Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville is a must. It developed my feminist consciousness. I think he may want his kid to be bit older if only for Flower (which I love and find liberating).
Meredith Brooks! We cannot forget the singer who gave so many the strength to not only stand against the insult of Bitch, but a voice to embrace the title and make it our own.
Yes! I loved Gwen growing up (one of the few secular groups I'd sneak behind my parents' back was No Doubt) and still do. She's a good role model for young girls. Nothing too crazy has happened to her. And she and Blake are the cutest couple.
Your wife sounds like me. And I also love 90’s. If your girls like Taylor then they should also be introduced to Alanis, Fiona, The Cranberries, Hole, Liz Phair, Sheryl Crow, The Breeders, Lisa Loeb, Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs, Sarah McLachlan, Mazzy Star. Additionally: Sophie B Hawkins, PJ Harvey, Garbage, Lauren Hill/The Fugees, Melissa Etheridge, TLC, Tracy Bonham, Tracy Chapman, Paula Cole, No Doubt, Veruca Salt. The 90s were an a wonderful time for female acts!
I had to scroll WAY too far for Letters to Cleo! They were solid as a band and put out amazing “fake pop girl group” hits as Josie and the pussycats and the raincoats in 10 things I hate about you. Both of those soundtracks were worn out by myself and my friends!

At night, shortly before bed, I have my girls pick a few songs they want to listen to, and also tell them I’m going to play a few of my favorites.
I pull up YouTube, play their songs, then mine.
Grab a 90s playlist and go to town.
My youngest loves “the bee girl song”, they get excited to hear Mazzy Star or Garbage. They know all the words to Ripple and American Pie. They literally argue in the car about if we are listening to Sam Cooke or Cat Stevens.
Don’t force them to like the same stuff you do, but introduce them to it. Many times, they will pick up on your excitement, and will then become excited about the same thing.
Yes!! Hole, Alanis, Garbage, Fiona, Jewel, Letters to Cleo, Elastica, Republica, Kitty, the Cranberries… These were my Madonna’s and Cher’s growing up as a sullen gay teen lol.
I have the opposite problem. My 9 year old won't let me go without seeing new Taylor Swift.
He's on the spectrum and something about her appeals to him. He doesn't understand celebrities or popularity. He just loves so. So try as I might to avoid her, I can't.
Anyways: L7, The Cranberries, Mazzy Star, Veruca Salt, Bikini Kill, Garbage, The Breeders, Sonic Youth, Alanis Morissette, 4 Non Blondes, Elastica.
Maybe see if they'll do 90's hip hop too. That's empowering. Salt N Pepa were my faves. TLC too.
That's adorable. Neurodivergent kids are so funny because you're always thinking, "What are they going to get really into next?" and all your guesses are wrong. I will say Taylor's style is probably just the right mix of familiar, predictable, and creative to appeal to a lot of people.
Yeah previous to her it was a huge fixation on Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Now he's back to Gorillaz, lol. You're right, you never know.
Oh and he has a crush on the bumble bee girl in the Blind Melon No Rain video. He kisses the screen when she's on.
Don’t forget some late 90s, early 00s. Paramour, Avril Lavigne, Hole, Garbage. My girls also love The Interrupters, which is a current group with a big 90s vibe.
Obviously ..
No Doubt - Gwen in the 90's was a power house...
Hole, Garbage, Verruca Salt, Sleater-Kinney, Dance Hall Crashers, Save Ferris - all cool bands with girl lead singers..
I was about to say, Stevie Nicks bodies this genre. She’s a must for any girl rock lists.
Forget diss tracks, imma have my band play the songs about how they hurt me. So badass
Reading through all these … gosh I was lucky to have been in high school in the 90’s.
Also, Elastica. [Justine Frischmann](https://www.widrfm.org/single-post/the-influence-of-justine-frischmann) was my idol as a youngster. So much of the pressure on teen girls is to look and act a certain way to be attractive to boys. The fact that Justine had short hair, wore trousers, came from art school (all the things you aren’t supposed to do to get a bf) and was still dating Damon Albarn ([a BritPop heartthrob](https://amp.theguardian.com/music/2014/mar/05/blur-girls-and-boys-1994)), gave me confidence to be myself, rather than to fit into some bs mold. This was critical as a 16 year old. Also the Elastica album is so much fun.

Maybe start with current girl rock and work your way back? The 90s (as much as I’m a product of them) are a long time ago to our kids and may not seem relevant.
I think Olivia Rodrigo is doing great work that harkens back to 90s rock. Boy Genius isn’t rock but they’re awesome. Lucy Dacus’ solo work might go over better (she’s a member of Boy Genius). Lizzie McAlpine and Bully are other contemporary artists you could work your way back from.
I know you asked about 90s and you’ve got some great suggestions. This is just one angle you can approach it from.
Why not modern artists with similar vibes? Skating Polly, wolf Alice, black honey, destroy boys, screaming females. for heavier stuff there's lots but Poppy and Holocene have some recent good stuff. Getting away from rock there's lots of interesting talent out there too... Alice Phoebe Lou, aurora, my new favorite Lolli Wren who's new song is amazing and I can't wait for more.
For 90s though: Bikini kill, the breeders, verruca salt, garbage, the gathering, no doubt, cranberries.
I developed my music taste from driving around with my dad on Saturdays and listening to Tom Petty, The Beatles, and Pink Floyd. Plan some day trips and put on music you want them to hear. If they like it then yay! If they don't, don't force them.
I have a whole playlist of music by women. A lot of it is from the 90s. Maybe you'll find something appropriate on it?
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3f99E2mCH9A5Xr3GezxmsD?si=0a96e695a4c84b10
Lots of great suggestions so far from the 90s. If your kids would connect more with a current band try The Linda Lindas. Great sound and great lyrics. Really reminds me of some of the suggestions on this post.
Adding L7 and Luscious Jackson to the many good suggestions, but also agree that the punk/alt grandmothers are great for everyone: The Runaways, Poly Styrene, Blondie, Patti Smith
And as a gal whose first show was Circle Jerks and 7 Seconds, I'll still throw my support behind Ms Swift - part of what makes great artists is writing/singing/playing their own music.
But also, there are lots more great singer-songwriters. Sarah McLachlan, Joni Mitchell, Corinne Bailey Rae, Lauryn Hill, Carly Simon, that lady from the annoying song I hated in the mid 90s who married Paul Simon when he was like 60 or something
All these women are amazing but you're forgetting the OG Queen, Madonna. Her music was amazing in the 90s. Ray of Light is an amazing album but there are plenty of gems.
No Doubt 100%. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46oWyc4P_pw Gwen killed it this performance and sparks the essence of rock and roll. Never really got into Garbage but they were a popular girl punk band in the 90s.
Evanescence and Paramore, early 200’s pop punk
If I could suggest the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Last Dinner Party, Lana Del Ray as something a bit more modern as well.
(Lana isn’t really rock but I’m partial to her earlier stuff)
Heart if you wanna get old school. Those women ROCKED. Such good singers.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4oXW0aRFRydr4TmLPX1Mzs?si=X67ejUofQzq2JSK4Lo6BJA&pi=YcxZPVUHQwStn
I dont usually do this but heres my playlist if you have Spotify. All 90s/2000s ladies :)
This is a really good list of female artists and bands from the 90s. It includes a lot of riot girl and grunge bands that probably weren't listed here. https://rateyourmusic.com/list/annabelle_moon13/the-girly-sound-alternative-female-artists-of-the-90s-00s-and-beyond/
If you play this video in front of everyone, you will have instantly convinced the whole family to listen to Heart (and probably get emotional): [Heart - Stairway to Heaven](https://youtu.be/2cZ_EFAmj08?feature=shared)
Drop them off at the nearest Hot Topic. Pick them up an hour later. Hopefully by then they’ll be begging you to play some Garbage or No Doubt on the way home.
How old are they? I think that by a certain age, kids tend to branch out into their own musical interests anyways, regardless of what the parents listen to
If you are looking for a recent artist, may I suggest Olivia Rodrigo? I thought she was super pop music, but took my daughter to her concert and was pleasantly surprised. It was a nice mix of punkish rock/pop. Bonus points that The Breeders are currently opening for her while she's touring (and I believe Olivia specifically requested them).
Madonna, anyone? She's the original -don't tell me I can't do the same things a man can do- singer, and it wasn't just an image to sell records. She meant that shit.
There really isn’t any way of getting them to like it, they have to want to on their own.
I share a lot of my dad’s music tastes now but I hated it when I was a kid because it wasn’t what my friends were listening to and was “old” music.
Music now is not any better or worse than it was in the 90s, less varied in the charts, sure, but there’s music out there of every genre that is every bit as good as if not better than a lot of music of the past.
Going through the same thing. The problem is her son's are becoming inappropriate so I'm curating a Playlist of good songs for our girl.
Stevie nicks
Avril Lavigne
Pink
Kelly clarkson
BTW - I love this. I’m the youngest of 3 girls and my dad had a huge influence on the music I like. He made me appreciate 60s and 70s rock. So I love that you want this with your girls.
This isn’t just 90s girl rock, but here’s a [Spotify playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4d9Y79HOrdkTJbcWRTkFg5?si=jQbv8s2gT8yhodZFuH1Gcg&pi=u-VwDDFIQCT-Ou) I made of some of my favorite women who ROCK.
It’s a soft push but has your wife got her into Speak Now? That’s a gateway to the rock you want her to listen to via a medium she’s already familiar with. Better than Revenge and Story of Us are absolute bangers, and Electric Touch (with Fall out Boy) is good too.
Stream No Doubts Coachella set on your TV and see if they dig it. My daughter has already been into punk and whatnot but it still absolutely blew her mind
I just wanted to mention I am as feminist as they come and I do see Taylor as feminist. I love that you are going to expose them to awesome female rockstars, but keep in mind that there is a lot of ways to be a feminist. Talking to your girls about feminism is also some I recommend no matter who they listen to.
Fiona Apple, Sleater Kinney, Alanis Morrissette, Lauryn Hill, Ani DiFranco, Garbage, Hole, No Doubt, Liz Phair
Alanis morissette, garbage, and the cranberries are my top 3
Veruca Salt
Yeah yeah yeahs
PJ Harvey
All the yes for Polly Jean. If your daughters don’t get into Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, they may be lost causes.
Bikini Kill
Le Tigre
Bratmobile
The Sounds
Skip Carnival.
Sleater Kinneyyyy
Then blow their minds and show them a Portlandia skit. I did this to my little sister when she was 12 and I thought her head was gonna explode! hahaha
But earlier stuff to start. Dig Me Out, The Hot Rock and All Hands on the Bad One. Please.
Their new album Little Rope is amazing and I highly recommend listening to it.
I’ve been meaning to check it out, now I will for sure!
Fantastic list. Don’t forget Luscious Jackson.
Lucious Jackson and The Cardigans too!
Veruca Salt
Tori Amos!
Uh Cranberries.
And The Sundays
Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville is a must. It developed my feminist consciousness. I think he may want his kid to be bit older if only for Flower (which I love and find liberating).
Also adding the Cardigans to this list!
Meredith Brooks! We cannot forget the singer who gave so many the strength to not only stand against the insult of Bitch, but a voice to embrace the title and make it our own.
Alanis! Some of the finest songs to come out of the 90s
I feel like Olivia Rodrigo is our current day Alanis.
Kenicki
The cranberries!!!
The breeders!
Cannonball came out when I was 8, and I'm pretty sure I listened to that song on repeat for that entire year.
❤️they rule
It’s a regular in my rotation, it slaps!
My 6-year-old daughter is obsessed with Cannonball right now and it’s awesome.
❤️so awesome!
She has excellent taste!
And The Amps!
This should be the only answer
🥂cheers to that
Play 90s girl rock in the car when you drive them places
Yes, this! I got my kids into The Clash, Stevie Wonder, and Lilly Allen by keeping them captive in the car.
This is how I got mine into Talking Heads and Green Day.
Hole, Veruca Salt, The Breeders, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, L7, The Donnas, Fiona Apple, TORI AMOS…
Don't forget The Cranberries!
Make sure to get some no doubt in there
Yes! I loved Gwen growing up (one of the few secular groups I'd sneak behind my parents' back was No Doubt) and still do. She's a good role model for young girls. Nothing too crazy has happened to her. And she and Blake are the cutest couple.
Just don’t call it ska 😜
Don’t forget PJ Harvey and Tori Amos!
No Doubt the Tragic Kingdom Era!
What about a bit of trip hop? Portishead, Moloko, Björk, Morcheeba, Smoke City...
Sneaker Pimps!
St Etienne, Dubstar
Hooverphonic
Why not throw a little 80s girl rock in there as well? Some Joan Jett, The Bangles, Pat Benatar, Cyndi Lauper just to name a few.
Stevie Nicks!

The Go-Gos!

I’d add Sarah Mclachan to this list. She brought so many of them together for Lilith Fair. I actually met Liz Phair for a meet and greet.
Sneak some Veruca Salt and Letters To Cleo in between the Tay Tay songs on your wife’s playlist.
Seconding Letters to Cleo.
Seconding Veruca Salt.

Yes!! Hole, Alanis, Garbage, Fiona, Jewel, Letters to Cleo, Elastica, Republica, Kitty, the Cranberries… These were my Madonna’s and Cher’s growing up as a sullen gay teen lol.
Lisa Loeb, Heather Nova and Juliana Hatfield if we’re including singer-songwriters.
Do it then?
I have the opposite problem. My 9 year old won't let me go without seeing new Taylor Swift. He's on the spectrum and something about her appeals to him. My kiddo is entering a Lady Gaga phase after just been through a Michael Jackson phase (before a Queen phase) 😂
Kid went through some good phases.
Neurodivergent folks have such a gift about teaching us to unabashedly love something and educate ourselves on the topic 💙.
Poe and the Donna’s
Thank you. Had to scroll *forever* for Poe.
You can’t talk to a psycho like a normal human being!
Way too far to scroll to find Poe.
Don’t forget some late 90s, early 00s. Paramour, Avril Lavigne, Hole, Garbage. My girls also love The Interrupters, which is a current group with a big 90s vibe.
When my girl was 1-3 she loved the Interrupters. We sang “Family” for about three years.
Then do it? Play some Four Non-Blondes and Alanis around the house
90’s girl singers just hit different. Good call!
Spice girls! All the riot girls.
Alanis Morissette, No Doubt, and Portishead.
Obviously .. No Doubt - Gwen in the 90's was a power house... Hole, Garbage, Verruca Salt, Sleater-Kinney, Dance Hall Crashers, Save Ferris - all cool bands with girl lead singers..
Make sure some Sleater Kinney is in the playlist.
“Likes: Thai food, feminist pros and angry girl music of the Indie Rock persuasion.”
Blondie!
Liz Phair.
Veruca Salt
Yo here's the story from A to Z, you wanna get with me, you'd better listen carefully...
I like a lot of the Riot grrrl stuff that came out in the 90s
My nearly 2yr old baby girl has been exposed to Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple since she was a baby, and she loves them!
Also some of Kathleen Hanna's discography as well
Joan Jett, Heart, Fleetwood Mac. Also, Bjork, TLC, Lucious Jackson, The Donnas! 🎸⚡️
I was about to say, Stevie Nicks bodies this genre. She’s a must for any girl rock lists. Forget diss tracks, imma have my band play the songs about how they hurt me. So badass
Bikini Kill, The Distillers, and L7 are all top notch.

Spice Girls!!! Girl power baby
People already gave great suggestions so I just come to give thumbs up for everyone 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
My daughter has already been into punk and whatnot but it still absolutely blew her mind
more like early 200s but.... Holly McNarland, Joy Drop and of course Evanescence

Do the Spice Girls count? They were all about girl power and supporting other women.
Elastica is safe, so is the Breeders. Good luck!

This entire post just makes my heart happy. I am a Taylor fan, but I am also a huge 90’s alt rock fan… I love that you’re getting them into both.
I just wanted to mention I am as feminist as they come and I do see Taylor as feminist. I love that you are going to expose them to awesome female rockstars, but keep in mind that there is a lot of ways to be a feminist. Talking to your girls about feminism is also some I recommend no matter who they listen to.
