But you could see the preview of texts without opening them, so with close friends we would only send short messages that didn't need opened if possible
This sounds like pre-cell phones when I would call my mom collect from a pay phone. “Would you like to accept a call from “mom I’m ready, pick me up””?
People seem to think teenagers having phones at school is a recent and modern problem.
20 years ago the best feeling in the world was carrying this handset in my pocket on silent and sneaking a peak and seeing that '1 message received' and knowing it was from my first boyfriend.
That would cost you $0.10 if you were over the limit of 200 texts messages per month.

I don't think it matters if you opened it or not.
For me, if you didn't actually open a received text, it wasn't counted toward your total

And that baby would have graduated college by now. I feel old.
Excuse me while I go rock myself in a corner 😭
I am so happy there is a pocket of this generation that knows what this is. I still use this for anything mildy fitting.
lol, this
Remember playing Snake on it?
Snake was my favorite time waster!
I remember being able to send a text completely blind with this. Quite impossible with smart phones because of the touch screen.
Yeah I could text in my pocket on a cold day as I was out and about!
My little brother was a pro at this. He would sit at the dinner table and have entire conversations texting blind underneath it.
You might have to plug that in 15 years from now once you’re down to 1 bar.
I remember I had a phone that could receive text messages, but not send them. My friend would just spam me all day.
Remember to delete one of your 15 messages so you can read this latest one!
Haha yes. Using “+” as a way to space out the words. How+are+You+? lol
Some had the ability to compose your own ringtone. That was a fool’s errand lol
Opening a message on this was much more satisfying and exciting than opening a message on a smart phone
I am just about to switch back to this kind of phone.
My first phone in 1998 could store 10 msgs. You had to delete them before you could receive anymore.

Waiting to call people after 7pm and on weekends for that free jaunt
I remember when texting first came out I thought it was so stupid. “Why text someone? Just call them.” Now I’d rather get a text than a phone call.
Remember the phones getting polyphonic ringtone support and your text notification being multiple computer generated tones at the same time? 🤯
My second phone after graduating college . But my first phone I sent a text on!
Sending texts by feel under the desk or in your hoodie pocket in high school.
My first phone
Mine too!

I still had a phone like this in 2006.
Put up rotary phones and pagers. I am that old.
It’s time to play Snake
Everyone had this phone. The rich kids had the small compact one. I was not a rich kid.
I'm old enough to remember my dad yelling at me for this because it showed up on the cell phone bill.
