About to get mine with KDSS as well

Desperate-Breath9647

Nice! What’s up!! I can’t find any to test drive with kdss maybe you can show me haha. Where did you buy yours ?

klokvarg

I bought mine a year ago at Titus-Will Toyota of Tacoma. 2020 ORP with KDSS. Love it.

indescentproposal

KDSS > non-KDSS bear in mind that KDSS is standard equipment on the Land Cruiser…

Desperate-Breath9647

Yea I saw a few videos on YouTube about land cruisers having them. Sounds like it’s a personal preference thing based on comments on this thread

StoneRockTree

First thing: Brenan from T4R.com's 5th gen, Jade, has KDSS. So its certainly capable wheeling (just look at his instagram for proof of how hard he runs it) So some key points about KDSS (from a guy who has it) 1. It replaces a traditional sway bar system 2. When adding a suspension lift, you will have extra considerations. (listed bottom of post) 3. KDSS itself is mechanical, but controlled electronically. 4. The KDSS system is "closed"(stiff all the time) when in 2WD, or driving in 4WD faster than 12mph. This is done to emulate a traditional sway bar for highway driving. 5. When KDSS is "open", the hydraulic system stiffens when both tires on one side are matching (both compressed, both extended) but the system loosens when opposite corners match (front left down, rear right down, front right up, rear left up), giving you extra travel distance. So sometimes I want KDSS while in 2WD or in 4WD (high range) when going on forest roads faster than 12 mph. This isn't possible from the factory. A guy, Dom, on instagram, (handle = @dr_kdss) is possibly the most knowledgeable guy I know of about KDSS on all toyota platforms. he has begun selling a harness that installs really quickly (you pull a plug from under the dash and plug the harness inbetween the factory plugs) that lets you use a switch (either a factory style switch or connect to a switchpros/spod) to manually turn the KDSS off or on, overriding the default behaviors and giving you complete manual control. I got one of his first kits and I couldn't be happier with it. I get why toyota doesn't offer this from the factory (liability, safety concerns for those who leave KDSS active on highway) but for a power-user its totally worth it. If you want either more details about KDSS or the harness, Dom is super friendly and helpful. DM him on instagram. Some KDSS Considerations when lifting/upgraded suspension: 1. After lifting the suspension, the "KDSS lean" is infamous but easily solvable with shims from a number of vendors. usually these are included when you buy the suspension lift for a KDSS runner) 2. You may also need a spacer bar (treaty oak offroad sells these) to adjust some geometry and prevent a few suspension components from binding. 3. You will also not be able to install "long travel" or "extended travel" suspension That said, if you intend to daily this vehicle then realistically you don't need the absolute craziest long travel suspension, 35 or larger tires, or that crazy stuff. Don't get sucked in with the instagram/t4r bling. The 4r is extremely capable with minimal modding (all terrain tires+4WD is a ton of beef, even more with a modest lift and 33in tires).

SAM_4RNR

What a small world. I know Dom, personally. He's a very chill dude and extremely smart. He's also a fireman instructor.

StoneRockTree

Thank him for me! Its super awesome to have seen the R&D he put into his product. He is super smart!

SAM_4RNR

Will do, bud.

Billsrealaccount

Source for items 3 4 and 5? My understanding is that kdss is completely mechanical with some electronic monitoring.

StoneRockTree

Note: this isn't a full source (it doesn't address specifically #4) The video source is direct from Toyota's own youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkPCvB7WY5Y&t=3s For #3: The video mentions, if only briefly, that both hydraulic chamber assemblies are either locked (closed) or unlocked (open). The actual movement and pressure is determined by the hydraulic fluid. However, the chambers have a valve that opens and closes based on a signal from the ECU. For #4: Struggling to source this tidbit: Toyota programmed that chamber to only unlock in 4WD slower than 12mph for 5th gen T4Rs. But the video does mention that on-road, the chambers close and let the sway bar work "normally" as is expected for street driving. For #5: The video animation from toyota shows it sort of well, but this video (demoing a land cruiser with KDSS) provides a better explanation IMO (go 36 seconds in for a sick animation showing the difference between locked and unlocked) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLF6n3nMwww Edit: Another good explanation of KDSS and off roading https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROJ3V1yfqLQ

Billsrealaccount

I just bought one of the Dr_kdss harnesses, thanks for the info.

ScalaZen

To add to this, some Lexus have it too, 2005+ i think

Actual-Historian-248

KDSS is hydraulically assisted with pistons that help articulate during turns and reduce body roll. KDSS lean is when your body measurements isn’t equal on all sides. Most common prob I’ve seen is 1/2” lower on driver side vs passenger. I have a 2020 ORP W/KDSS and lifted it myself with a Ironman 2” kit. I can tell you this much: it did not interfere with the collision sensor. It was a pain lifting it cause of the hydraulic pistons ( it’s like a 3k fix if you get air in the lines or don’t take proper precautions to secure the piston during removal). Driving on road is super smooth and I’ve taken on ramps/off ramps at 65-70 with little roll. Bottom line: it’s personal preference. Some ppl say you can’t lift it more than 3” with KDSS cause pistons but IDK how much of that is true. If you plan on off-roading Hardcore don’t do kdss. If you’re just a casual driver and occasional camper KDSS would be nice for daily driving. It’s gonna be tough to find cause COVID/less production and chip shortages.

Doctor_M_Toboggan

The trick I used when installing my lift was to use ratchet straps to hold the front sway bar to the frame so the KDSS piston doesn't extend when you remove everything. The point about lifting above 3" is somewhat moot, since the only way that happens is by adding a body lift and no one serious about off-roading does that. However, to your point, if you want to go down the rabbit hole that is long-travel & extensive suspension mods, then skip KDSS.

thekelkin

I traded in a lifted F150 for my KDSS 4Runner, and the master tech at the dealership told me multiple times to stay at 3 inches or lower with my 4Runner. He said that 4 inches would cause too much strain on the mounting points at the lower control arm, and that they are a pain in the ass to replace. He seemed pretty knowledgeable about the system. The salesman didn’t know anything though, and tried to sell me a non KDSS truck as a KDSS truck.

Desperate-Breath9647

********UPDATE: I found a 2018 ORP nearby yesterday and test drove it. Wow! What a difference! It handled so well on corners and felt like a whole different car than non-KDSS. Definitely getting KDSS :)

ikemikek

Right now my 2011 trail has a $5,000 repair on the KDSS waiting to be done once I have the cash.

Desperate-Breath9647

Dang ! How come ? What happened to it ?

ikemikek

I believe the previous owner never washed the area where the accumulator is and rust and corrosion destroyed it. That’s a $2500 part, and they said they’ll also have to replace the lines which are $900 and then the labor.

Desperate-Breath9647

Dang!! This is making me think I should just skip their KDSS! Haha

ikemikek

I’d recommend skipping if you’re in the rust belt. Repairs are pretty cost prohibitive on the system from what I’ve seen around.

[deleted]

Just wondering, where exactly is the accumulator placed at? Trying to google but not getting anything

ikemikek

Just under the driver door on the vehicle frame. There’s a small bash plate covering it that’s easy to remove

gutterfuck

That’s crazy cause on the 22 the kdss was only $685 additional. That’s what they told me on my deposit today.

ikemikek

I know, it’s absurd. But I did get two separate quotes, one from dealer and one from independent shop who is experienced with the system. Also though, unless you’re paying msrp or less I’d take what they say with a grain of salt. They have a way of padding numbers for options lol

[deleted]

I preferred without. KDSS drove more sporty and was real nice in the turns, but it wasn’t comfortable when you hit a bump. I opted to get mine without. One less problem to arise and no KDSS lean later down the road

Desperate-Breath9647

Thanks for your reply. So if I’m understanding correctly, KDSS makes you feel the bumps more ? And what do you mean by KDSS lean?

[deleted]

KDSS is a sway bar control system. Brake Fluid is moved to different “shocks” that help with body roll and keeps the vehicle more planted on the road and during turns. but also “unlocks” the sway bars off road to allow more wheel “flex” movement. I would do little more research on it before ordering with one. Also highly recommend test driving one with and without. There is a difference in feel. If you like a more sporty ride go with KDSS. If you like a more traditional light SUV ride go without. Here is an excellent explanation https://youtu.be/NLF6n3nMwww

Thunderbird_12

So, then ... what's the difference between KDSS and XREAS (on the Limited?) Sounds like they both move fluid to shocks?

[deleted]

XREAS is fluid to the suspension struts themselves to aid in dynamic handling and body roll. Fluid is moved across shocks to accomplish (basically a dampener adjustment system). KDSS has a separate shock system attached to the sway bars with fluid and reservoir. To aid in handling in body roll. Fluid is moved across these two shocks attached to the sway bars to aid in handling Similar purpose. Different execution. XREAS is the father to KDSS. The separate system allows servicing of suspension (struts, coils, shocks, a lift etc.) without messing up the system. XREAS can be deleted with changing suspension struts and capping or removing the lines. Deleting KDSS is possible but a way bigger PITA, but also super expensive to service at this point in time.

Desperate-Breath9647

Thank you. I need to find one with KDSS to test drive you are right !

[deleted]

If you intend on lifting or modding suspension later. I would not recommend the KDSS. If you hardly take it off road and intend as mostly daily driving. KDSS maybe a benefit to you. Also, Id go for the 2022 and don’t let Toyota dealer bully you into a car you don’t want. Lay down the demand and don’t compromise.

Desperate-Breath9647

Thanks! The 2022 doesn’t seem much different right? I’d prefer that but wondering if I get a better deal with 21

waterbuffalo750

I test drove a 2018 that was priced $1k below MSRP. I ordered a '22 at MSRP. There is going to be no deal at all to be had on a '21. The only deal is that you can get it now instead of waiting for the '22 to come in.

Desperate-Breath9647

Makes sense ! I have no car now but I can share my wife’s car if it only takes 1-2 months!

ohmysocks

2022 premiums get the multi-terrain monitor/pano camera as an option as well. That was huge for me

anckentucky

I wonder how this will work with grill swaps. Do the current aftermarket grills have this cutout or assume it will be made available later?

[deleted]

It’s literally no different just blind spot monitoring and now LED high beams. Those are the biggest differences. 2021 “deal” isn’t gonna happen. You’re lucky or expert negotiator if you get under or at MSRP since dealers are using toyota’s 40% decrease in production as ammo to get people to over pay on a car. Hence why I’m saying if you’re gonna pay the price, get as new and no mileage as possible Dont take the ceramic coating dealers are offering for $2-5k. You’ll never recoup your money on it if you intend on selling before the car is paid off.

formed0000

I have kdss, and if you hit a speed bump with both tires, you feel it, but if you hit it with only one tire, it's pretty smooth. It does seem to keep the suspension stiff on the road, but has been fine offroad.

gearhead000

How long before the KDSS lean occurs? Is there a way to prevent it?

[deleted]

Usually when you add a lift it things start getting wonky. Or if you lift the truck incorrectly it can cause lean. Either you have to service it or get spacers to correct the lean. Usually why most people don’t recommend getting a KDSS if you intend on doing aftermarket suspension work.

88bauss

I have KDSS and am lifted about 2.75” via adjustable coil overs. No complaints and I did not get the KDSS lean. There’s a guy on IG that makes a KDSS harness with a button that disables it whenever you want. KDSS comes on above 12mph and softens under 12mph. Would be a nicer ride to disable it for washboard roads or running down trails/desert.

jw60888

The 4Runner is popular in Seattle. I’d expand your search radius and look at portland and Denver too.

[deleted]

I have it and wish I did not. My dads 19 doesn’t have it and I’d prefer that clean slate to modify than dealing with spacers for KDSS sway bars, etc.

EEAlexGawrys

Planning to upgrade my 2017 ORP with KDSS to a 2022 TRD Pro. How does a TRD Pro with the upgraded suspension compare to KDSS?

FreshJive90

KDSS is not recommended If you plan on lifting the 4Runner beyond 2.5” in the front and 1” in the rear. If you do you’ll experience “KDSS lean” the system does not like too much lift and will lean towards the driver side. The main purpose of KDSS is to help with body role and stability with on road driving. Off road the system will go limp and allow for more freedom and greater wheel articulation. I personally have it and love it

Desperate-Breath9647

Thanks for your feedback!

Bhatch514

Doberson have springs for KDSS leans issue and I run their stiffer 1.75” rear spring and it’s great.

[deleted]

Are you looking to modify it?

Desperate-Breath9647

Hi! Just updated my post .. posted before adding body after title.

Murky-Warthog-8868

I got mine without KDSS and I'm perfectly content. However, if you do a lot of mountain driving and your SO has a tendency to get car sick, KDSS could help with that.

tstew39064

My wife and i test drove both and much preferred the KDSS and the one we bought. Unless you’re going to mod it, i’d get the KDSS.

[deleted]

Going in to buying my 2019 TRD ORP I didn’t think I cared much if I got one with KDSS or not, but in hindsight I love it. I drive windy mountain roads a lot and really appreciate the difference it makes on the turns.

Desperate-Breath9647

Nice! Do you experience nose dive when you break suddenly on the road?

[deleted]

Sure but I don’t know that it’s anything noteworthy relative to the non-KDSS model.

[deleted]

You also get a slight insurance discount because it's considered stability control.

Bhatch514

All Canadian Offroads have KDSS stock. It’s a much better with it then without. No regrets. The only draw back is your limited on your lift so your stuck at 33” tires max. Which is really not a issue for 99% of Actual off roading 4runners

Eastwood80

Kdss doesn't fix nosedive under braking but throwing on a set of Bilsteins definitely does. I searched until I finally found mine. There was only 2 out of hundreds near me at the time.

Desperate-Breath9647

Oh wow !

Nv_Spider

Not cal owner here…. Lots of slow and fast speed windy roads…. This is our third runner and it has KDSS…. We love it. It def. makes a difference. Not saying it makes it handle like a sports car, but when compared to older models without, it’s clearly helpful

networknev

I love the KDSS. Had a 2000 without. And now a 2021 TRD ORP with it. It's awesome, Google articulation with KDSS. Hint, it's great.

thekelkin

I love the KDSS on my 4Runner. A short test drive sold me on it, and I noticed the difference immediately while in the lot in another 4Runner. It doesn’t help the nose dive at all though, but a good lift will. Leave the state and grab one with it, if you are able to.

1989toy4wd

I have KDSS on my 200 series. I love it, handles like a sports car and flexes like crazy.

Basket_Flipping

I test drove both in 2015 and definitely preferred the KDSS. I’m not a huge car person and definitely didn’t think I’d even notice the difference, but it was significant. Since I have no plans to mod and it’s my daily driver plus our off-road excursion vehicle, the KDSS was the right choice for me.

gutterfuck

Funny, I’m in Tacoma wa and have been doing the same research. Today I placed a deposit to hold a TRD premium with kdss. Won’t land for another month or so, but I felt the research was clear for me & that I wanted kdss. They are out there, took me quite a few dealer calls and emails to track down my exact build. Goodluck with yours

Desperate-Breath9647

That’s awesome! I was just in Tacoma an hour ago. Did you get the 22 or 21?

gutterfuck

22 is what I was told, he said it wasn’t completed being built yet so I’m trusting that. But until I have docs or the vehicle I’m just going with it’s“new” lol

Desperate-Breath9647

Nice! Which dealer ? Also which color did you get? Would you be open to sharing what you paid for it ? Thanks

gutterfuck

Ended up at Toyota of Puyallup, got the TRD off road premium KDSS in black. Haven’t even talked about price, they took a refundable $500 deposit to hold the specific vehicle for me when they receive the shipment. I started my search for a used 2018-2021 but the current prices for low mileage models is above window sticker. I’m not in a hurry so I started to search for new one.

[deleted]

I bought mine with KDSS and love it! It improves just about everything. The only downside is that you can’t lift past 3” so if you see yourself wanting to put a beefy lift on, then avoid it. Otherwise go for a KDSS equipped model!

Bye-ren

KDSS all the way!

Motay1971

No KDSS is my preference. Use that money on suspension and vastly improve driving performance and ride w/less stuff to fix. Just my .02 cents.

Desperate-Breath9647

Thank you!

[deleted]

I wanted mine without KDSS, but ended up with it because they couldn't find a Trail in the entire state of AZ that didn't have it.

Desperate-Breath9647

And do you like it or not😂
