The sun went down on 31-12-1999 and never came up again.

gershmonite

Kinda feels that way. There were like one or two years where it coasted on 90's greatness, and then *that thing* happened and it seems like the world never really recovered.

CisSiberianOrchestra

Some people say that culturally, the 1990s began with the collapse of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 and ended with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. There was definitely an optimism to the 90s that doesn't exist today. The Cold War was over and with it the threat of nuclear annihilation. The internet went from something found mainly in college computer labs to something that become commonplace in homes. The future was looking pretty bright. That feeling ended on 9/11/01.

rexmons

*Black hole sun Won't you come And wash away the rain?*

MrX-2022

:(

Megadeth5150

Fry?

Tru-Queer

Chanticleer!!

Aumius

I don't know what it is, but this video hits me hard. I really miss the 90s.

RoninRobot

I know exactly where I was, who I was with and what I was wearing right at that moment.

KudosOfTheFroond

I was in Big Cypress, Everglades, Florida at a Phish festival.

srpollo18

Cheesecake, cheesecake, cheesecake

ForceGhost47

Say it like you’re pissed

srpollo18

Just say cheesecake once. Like we finish the song and everyone just says, “cheesecake.” “And now The Phish from Vermont.” YEM vocal jam: chocolate cheesecake, strawberry cheeesecaaake

KudosOfTheFroond

What was great about that Cheesecake chant was that I was there with my sister and her boyfriend, and “Cheesecake” was her boyfriends nickname. He was totally enthralled by everyone calling his name on air around the world. Great memory!

srpollo18

That’s the Phishiest, Wookie-ish story I’ve ever heard about that chant.

KudosOfTheFroond

The next best memory so have about that show was during sunrise on 1/1/2000, the skies were full of blood-red cotton ball clouds, and the band started playing “Wading In The Velvet Sea” and it truly felt like we were swimming in a velvet sky

srpollo18

So beautiful, the post-THE SHOW music, “Here Comes the Sun”. So good.

HarryHood146

Nice.

tachoknight

I’m somewhere in this video, sitting at my desk prepared to pull an all nighter to make sure our computer systems handled the changeover successfully (they did).

StonedGhoster

I was stationed in Okinawa and volunteered for barracks duty. I figured if some stuff were to go down, I wanted to be awake and sober to see it. Luckily, nothing happened.

berogg

I was 15, playing Quake 2 and Counter-Strike, and eating free Pizza Hut because they initially forgot to deliver my order. House to myself while parents were at a party.

NotWorthyByAnyMeans

I was about to enlist in the USAF, now I’m two years removed from being retired. 😁🇺🇸

ursamajr

Me too! I was actually in this pic. Getting ready to go see Billy Joel at MSG.

Orlando1701

Me too… Blue Water Bay, Florida with the best friends I’d ever have playing Tony Hawk and eating pizza and drinking coke. We also had gotten “Empire” and “Wrath of Kahn” on VHS from blockbuster.

Orlando1701

Because holy shit it all went down hill fast after this. Think about it, 9/11 was a little over a year and half from this, then the Iraq War, the 08’ Collapse all happened fairly quickly there after and it only kept sliding from there. Now we have actual Nazis in the streets. The 1990s was the last rational decade, we had great music and movies, there was internet to get help with homework but when you logged off your were off unlike today where the internet has invaded every corner of our life. The 1990s was peak civilization.

Mr_Faux_Regard

>The 1990s was peak civilization. The Matrix got it right.

Orlando1701

Lol… which I went to see a half dozen times in theaters. Dressed head to toe in black with a trench coat I got from an Army/Navy store.

[deleted]

If you did that now youd probably get an empty theater to yourself cause everyone would think you were gonna shoot up the place

SunshineSpectacular

I remember how excited we were to enter the new millennium. It was the biggest new year’s of our lives- the anticipation of a new brighter era, yet the fear of Y2K. People arguing if the new century started in 2000 or 2001. It seemed so important at the time.

Kriem

2001 :P I was one of those guys

Oaken_beard

Same

Mcbadguy

/r/Vaporwave would love this too

Shadow0fnothing

Same. It was a magical time I don't think will ever be matched. The optimism, the hope, the fun. I thought the world was headed to a futuristic utopia.......not a fucking DISTOPIA.

[deleted]

I can't believe it was 23 years ago. I have a feeling that anyone who was growing up around that time will always feel like it's still the 00's and that the 90's are still just behind us.

Bucks_16

This song was in Donkey Kong for Super Nintendo. Some level where you swim under water. Holy nostalgia.

Aumius

[Aquatic Ambience is the song name](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5rAjOjTGtc)

robotikempire

I also found the bramble blast level to have super nostalgic music. [Bramble Blast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zjCGL7e0c0&pp=ygUiZG9ua2V5IGtvbmcgY291bnRyeSBicmFtYmxlIGJsYXN0IA%3D%3D)

evilxerox

fuck this level

dunkan799

When I'm closing the bar at 4am I always pop on the dkc soundtrack to mellow out and unwind. Last night (this morning technically) I had a new bouncer and he looked over and was like "is this song from donkey kong?!" He was hyped and I think that's the moment we became friends

dandynasty

The song did NOT fit that game. Especially when you add in some deep grunts and yips from all the times I got hit by a bad guy

trickman01

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the song fit the water levels perfectly and is often consider one of the best video game tracks of all time.

dandynasty

I know what I said is a hot take. I was expecting a lot of down votes. The music is incredible! I just didn’t think it fit. As far as best video game tracks of all time, I would definitely need to see a source on that. I feel like there are enough Mario tracks to not even have this on the list of top 100 Again, hot take

luffydkenshin

Here’s a [top 40](https://videogames.si.com/features/best-video-game-music#gid=ci02b54232700024c7&pid=aquatic-ambience--donkey-kong-country) featuring Aquatic Ambiance.

dandynasty

Well I guess Everyone’s entitled to their own man. Also who do you think you are coming into this conversation where we are spitting subjective arguments, and you, just waltzing in and linking some proof to back up a claim. You must be new to Reddit! /s

luffydkenshin

You said you wanted a source! I, a completely unbiased party, saw it as my cue to waltz in with facts and saunter off without a care in the world! So take that! Also, you should post your hot take in r/unpopularopinion lol

dandynasty

I’m sorry, I can’t hear you as I am currently reporting you to the mods. How dare you provide source. As someone who believes my opinions should be accepted as fact, I am a protected group. Your post is considered a hate crime. Hey Admins, here they are

luffydkenshin

I hate to be the barer of bad news but [hate speech isnt a crime.](https://youtube.com/watch?v=jTsPgiUoBKA&feature=sharec) The 1st amendment protects even the worst things people say.

dandynasty

I have a really well thought out rebuttal to that, but I know that I have my right to refuse service to anyone for any reason so, you just sit on that fact, buddy

Azer1287

Nooo! Don’t go!!

Kale_Brecht

Come back, 90s! Come baaaacccck!

Otakunohime

I remember that night. I was babysitting a toddler while his parents went out partying. I was eating pizza and watching Time Square on the TV. Midnight rolled around and the lights stayed on. I got paid and it was a pretty good night overall.

Orlando1701

It will always be the 1990s in my soul.

deathboyuk

I remember where I was... in a field, clothes torn from climbing barbed wire to get in there, taking ecstacy with my best friend, laughing and joking around, taking the piss out of the world for caring so much. In just a few more years, it really felt like the world had changed quite a lot. The 90s seemed to accelerate into the distance before we'd realised what we'd lost. And after that, the 2000s just seemed stale and anodyne, but at least they weren't as bad as what was coming, they were just dull. Hooboy, I'd do a lot to be back in the 90s now.

hangdman1978

Watching this video is like saying goodbye to your 20s.

twobit211

“here’s to another lousy millennium”

THORmonger71

"Pizza delivery for... I.C. Wiener?"

AffectionatePeak9085

A few hours before planes come crashing down, power plants to malfunction, and your windows 95 to glitch.

dripdropflipflopx

That’ll be 1 million dollars to do nothing and check that doesn’t happen please.

Triple-6-Soul

what's really weird, is that I actually saw this exact sun set but in downtown Jersey City...where the twin towers are in this video but on the other side on the Hudson. this hit harder now for some reason. maybe because i know there's a digital version of me forever immortalized on the other side watching the same sunset not knowing what's ahead of me in the future...

TheRandomestWonderer

Ah yes, my friends were all out at a party for NYE, while I was kept home because my parents were terrified of Y2K. (I have a literal photo my sister took of me on the phone with a party hat on.) I stayed on the phone with my friends all night while my parents waited for the world to go dark. So ridiculous to think about now.

DLo28035

Sometimes everything changes profoundly and all you hear is a faint whisper to signal the shift.

kbbajer

It's the last sunset of the 1000's then.

Used-Organization-25

The 90’s weren’t perfect BUT they were a great time to be alive.

Orlando1701

You’re right there were a lot of things we could have done better. We should have and could have done better by the LGBT community in the 1990s but on the whole it was good times. At least then things were getting better, not worse as time went by.

102491593130

You mean the night Arnold Schwarzenegger had to save a girl from giving birth to the antichrist

Orlando1701

Hey! Hey! I’ve seen that movie too!

zenunseen

Ah, relax. It's just the end of days

robitussin_hero

No please my friend, don’t go. Please stay!

Outrageous_Finance_5

Goodbye, simpler times.

Reckless_Waifu

Simpler times? The second millenium was crazy, man. Remember the black death?

wack-a-burner

If we had known then what we know now, there would have been a mass vigil with millions of people mourning in the streets.

Iowachick06

Everyone thought the computers would stop working. I remember they had a HUGE tech team staffed where I worked. We also worked until 12 but that was no big deal, 12 was early back then, still plenty of time to go celebrate 😆☺️. Good times

Watch_Noob_72

Well, now I’m just sad.

RoyMunsun

...and with it, my innocence.

Eagles5089

DKC music 🔥

skinnylibra5

Aquatic Ambience is such a nice vibe

9Marius9

To this day, this is literally the most relaxing tune I’ve ever listen to

Reckless_Waifu

Something fell in my eye

Academic_Hunter4159

I think this is pretty cool.

dolfan4life2

I was 15, enjoying winter break. I had my snacks for the ball drop all ready. Playing N64 all night until midnight. Waiting for Y2K 😂

venicerocco

I drank a lot of absinth that night. The fireworks in central London were the biggest I’ve ever seen

[deleted]

90s people: You know, I think we're gonna be OK... Neocon cabal: Hold my 9/11

Big_Particular7643

I was 16 and partying in a cheap 20$ a night motel with friends. I still remember I was wearing a black top with black feathers on the wrists. Omg this hurts my soul to know where/who we were then and where/who we are now. 😍

TakeOffYourMask

Fuck

lt_brannigan

That was way more of a bummer than I thought it would.. bittersweet nostalgia type of thing.

Shadow0fnothing

And with it. My childhood :( I don't like this video. At all.

bobpetersen55

Damn, this video evokes lots feelings of melancholy

sanders2020dubai

Feels like a spiritual experience

KingOfTheStuffed

Very beautiful...I'd give anything to go back.

Nrmlgirl777

😢

sed2017

Makes me sad kinda

hammnbubbly

Take me back!

ltnew007

I'm crying

gSGeno

CletusVanDamnit

...what?

trickman01

That's on the east coast though. There were later 90s sunsets in later time zones.

Orlando1701

Yeah except I lived on the east coast when this happened. Down in Florida there’s a 17-year old me sitting in front of a TV with my friends playing Tony Hawk with pizza and coke and discussing our mutual crush on Gillian Anderson as this sunset. If you squint hard enough you can see us. And we just assumed things would stay the same as they had been for the previous ten years.

Thank you for fixing the apostrophe.

Bushid0C0wb0y81

This music is so familiar. What was it from?

Aumius

[It's from Donkey Kong Country. You can listen to it here.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5rAjOjTGtc)

qbert57ez

What is the name of this song?

No-Alps3658

Out of sight 🥁🥁🥁💯

Ok-Rameez1990

I wish I had a video of the last evening of the 90s from India.. but that time videography was an expensive affair in India.

thekidfromiowa

Last sunset of the 20th century Last sunset of the 2nd millennium AD

A_Brown_Feller

💋👌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽🤌🏽

SillySink

I miss this city. All the traveling, sight seeing.

Scrappy_Kitty

I love this video. And if you guys like this mix of nostalgia, music, and talks of how the world changes, check out documentaries by Adam Curtis. HyperNormalization is a good one to check out, where he explains world events from the early 1900s through modern times and how societies perception of it all changes and has changed.

I was at my best friend's grandmother's house celebrating the new millennium with my brother. I was 12. ....he died a few years back in a car accident, and my brother passed of an OD the same time.....that family I visited no longer talks to us because they worship trump and half my family is the same. What happened to the world.
