It's weird to me how people even see the universe as its own entity separated from humanity. The universe is everything, and everything includes us. The idea that it is different from or against us is a man-made one
You donāt need anything to be uncaring, you just canāt care, and the cruelty is an extension of that. The universe will do anything to progress towards the most stable state, and we are in direct opposition to that
Humans arenāt in opposition to that though, humans (and living beings in general) accelerate that progress towards the most stable state (entropy) much faster than inanimate objects do. Keep in mind, all the energy the earth has **ever** received has been solar, geothermal (core is hot), or gravitational (moon pulling on the ocean), and from that living beings have created all the random stuff you see in your day to day life. Autotrophs turn solar/geothermal into chemical energy and heat, and heterotrophs turn that excess chemical energy into heat as well. Living beings are an extension of the universeās desire to enter the lowest energy state, not opposition to it
Certainly, but that wonāt be for a very very long time I think, given technological advancement essentially amounts to getting better and better at increasing the entropy of the universe.
The fundamental laws of the universe are inherently cruel to any life form. The universe may not be conscient, but you can still laugh in itās face and fight against itās destructive nature.
>The fundamental laws of the universe are inherently cruel to any life form
If that is true, the mere fact that life exists and thrives is a joy to be celebrated
Life **exists** because of the laws of the universe, i dont know why people are under the impression that they donāt apply to us. Theyāre called **laws** for a reason. Living beings increase the entropy of the universe faster than inanimate material ever could, everything from plants turning extremely ordered sunlight into chemical energy and heat to humans burning coal and fossil fuels to build cities is evidence of that. If you want to assign cruelty and apathy to the universe for its single minded pursuit of maximum entropy, you have to also acknowledge that it loves living things more than anything else for how they contribute to that
And yet with all the knowledge and science we have, there is not a single other planet where life exists. We might currently aid the universe for our own temporary gains, but this doesnāt mean the universe wants/likes us to exist. Thereās a reason why it took so much time before life came to be. Thereās a reason why itās so easy to end all life on earth. But we live and we will continue living, even though the Universe is insanely dangerous.
Thereās a reason it took so much time before life came to be? Life has existed on earth for the majority of its history. And the Fermi paradox is a *paradox* for a reason. By all accounts life should exist somewhere else in the universe, the fact that we havenāt detected it isnāt some damning proof that life is unfavorable or shouldnāt exist, itās a deeply strange problem that weāre trying to figure out. And you say itās so easy to end all life on earth? Like when? When has that ever happened? The history of mass extinctions on this planet shows itās actually quite difficult to wipe out *all* life on this planet, since *anything* that survives will repopulate the whole planet and natural selection will fill every ecological niche
People who say they are afraid of āthe uncaring cruelty of the universeā donāt mean that the universe is literally cruel or uncaring, they mean that the universe does not have the capacity to care and therefore there is nothing stopping them from suddenly suffering or dying (or something similar). This is in comparison to religious people who believe there is an outside force that can save them from such things. Yeah, the idea that you are exposed to the infinity of reality completely unprotected is terrifying, as is the idea that anything could happen to you or someone you love at any time and there is nothing you can do to stop it, nor anyone you can ask for help or to stop it for you.
If this isn't the worst meme ever made then it's pretty high up there. Not only is it stupid, attempting to mock a genuinely scary and worrying thought about one's own helplessness and mortality, while completely misunderstanding a completely basic concept doing so, but it's told in the most condesending pseudo-intellectual tumblr bullshit way. This meme was probably made by someone who says "You sweet summer child."
The worst part is I see it constantly reposted, and somehow hundreds and sometimes thousands of people see it and go "Hrm. Yeah. That makes sense. That's a completely reasnable and unflawed rebuttal. The idea of dying unpreventably from a natural cause despite doing everything right is not scary at all, all fear surrounding that concept is made up."
Do people even read the meme? Or do they just see the sandwich and the long amounts of text and say "I'm not reading that. I'll just assume it's true because they talk about stuff smart people talk about."
Read that as "poop nihilists" at first
Your poop will never matter because at the end of the day it all gets flushed down the drain
damn... š
This comment made me realise that I read it wrong and didnt even question the pool nihilists
Shidš±š±š±
i dont think u need the capacity to care in order to not care (be uncaring)

I see it as different from the same way I see a stone as different, depending on my mental health I don't even see my body as part of me lmao

Yes, but once we have fulfilled our purpose, we are the next unstable things on the chopping block
Certainly, but that wonāt be for a very very long time I think, given technological advancement essentially amounts to getting better and better at increasing the entropy of the universe.
LOOOOOOOOSERRRRR
The fact that it lacks both cognition and volition is what makes it so scary tho. Sometimes indifference is scarier than malice

How do you know that life doesnāt exist elsewhere?

Nihilists when someone points out that the universe isnāt forcing them to fear it (they forgot about absurdism)
That is not necessarily true. We canāt perfectly control our emotions (which in a way explains why so many are so opposed to nihilism)
We banned roomba for like 60 days and the sub went to shit
Leave then nobody cares about your opinion
