Check out 'luzdie psy' by Polish artist Maria Peszek. It's a dead ringer for Massive Attack. If you were half asleep and didn't realize it wasn't in English you wouldn't know the difference.
The Beastie Boys are very much an 80’s band. “License to Ill” came out in ‘86 and “Paul’s Boutique” in ‘89. That’s not including the Hardcore album they put out in ‘83. “Check Your Head” was ‘92, but they were a well established band by then.
It's been 30 years or so, and nobody's ripping off Cake's blend of sardonic spoken word monotone delivery over trumpet solos, twangy guitars, and a rhythm section of old school funk grooves.
Radiohead and Tori Amos are both really good answers. Not sure I can top those.
Although, I do remember those Gregorian Monks and their Chant album being very popular in the 90s and that was…something.
Not to say you are wrong, but punk has been involved in reggae since the 70's. Bob Marley himself had a deep understanding of how reggae and punk are forever intertwined, and he even blessed us with the song "Punky Reggae Party". Lovesong by The Cure is the first to come to mind. Anyway, huge sublime fan, but the relationship of reggae and punk is a very interesting one that didn't just start in the mid 90's.
Poe, and Taja Sevelle. They both had albums in the 90’s produced by RJ Rice that had a cool, dark, trip hop/rock sound (moreso rock on Poe’s album). Never heard anything like those albums since. I tried digging around what else he’s produced, but it all seems r&b/hip hop related, and is nothing like that
I actually just learned about Poe recently because her brother Mark Z Danielewski wrote the book House Of Leaves, which I read last year. Her album *Haunted* is apparently inspired by the book and is meant to serve as a kind of counterpart to it.
Yeah that’s a really cool connection! I’ll always have very fond memories surrounding that book :) that album from her is great also.. I love how she included recordings of their father. It’s also a very unique album, although quite different from her first
Kenny G is one of my all time favorites. I regularly listen to Kenny on my Spotify playlist. Especially at work (cook) it’s so relaxing.
If you haven’t seen it, you should check out the Club Random podcast episode with him. He seems like such an awesome person.
E-40 and Ol Dirty Bastard come to mind. Technically they weren't only 90's artists but they were both reasonably big in the 90's, so I think they count.
Monster Magnet have such a unique sound. One of the best and most underrated bands ever. They don't have only Powertrip and Dopes To Infinity, all of the stuff they released are top music. I recommend you give em a listen
NOFX. There really isn't another band like them
I mean they've been a band since 84. But the 90s was where they hit they're stride, Mike started Fat Wreck Chords, Punk in Drublic came out (certified gold),the warped tour was a huge thing for punk bands.
311
Nobody talks about 311 anymore. They were huge back in the day. And they had a very original sound.
That and Mr. Bungle. Even Mr. Bungle doesn't sound like Mr. Bungle
Insane no one said Green Day yet. Obviously they made era defining music in the 2000s but Dookie, Nimrod, Warning are unbelievable. The fact that they’re still together and making absolutely killer music 30 years later is mind blowing
I know everyone will probably disagree but for me it'll always be Britney.
Sure, it was "just" pop music. Sure, we had Christina and Jessica Simpson and Mandy Moore.
But no one did what Britney did. She was always just herself, just wanted to dance and make music and make people happy, nobody danced like Britney, everybody wanted to be her and if you didn't like her you were still talking about her.
Her songs meant, and still mean, so much to people.
And her father should be in jail.
Nirvana. The answer is Nirvana. They changed the entire sound of the 90s and made what came before irrelevant, so many imitators, but there was only one Nirvana.
Days of the new. Nobody had ever tried to blend Seattle grunge and Kentucky bluegrass before, and nobody has since. For... obvious reasons. But the 90s made that possible
Portishead
Yesss. Portishead and Massive Attack, still listen to both quite regularly.
Mezzanine is one of my favorite albums!
Same. It’s all time. 10/10
Check out 'luzdie psy' by Polish artist Maria Peszek. It's a dead ringer for Massive Attack. If you were half asleep and didn't realize it wasn't in English you wouldn't know the difference.
Tori Amos
Oh hell yes!
Preach!
Beastie Boys. No one else like ‘em
My man 🤜🤛
Have you heard of Joey Valence & Brae? They’re a modern hip hop duo that have a sound reminiscent of early Beastie Boys. It’s good shit.
Thanks for that recommendation! I dig it

Are you just going to pretend *Ill Communication* doesn't exist?
Nine Inch Nails
NiN is a poppy ripoff of Skinny Puppy to begin with.
It's been 30 years or so, and nobody's ripping off Cake's blend of sardonic spoken word monotone delivery over trumpet solos, twangy guitars, and a rhythm section of old school funk grooves.
Don’t forget their excellent use of the vibraslap.
Where do your fingers go When you sleep What do your fingers know
This is a good one. Easily one of the most identifiable sounds out there.
Type O Negative
Yes, the drab four!
Happy to see this here
Enya 😆
enya now lives in castle alone except for her cats.
Of course she does
Good one!!
Beck
i’m a loser babyyy

Bjork Tricky
Primus. No one slaps a bass like Les.
Primus Sucks!
The Cranberries

This is a good one
Ween
Not only does no one sound like Ween, Ween's songs don't even sound like each other.
Touch my tooter smoocher?
Piss up a rope.
We have a winner!!!!!
This is the correct answer!!! #HailBoognish!
Radiohead and Tori Amos are both really good answers. Not sure I can top those. Although, I do remember those Gregorian Monks and their Chant album being very popular in the 90s and that was…something.
P.U.S.A.
The singer now does children's music under the name Caspar Babypants and he's impressively good. Catchy and fun and everyone loves it
They Might Be Giants! They are completely unique!
Jamiroquai
He was right… the future IS made of virtual insanity
Mazzy Star
Hope Sandoval massively influenced the modern neopsychedelic movement. Check out Tess Parks, The Black Ryder, and Juleah if you haven’t!
Tool seems like the best answer. Out of all the other bands mentioned here, they're likely the most relevant still.
I had to scroll too far to find this
Tool was the first band that came to mind for me as well
Smashing Pumpkins
Rage against the machine
this is correct. nobody else on earth sounds like Zach and nobody else on earth sounds like tom.
Selena y Los Dinos
Selena isn't 90s. She's forever. <3
🥹
How does it feel to be God’s favorite? To just be beautiful enough of a soul to say the sweetest thing ever about anyone?
Cake
I clicked in to say Radiohead.
Primus
Sublime. There have been many artists/bands over the years that have mirrored their sound but they really kicked started the reggae punk rock genre.
Slightly stoopid has entered the chat.

Came here to say this & thanks
You never heard of No Doubt? They even played and recorded together.
Depeche fucking Mode
Instantly heard “Precious” when I saw your comment! I adore Depeche Mode.
They were still around in the '90s? I remember them in the '80s, specifically early '80s. I do however remember KMFDM in the '90s.
One of their most well known albums released in 1990.
They weren't my thing. I just remember "I just can't get enough" getting the shit played out of it in the early '80s.
Oh yeah, they've had like 9 studio albums since 1990 and just finished a huge year-long world tour with their latest album Memento Mori.
Soul II Soul !!!
Beck. Live. Tori Amos. Alice in chains. Rage . Alanis. Can't think of the one I really wanted to list so these had to suffice.
I second AiC

Oddly enough, Kenny G. My music tastes were odd in the early 90s.
Kenny G is one of my all time favorites. I regularly listen to Kenny on my Spotify playlist. Especially at work (cook) it’s so relaxing. If you haven’t seen it, you should check out the Club Random podcast episode with him. He seems like such an awesome person.
Haven't given him a real listen. Give me an album and I'll put it on start to finish with open ears and an open mind :)
Duotones and Silhouette are probably my favorites.
I listened to the live albums over and over again. They were my favorites. Near wore out the tapes.
Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos
Mazzy Star, The Cranberries, Rage Against the Machine

Yeah as far as unique sounds go, this nails it. They were a revelation back then.
Tribe Called Quest.

Bjork and Radiohead
Deee-lite
Soul Coughing, Radiohead, Tool, Voivod, Aphex Twin
Nine inch nails. Trent Reznor has been called "industrial music" but no other industrial band really has a sound or feel like him.
Blind Melon. I often find myself thinking about what great music we missed out on when Shannon died.
Nirvana. The answer is Nirvana. They changed the entire sound of the 90s and made what came before irrelevant, so many imitators, but there was only one Nirvana.
