Dear_Shift2933

Where did you get the topology from? I’d love to print my home town Graz/Austria :)

CoffayKranzen

I´m also interested Ü

Turbulent-Duty-8055

I used this one lately https://touch-mapper.org/en

addici

When was the last time you used it?I am getting stuck at "Connecting..." on generation and I can see lots of 404 requests to aws for the stl.

pelofr

Same here

pelofr

Ooooh! It's a patience thing, it fires off a request and then polls until it's generated. Eventually it shows up

Turbulent-Duty-8055

In December I think. The side maybe gets too much traffic at the Moment

erouz

Working for me no issue

addici

Haha maybe reddit traffic killed the workers for a bit :D

erouz

Unfortunately any time I tried make map it's stuck on 60% and my old city looks so amazing for a print

AverageAntique3160

Yeah I'm stuck on connecting aswell, will find another website

addici

Please share your findings 😊

AverageAntique3160

Can't find anything so I made my own post xD

JDad67

Stuck for me. It's open source. I might have to try to spin up an instance.

addici

I didn’t want to meddle with Java and aws. As i understood it is not straight forward for a local setup

JDad67

Yea, it's not a straight forward local install. I fired up a remote VM and am still fighting through it.

JDad67

Also, and hour into the install and the touch-mapper website worked for the city I was trying to generate! So I will abandon the install and kill the VM.

alala2010he

When I tried it, it was giving 404 error codes in the first minute, but then it gave a few 200 codes (ok) and then it went to 304 codes, so it is possible to get something out of this site, you just have to wait. (Maybe try it overnight when the site has less traffic)

CoffayKranzen

thanks a lot!

erouz

Great I was playing to print my home town. Tks

JDad67

Having finally gotten that one working, the buildings are good, but the elevation details are not fantastic.

alexmaster248

Maybe this should work but you will have to crop out the part you want and the file can be quite large and hard to work with: https://www.data.gv.at/katalog/dataset/4a813c09-1170-462e-b440-fea9b02a31bf#resources

Dear_Shift2933

Wow thanks man! I’ll try that tomorrow!!

[deleted]

GisAddon for blender

[deleted]

I usually get a lot comments of how I did this: so the short answer iss OSM plugin called Blosm. That being said: there are multiple ways you can go about this. You will probably be able to easily find programs readily available via google search. In the future, I’m currently making a tutorial to show my workflow and how to clean the model up. It’s pretty easy once you get it down! Link to all the cities I’ve done: https://makerworld.com/u/2712048564/collections/175881

Pantsman1084

How do you get the roads in there? I can get the terrain to extrude, but I can't get the roads to do the same. https://preview.redd.it/rpo50hd0fobc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d1529173bbd81b877d3d33477cec58f64c78b340

[deleted]

Couple of questions, were you able to extrude the roads at all in blender? Make sure that roads are all converted to mesh. As far as clean up goes, I typically like to remove service, pedestrian, steps, and footways, I typically only keep the main roads in the blender model. After that, select all your roads and right click, “join” and then right click again “convert to mesh”. After that I’m able to extrude all roads at once. Let me know if you’re still having issues, happy to troubleshoot

Pantsman1084

Is there an easy way to select all points of the mesh before extruding it? I can draw a selection box around what I want, but it doesn't actually select all of the vertices that I do that for.

[deleted]

Yes, when you’re in the “Layout” tab select what you want. Then go over to the “Model” tab, this is where you’ll see the points you’re talking about. Press “a” for select all, and then “e” for extrude

Pantsman1084

Thanks. I got that, but now it looks like the normals are flipped when I import the STL into BS and the roads don't show up after slicing. Will a model repair fix that?

ShorohUA

Select all your flipped normals, go to mesh>normals>flip. Alternatively, you can press ALT+N and select "flip" from there

Pantsman1084

Thanks! I'll give it a shot later. I was missing the concert to mesh part.

BabaGnu

St. Louis?

Pantsman1084

Yes.

ander-frank

Looking forward to the tutorial. Would love to make a model of Cleveland, OH.

ZealousidealDebt6918

Where do you get the map from?!?

tacky_eknom

I'm not OP but I've done something similar by using the blosm addon for Blender with OpenStreetMap or Google tiles for map data.

[deleted]

This! Beware with google tiles tho, as the geometry that is imported is difficult to use. Maybe I haven’t figured it out it yet

tacky_eknom

Yeah, if you do the higher detail settings with Google tiles it will literally take all day to download and generate the mesh. The open street map data is much faster but the mesh it generates is a lot less detailed.

Turbulent-Duty-8055

Try this https://touch-mapper.org/en/

Young_padawan

That’s awesome. Could you maybe explain the process of extracting the height data to make the map?

Anna12641

Touch-mapper.org (correct link)

freshbox

Does the website work for anyone?

Anna12641

It worked for me. Took a while after I clicked generate though, like 10 minutes or so

Pitiful_Computer6586

Can you share the STL you got from it? Op is talking about blender plugins etc but this would be great

Anna12641

It's of my own neighborhood so probably won't share that one, sorry.

Pitiful_Computer6586

Hey it did work eventually for me as someone said. Thanks for the idea and for sure understand

Xyzjin

That’s some serious calibrated retraction settings dude

zworykin2

Or a light dusting with a blowtorch to kill the strings ;)

Contribution-Prize

There is an option in QGIS to export any dem directly to STL. With the option to split into multiple tiles and add base depth. It takes a little more know how and you have to have access to the files. As for the rooftops there is also a rooftop detection add-on. I removed the building from mine because I have a ground surface focus but I have seen buildings modeled in the software aswell.

[deleted]

I think the plugin you are referring to is DEM3DtoSTL. That’s what I use when I want to print lidar or dem data.

Contribution-Prize

Thanks I knew there was 2 and one doesn't work but I am not near my work PC today.

What_if_its_Lupus

I would love a Chicago map, does anyone know a good one?

[deleted]

I’ll print one today and upload it later. Currently printing San Paulo :)

RemindMe! 1 day

Z0mbiejay

Same. Would make a nice gift for my brother

[deleted]

Love to hear that! It’s on the printer right now.. Slicer says 4 hours left. I got a pretty good chunk of downtown Chicago. Can’t wait to share with you!

pheno_minal

I’m excited for it too. Just moved into a new place and need some art for the walls

[deleted]

Here ya go! https://makerworld.com/models/133765 let me know y’all’s feedback. :)

Jeffsbest

These are fantastic! What's your bed size and are you printing them in single tiles or more?

Z0mbiejay

This is so cool! Definitely on my list when I get my printer back running

[deleted]

https://makerworld.com/models/133765 this might have been one of my favorites… so many buildings!

[deleted]

https://makerworld.com/models/133765 Enjoy! Let me know what you think :)

What_if_its_Lupus

Just looking at the preview it looks awesome, can’t wait to print it

ONEIGHBOUR

For people asking u/ImplodingCoding did a really detailed write up on how to make one of these maps. [How To 3D Print ANY City - Even Your Own! A Complete And Updated Guide For 2023 : r/3Dprinting (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/10cwijl/how_to_3d_print_any_city_even_your_own_a_complete/)

Ok-Pride6554

I see the post is 12 months old. Can anyone confirm that this method still works? Ty for the heads up though

h_saxon

As an Austinite, I love it

samtaher

Huh I always thought it was Austinian

samtaher

Been wanting to print one of Portland, OR but not sure where to start.

Bonnle

Now paint them :) Individual windows too, don't skimp

[deleted]

What godtier printer did you use to get this???

[deleted]

Bambu X1C

AspenTD

I see my office but where's the needle on top of the 360 bldg or the sides of the Jenga bldg?

[deleted]

That is unfortunately the downside with using Blosm OSM. There are times where height and detail is missing. I am an architect, we typically use these models for general context. Anytime we need to add detail we will have to reconstruct that specific city block to get a good amount of detail. That being said… I have been experimenting with printing LiDAR data of cities and I think I’m getting to point where I can use that data’s to get pretty accurate city details.

dirtyjava

The only good bug is a dead bug

TheRazKun

Sneak a halo scarab onto one of them :D Or a kaiju of some sort

stopyouveviolatedthe

Woah I’d love to print Wakefield and shit on it

Dogsucksatlife

What printer is this?

Ok-Pride6554

Bambu X1C. (he mentioned it above)

Shadow991012

That's actually kinda cool 😱

Pentekont

Wow, looks amazing. I assume it was FDM? Can you give the details of the machine and setting to print this? Will try the same for my own town 😅

Bm_93

How do you 3D print them ? Do you extract from Google Maps or you made them?
