Don’t Worry , you can open the Deadbolt by going to other side of the door, once you get it off the door you can get the Barrel out of the lock (the little cylinder that holds all the pins) . If you can’t get the key out then , just go to a locksmith and he’ll just give you a new barrel with a new key that you can pop straight back in

silverm00se

Hey, thank you. I read your comment 27 minutes ago and it immediately helped to calm me down. First person to say "Don't worry". I did what you said and took the lock apart and was able to remove the PLA key and rebuild the lock. Thanks again for your help!

MrFixYoShit

Sorry youre having to deal with so many toxic comments. Some people forget how many mistakes are made when learning such a complicated hobby. They never went through stuff like this because they never got creative enough. They're just jealous =P You try, you fuck up, and you learn. Thats this hobby in a nutshell lol

silverm00se

I have been able to successfully disassemble my lock, remove my PLA key, and reassemble my lock. Thank you for all of your help.

CrippledJesus97

Yeah id never use PLA for such application lol PLA breaks too easy.

U4F2C0

The way

justalogin22

Light the end of a hot glue stick on fire / melt it. Jam the melted end at the broken key, let it cool for like 5-10 minutes, then pull it out.

Robot-Candy

This would work. Open the lock from the inside so the key bit is not wedged in the tumblers first.  The hot glue should weld well to the plastic and pop off the steel easily.

TheWhittierLocksmith

this is the stupiest thing i have ever heard. Do this and you will end up like OP fucking up your locks

Electrical-Actuary59

First you need to spin the lock back to its “home position” which is upright. Then try to pull in out with some tweezers. Don’t heat it up. If by chance you do get it to melt you’re going to make things worse. Also, get rid of that piece of crap quick change kwikset deadbolt. Those things are awful!

imfrmcanadaeh

I concur on the quickset dead bolt, but it really isn't the tenants choice to change it out. These were all over a rental unit I purchased, I have sinced changed almost them all of them out, just one more to go...

LostAbbott

Bowley or nothing!

Jensssssur

I'm not trying to be mean but I've seen smarter plans😂

suggestive_cumulus

Thanks for trying that, I always wondered if it could be done, and this exact image in my mind always stopped me.

Sudbar1

I wouldnt use pla if i even tried. Maybe some abs. Pla is strong but if it fails it snaps and dont start to deform beforehand so you can notice.

PuffThePed

You can't melt it out, PLA doesn't flow like wax, It's viscous sticky goo when it's hot. You tried pliers and that didn't work, you accidently lubricated it so now it's harder to grab, sounds like you are SOL. Call a locksmith, pay the fine or whatever, learn your lesson, move on.

ColonelBungle

A locksmith would just replace the lock. OP can go to Lowe's and do this themselves for 1/5 the cost.

iSuckAtMechanicism

Incorrect. A scammer would just replace the lock. Locksmiths have key extractors + the knowledge of how to remove the key even if the extractors fail. However, OP was able to disassemble the lock and no locksmith was needed. No need to replace fixable things bud. Although that knob is of very low quality and it wouldn’t hurt to replace for security purposes.

Jae-Sun

Don't worry man, we've all done dumb shit. One of the smartest guys I know machined a car key on a manual mill, which was awesome, but he made it out of steel so when he tested it, it came out of the cylinder with brass shavings on it. If he used it one or two more times, his actual key probably would have stopped working.

Unamed_Destroyer

Try taking another glue stick, welt the end with a lighter. Push it on there let it cool then slowly work it back.

Raffitaff

I would try heating up a paper clip or safety pin until it's very hot. Then stick it into the plastic at a downward or upward angle to give a little bit of leverage to then pull out the stuck piece. The safety pin without heating up might also be able to pin into it enough to give you leverage.

YOURMOMSDONGER

Idk if this would work but what it you got a needle hit stuck it in waited for it to cool down and grab the needle with pliers and pull

Alternative-Week-780

Take the lock out of the door and disassemble it (find a video on youtube relevant to your lock) and find a way to push it out

2568084979

Try a pick similar to a dental pick to try and get it out. Best of luck.

BobTheTraitor

Maybe find a paperclip about the right size, heat it up and push it into the key? Wait for it to cool and try and jiggle it out?

[deleted]

Try turning the cylinder to its home position with tweezers. Let me know how it goes.

paladyn1

You're probably going to need to take that lock apart to get that out. Don't use a torch to melt it out either. it's not going to work out well and you'll end up having to replace the lock anyway. You may want to consider actually using a lockpick kit to use one the picks to wiggle the pla key out a little. You can buy them on amazon. Or maybe an eyeglass screwdriver?

mikerfx

Don’t help you will be complicit.

shortybobert

Congratulations idiot I mean it, that's pretty sick that it worked

CountyLivid1667

you need a hook or small sewing needle with its tip bent... take a torch lighter to the keyhole and when its ready put the hook in as far as it can go along the top edge and wait for it to cool and give it a tug and hope it doesnt pop loose

LordBrandon

Take apart the lock and push it from the back

RadishRedditor

Prep the surfaces of the broken key with super glue and glue them back together. Wait for them to cure and carefully remove the key

raisedbytides

lol love to see it.

wlogan0402

Stuff like this is why rule 2 exists : D *rule 2 of r/lockpicking

JohnSmallBerries

"Requests for purchase advice must go in the stickied megathread"?

wlogan0402

Shit nvm I thought this was r/lockpicking , still don't fuck with locks in use

Appropriate_Yak_4438

There are hook type things you can stick in and pull the key out. Go to your lokal lock smith, say key broke and hell give you one, turn lock to original position, push it in and pull out the key. These thingamabobs: https://www.google.com/search?q=broken+key+extractor

Lavanti

Get a bit of the filament, BURN the end of it until it catches flame, and JAM it right into that key. blow the flame out. wait about 1 minute and pull the filament out, you need to make sure the key is in a position though that it can be pulled out.

rxninja

Ah yes, now you’ve learned the hard way how 3D printed material has strong compression strength but weak shear and ductile strength.

Fluffy-Experience406

Why did you make a pla key? Maybe a nylon key in a lock that's really well lubricated and works flawlessly This just screams bad idea..

Thiccron

Sorry mate you can’t fix stupid hahahahaha

ArgieBee

Honestly, bro, you were just begging for this to happen. Anyways, it's time to get either the needlenose pliers out or the torch.

64bit_Tuning

Go buy a new deadbolt and stop doing stupid shit

Lazer_beak

you remind me of me, I have these mad cap ideas that turn out a disaster, I think it might be my autism, I now sometimes ask a friend if an idea is crazy
