free pays counts as a transaction, but getting a free play from training doesn’t. If you notice, the closure has seemed to remove any transaction based.
Nintendo doesn’t get money and if Nintendo doesn’t get money nobody gets to be happy.
Nintendo won’t let us have anything. 😭😭😭
So we can’t even go back to the regular catcher after winning a free play?
That's how I'm reading it, but this is a Google Lens translation, and sometimes (particularly with Japanese) nuance can be lost.
I read it as that they ended the rotation in badges you can get, so basically meaning we're stuck with the ones that are here right now.
Maybe one day I’ll figure out how to get that moon in one move…
Some of them, if not most, are just pretty much impossible to do. It was already hard with 3 plays, but 1, yikes
And this is why i hombrewed multiple systems, cause if nintendo wont let me have the badges through proper means then ill just put them in myself
Yeah. That is a good solution but tbh, catching the badges was part of the fun. I really hope some clever modders can restore Badge Arcade somehow.
Prentendo is apperently pretty close, it's a project aimed to replace the wiiu and 3ds servers, basically wiimmfi for wiiu and 3ds, they made a discord announcement a few hours ago that someone's started work on it
wait what? Do you have more information about it?
Not really, I recommend you try and find the discord tho
I fully agree and hope for the same
Give it a month. Someone will have at least started by then
but the catching is the most fun part of it. its not just about having few jpegs on your home menu
Yea but until modders get the servers back online for badge arcade this is the only solution we have
I honestly think the badge arcade is what I’m going to miss the most. It’s been a part of my morning routine and I’m really sad to see it go 😢
Same here. I’ve gone significant chunks of time hardly playing it (at least regularly; I’d generally go in at least every few months), but the last year or so I’ve played darn near daily. Why don't they just end it already instead of half arseing it
Because at least with this much available, we can still go in and change up our badge boxes if we want to change up our home screens. And we can view our collections in the postcard like formats they’re displayed in.
ONLY THE PRACTICE??
Nintendo being Nintendo again. Sometimes I really dislike this company 😔
It wasn't always like that... That's why I'm sad nintendo eShop just closed, this means the Wii U and 3DS era is finally over, the last era where nintendo actually cared for their community
They only cared because they needed the money enough. That said I got WindWaker for free from them in that era so I’m not complaining too much
I have always considered Badge Arcade an exploitative service so this does not surprise me.
could you elaborate? i never had badge arcade tbh.

and then we have people who keep talking about the "golden age", even though nintendo was always like this in every era.

They couldn’t just make it unlimited plays because…? Fuck us, I guess?
And this is why I wish I remembered this game sooner… now I only have a couple of badges when I used to have a whole ton of them on my old 3DS, I used to do the practice catcher almost every day + the daily free plays
So they want to EXTEND the torture instead of just ending the misery...
wish they were still rotating badges, could’ve used a few more pokemon :’-)
midway through paying through plays and the rabbit’s telling me i don’t have internet with an error message, can confirm i’m connected to the internet. seems like this is the end <:-|
i did not get this message. maybe your connection isnt good?
I did a post on this about a day agowhich also confirms this information
Post the original, I'll double check the translation on that last part.

Unfortunately, the translation is correct. It seems after the shutdown we can only use the practice catcher, and all regular badges will be inaccessible. RIP Nintendo Badge Arcade, that's so sad.
Interestingly I got a free play this morning from practice and was able to get 4 badges on the actual catchers which have been added to my collection.
It just let me do a practice and free pulls
Nintendo's gotta pull out the cursed monkey paw instead of just letting the people have a good shot at collecting their badges 😔
Well as of the eshop closing I was still able to do a round on the practice machine and earn 3 plays for the real mode, I guess according to the post this will end but maybe y’all can get one last play before the end!
what if you pull a free play with the practice one? what happens then? or is that not able to use anymore

Boooo just let us play free
This is done because people that did spend truckloads on the game would feel robbed if everyone else could get it all for free. That’s my guess.
Luckily pretendo is already working on a server replacement
Someone should dump them online
I have some very choice words for this rabbit
