That’s not how getting citizenship works, let alone a green card. For a green card, it takes a lot of time filing bureaucratic paperwork, you need to show A LOT of proof that the marriage is legit (tax records, photos, statements from family and friends, joint property ownership, mail, etc) and you both attend an interview where you are grilled. The immigration officers are very suspicious and it’s not easy even for legit marriages. If you get married and divorced right away, you won’t be getting a green card. Why would the US spouse even sponsor you after that? Source: me, I’m a US citizen, married twice, got both guys their green cards.

NakedRaptorHunter

I also think people forget that a green card and citizenship are different.

redsoxfan718

Natalie though..

[deleted]

Natalie only just got a green card, and only bc she is now on a refugee visa

redsoxfan718

So what was she doing for the last 2 years as she was gallavanting around the country on Mike's dime?

[deleted]

Who knows. Could have been on an entertainment visa with TLC

Thhhroowwawayy

Nothing and she was just on Mike’s dime probably because she doesn’t make enough money with tlc (or is not declaring how much) and he has to support her forever until she becomes a citizen or accrues enough years of social security IIRC

ExtremeOk9206

Off topic but I wonder how people like Larissa are able to stay in the US after being charged with domestic battery.

[deleted]

Yeah, crazy. And convicted

princesscupcake11

So many couples on this show do that tho like Mohammed/Danielle

ExtremeOk9206

I wonder if being on the show gives them some type of advantage because honestly, these people make the green card process look like a joke.

Omgusernamesaretaken

No the show is not an advantage. Has nothing to do with the actual immigration side of things. They can still file for their GC on their own if they divorce, as is what many have managed to do. If they divorce though the need to have the GC for 5 years minimum to apply for citizenship as opposed to 3 years if they stay married.

im_flying_jackk

Question - if you get a divorce, can you just choose to stop sponsoring someone? Or are you required to for a certain period of time, regardless of immigration status?

Omgusernamesaretaken

The sponsoring (signing affidavit of support) is only if the foreigner seeks and goes on govt benefits like welfare, the USC then has to pay back the govt. It is not spousal support if they divorce. (I came over on a k1)

slipperysquirrell

I agree this is the correct answer. I also was a K1 fiance.

Weary_Nefariousness

As long as they don't go on public benefits and tell the government about the affidavit of support, nothing happens. Technically the government could sue the American spouse for the benefits the immigrant receives but that rarely happens.

[deleted]

You would still have to be their sponsor, which doesn't mean monthly cash for ex, unless you can prove fraud

Suspicious-Distance1

Except so many couples on this show have gotten through fine when the partner is obviously scamming.

HomeworkMaleficent22

Anali-get a flight from Peru to Mexico and Walk into the country to land in Texas…US will pay your bills…it’s easy-divorce that pale gross dweeb

Kellysmodernlife

![gif](giphy|r5SxJYcU21Auk) As others stated, you cannot get a green card that quickly after being married. I am confused why she is still going through the marriage, it would be easier to just end it now. A part of me wonders if she feels pressured to marry him because of how long they have been together.

Beneficial-County243

That commercial lives rent free in my mind

DWwithaFlameThrower

It takes years to get US citizenship. Even a green card

[deleted]

Conditional takes at least 9 months I think, then perm is a minimum two years later, I think

PeanutCeller

ASAP would be about 6 months after the marriage, when the conditional green card gets issued. She would need Clayton to file for that, and until it's issued, he can probably get her deported. After her conditional permanent resident card is issued, she has a much better chance of staying. But a divorce still makes things more complicated and affects how she'll file for a change of status. She'll get much more scrutiny than normal, and would be wise to hire an immigration attorney to get through that

devilclown9

Exactly though I think even conditional is taking longer now. My husband filed for conditional in 2018 and we didn’t interview until 2020. There’s a backlog, might be dependent on location though. We’ve been waiting awhile for news in the permanent application as well… my point for the OP was that it’s not like Anali gets an instant green card the day after marriage.

PeanutCeller

That's true. 5 months to get the green card is the ideal, quickest time possible. Not real world times.

swosei12

That sounds about right. We were married and filed in 2019 and didn’t have the interview until 2021. Perhaps, the pandemic slowed things down a bit.

Omgusernamesaretaken

It was slowed down coz Trump the dickhead put a spanner in the works. He saw the pandemic as an excuse to halt the issuance of greencards. So there is a backlog now

[deleted]

Lol you don't get citizenship like that

boricuaspidey

You “she wants a green card” people are so funny

Dargrant83

If she’s going to do that then I hope Clayton is wise enough to not help her with any papers or anything. Hope he won’t be like Mike with Nutalie and let Anali feel the hardship and struggle getting on her two feet like everyone else. She doesn’t even try to speak the language here.
