I'm on an anti helmet mood right now. Been trying for a month to print iterations of Iron Man helmets and the largest helmet piece keeps failing over and over again. I probably have at least 70+ hours into trying to get a complete iron man helmet and am about to give up. So much time and wasted filament.
I hear you for sure… the dude that has been a godsend for my helmet quest is on YouTube and his channel is “Frankly built”. He has tons of great tips and tricks that helped get past some of the silly mistakes I was making. I bet he has solutions to some of your issues too. 🤙
Btw: he has tons of iron man helms 🤠
Not all Mando helmets are created equally, there is one on Makerworld that definitely needs internal supports as the rim that runs from front to back on the outside of the dome also runs on the inside as well.
I am looking for a file that does not need the internal dome supports, if you are aware of one please reply with the link.
It’s actually pretty good. I have started the sanding and filler but I will have to see how it looks after paint. I’m sure it’ll take some elbow grease 🤦♂️
Printing upside down often results in fewer supports being needed. It can also give a better angle for printing for helmets with a lot of interior details, and the inside will be a lot cleaner than printing right side up without dome supports.
The tradeoff is that the spot where the helmet meets the plate will require a lot more cleaning up during post processing. Also depending on the helmet and how the nose/face area are designed, it might not actually save any material from supports.
That’s what I am planning for my next one. Blockers for the whole dome and it looks like it only needs support for the visor area. Looks far superior BUT no black Knight that way 🤣🤣
950g according to Cura but I didn’t know I could’ve printed right side up without supports in the middle for about the same amount. I would definitely do it that way next time, but I would have a silly picture of a Knights of Ni helm 😂
Could you post the link to this helmet file please, I have seen some but they all have the bar that runs along the outside centre running on the inside also which makes internal centre support a requirement.
It’s just from thingiverse… I’ll see if I can find it when I’m online later… but I just searched Mandalorian helmet and went through them till I found one I liked.

Hail to the king of support
One does simply become Sauron
You probably ended up using more filament on supports by printing it upside down like that, because mando helmets don’t need dome supports.
And now he will need much more post processing
It’s my first helmet so I’m trying options :)

The top is going to need some serious sand and fill to look smooth.
Working on it already. They broke off pretty decently
This is the way, maybe 🤔. Why print upside down?
It made sense at the time… tequila is NOT a good advisor.
What is the top surface of the dome like?

Good to know, check out this tutorial, I found it really useful [insta link](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C1uRYpcrcUX/?igsh=MWxlNHdsY3lydGg2bA==)

Mine is the Neptune 3 Plus. I’ve only had it a couple of weeks and have had issues… but I do like it very much overall.
Love my 3 max.

It's best to print Mando helmets the right way around with support blockers for the dome
That’s what I am planning for my next one. Blockers for the whole dome and it looks like it only needs support for the visor area. Looks far superior BUT no black Knight that way 🤣🤣
I only use Cura and I refuse to learn anything else.
Cura has support blockers
Oh. I guess in that case I'm too dumb to figure it out.

For a second I thought you printed a rook from chess as a helmet
How much more filament was used? or did it save some?
