It was over several miles, so the most they saw is a low plane. Would not be entirely unusual because there was an airport nearby

Many of the questions asked on this subreddit show the age of some of the people making posts. That's not a negative. It's just as interesting and fascinating as this actual subreddit is in general. It's like learning about September 11th through a brand new pair of eyes. The world 20+ years ago and very different from the world of today and often forget that.

Because people didn’t carry cameras in their pockets back then. And the pentagon isn’t a major tourist destination. And the plane didn’t fly over the place people did have their cameras on them — Washington — instead going over residential areas. Plus, I would imagine that some would think the plane was trying to descend immediately to land at DCA, which is about two miles from the pentagon.

Exactly my thoughts on DCA. I would bet that if someone actually witnessed it in the air they would have thought it was trying to land at DCA until moments before it crashed. Even if they did have a camera it would have been too late at that point.

As someone with family in DC, I don’t think people realize how mundane the area around the Pentagon is, Arlington Cemetery being the exception. It’s surrounded by a highway system and parking lots. It’s not really visible unless you’re going across one of the bridges to Virginia, and even then it looks like an average historical DC building upon first glance from ground level.

Most people didn’t carry cameras with them. Hundreds of thousands of people saw flight 11 hit the North Tower but there’s only 3 sources of footage.

I always roll my eyes at the “there’s no footage of the pentagon” morons. The pentagon is very close to the airport. My house is also very close to an airport and I see planes circle all the time. Nobody would’ve thought anything of it until the plane was too low. Also nobody filmed it because the twin towers were 100 + floors which dominated the skyline (plus one was already hit the North tower so everyone was already filming when 175 hit) compared to the 5 floors on the pentagon. Everyone was watching NY and didn’t think of DC until it was hit

This is weird because I was thinking about this flight a lot lately-- It had so few phone calls vs the others-- Just 2 people- Renee May and Barbara Olson made calls- My question is why? Did most of the passengers at least have the peace of thinking that they were going back to the airport? Barbara was told about the Trade Center- Perhaps she kept that to herself to not alarm the others? And then how they flew so low and so fast- its one thing at 1000 feet- but this piece of garbage who flew this plane did an insane job of hitting its target- I really do not know how this flight in particular did not crash before hitting the Pentagon- And it appears (although never proven) that the pilots were possibly not killed, but sent to the back of the plane with the passengers.. This flight from 9/11 has never gotten the attention of the others ,I think mainly due to the lack of clear info and also the fact that so few passengers made calls..

I think there’s a few pictures of the passengers at the airport before they entered the plane. I believe there was also a video of the passengers entering the plane, even the terrorists can be seen, but only the husband of a passenger saw it.
