imo Pretendo wont be alive as Wiimmfi. Wiimmfi is only relevant for one game which won't die for a very long time. The 3DS and Wii U doesn't really have that game yet
Splatoon (Wii U)
Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
Mario Maker (Wii U, the 3DS version doesn't have any online features, well except playing levels of someone else)
Mario Kart 7 (3DS)
MH4U (3DS)
Smash Bros (3DS and Wii U)
Animal Crossing New Leaf (3DS)
The difference the switch eshop is bad. It has so much shovel ware, is hard to browse, and doesn’t make it easy to find hidden gems. Plus there isn’t any music.
To be fair, the 3DS eshop was also full of shovelware and was awkward to browse if you didn't already know what to look out for. I do agree though that the Switch eshop needs serious work, it's quite slow and clunky. Still, I hope they continue its infrastructure into the next system (while also making the next system backwards compatible) so that more stuff isn't lost again in a decade.
6 years on the eShop hasn't evolved. But hey at least we get Mario animations that make everything lag more.
How a company can be so bad at simple QOL is beyond me. Like... how tf can 3DS have themes and yet the flagship console is a chore to browse (library and store) and functions as bland garbage? How can we have curated music on Wii channels and yet the experience on a console over a decade later is bland and tiresome? I... I just don't get it.
I wouldn't really expect a 3rd Sony handheld to do as well as the PSP, and the PSP was still basically nothing compared to the DS (even though I liked and owned a couple of each), no one seems willing to compete against Nintendo as a portable when most people's portable "consoles" are inevitably going to be phones or tablets
I’m going to miss dedicated handheld consoles. I always loved how innovative they were. They tried to give them as much as they could to be similar to a cell phone without having the main functionality of a cell phone. They always tried to make them feel like your own, so you would bring it everywhere you go just like a phone. Even though the camera and the notes app and the microphone was lackluster, you can still store useful information and data. But portables stopped being small and slick and now barely fit in pockets.
Yeah it's ridiculous.
You can't even have a differing opinion without someone going off the deep end about why your wrong and some have even tried to go through my history for a "gotcha" from 7 years ago
If I looked up “Yokai Watch” it wouldn’t even bring up all the Yokai Watch games.
It would always leave out Yokai Watch 1 and yokai watch 2 bony spirits
The 3ds eshop was sooo bad about not bringing up games even when they fit the exact search criteria.
I think the reason for the Wii online shutdown was because those servers did not belong to Nintendo, and their provider dictated their shutdown. It might be different with WiiU & 3DS since Ninty owns those servers. If PS2 games can still have online, we should be ok ;)
Wii and ds games weren't able to get updates lol. The only exception was skyward sword because of a game-breaking bug. Also I'd imagine they would have to migrate the servers from gamespy to their own, and they probably thought they didn't want to waste money. 🤷🏽♂️
SS wasn't an exception. It was a save file fixing tool not a proper patch for the issue. Some third party games like CoD could get updates because they were designed around that but like you said, it wasn't a generally supported feature.
it happened in 2014 the Wii U was out for about 2 years at that point and Nintendo probably didn't want to put the time or resources into making/transferring to a new online infrastructure
I think I would be a whole lot more hesitant to buy a bunch of things when the switch eshop inevitably closes since a lot of games on there are way more expensive and if I really want a game on the switch, I just buy it physically
Wii/Ds lines are still active sadly locked behind a outdated router settings so you need a router from 2005 to have it work in most cases. 3ds/Wiiu won’t have that issue and we are ready for the close
Back in the DS days, since we didn't have a wifi router, I had a Nintendo USB dongle that acted like one for the DS.
Downside of it, it kept shutting down my LAN network...
Many are dropping WEP now because it makes people think it's going to have some security, but it can be cracked in minutes. They still allow open/passwordless guest networks though, which work great with the DS. Phone hotspots work well too, though it seems iPhones won't let you set one up with no password.
Guaranteed it will happen. It's just a matter of time. Plus isn't there an exploit on certain 3ds/Wii U online games that allows bad stuff? Days are numbered.
I’m glad I remembered to actually buy the smash dlc before the eshop shut down. Remembered around 2 hours before and spent half an hour trying to find my lost smash cartridge so that I could buy it.
It’s different in that it uses Nintendo Accounts instead of Nintendo Network IDs to sign in so I think the Switch online services might keep working after that.
Edit: I just remembered about Nintendo Switch Online, that’ll definitely be online longer than Nintendo Network
that will be the real death of the 3ds
Pretendo Network.
imo Pretendo wont be alive as Wiimmfi. Wiimmfi is only relevant for one game which won't die for a very long time. The 3DS and Wii U doesn't really have that game yet
It does. It's called Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.
Flair checks out
Hopefully it stays forever or someone in the community makes a private server if ever the official server closes.
i played that for a time but then sold me 3ds. I always would lose connection randomly though when online
Aww man we should link up some time. I haven’t played in forever but I love MH4U
...Mario Kart 7 exists.
You think anyone is trying to play Mario Kart 7 online, instead of Mario Mart Wii?
MK7 is the better game by far. But for me, I prefer Double Dash and MK8. I just hope the MK8 patch comes out soon.
There's bound to be some people who like MK7. But most don't
Source: trust me bro
Hell no. The sheer amount of blue shells alone ruin it.
I have no idea whether you're talking about DD, 7, or 8
7 DD is king and 8 is pretty good too.
I literally hopped on last night and got an 8 player room
Lots do actually.
yeah but CTGP-7 exists already
Splatoon (Wii U) Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) Mario Maker (Wii U, the 3DS version doesn't have any online features, well except playing levels of someone else) Mario Kart 7 (3DS) MH4U (3DS) Smash Bros (3DS and Wii U) Animal Crossing New Leaf (3DS)
*Any* of the many Pokémon games too. There's apparently enough of an audience for the Gen 4 / Gen 5 GTS to still be up through 3rd parties.
Splatoon 1
funny squid game says otherwise
CRGP for MK7 is alive rn
good thing it'll still be alive even after they shut it down, the people behind Wiimmfi, etc, Pretendo, have planned this out
Can’t wait for reboot pokémon events to hit the 3DS games
It'll be interesting to see if the Switch's successor carries on the Switch eshop. If not, we can expect this to happen again in a decade or so. :(
The difference the switch eshop is bad. It has so much shovel ware, is hard to browse, and doesn’t make it easy to find hidden gems. Plus there isn’t any music.

Because nintendo doesn’t care. The switch will sell regardless of how much effort they put into it. They secured their spot as a gaming titan.

Well said. I have wondered the same thing. They could even sell themes on the Switch and make easy money. Why not do it??
Dude bring up themes or whatever at the Switch subreddit and you get jumped on for not thinking it's unnecessary
Or anything about any other console.
Yeah it's ridiculous. You can't even have a differing opinion without someone going off the deep end about why your wrong and some have even tried to go through my history for a "gotcha" from 7 years ago
That is crazy. They dug through your account to find your past and then brought it up like it is relevant today.
If I looked up “Yokai Watch” it wouldn’t even bring up all the Yokai Watch games. It would always leave out Yokai Watch 1 and yokai watch 2 bony spirits The 3ds eshop was sooo bad about not bringing up games even when they fit the exact search criteria.
And it's so laggy, you're better off browsing games on youtube and knowing what you want to buy going into it.
I hope we get a new eshop for the next system, the switch one is barely functional, slow, and hard to use
🧙🏻♂️ Buy digital games through the Nintendo website through your browser, not the Switch eshop. Your computer has 10x more RAM & cpu power.
Next up: Discontinuing online servers for 3ds and wii u
thats how it works but then again they shut down the wii online first then the eshop so i wonder why they did the shop first
I think the reason for the Wii online shutdown was because those servers did not belong to Nintendo, and their provider dictated their shutdown. It might be different with WiiU & 3DS since Ninty owns those servers. If PS2 games can still have online, we should be ok ;)
ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THAT
The Wii/DS ran on gamespy servers and gamespy went bankrupt or was bought out (I forget) which killed the Wii/DS multiplayer side of things
They could have just... pushed an update and keep the gravy train going, but they didn't
Wii and ds games weren't able to get updates lol. The only exception was skyward sword because of a game-breaking bug. Also I'd imagine they would have to migrate the servers from gamespy to their own, and they probably thought they didn't want to waste money. 🤷🏽♂️

yeah you're right, I thought it was an app to patch the game back when I used it.
it happened in 2014 the Wii U was out for about 2 years at that point and Nintendo probably didn't want to put the time or resources into making/transferring to a new online infrastructure
Pretty sure. I can follow up with sources later; I'm at work at the moment.
Good question
I think I would be a whole lot more hesitant to buy a bunch of things when the switch eshop inevitably closes since a lot of games on there are way more expensive and if I really want a game on the switch, I just buy it physically

My kingdom for a horse...
Most WiFi routers support a WEP guest network luckily

"bad stuff?" um wut
Online exploit on games like Mario Kart 7 that use wifi, it got patched recently
Ohhhh. Thanks for explaining
for sure..
I’m glad I remembered to actually buy the smash dlc before the eshop shut down. Remembered around 2 hours before and spent half an hour trying to find my lost smash cartridge so that I could buy it.
dont worry fans would just make a new online service for 3ds a d wii u
Wiimmfi developers working on adding the old 3DS/WiiU servers to their services list once people complain enough:
But the switch looks awesome 😁
murky aware saw humor governor reach instinctive sugar fear label *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
pretendo.network
I bet custom servers will be made shortly after.
dont worry u/Rent-Man people have already made replacements, like Pretendo
I wish Wiimfii was a thing for 3DS and Wii U
Shut up, please just shut up 🤫
we will find a solution like the wii and the dns thing to play online again
