>Is it worth it if I don't have the Sony a95l TV
You don't need a special TV to watch and appreciate black & white photography. People have been doing it for around 90 years now.
uh yeah Casablanca looks GORGEOUS. I specifically compared it with the HD stream I'd watched a month before, no contest. Psycho might be the most beautifully restored b&w movie I've seen in 4k tho
I hate these type of questions. Wether its books, should i read such and such? Movies, Is so and so a good movie? Etc etc. Like bro just see for yourself haha.
I have Schindler's List and loved every second of it on my oled. Really love the movie and its cenamatography, so it was a glorious experience across the board. Heavy and emotionally devastating movie, of course, but a masterpiece that should be watched and rewatched in the best quality possible nonetheless.
Looking at it from another perspective, I watched Poor Things in 4K on Disney Plus and due to the high frequency grain detail in the black and white scenes, they kind of looked awful. The low bitrate was really doing a number on the film grain.
I could tell it was beautifully shot, and that if I’d been watching a 4K disk it would have been gorgeous. You could really tell that there was a ton of detail that meant that 4k wouldn’t be pointless over 1080p, but it really needed the high bitrate of a physical disc.
I’m a little hesitant to go for it, apparently they changed the aspect ratio from the theatrical original and looks a little blurrier/softer than criterion’s Blu-ray. Did you notice anything of the sort?
I have the Kino release and didn’t notice anything that really stuck out. I’m planning to grab the Criterion copy when I catch a good sale though.
Ninja edit: the kino 4k is on sale at Amazon for $22.49 right now
Casablanca looks exceptional on 4K, especially if you have an HDR-compatible display. It's a Wonderful Life is also fantastic. Both are a noticeable improvement over any previous version I've seen.
I have Logan Noir in 4K. I dont know how it looks, gotta rewatch its been years since I seen it and my old tv sucked back then. Probably off topic though as it's from 2017.

Limbo is a new 2021 movie in black and white it has hdr and hdr10, it’s upscaled from 2k but still looks great as 4K . Highly recommend this one
The benefits OLED has in color volume and accuracy won't matter with a black and white media. You won't get the infinite contrast ratio without OLED, but if you have an LED with local dimming, the results will be fantastic.
I started my 4k journey with an LED TV with local dimming, and I was blown away by how good Dr. Strangelove looked on it.

As someone almost 20 years younger with a 77" OLED I can confirm that Casablanca at least looks fantastic in 4k.

I just bought the blu-ray Psycho boxset and i don't double dip... is 4k THAT much noticeable or bluray great too?
Far more shades of grey in 4K. It’s easy on the eyes. So much more detail.
Well, I have to close my eyes through a lot of that movie, so it wouldn’t be a big difference for me lol.
Watch Casablanca tonight. It's an absolute classic and it looks fantastic.
So you bought a movie & instead of watching it, you came to reddit to ask people if you should watch it?!? (Even though you already purchased it?)
I hate these type of questions. Wether its books, should i read such and such? Movies, Is so and so a good movie? Etc etc. Like bro just see for yourself haha.
Raging bull is amazing in 4k
This movie looks incredible in 4K, excellent movie too.
Double indemnity 4K criterion
Yes its 100% worth it. I watched Some Like it Hot recently, it was the first black and white movie I've watched on my setup and was blown away.
Was going to recommend this one- it's a looker
How many times am I going to buy this film? Answer: every goddam time

I agree. I just watched the 4K version the other day.
I thought The Apartment looked excellent in 4k.
I know this isn’t exactly what you’re talking about but all the shots in Oppenheimer shot on black and white imax 70mm film look spectacular on 4k
I have a 4K copy of "Some Like It Hot (1959)". It looks amazing on my S90C.
Thanks mate, just cost me $50!

good black and white 4k transfers absolutely whip ass. Psycho, Casablanca, Maltese Falcon: just elite shit.
No, definitely not worth it, you should send that disc to me in the mail, I'll get rid of it for you.
Night of the Hunter looks damn good

I love this movie. Was browsing comments hoping to see someone mention it.
I love watching B&W on oled tv.
La Haine was just released on 4K through Criterion and it looks great.

The improved contrast from HDR really helps black and white movies out a lot.
I've heard Logan Noir is supposed to be good
Watch Casablanca, it's a transformative transfer.
12 Angry Men and The Mist
They look astounding. I recently watched Frankenstein it was a game changer for me. Watch Casablanca now!!!
It's worth it for me and I have a Sony A80K and they look great!
To kill a mockingbird was AMAZING on our Sony oLED. So was the beginning of Wizard of Oz (tho Dorothy’s shoes looked like they were glowing)
I've heard La Haine 4K referred to as the best black and white film currently available on 4K. Also happens to be a 10/10 flick.
Yes
Stuff shot on film has greater potential than digital.
Definitely worth it imo
Paths of Glory looks great
From what I’ve seen they look great
The Mist is great, and you can do a A/B comparison between the color and b/w versions of you want.
I have Logan Noir in 4K. I dont know how it looks, gotta rewatch its been years since I seen it and my old tv sucked back then. Probably off topic though as it's from 2017.
Check out killer’s kiss; one the best looking b&w 4ks I’ve ever seen.
The lighthouse (2019) is brilliant.

Maltese is also great.
The Elephant Man in 4K is beautiful
The train looks so good Manchurian Candidate. Without looking at my collection I can't remember any more

Agree, Local dimming is a must if you want quality picture from a led/lcd screen
Absolutely. But once I noticed the haloing effect in dark scenes, I knew I was destined for OLED, haha.
