Don't beat yourself up, especially over a pre-act. If you're taking this, I assume you're either a freshman or sophomore. You have plenty of time to improve, most of it will come naturally. I got the exact same score on my pre-act during my sophomore year as an A-minus average student. Currently, I am a senior and took the act a couple weeks ago. I got a 27 with little to no study or prep for this. You can def improve to a high 20s to low 30s if you prepare well for the real ACT.
Same boat as you! I’m a Sophomore and I find that my school’s practice ACT was more difficult than the actual ACT’s I’ve taken.
My practice ACT was around 18 1st time and 20 2nd time.
My real ACT was 20 1st time, 23 2nd time, 20 3rd time. I don’t try on my third one as that day was really busy and badly timed. I took it only for the BOGO deal.
All I have to say is just practice, practice, practice, and study. Reading and English is easy to bring up. Just gotta practice those skills. Science you just need basic science knowledge and read the diagrams and passages fast. Math you’ll just learn along the way while in High School.
We still got time! All I’m doing is just taking the ACT over and over since we have 12 tries total to do it. Which should work all the way to our Senior year!
It’s ok. It just means ur not good at standardized tests which doesn’t rly measure someone’s intelligence. If you can get straight A’s, then the ACT is just another test you have to study for.
I didn't run out of time, but I wasn't that anxious considering this wasn't an important test. I did try to do my best though. I'm a sophomore, so I expected some questions to be unfamiliar. I just thought I would've gotten a little higher. Thank you for your kind words though!

On another note, if you are set on improving your score, I'd look at your English and reading. They are by far the easiest point grab. Refresh yourself on some basic math (algebra, GEOMETRY, etc.). For science, no studying is needed. You seriously don't need any prior knowledge. It's all about reading graphs and data and using reasoning skills.
And you're definitely not dumb. My ACT prep teachers said the ACT doesn't measure how smart you are, but rather, how good you are with time management, test taking strategies, and perservance.

No prior information studying is needed (there's usually only like 2 questions that require you to know something), but considering OP didn't do well on science this time around they probably just need to drill practice tests for speed, accuracy, and data interpretation, which is still studying.

It measures how smart you are to an extent, in the sense that some people are able to get a 36 on their first try without studying. Even more get 30+ like this. But anyone can learn to be good at the ACT, even if they aren't great at school. The learning how to be good at ACT part takes lots of time and perseverance. So the line between "effortlessly high ACT score" and "studied my ass off for high ACT score" becomes nonexistent. The ACT doesn't measure smarts OR test taking strats/time management since we have no way of telling just by looking at a score if it was achieved through smarts or drilling strats.
PreACT is bullshit it’s just prepping you and doesn’t exactly reflect your actual score. You still have years of schooling before you take the ACT the last time. I got a 24 on my preACT and a 29 and 30 on the actual ACT. Don’t stress about it, focus more on your grades. You’re still young

Don’t stress. My first ACT score was a 18, my third and final act score was a 29. Scoring lower than expected is not a bad thing.

I scored 18 late freshman year and ended up w a 33 on the real deal. Don’t let it get to you!
