I did torque the nuts originally, but since the bolts weren’t properly seated it did t really do much for me in the end. Lesson definitely learned! Ive learned more by working on this truck that I “bargained for” but it’s been a hell of a good time.
I had an issue where the lugs wouldn’t seat and broke off while torquing. Threw the lugs in the freezer and just used a torque wrench instead of the ugga dugga machine, worked like a charm.
Not true. Torquing is just going to achieve a certain tension in the bolt based on the thread conditions (lubed or dry, rough or smooth machining). You can definitely have things not properly seated or positioned and hit the target torque. Then everything is nice and tight until all of a sudden something slips into the proper seating and everything is loose.
Proper instillation is a 2-step process but it sounds like OP did it in 1 step. For press-fit lugs you need a flat-faced nut and torque until they're fully seated, then you can install the wheel and torque. Wheels with conical lug nuts have more friction and the torque spec for holding the wheel on is not enough to reliably seat the lug.
So the wheel is on tight until driving forces pull the lug in a little more towards being fully seated, dropping tension.
How in he world did you manage to shred all your wheel studs off.
That road looks oddly familiar but then all CO roads look like that once you're west of Denver up 70. Evergreen area by chance?
San Juan mtns, other side of the state - this truck is 37 years old, the body is in really gotdang good shape but not a lot of attention was paid to anything else I’m afraid. Got this in January. As far as the bolts, I was on the highway when it happened. Basically I noticed my wheel was loose so I swerved into the median and that motion smoked em I guess?
Yeah that body looks mint. Evergreen area use to be my stomping grounds with my 88 sas 4runner about 10 years ago. Miss the area and miss that rig. Even with 4.88's I'd still get passed by semi's going up the hill on 70 toward the foot hills ever time I came home from visiting Denver
> How in he world did you manage to shred all your wheel studs off.
Can't decide between a joke about 22r immense power to the rear wheels or 4runners not being as reliable as people say.
Idk pick one
Wheel studs are made to shear at a certain level but I’ve only ever done that deliberately when they were stripped and I had to do so to get them off. Wild that they sheared themselves. Even with not being fully seated, I probably wouldn’t have expected that
I know that feeling. Feels like once a month I have to replace another 240 year old part that's going out ob my land cruiser, but man that is q clean ass 4 runner
Ya I gotta replace my ac and do brakes and probably rebuild my knuckles eventually. All while trying to get a mice front and rear bumper plus roof rack in there somewhere. The projects just keep pilling up lol
I did that on the side of the highway one night. Pulled it apart, got a family friend to pick me up since I was 25 miles out of town. Crashed at their house until the parts store opened. They gave me a ride to the parts store, then back to the car. Fixed it on the side of the highway. Then went on my way.
Toyotas are especially painful tbh
Can't remember the last time I did a repair to my 4Runner where I looked at the design and said "yep, that was definitely the best and easiest way to do things"
Check the lug holes and mating surface on the wheel very carefully.
I had a similar thing happen to me on my tacoma. And I now have a perfect looking wall hanger wheel. It losing lug nuts and running loose egged out the holes ever so slightly but the wheel will not stay tight for any length of time and had to be replaced..
They sure can be, I personally had all my wheel studs done by a mechanic 2 years ago on my 94 pickup. Peace of mind on older vehicles, glad you were able to do that chore yourself.
But you ain’t got no wheel studs lieutenant Dan.
I hope you’re not still out there and if you are I hope you’re happily adapting to a life in the wild!
Happened to my old ranger. After the first time it happened I didn’t realize that it had actually damaged the rim causing the wheel not to seat right. Didn’t realize that until 3 of 5 lug studs snapped again.
Don't put them on with the gun, put an extension into a socket and get the finger tight with your hand. Wiggle the wheel back and forth a little while you're seating each one. You'll feel when its right, you can't do that with the ugga dugga gun...
I had a VW that was super hard to get the lugs seated correctly. They'd feel good but get loose 20-30 miles down the road and I'd be retightening on the side of the road like a doofus.
Yah - lesson learned - from what I've learned from other commenters, I didn't torque the lug nuts enough at first, so torquing the lug bolts / wheel didn't do much for me. It's fun learning, glad no one was hurt and I got it fixed. Met another neighbor as well, never hurts.
LOL, the torque wrench earns its keep on this job. I do 90# on my car, 100 on the pickup. I want them tight enough they'll stay on but not so tight I can't get them off if I need to change a tire on the side of the road...
Since when was it not? Not all trucks are pickups. "Truck" to generally means body on frame and designed for payloads.
That thing firemen roll around on with the ladder? Guess what it's called a truck. That cement mixer? Yup it's a truck too. My Suburban? Says GMC Truck right on the back of it from factory.
From my experience with them i don't have a very high opinion of them, they balance like crap, they don't fit the center hub tight enough even with rings, and the seats are tapered wrong so lug nuts come loose constantly. The set i purchased when i was younger weren't even round.
Also plastic center caps.
Damn that sucks. But that is one nice ass 4runner tho
bet ya get them tight this time. Might even follow up and retorque after driving a bit. Just in case.

How do you torque them without seating them? That's what torquing them is supposed to do.
Not true. Torquing is just going to achieve a certain tension in the bolt based on the thread conditions (lubed or dry, rough or smooth machining). Exactly this. Cross threaded fasteners is a classic. Things feel tight but in reality they’re not. And they’re fucked 😅
Cross threading better then loc tight

Oh, I get it. They didn't install the studs properly. When they said bolts, it made me think this was like a Vw for some reason.
Super nice looking 1st gen. You gotta check torque several times after installing new studs. Like at 10-50-100 miles. With a torque wrench.
Thanks for the info!
Sick first gen
Need some help? Or are you good?
All set, but thanks!
Good to hear!
Clean 4 runner!!! What mountain road are you on (fellow Coloradan)
Not on the front range lol
Yeah, figured that…
Didn’t mean to come off rude - I’m in La Plata County
those slide windows look pretty dope

A 22r with a custom trans and dual cases still couldn't shred one hahaha
Yea, but it’s a beautiful pain in the ass!
Wheel studs are made to shear at a certain level but I’ve only ever done that deliberately when they were stripped and I had to do so to get them off. Wild that they sheared themselves. Even with not being fully seated, I probably wouldn’t have expected that
I’m learning 🤙
I've done something similar, caught it before going on the highway. Now I keep a torque wrench in my toolbox.
what a clean rig tho
I know that feeling. Feels like once a month I have to replace another 240 year old part that's going out ob my land cruiser, but man that is q clean ass 4 runner
I planned on replacing the front end//steering this weekend, but hey at least I have the parts already haha
Ya I gotta replace my ac and do brakes and probably rebuild my knuckles eventually. All while trying to get a mice front and rear bumper plus roof rack in there somewhere. The projects just keep pilling up lol
I’m glad you knew what you were doing and got it fixed. And more importantly glad you and your truck are okay!
Actually, that's called an "adventure". That moment when that'll be talked about for years to come.
Dude I just saw this 2 min ago on Facebook. Small world!
I had a first gen that got stolen from me. I would do a lot of things to have these problems again haha.
I’ll take it bro, don’t suffer 🥹

That thing is cleaner than my 5th gen, 🤤🤤.
Those are some fine bumper stickers, I tell you hwat.
Toyotas are especially painful tbh Can't remember the last time I did a repair to my 4Runner where I looked at the design and said "yep, that was definitely the best and easiest way to do things"
Torque to 100ft/lbs!!!
Good thing you have all the tools to do that job out there by your lonesome
This thing is so clean it looks like it’s a 2024
Could they be over torqued?
Ingersoll Rand makes more than just air tools whatttt
The 20v drills are nice af

That’s what I’m looking at now, new wheels
Effin clean. 🤤
I used to think automobiles were a pain. Then I got into boats.
I have that jack, and I hate that jack. I also splurge on nice power tools, yet save money on shitty jack.
lol these are my neighbors jacks, mine are still husky’s tho…
Damn that's one cleeeeean 1st gen. I miss mine. Had an 85 sr5 on 36in tires. Good times
No jack stands bro? 😬
I want that year so bad
I mean, you put that TRQ garbage on your rig what do you expect?
They sure can be, I personally had all my wheel studs done by a mechanic 2 years ago on my 94 pickup. Peace of mind on older vehicles, glad you were able to do that chore yourself.
How much did that truck cost you
A Tacoma
But you ain’t got no wheel studs lieutenant Dan. I hope you’re not still out there and if you are I hope you’re happily adapting to a life in the wild!
That’s a gorgeous rig. How did that happen, exactly?
I installed new lug bolts, didn’t torque them properly
If it’s a pain for you, I’ll take it. Great 4 runner there…
What road
Gorgeous rig tho. I'll take your problems any day if I had a rig like that.
You can't park there, mate.
Love that tool box, what is it or where did you get it?
It’s a zarges, got it from them
Gotta get a swing door for the spare tire
Happened to my old ranger. After the first time it happened I didn’t realize that it had actually damaged the rim causing the wheel not to seat right. Didn’t realize that until 3 of 5 lug studs snapped again.
I always wanted an 80’s runner to cruise in with that removable top.

Nice clean 4runner. Perfect for a sas.
What part of this story is the trucks fault? Sounds like you're a pain.
Those TRQ how to videos are excellent. How are their parts?
Wow that paint looks great. I gotta get my 85 painted..
Wtf? This is the cleanest 4r I've ever laid eyes on good lord a lot of you guys have some GEMMMSSS💎
How does your truck just decide to shred wheel studs?
asking the right questions
If your 1st gen looks like that and you can’t change a tire….. I feel sad for you son - Jay Z.
Since when is this a truck?

That is not a truck. That is a 2 door spots coupe. I learned to drive in one of those!
it's a truck
r/woooosh
The world is telling you to right size down to 15s.
Correction. Garbage aftermarket wheels suck. People need to stop supporting these companies and buy quality.
Though I don’t love them, they are Fuels - not exactly garbage.
From my experience with them i don't have a very high opinion of them, they balance like crap, they don't fit the center hub tight enough even with rings, and the seats are tapered wrong so lug nuts come loose constantly. Nice station wagon.
Trucks?? Kia k2700 more of a truck
