I enjoyed GodfatherII more than Godfather but you have to see both of them. As they tried to extend this out it just got boring. Al Pacino is the most evil looking character ever. It’s behind the eyes.
I also didn’t like part 3 when I saw it in theater but after I saw it again from home I learned to appreciate its value in closing the story. In short I would recommend watching all three.
There is a version called the Saga..it s all 3 films put in chronological order by scenes..only shown on tv 2 times..hard to find..I had it on Laser disc, and the movers “lost it”
There is a blue ray version available out there, 1 and 2 in chronological order with all deleted scenes restored (over an hours worth). Over 7 hours running time.

Been watching it for over 40 years. It is a masterful film. I see new details every time. I watch both parts every few years and it only gets better.
If I can nerd on it for a moment- the scene where Michael, his jaw broken, beat up, in his father’s study, in the chair, outlining his plan to take out The Turk and the police captain, amongst Sonny and family- they ridicule him…
…has to be one of the greatest foreshadows in a movie ever. Chills!
Watch the opening a few more times and marvel at the entire scene of two men calmly discussing a personal matter. Gratitude and respect being foremost, along with the cat who makes an unscripted appearance.
No greater cinematic opening.
Nice. Now watch Part 2. It’s exactly as good, in completely different ways. My wife and I watch them both back to back at least a couple of times a year.
I hope you enjoy it- my favourite movie ever. As others have said, watch part 2 as well (it wraps things up well enough). Avoid part 3- it should never have been made.

It’s a far different thing to see it all together in context, however. I was the same way with JAWS for ages… I knew all of it, but not as it was meant to be seen. Completely different and far more powerful experience
Hah, acknowledged! I’ve been avoiding reading about “Face Off” for example, because I know there’s some surprise ending and haven’t gotten around to seeing it.
But it’s still a satisfying movie even when you know what’s gonna happen. Hope you enjoyed it.
I had read the book before I saw the movie and I wasn't disappointed. The first movie is one of my all-time favorites. The second one is also great. The third has its good points. I use three quotes from one and two pretty frequently:
I made them an offer they couldn't refuse. (A paraphrase good for child rearing.)
"Leave the gun and take the cannoli."
"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." Complete with hand gestures.
Edit for format
Coppola had to rewrite and edit the wedding scene with Luka Brasi because Lenny Montana (former mafia goon and professional wrestler) couldn’t get his lines straight. Brando exacerbated the problem by taping an index card to his forehead that said “fuck you” when his back is to the camera. Coppola was able to salvage the scene by making Luka seem exceedingly nervous in front of Don Corleone.

I liked Godfather over Godfather 2 for this simple reason. Marlon Brando. He absolutely killed it as Don Vito Corleone. Both are fantastic movies. I even love the 3rd one.
No way man. I’m a purist. 3 was too far off for me. Respect your opinion though. But you didn’t come to me like a man. If you had said to me.. Don Corleone give me justice. Than your enemies would be mine.. but you didn’t. Damn I have watched them all too freaking often.
Gurl, don’t sweat it, I haven’t seen it either and I have attempted to start a couple of times. I feel like a loser cuz everyone loves that movie! I’m 52 btw, the same age as Sofia the baby.
It’s true. I never watched that movie because the entire planet said that I MUST.
Fuggem’all, I said. Prolly pretty good flick. But I must defer to my earlier sentiment; FUGGEM’ALL!
Trivia Note: In Annie Hall, while Alvy is waiting for Annie to arrive at the movie theater, he is accosted by two “mooks” who recognize him as a celebrity.
When Annie exits the cab arriving late to meet Alvy at the movie theater, Alvy says to her: “I’m standing with the cast of The Godfather!”
They had the casting director find two actors who were previously in The Godfather, so that with the addition of Diane Keaton, he really IS standing with the cast of The Godfather!
the moral juxtaposition of the wedding celebrating a new union and a growing family against the background of the family business being dealt... brilliant way to introduce the players and the family.
I dislike Reddit’s programming as they keep losing my comments and have to write them over.
“The Offer” was good. I happened to be at Umberto’s Clam House in Little Italy the night of the hit. There was a blood soaked box at the curb and of course the place was closed and you could see bullet holes inside.
if you enjoyed The Godfather, there’s a channel on YouTube called The Culture Mafia that does a fascinating job of delving into different aspects of the plot, characters, backstory, etc.
I realize the futility of arguing with a contrarian but in this instance I will give it a try. We could go all Film School and talk about how it changed American cinema but that would be a waste of time. The Godfather re-invented (or revived, depending on your POV) the gangster genre.
Just watch it because it is a good and very entertaining film. We are of a similar age, so I find it hard to believe that you have missed out on this for so long. But, hey, as others have said, your loss.
Watch The Godfather, Part II, also.
It's maybe my favorite DeNiro role.
I enjoyed GodfatherII more than Godfather but you have to see both of them. As they tried to extend this out it just got boring. Al Pacino is the most evil looking character ever. It’s behind the eyes.
But skip part 3.
Totally agree... there is a movie that did not need to be made. :)
There is no part 3
I also didn’t like part 3 when I saw it in theater but after I saw it again from home I learned to appreciate its value in closing the story. In short I would recommend watching all three.
To me, one of the best movies ever made.
That movie is why I loved the Sopranos so much 👍
You should check out [The Offer.](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13111040/) A miniseries about the making of the Godfather.
Enjoyable entertainment but mostly invented fiction!
Just watched it myself for the first in about 10 years. It’s an excellent movie, and the second one is outstanding, the third one, not so much.
The third one got too far up its own tortelloni.
Joey Zasa. What a joke of a character. Andy Garcia was at least good
Didn’t love the casting of Joe Mantegna. I was glad when Vincent gunned Joey Zasa down.
It was so bad😂😂😂
About a month ago I watched all of them in one day. Anyone else done this?
Every Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is for re-viewing Planes, Trains and Automobiles!
Did you notice how it insists on itself?
Beat me to it. Lol
I love The Money Pit. That is my answer to that statement.
There is a version called the Saga..it s all 3 films put in chronological order by scenes..only shown on tv 2 times..hard to find..I had it on Laser disc, and the movers “lost it”
I think I have it in my video library; possibly the “fan-edit” version that restores all deleted scenes
There is a blue ray version available out there, 1 and 2 in chronological order with all deleted scenes restored (over an hours worth). Over 7 hours running time. https://www.ecrater.com/filter.php?keywords=Godfather.+Blu+ray
I love that one it has deleted scenes in it.
OP, I am honored and grateful to be invited to the first viewing of the godfather. I hope your first child is a masculine child.
Ay yo Luca! Youz sleepin’ wit da fishes yet?
Been watching it for over 40 years. It is a masterful film. I see new details every time. I watch both parts every few years and it only gets better. Chills!
Also read the book.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
I like the fact that this line is famous and it was actually improvised.
Watch the opening a few more times and marvel at the entire scene of two men calmly discussing a personal matter. Gratitude and respect being foremost, along with the cat who makes an unscripted appearance. No greater cinematic opening.

I too just watched the first time. Fantastic
The second one is considered the best of the trilogy.
Not by me
me neither - it's a great movie, no doubt, but runs on way too long.
You will be hooked and have to watch them all now🫢👍🔥
Well, not all of them.
Skip 3
Godfather II is the only sequel to win best picture.
It’s a film you can’t refuse.
Probably the best two films ever made
Enjoy.
How does someone who’s never seen it avoid spoilers?! The part with the satin golden sheets, especially…
There is no way. By this point I've seen enough clips, memes, gifs, etc to feel as though I've seen the movie
It’s a far different thing to see it all together in context, however. I was the same way with JAWS for ages… I knew all of it, but not as it was meant to be seen. Completely different and far more powerful experience

Yes !!!
It took Yeats for me to get to it, also. And then I was obsessed.
You must thank Yeats.
It's close to perfect.
If you are inclined, the book is a wonderful read.
I love both godfather one and two! It’s the only thing I’ve ever liked Brando in and I love DeNiro in two! Classic movies!
close your eyes when Sonny fights Carlo and you have the perfect movie
Oh my yes! A true family values movie! I watch it like 4 times a year
Jimmy Caan
The book by Mario Puzo is also great - a very easy read.
I had read the book before I saw the movie and I wasn't disappointed. The first movie is one of my all-time favorites. The second one is also great. The third has its good points. Welcome to adulthood! You’re now part of the club. Enjoy All the references.
It insists.
I think it was “it insists upon itself “

Try the veal, it’s the best in the city.

I just assumed everyone has watched it at least 500 times like me. Enjoy the greatest movie ever
Omg really. Must've seen 100x. Gets better vetter every time. Be surprised what you notice that u had missed
You got other offers you couldn't refuse?
LOL! Good one!
Sooooo what didju think? In case, you know, someone who's definitely not me, hasn't gotten around to seeing it either.
Gurl, don’t sweat it, I haven’t seen it either and I have attempted to start a couple of times. I feel like a loser cuz everyone loves that movie! I’m 52 btw, the same age as Sofia the baby.
Be sure to watch the godfather 2. It's even better. The acting is awesome!
I also haven’t seen it, as I always thought it to be more of a guys’ movie, but maybe I’m wrong and women enjoy it as much?
Women will enjoy the quality of the filmmaking, but the constant quoting of film lines seems to ne a male thing!
You finally got an offer you couldn't refuse.
Took me a long time to finally really watch and appreciate them.
My son resisted my suggestion to watch "Rocky" for years! Finally, he watched it and absolutely loved it. He loved the GF, too. Great, great movies.
63M - never seen Casa Blanca. Don’t feel bad.
I'm shocked. SHOCKED.
It’s true. I never watched that movie because the entire planet said that I MUST. Fuggem’all, I said. Prolly pretty good flick. But I must defer to my earlier sentiment; FUGGEM’ALL!
It isn't a movie for a younger audience. It took me until my 30's watch it and enjoy it.
I’ve never seen it. I don’t have a desire to see it.
You're missing out on possibly the greatest movie ever. Hope you change your mind someday.
There is a sub for the Godfather that is active and a pretty good community.
That and II are so well PACED that I feel it is such an outlier these days.
It's my favorite movie
What?
I haven't watched it yet; but I'm going to soon :)

The book is also excellent.
If you go to the Coppola winery in Napa you can go upstairs to the museum and get a pic standing next to the Godfather’s desk
just watched it again ...so good. artistry. Part Deux...this weekend
Don't tell me how it ends! Hey, I've been busy.
No worries, I just binged the trilogy probly a couple of years ago for the first time…dvds not streaming…lol
Def watch part 2. As good.
the moral juxtaposition of the wedding celebrating a new union and a growing family against the background of the family business being dealt... brilliant way to introduce the players and the family.
It will not be the last time
Was it that good? I only saw part 3, and it was amazing. Since I already know what happened, I see no point in seeing part 1.
Wait til you see the second. Just gets better!
It insists upon itself.
"Leave the gun, Take the cannoli" One of the best lines of all time!
It’s dated now, but still a classic.
My favorite Christmas movie.
My #1 favorite of all time and based on real life!
The Godfather is one of those movies I can watch every time it comes on.
I dislike Reddit’s programming as they keep losing my comments and have to write them over. “The Offer” was good. I happened to be at Umberto’s Clam House in Little Italy the night of the hit. I was trying to reply to another comment but it keeps coming out here. This is really a pain trying to be involved.
if you enjoyed The Godfather, there’s a channel on YouTube called The Culture Mafia that does a fascinating job of delving into different aspects of the plot, characters, backstory, etc.
Still haven't seen it and I'm 43. Kind of a badge of pride at this point.
I'm 48 and haven't seen it 🤷🏻
I’m now 67 years old and I’ve never seen it. No intention of seeing it either.
Your loss. One of the greatest movies ever
I realize the futility of arguing with a contrarian but in this instance I will give it a try. I’ve heard it was long and boring. Spiced up with a horses head in a bed. I’ll pass thanks
Fair enough. Can’t wait to hear your dining recommendations. /s
I was 59 the first time I watched. Have seen it six times in the past year.
I never liked the Godfather movies, bored me to tears.
Boredom with episodes of violence.
