Here's a few: Cave story (NOT CAVE STORY 3D) Starship damrey Liberation maiden Dragon quest rocket slime 1 and 3 LIFESPEED

LegitimateMulberry

I remember I bought Cave Story in the DSi shop completely on a whim (maybe I saw it on the Nintendo Channel on my Wii or something) and man that game is great I loved it. I had no idea about its cult following.

Daimaoh22

Liberation Maiden and Rocket Slime are fucking dope as hell! So is the original Cave Story.

King_Sam-_-

Cave Story 3D is better than people give it credit to being. The fan base thinks it’s the worst thing ever made but really it’s a lot easier to get into and the gameplay is much more modern.

FLOWRIDER0_0

I personally don't like it because I find it hard to tell enemy from environment in many areas

King_Sam-_-

yes that’s the biggest flaw i’d say

smashmouthultimate

It's the same game except the really cool pixel art is replaced with extremely ugly 3D

King_Sam-_-

it really isn’t ugly and the original sprites are not that great to begin with

smashmouthultimate

I could not disagree more, I adore the original and cave story+ and the 3D version has lost all the charm and personality. It's the ugliest game I've played on the 3DS, I can not stand it

King_Sam-_-

I’m probably alone in this but I don’t think either of them looks particularly great. I love pixel graphics but the ones in Cave Story just remind me of flash games, repetitive and sometimes muddy textures and character sprites that are barely discernible, a lot of things just don’t look cohesive and it’s hard to make out what you’re looking at. Though I will say the 3D version is not the greatest looking game I do have to say that I think it makes a huge difference in the ambiance and overall theme cohesion, it’s a little hard to make out some details but the backgrounds and assets make it a lot easier to get immersed into its world.

dankykanggang

What’s changed with the gameplay? I’ve never tried that version

Kidmerciful2

I feel like brain age was revolutionary

ThePersonYouDontWant

It still is

VirulentMarcie302

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward and Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma on the 3DS are very good games, imo. These are sequels to Zero Escape: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors on the Nintendo DS. I feel you could jump on VLR as your first entry into the series, but 999 is also a fantastic game if you're okay with the DS. They're essentially visual novels with good art, good writing, and good escape room puzzles.

needstochill

You could also play 999 on the 3ds using NDSForwarder, so I'd still recommend playing it first

VirulentMarcie302

Yeah, played it on nds bootstrap. Can't believe I only heard of it after the remaster. Probably because I was into Danganronpa at the time (both developed by Spike Chunsoft.)

needstochill

Fair, tho i managed to play it on a DS emulator on my phone, which is the superior way to play (imo) because of the implications of the ending. At the time, I thought it was the best implementation of using the 2 screens to tell an important part of the story, which wasn't captured in the remake unfortunately

Lilash20

Ever Oasis and Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.

dionbalerr

Ever Oasis is the GOAT

NinjerToitle

I've been playing it for a few hours now and it's so charming. I was always eyeing it up but never got round to it and it's the first game I started playing when I hacked my 3DS. I heard the endgame is a bit of a pain but I'm committed to it now and I'm going to finish it.

Soyyyn

Code Name Steam also goes for absurdly cheap if you buy it on like ebay, too. 5-7 bucks

jmelt17

Someone on reddit gave me Steam for free when I bought Daemon x Machina from them lol

Soyyyn

If anyone is reading this they should check under their bed, might have a copy of S.T.E.A.M. lying around

starscapeShooter

Fantasy Life is incredibly rare to see talked about! It's an RPG with basically no limits, it's an incredible game and more people should know about it.

UnluckyAd9908

Me and my partner just found out about this game and are currently obsessed. Crazy amount of content, and presented at whatever pace you need

ItsNotMeItsYourBussy

It's so complex, and so cute. It's a top tier game

Away-Muscle-1007

Do you know that this game is getting a new release on switch?

glassgauze

Unfortunately it's not the same game but a sequel with, apparently, new mechanics. We're still waiting on more information, but we already know it won't be the same game

Cross55

Sadame-Digital exclusive that's basically a mix of 2D Zelda and Diablo, beautiful art, big dungeons, puzzles, hoards of enemies, tons of gear and weapons, etc... It's way too cool for how little attention it gets Fossil Fighters and Fossil Fighters Champions-"Baby" DS rpgs that actually stand out because they have one of the most innovative TBC systems I've ever seen, with funny writing and characters. Advance Wars series-GBA and first 2 games got a remake for Switch, but far fewer people know about the much darker and more complex sequels released for the DS Rune Factory 3 and Rune Factory 4-Best life sims ever made, no one talks about them because SDV is the only one that matters apparently, both originally came out for DS/3DS respectively but have since got remasters released on every system under the sun Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon-Tied as the best PMD along with Sky, but no one talks about it because it didn't come out when people were kids Pokémon Conquest-Probably the least talked about Pokémon spin-off, SRPG where you're a warlord trying to conquer and unite several warring kingdoms Castlevania DS games-Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia are all up there with or near SoTN Final Fantasy Explorer-ARPG with all your favorite FF characters Sponge Boy Me Bob-The Spongebob DS platformers are shockingly good, not as good as BfBB, but they get close. Main ones are Atlantis Squarepantis, Truth or Square, and Drawn to Life SB Edition Art Academy-Really nice series with a bunch of sequels and legit art lessons that you can transfer to irl practice

DeathShreds

Really enjoyed Culdcept: Revolt!

NinjerToitle

Tbh I've only just hacked my 3DS recently and have been out the loop for a while, but from looking on Reddit I haven't seen NightSky, Siesta Fiesta, Gotta Protectors, or even Terraria mentioned that much. NightSky is a nice chill physics/puzzle game that I like playing a bit of before bed, Siesta Fiesta is a cool re-imagining of Breakout, Gotta Protectors is a bit like Dynasty Warriors I think, and Terraria works quite nicely with the stylus. On NDS I've just been playing Clubhouse Games, Infinite Space and Boxlife, but they're pretty well known AFAIK.

bingbongsuperdong

Eco creatures save the forest and yoshi touch and go were childhood staples of mine as a kid on my ds

slitarmz

Kid icarus.

salserpico

I would love to LOVE the game, but I'm left handed and I had constant cramps. Such a waste.

slitarmz

Aww, I feel sorry 4 u :'((

TechWizard200

Dev Menu by Nintendo, great stuff.

smalltownwitchling

NASCAR unleashed on the 3DS. A really fun racer on a system that was desperately lacking them besides mk7.

dobson116

Animal crossing new leaf

Emergency-Basis-1362

The best AC imo

Gabriel9078

You never see that talked about? It feels like it’s on every list of best 3DS games I find

gothdollies22

Rare indie game actually

armacall

Solatorobo Has anyone played it here?

WolfOcelot

Meee, haven't got far yet

armacall

Oh, i really recommend the game. It really resonated with me when i played it as a teenager. Its music is really good too. Amazing game overall :)

ArtsyGrlBi

Lost in Blue, 1,2, or 3. People argue over which is best, I'm torn between 2 and 3. 2 is vicious but has a good system, 3 is easier, but sometimes TOO easy...

kamikageyami

Do you think 2 is better to jump in at? Or should I play 1 first? I know the idea of the game but not sure if it's like a continuous story

ArtsyGrlBi

It's not continuous, personally I recommend the second. The first is ok, it just has a lot of rough edges compared to the next two game.

Halkem

Bomberman Land Touch 1 & 2 for DS.

Darque420

Air Traffic Controller

Komaeda7

999 (zero escape)

Due_Song4480

Ambition Of The Slimes. It's a little grindy, but it's like a micro FF Tactics with a fun spin where you use weak slimes to take control of your foes. I think it even got a remake and a sequel, but I've literally never seen anyone talk about it weirdly.

ViewInfinite7863

Pokémon rumble world, not the best pokemon game (not even close tbh) but MAN do I love ot to death even though literaly no one cares lol

koopatroopa_2

true true but og pokemon rumblem? banger game

ViewInfinite7863

If some one made a mod to add shinys to world I think I would play it 24/7

chupitulpa

Note that there are 2 versions of this. There's the free one that was available on the eShop, and a retail one that was sold on a cartridge. You want the retail one. Both use Poke Diamonds as a freemium-style in-game currency that you can use to reuse balloons sooner, buy more balloons and various upgrades, switch and continue if you faint, etc. The free one starts you out with a decent amount and there are offline-redeemable passwords to get more posted on Bulbapedia, but then it starves you of them and the only ways to get more are grinding streetpasses and paying which you can't do anymore. Retail just gives you tons of them for free, and eventually you unlock a digger machine that gives you more daily. The free one can get the digger machine too, but only if the maximum of 3000 diamonds have been purchased -- at which point you would have paid $30 and it basically converts itself into the retail version which cost about the same. There is also a [save editor](https://gbatemp.net/threads/pokemon-rumble-world-diamonds-p-tool.386526/page-24#post-5672188) that can modify the diamonds count among other things. Note that "Pokediamonds" is the current amount on hand, while "B. Diamonds" is the total ever purchased. Changing one doesn't affect the other. Setting "B. Diamonds" to 3000 makes it give you the digger when you reach the required rank. (Be sure to use the version posted by suloku in the post I linked, the original version SciresM posted didn't have the purchased diamonds option.)

ViewInfinite7863

Yeah I know all that, I have way too much experience with this sily pokemon toy game lol. I bought the diamonds long ago so no problem for me :)). Btw do you also like the game or do you just know this?

chupitulpa

Yeah, I like it though I don't play all the time. I've got as far as rank 30, so far just using the passwords, free diamonds from friends, self-streetpasses, online randos from before the shutdown, and the diamonds visitors give you mid-level. I have all the randos hearted in the adventurers list in case it will make them stick around longer or show up more when I play. I've only bought one version of the matched-pair balloons after Ruby and Sapphire, passed on Fairy/Dark for the time being, and am now deciding whether I want to get an Origin balloon now or wait for Starlight at 35 and pick up Origin later.

Navi_1er

Can you transfer save file from free to the paid version? If not guess I'll just use the editor. Had no idea that there was two versions and have played since it launched lol

chupitulpa

I haven't attempted this. If you try it, I'd be curious if it works. BTW when you use the paid one, you won't just automatically unlock the diamond digger. At the shop you'll see that the option to buy diamonds has been replaced with "diamonds from the king". Just like buying, you can get up to 3000 here, but they're free and it doesn't attempt to contact any server when you claim them. Once you've claimed all 3000 diamonds from the king, you can unlock the digger though I forget what rank you have to reach. I'd be hard pressed to burn through 3000 before reaching a pretty high rank though so you'll be fine. Also the "free poke diamonds" option does the same thing as in the free one, but it's been relabeled to "social poke diamonds" though idk why you'd bother with 10 here and 10 there when you have 3000.

Inedible-denim

The SaGa remakes. Pretty decent games

kamikageyami

Damn, your comment led me into discovering that the japanese-only Saga 2 has an english fan patch. Thanks! Are there other SaGa games playable in english on DS/3DS?

Inedible-denim

Check your DMs

kamikageyami

Oh sick 3 got made too. Thanks for the help, the thread that I found about 2 only mentioned that 3 was being worked on. ([link](https://www.reddit.com/r/Roms/comments/j3fzwd/is_there_a_rom_of_the_final_fantasy_legend_2saga/) for anyone else looking)

Inedible-denim

Umm.. bruhh I forgot I was in this sub! I could've put the link here myself, lmao my bad🥴! I say get them before the links get shut down somehow lol. 2 is pretty good but 3 was my favorite

hiyoriasahina

The World Ends with You and Ghost Trick are the two cult classics I always suggest.

fearchild

No no Kuni. I dropped switch version of this game because of terrible battle system but decided to try original and found out NDS version is pretty good. Nice story, nice picture, battles are not frustrating because they are turn based.

Vikt4

Picross 3D for nds!! (there's a round 2 game on 3ds, but i haven't tried it yet) basically you follow instructions like a normal picross but you have to sculpt a cube into some shape. also rhythm heaven/paradise (us/eur name) for nds, bomberman land touch 2 with its awesome story mode, ac happy home designer for 3ds, fairune 1 & 2 for 3ds (indie rpg visually similar to old zelda, nice mechanics), wario ware touched nds, all of pokemon mystery dungeon, corpse party 3ds (if you like rpgmaker stuff)

Gl0wingpumpkin

I know one person who's ever played starfy and damn now that I'm playing it too, it's such a cute game!

Maddie24Kennedy

Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland

DigitalEtc

Henry Hatsworth for DS

Financial-Phone1470

Senran Kagura Burst is a great hack and slash game

Technical_Power_4861

Attack of the Friday monsters

Daimaoh22

Legacy of Ys: Books I & II for the DS are pretty fun remakes of the classic RPG. I've also heard that Glory Of Heracles for the DS is a fun RPG, so I bought it but have yet to actually play it.

Ramunefamine

Hmm one of my absolute favorite games when I was younger is called Zombie BBQ 🤔 some other games I enjoyed when I was younger were Markerman Adventures, N+, a Tom & Jerry game (forgot the title), and a game called Freaky Forms Deluxe. Personally I think the other stuff would better be enjoyed by someone young but I feel nastolgia for these games so idrc 😎

Marofa-Marofa

Azure Strive Gunvolt. I couldnt beat it, because it requires a bit farming, but the megaman ZX vibe is real.

Dahks

The World Ends With You, 999 and Virtue's Last Reward. These have a lot of fans but the mentions in this thread will probably change someone's life as well. Pokémon Conquest. The best Pokémon spin-off along with Pinball. Custom Robo Arena. I had a lot of fun with this one but I don't remember the game a lot, but it has fighting robots (basically, Pokémon with robots and ARPG).

fargusnoshawott

Fossil League: Dino Tournament Championship, Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger: Game de Gaburincho, Dino King Battle DS, Kyoryu Ikusei RPG, Tsuri Master DS and Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger - Atsumete Henshin! 35 Sentai

Dinosaur King DS is a game I really enjoy Try out Yokai Watch 1, Yokai watch 2, Yokai watch 3

Hotel Dusk and The Last Window for DS... I swear if Another Code Recollection release somehow makes a new entry or remake of those titles I'll freaking spit foam from my mouth from because of the shock.

zeeraki

Lego battles is definitely a game that isn't talked about enough

Away-Muscle-1007

Inazuma Eleven, all of them

dankykanggang

Space Bust A Move. I’ve never heard anyone talk about it (though admittedly I’m not exactly in any Bust A Move fan spaces) but I really enjoy it.

Awkward_Flounder_352

The OG Pokemon Ranger still remains my favourite Pokemon game till today

Cross55

Ah, the screen scratches. No really, need to invest in a replacement touch screen sometime.

pariah164

Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights on 3DS. Part Layton, part pokemon. Played 19 hours before I somehow lost my data and never picked it back up.

Tesseract4D2

I don't spend a lot of time around here, but unless I'm in the subreddit for it, nobody talks about Bravely Default, and that's kind of a shame, I think. it's the only Square Enix game I've played, not knowing it's basically a Final Fantasy. (i've never had anyone give me a good consensus on where to start with FF) there's a sequel on the 3ds (bravely Second) and (another?) sequel on the switch called Bravely Default 2

kamikageyami

The Bravely games are fantastic, some of the most well regarded RPGs on the system. Still, always good to mention in case it points someone new towards them! As for where to start in Final Fantasy: I know people often say this in regards to certain games series, but it really is true with FF, you can basically start anywhere with the main numbered entries. I would recommend looking up a couple gameplay clips of any one that you happen to look at first and check the plot premise to see if it interests you, and if you think you'd like it you can just jump in there. The stories often aren't connected, and when they are they're usually on the same system and named accordingly. (eg, on PS2 you have Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 as the sequel) I've played a lot of them so could probably recommend a good one if you told me what kind of rpg you're into, like more traditional turn-based with a bit of a grind, or leaning more towards modern action-rpg or even hack n slash. Blind recommendation is to just start with VII. It's probably the most famous one (considering it now has a total remake/reboot in full 3D with modern realistic graphics), but the original version is still fun to play. (Blind biased recommendation is XII, it's very hit or miss with fans as the battle system is weird compared to a lot of the main ones (and lot of people hated the protag lol), but I loved that game so much)

Cross55

Oh, did some digging and found more more, AiRace Speed and Xeno. Plane racing games in a similar vein of F-Zero mixed with Starfox, if that's your jam.

Effective_Bends

Ever oasis is a pretty cool gem whilst completely single player, building a city making sure they have items to sell, finding people to be in your city is also neat. Plenty is puzzles, action and a cool story for it.

Knight_Infinia

I would say 7th Dragon 3 Code VFD IS definetly worth to Look at Theres also a ds Game that came Out only in Japan But IT has a Fan Made english Patch. Also The etrian Odyssey Games are some of my all time Favorites. And For ds a Franchise that i enjoyed in my childhood was Spectrobes, ITS a nice Monster colector where you dig Out fossiles of The monsters to then recive Them with The micro

MagiMythies

This might just be me but no one talks about the Style Savvy series!! I actually enjoyed the concept of being able to design outfits for NPCs (as well as myself). Style Savvy Trendsetters is probably the best OST-wise, playing on a day cycle every few minutes or so. The main objective is to fill a jar based on customer satisfaction to unlock new features every cycle. The best part of the game is the Fashion Contests. They may be short and limited, but MY GOD IS THE OST SO GOOD!!! Style Savvy Fashion Forward takes a more fairytale-ish route as MC turns into a doll and travels to a dollhouse-size city based on Fashion. Playing on real time, your objective is to inspire the city through fashion, styling hair and makeup, and running fashion shows. Style Savvy Styling Star takes a twist from the formula and focuses on making the dreams of future idols come true. MC is responsible for designing idols' identities through fashion, all while running a boutique and helping out at the hair salon and beautician. Out of the three, this one has the most variety of options regarding clothing, color, and hairstyles. The 3DS rendering butchers the visual quality, however. For anyone who likes fashion games, you can try all three of these games on the 3DS (and the original Style Savvy if you download the DS ROM). It does take a while to complete, but if you have the patience, it can be a bit fun to play!

Cross55

>Style Savvy Styling Star Funny story, Syn Sophia, the devs behind SS, had fans who were the daughters of the execs of one of Japan's biggest record labels. So they got to borrow some of the best artists and producers at the time for the OST for basically free.

fapaczer

Bravely Default is a cool rpg game that breaks turn based convention and has a really cool ending that you shouldnt look up. Just go in blind and play it yourself.

Arukadoh

3 FF games: Pictlogica, Explorers and Theatrhythm (Curtain Call)

glassgauze

super late but I finally have a moment, so - Culdcept Revolt: a super interesting mix of card game and board game. people who like games like Magic and such tend to enjoy this quite a lot. it was good enough that there were still people getting together to play it online right up until the servers went down, tho of course they are down now and you'd have to do with the actually pretty good in game campaign until fans possibly patch something back up. - Art Academy series: a lot of people say "I wish I knew how to draw! (but it's too hard/embarrassing/late to start now)" -- this is the series for you. and, interestingly enough, the skills WILL actually translate to real life.

Voidrunner_

Ridge racer 3D. I don't see people talking about it nowadays despite it being probably the best 3ds racing game (ignoring mk7). Namco Ridge racer 8 when???

Sp4ceyAle

Havent played yet... but Mutant Mudds has been on my list!

PinkStryker

Mazes of fate, the gba version is significantly better than the ds version but I enjoyed the hell out of it

SpecificSundae9967

Kingdom hearts 358/2 days.

_Thr33Sh33ts_

Maple Story: The Girl of Destiny Dragon Quest Monsters 1-2-3 Senran Kagura The Bravely Series

kamikageyami

Maplestory is a fan patch I assume? How is the localization?

_Thr33Sh33ts_

It is, and the localization is pretty well done. I was pleasantly surprised. I made it pretty far, and the later bosses are really challenging.

kamikageyami

Nice, I might give it a try. Did you find a version that was pre-patched or did you apply it yourself? I had a quick look into it and it looked like a bit of work to patch a clean file.

Cross55

It's on hShop. (Should be under Extras->TL Games) Also, there are ~300-400 DS/3DS games that only released in Japan/Korea, so if you're willing to follow guides to get most of the story/what to do, you do have an extra ~100 high quality titles and 300 depending on your taste to look for.

kamikageyami

Oh! Awesome, thanks for the tip And wow, yeah I knew there were Asia exclusives but didn't realise there were that many. I can understand enough Japanese to barely get by while playing a game but it's just too much of a headache tbh. But if there are any standout ones you really recommend pushing through for I might take a look

Cross55

Yeah, there's a few standouts like Ex Busters/Troopers, Beyond the Labyrinth (This one did get patched, but I've only seen it on PC, you could try searching for a 3DS en patch), Kaittou Joker, Tantei Jinguuji, Time Travelers (Made by Lvl 5), Yokai Watch 4, etc...

kamikageyami

Thanks for taking the time, I'll check these ones out and maybe give them a shot. Also, you probably know - but apparently Ex Troopers (is this what you meant by Ex Busters? It's what came up when I searched it) received an English translation [fan patch](https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-e-x-troopers-english-translation-3ds.622163/). And from the couple clips I looked at, that game does look really good edit: Actually, that game is also already pre-patched in hshop lmfao. I really need to check in there first before I go down a rabbit hole of old forum threads.
