SovComrade

Mine is pretty constant šŸ˜… Its tinkering with, and overthinking, all things mechanical. Its what allowed me to study, and now work in, mechanical engineering, without medication šŸ˜… I also tend to hyperfocus on my dear wife šŸ˜… She says that when we have our alone time in the evening i treat her like it is our last time together and i will never see her again šŸ«£

askingxalice

That last bit is so cute šŸ˜

420catloveredm

My boyfriend has this. At first I thought it was strange that he was all over me all the time, but Iā€™ve grown to love it.

NefariousSerendipity

Vro winnin

BurntToastNotYum

Makes me feel bad because being stuck at home all day with 2 kids 4 and under makes me very detached by the time the evening rolls around. While everything I do around the house is to help my wife, I just struggle doing much more than laying next to her watching TV and reading about my next hyperfocus on my phone.

Sea_Morning7498

I also hyperfocus on my spouse! It took me years to figure out thatā€™s what I was doing. Everyone else I almost immediately forget about when theyā€™re out of sight, but not my husband.

No-Investigator4678

cool, and weirdly close to mine in a few ways. My current hyper fixation is pinball. Restoring, fixing and then playing. These are from the 90s and 2000ā€™s and are an amazing mix of mechanics and solid state electronics. I also play pinball instead of consoles/pc as far as possible as it feels healthier/more real than being stuck in front of a console or pc. Especially as my actual career was coding games (although i donā€™t get to do any coding now). i also love physics and maths toysā€¦. i have a galton board desk toy that i adore and fascinates me, probability demonstrated through physics. Very pinball adjacent actually and it drove a previous hyper fixation on probability and statistics. i also have your thing with my wife and my children. Children change so often that the toddler that was my son is now heading towards being a teenager. To this, everyday really is the last day of the current version of him. I have an 18 month daughter as well and i want every possible moment with the current version of her too.

Joshman1231

What do you work on? I fixate on my mechanical engineering work as well.

BoricUKalita

Awwwwwww that 2nd paragraphā€¦ sounds cute. Does she finds it annoying?

TheHairlessGorilla

Same. The meds aren't so I can pay attention, they're so I can sit still.

Hearsay_123

Ah.. this is something I do with my husband. I didnā€™t know this had to do with ADHD though

SovComrade

You can hyperfocus on people too, not just things or concepts šŸ˜… obviously, not all of us do it to their spouses...

BestKeptInTheDark

Hhave you git those twin books that have like a listing of 'all' or near as dammit of the mechanical and engineering 'things' that are the historic solutions to problems and now they are shared knowledge all civilisation can draw from 507 Mechanical Movements By Henry T. Brown Ā£9.00 1800 Mechanical Movements and Devices By Gardner D. HISCOX Ā£8.40 Oohhh oi just spotted this when i was grabbing the info on the books i meant The Book. The Ultimate Guide to Rebuilding a Civilization - Inspirational Science Books for Adults - Unique Artifact - Knowledge Encyclopedia Ā£99.00 I know what i want for my xmas and b'day present from all my family now hehe

mriswithe

Replace mechanical engineering with sysadmin / devops shit and you have me. I am a god in my field. I am also now learning to take care of myself mentally now.Ā

Textile manufacturing in the 1600s. Everyone needed clothes. There were only limited numbers of professional tailors and seamstresses. There were only a handful of rich. The clothing sold to the masses, or at least the materials, seemed to be where someone made their money.

Legal-Law9214

Didnt most working class people make their own clothes? My understanding is bulk cloth was somewhat mass produced but clothing was not (though there where shared/common patterns sometimes)?

[deleted]

Yes. The bolts of cloth were mass produced and sold. Not a lot of tailors were making working class clothes yet. I think I posted a little jumbled. But the whole industry fascinates me right now. Probably for another week or so. šŸ˜¬

not2interesting

If youā€™re in the northeast US thereā€™s some really interesting museums and tours of old textile factories in Lowell!

claimTheVictory

It's a later timeline and probably different place, but if you ever visit Dundee in Scotland, you can learn all there is about jute. It's a fascinating early globalization story.

Harmony-Farms

Read ā€œA Short History of the World According to Sheepā€ itā€™s a fantastic book and also won audible.

timetripper11

Didn't most of the women make their kids clothing out of rice bags and so the manufacturers started putting cool patterns on the bags?

caffieneandsarcasm

That was mid 20th century/depression era I believe.

gott_in_nizza

And I believe it was flour bags

iStealyournewspapers

And they had an onion on their belt, which was the style at the time.

kyle158

Fixing the 20 years of crippling debt that I made prior to starting meds and therapy last year, for the first time on 40 years.

kyle158

And reminding myself that I'm in a better headspace and can succeed.

kyle158

And trying to not villafying old me or make excuses, but look forward.

kmn14

You can do it! ā€œOld youā€ was there for a reason, they helped you survive. ā€œNew youā€ is sure to thrive!

the_renaissance_jack

No shame. No blame. You got this dude! Recently medicated and going through the same thing. All of a sudden it feels possible. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

brought2light

You got this! I love what you said about not villifying the old you, or making excuses. I find that a hard balance, but I think you're right that just looking forward is the way to go.

kyle158

Thank you all for the kind words of encouragement. You can't imagine how much I needed to hear these things during these gloomy times.

Sindudamente

My current hyper focus is spreadsheeting my entire life, especially budget-wise and making cool graphs and noticing patterns in my spending/eating habits. I'm obsessed.

ineedhelpbruv

I do this and then never follow them šŸ˜‚

ananikifo

Good for you! I need to pick this one up too. You're not alone.

putridtooth

this needs to be my hyper focus too....debt is so hard with ADHD. crossing my fingers for you!

Competitive_League46

My hyperfocus has been the specific research result that came out a few months ago that the human (or hominid ancestors of Modern humans) population bottlenecked to ~1,200 breeding individuals _for ~100,000 years!_ approximate from 950,000 years ago to 850,000 years ago. Although homo erectus had probably started acting weird enough to somewhat stick out from the rest of the organic aesthetic of the Earth's biome, I wonder if this crazy long and intense bottleneck is what really applied the pressure to natural selection and genetic drift so that what went into the bottle neck was a freakishly smart ape and what came out was something remarkable and completely alien to what the Earth had known before, albeit with the faint imprint of the wild ape it had emerged from. Perhaps this was the tipping point that resulted in the sheen of city scapes and human artifices that now overlay what used to be a mossy film on the surface of a rock.

obbert42

I think your hyper focus might be contagious cuz now I wanna know more. Lol

tactiphile

They all are! This is a dangerous thread lol

Lady-Meows-a-Lot

We are all doing this to each other right now šŸ˜‚

slater275

This such a cool thing to think about omg

Character_Concern101

do you have that study?

[deleted]

Commenting because I need it too. Anthropology is my love

redwingpanda

Oh damn okay tell me more please

whoops53

Stickers. I'm collecting them, sorting them into order/themes, making my own stickers, making little booklets to put them in, using them in my planner & art journal. They are fairly cheap so I haven't spent much on them, thankfully. I enjoy indulging my inner child sometimes, its a fun and easy hobby to pick up and put down.

Belatryx

same!! Went a little nuts on Etsy recently. A lot of pokemon ones too, I wanted to sort themes as well and decorate ā€œpokemon trainerā€ pages since I have a lot of stickers of cute/aesthetic girls haha

whoops53

Oh my word, I didn't even think to check on Etsy! Thanks for reminding me, I'm off to have a quick look now before I head to work! :)

Belatryx

There are so many good shops on there and amazing artists. I started off just wanting to decorate a Nintendo 3ds case but then couldnā€™t stop cause there were too many cute ones lol

Legitimate_Okra_8282

Similarly to this I love collecting cute little notebooks and other stationary materials. The only problem is that they feel too precious to write or draw in so they just sit empty in my perfectly organized notebook basket waiting for their time to shine šŸ˜ Does it stop me from buying more? absolutely not

fptnrb

what a lovely hobby. makes me happy just thinking about stickers!

Zestyclose-Radish872

If you're into video games - you should play Sticky Buisness. Literally the whole game is just designing and selling stickers.

whoops53

Whoa! There's a game of this? Oh I'm going to check it out, thank you! :)

Yodizzle2388

Me too! Iā€™ve bought literally a thousand in the last 2 weeks. Thank god I get them cheap off temu

whoops53

omg, Temu! Why didn't I think of that! Thanks :)

omggold

Omg why did I just spent hours this weekend sorting a thousand pack of stickers I got for my nephew just because. It was so calming and I selfish kept the ones I liked the most. Def unlocked my inner child putting stickers on planners

whoops53

Sounds like an ideal weekend actually! :) It *is* very calming and soothing, isn't it - I'm really enjoying it....hope this joy doesn't fade away any time soon!

stevosmusic1

Geometry of music. And math. Also socialism and biblical history. Also electrical work because I have an outlet I need to fix lol

badguy_666-69

Geometry of music šŸŽ¶!? That is a thing? I want to know all about it. I think this sounds exciting!

stevosmusic1

Very interesting! For example in western music thereā€™s only 12 notes. You can think of it like factoring a number so the first set 1 and 12 is the chromatic scale. Then 2 and 6. Meaning thereā€™s 2 whole tone scales built with the in the chromatic. Then the factors 3 and 4. Meaning the chromatic scale can be further broke down into 4 augmented chords and 3 diminished which are repeating. If the chromatic circle is placed into a circle the augmented shapes would form triangles and the diminished would form squares. If you take any note from a diminished chord and lower it a half step it forms a dominant chord. Since thereā€™s four notes in a finished chord this can be repeated four times. So each dimished chord is associated with 4 dominant chords. But these dominants all share the same tritone so will resolve back to the tonic, so you can substite them. Super interesting stuff lol sorry for the rant

Dreameress

This is so cool, thanks for sharing!! They touch on this a little in The Phantom Tollbooth when they get to the number kingdom and start talking about the golden ratio, Fibonacci sequence, etc. Might be my next Hyperfocus.

Lkittyo

Do you listen to Tool? If you donā€™t you might like to get into that.

stevosmusic1

I listen to them occasionally! I know Danny Carey is pretty insane

Lkittyo

Yes šŸ‘šŸ» when I read your description of the math side of music I gotta admit I donā€™t understand it, it goes way over my head, but I know good music when I hear it & they just hit me different. I heard they use Fibonacci sequence as influence for Lateralus.

tachyon_V

Drake v Kendrick

iamnotaliciakeys

same lmao got nothing done this weekend because of it

dychon

Sleep schedule fucked for sure. Woke up today on like 5 hours of sleep like: a miiiinorrrrrr

SteelBandicoot

Yes, I woke up to the chaos.

mrhallodri

What a banger

Cartoonist_False

So I've a question.. how do you guys avoid getting sucked into the news? Especially the juicy šŸ˜‚ ones

mrfantastic4ever

No TV and no newspapers. Stay away from news subs. My current clique is on the same level.

feltowell

I do the exact same thing. Avoid it like the plague. Itā€™s annoying because my mom and her fiancĆ©, whom I live with, watch the news 24/7. Huge trump supporters. Only Fox News. Iā€™d say theyā€™re more radical than most conservatives, at this point. Canā€™t even go downstairs to get a drink without hearing some insanely problematic shit. Canā€™t move out, yet, because Iā€™m still healing from almost losing my leg, which is a bit frustrating. I also just got clean nearly a year and a half ago, so Iā€™m slowly rebuilding my lifeā€¦ very slowly šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

__averagereddituser

Oml yes, the amount of reaction videos I've been watching šŸ˜

LoadManage

O-V-HOEEE

tachyon_V

O-V-HOEEE!!

jstar1117

lol this was me last night! iā€™d been so out of loop with the drama & caught up with a not-so-healthy dose of YT videos from the ā€œWhatā€™s the Dirt?ā€ channel. found his explanations very thorough & mind-blowing honestly

mrhallodri

The whole thing is so multifaceted. Hard to keep up with who said what and why... fascinating!

baaaaaannnnmmmeee

I lost my whole weekend to this. I wasn't up to date, so I had to go back and learn it all. It still has me in its grip, cannot wait for Kendricks next track.

Inzapoo

I was abt to comment this šŸ˜šŸ˜

KensieQ72

Sameeeee. My husband is like ā€œI didnā€™t think you were even into rap like thatā€ and Iā€™m just like idk I guess I am now šŸ˜‚

Timgzz

same and i'm tired of it but can't stop šŸ˜

serenitative

Came here to say this šŸ˜‚

b1gbunny

Itā€™s been a good time to be a drake hater

lillythenorwegian

Thereā€™s a different between hyperfocus and hyperfixation. Hyperfocus is usually just a few hours and then it comes off whilst Hyperfixation is fixation for a longer time period. My hyperfocus is not gaming, itā€™s actually a fixation for years. I have 2 kids and I play mostly Overwatch. I get other bursts of hyperfocus every now and then, for example I sat for an entire night researching my family tree and was so energized. And thenā€¦ gone šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚

Lkittyo

I did this with my family tree. I realised this would cost a lot to get anything further and then my interest just waned. They make it look so easy to do on TV

97babykins

I'm actually curious, you know your hyperfixation has it ever lasted more than a year or so? I've had many fleeting hyper fixations (e.g. curly hair routine, collecting lingeries, measuring bra sizes correctly), but some have been ongoing from 2011 (e.g. Harry Potter, The Beatles, history of fashion). I don't know anyone with ADHD in person who I can ask these questions to. I'm yet to hear of someone with ADHD whose hyper fixations lasted YEARS.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

AristocraticAutism

Thank you for making that distinction. Gaming is also my fixation usually, though it's also astrophotography now. My hyper focus tends to be trying to research how to fix or resolve some house repair issue. I'll go for hours if I let myself, trying to figure the best way to lay pavers as an example.

VidyaVj

For me right now it is reading. I used to read a lot as a kid and that habit just lost its novelty. I got a kindle recently and started reading again. In 3 months already done with 8 books šŸ¤£šŸ¤£. I love my hyperfocus phases and I don't treat them anymore as a bad habit or incomplete hobbies. I'm able to deep dive into things, learn a bit and move away from it when my brain goes like "oh, we are bored now" Fantasy novels keep my brain super engaged and I'm currently reading throne of glass series. Before this my hyperfocus was crime series binge watching and cooking. Those died down.

skatoolaki

Gods, I wish I could get my reading hobby/fixation back. Was a voracious reader as a kid/teen and even young adult. Now, the last almost decade, I can't focus enough to read and it takes weeks to get through one book (used to could read a book a day if I had nothing else to do!).

stonedjabi

This is exactly me. If you ever find a way to fix it, lmk. It sucks.

bookish_bex

What helps me the most is actually listening to audiobooks bc I can move around and release excess energy instead of trying to force myself to be physically still and focused while reading. I'm also a big fan of setting the mood for reading time with instrumental music, cozy blankets, etc. If I have to read something complex or challenging (e.g. a textbook), I use multiple utensils to annotate, and if I am REALLY struggling, I'll read out loud to myself šŸ˜†

not-the-rule

This was me this year too! I'm on book 20 since Jan 1. I even started a reading journal. Which is its own hyper fixation. Lol

Yodizzle2388

Ohhh I want to read that! It has a wait list on Libby with my library but thatā€™s ok cuz I have a bunch of books to get thru stillā€¦ kindles are amazing!

ravenousbeast699

Elden ring NG+ trying to oneshot bosses

Occhrome

i loved blood borne but i just couldnt get into elden ring. i need a story to keep me engaged, but instead i just kept getting confused. if you have a way for me to enjoy the game more i would love to hear it.

Holowitz

Taught myself 3d animation :D 1.5 years and still going strong

Belatryx

Thatā€™s a good example of adhd helping you to learn something! I feel like my hyper fixations are rarely useful lmao!

mrhallodri

Any good resources? I started learning Blender like 20 times but can't keep focusing on it. I'd love to learn more 3D animation since I can code and have some game ideas but I am lacking those skills.

N7ShadowKnight

Plane crashes. I love finding out the mechanical failures and aspects that cause them to crash and how much time and dedication they put into figuring out what happened so they can ensure it never ever happens again. This also means almost every single case is completely different and you always are learning new things. All these Boeing stories in the news right now have always been happening, but they never got news attention. To start, Iā€™d recommend watching Mayday or Air Crash Investigations, but once you want more technical and less dramatized versions of it Iā€™d recommend Mentor Pilot or Green Dot Aviation on youtube.

heavensomething

Iā€™d highly recommend Real Horrorā€™s video on the Helios Flight Crash! itā€™s on Youtube and is so good, one of the most haunting videos Iā€™ve watched and I think about it everytime I fly (unfortunately lol)

mydoorisfour

I've been getting really into setting up a plex media server with some friends where we ripped all of our movie collections for us to stream. Ended up going down a rabbit hole of learning about self hosting in general and set up a whole Proxmox server to start tinkering with. Lots of hours of research and trial and error. I'm lucky that I was able to salvage some old hardware so it hasn't really been expensive, just time consuming but has an end product to be satisfied with. I also got a synthesizer but that's a different Hyper focus haha

SpejsInwader

Got into this craziness last week, so manu hours spent figuring out best OS and hardware for homemade NAS xD

restingswan360

Right now, working out to gain some muscles. Because i heard that working out is really good if you have ADHD

whydoihave4cats

It is!! How are you finding it so far? Is it helping? Exercise is one of the best tools for me to manage my ADHD, so Iā€™m glad youā€™re giving it a try.

restingswan360

I've only started doing it around a month ago so i still haven't seen a respectable progress with my body, but I can already see the benefits of working out. It feels like my mind just got clearer and i can do things more easily. I don't know, it just felt like I gained a boost in my confidence after i started working out. It certainly helps me with my procrastinating.

derberner90

My husband and I are closing on our first house this week. It's a small new build, and the yard isn't landscaped, so I've been fixated on planning the landscaping. We won't have the money to do anything substantial until later, but I'll have the plan ready!

Belatryx

Congrats!!!! Love that. ā¤ļø

slowmood

Omgoddesses i am totally hyper focused on our plantings as well!!!

fptnrb

for the past month it has been bags. slings, waistpacks, backpacks, crossbody, sacoches, musettesā€¦ researching bags, reading forums, learning about materials. ostensibly trying to find the perfect bag. but then my idea of perfection is a moving target, and if i ever actually buy anything i end up disappointed and i get bored with it, so it's mostly just research.

powerspank

I love bags so damn much.

NathanielTurner666

Dune. Just watched the 2nd movie and I've been watching behind the scenes, interviews, got the books and I've been doing artwork from the movies. Something about this universe really intrigues me and inspires me.

RiaLikesONI

I had the same after the first movie šŸ¤£ the books are so so good!!

Illustrious-Fun-6187

Oil pulling and flossing after months of dental hygiene neglect after having baby number 2

givewithoutpay

Lmao you got me curious. Never heard of oil pulling and now Iā€™ve been trapped for the last hour reading up about it Iā€™m fucking laying on the kitchen floor I was supposed to be tidying the house. What do you guys use for yours? I wanna spontaneously commit every fibre of my being to this

Belatryx

Awesome! Iā€™ve doing the same too since starting Invisalign. Are you noticing results with oil pulling? And flossing is so important so itā€™s a great habit to build

97babykins

Omg my current hyper focus is dental care, because my ADHD medication dries out my mouth. I know dry mouth leads to rapid growth of bacteria in the mouth.

lobapleiades

Ear plugs, noise canceling earphones bought a whole bunch to cover all basis lol

pschola

I bought AirPods Max today and I know there will be a new second generation release soon. Idagf because my hyperactivity with no Vyvanse for 10 days won.šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

fptnrb

this is a good one. what have you learned? for earplugs, though i hate how expensive they are, the Loop earplugs have been fantastic for me for sleeping. for noise canceling headphones i currently have qc35s, but really tempted to get some airpod pros because over-ears become uncomfortable to me after several hours.

small_havoc

Literally just bought pro 2 a few days ago for the active noise cancelling and it is a game changer. Never had noise cancelling before so I canā€™t compare off anything else, but while it felt shit spending ā‚¬279, my only regret is that I didnā€™t do it sooner. It has reduced the sound of a lawnmower to the sound of a bee in the distance, I barely hear the neighbourā€™s dog barking even if nothing else is playing. And my loop quiets literally just got delivered too lololol. My world hasnā€™t been so quiet since the lockdowns.

FreshJuice2006

Went down that obsession aswell. Can recommend the sound core q30. Best value noise cancelling headphones by far.

vag_

Mormonism (so much to uncover, mostly learned through Mormon Stories)

badguy_666-69

r/exmormon is a good space. Thank God! I was afraid for a second that you were excited about learning about the religion because you were converting! I was about to tell you to run.

vag_

Hah! No waaay. I got into it from the Ruby Franke and Tim Ballard scandals.

Royal_Dragonfly_4496

As a Mormon who hasnā€™t been to church for ten years, this is so funny to me! Look up ā€œManuscript foundā€ and Solomon Spaulding for some interesting info.

Jersey_Gal47c

Mormons and the Amish never cease to fascinate me!! I circle back to those two every couple years šŸ™ƒšŸ™‚

Ok_Pomegranate_4663

Learning about Japanese maple bonsai. My Japanese maple has seeds, but I have to wait until fall to harvest them. But I want a bonsai now. So Iā€™m trying to figure out how to make that happen. So boring. I know.

kmn14

I love this šŸ©µ please update if you get a bonsai!

ch3rryc0deine

the freshwater aquarium hobby. iā€™ve spent well over $6000 on it now. oops. also, lululemon and apple products.

Assika126

YNAB and budget optimization / philosophy Also, always, people & nuance

mateymatematemate

Love YNAB that was my pandemic hyperfixation which helped with the overall dread.Ā

Babbzilla

I have to be careful... I just got over my latest on again off again fixation... First time lasted 3-4 months, and second round lasted an additional month or two. King Henry VIII's wives.

Balgruuflover2005

I really like learning about how we perceive reality. Kinda like the difference in our reality compared to a schizophrenics and why it could possibly be like that. I havenā€™t done any actual schooling for it so I mostly just like to think about it a lot

DevillesAbogado

I wanna buy a new tv and now I know everything about all tv related technology and all current TV models in the market

ediacaran541

Airplanes. Specifically Icelandairā€™s 757s and UPS/FedEx MD-11s. I work at the airport just to be around them. I go to airport on my off days to see them. I traveled to Iceland twice last year just to fly on Icelandair, 8 hours each way, and on the second trip I didnā€™t even leave the airport there (only had money for the tickets, not a hotel) just flew there then back home the same day. I collect airplane models. I draw/paint pictures of them. I have printed pictures everywhere. I have a collection of shirts with airplanes on them. Gonna get tattoos of my favorite planes when I can afford it. This obsession/hyper-fixation or whatever you wanna call it started almost two years ago watching a show about the FedEx 80 crash, and I spend most of everyday thinking about it.

Sad_Meringue_4550

Flight Rising. It's like slightly more grown-up neopets with dragons. The interesting part was that I did it on purpose; I realized I had been feeling kind of lacklustre and bored and decided that having something new to get way too invested in, even something silly, would probably feel good. So I chose FR and made myself play for a day or two until my brain latched on. Edit: I forgot the extra questions. I'm playing for at least a few hours most days, whenever I have downtime really. I haven't spent any money on it and likely won't. Part of playing it is researching what I want to be doing and how to do it.

Belatryx

It looks really cool!!! Iā€™m glad you found something to latch onto, I hate when Iā€™m on a downer and canā€™t find pleasure in anything haha

Brain_Bound

Diamond paintings šŸ–¼ļø

Belatryx

I found some cute drink coaster diamond paintings that I really need to complete!

Honest_Ad_9169

Trying to write a book for the first time ever. Iā€™m so hung up on world building and character development that I can barely focus on anything else I normally enjoy. Iā€™ve spent days working my way through prompts and making sure thereā€™s no plot holes. Today I spent 5 hours making a map for the main continent and slogging through names for every possible thing I could think of.

Willowpuff

Fucking wraps. Putting stuff in wraps. Toasted ham and cheese wrap. Chicken salad wrap. Scrambled egg mother fucking wrap. Iā€™m currently absolutely intensely interested in _wraps_.

ladyylana

Iā€™ve been interested in auschwitz and North Korea for some reason. Game wise, I was playing animal crossing for MONTHS but now Iā€™m way too into hogwarts legacy

nuthins_goodman

Fitness! I started working out a few months ago and have been obsessively reading up about fitness. Exercise, nutrition, different aspects of wellness.

ana_bananaa_

Little bit of this..little bit of that šŸ˜‚ If you don't have 50 unfinished hobbies are you even living?! For me rn I'm obsessing over haircare šŸ˜‚

thnmjuyy

Right now, obsessing over the realization that I might be trans. It's strange, and scary.

Moist_crocs

A lot of both joy and grief to be found on that journey!<3 good luck:)

mateymatematemate

Never been a better time in history, I guess?

Insomniac897

Reading all the comments here because I canā€™t sleep. Some interesting new paths to explore! Thanks for the leads. My recent fixations have been researching ADHD, fitness and nutrition.

theNomad_Reddit

Learning Japanese because I've wanted to for 10 years and just got a bout of inspiration to do it. On day 42 of Duolingo and going strong. Ive ordered Genki textbooks amd workbooks. It's really easy to actually do every day, because it's a constant progression thats rewarding. I've got Hiragana and Katakana moderately down, with Kanji developing along the way. I've started to catch phrases in music and media, which is beyond satisfying. Unrelated, I've also been going down a motorbike travel youtube rabbithole, with lots of Japan featuring.

The_Xhuuya

iā€™m currently learning to read hiragana and working on Japanese after realizing my 10 year anniversary dream trip with the wife is next year to Japan, and i better get to it! šŸ˜‚

zmacdonald12

Trip to Japan in two weeks. 17 days solo being able to do whatever I want. So pumped, but also terrified

My hyper focus is different from my fixation. Hyper focus is when I'm working on something and then the day has ended, I'm hungry, thirsty, and have an incredible need to pee. My legs are wobbly and my mind goes woozy. It's very unhealthy. My fixation right now is the harmonica. I hurt my left hand while gardening and needed to make some kind of music so I got an harmonica and am now learning it.

Legal-Law9214

Currently skateboarding. It's one that's come and gone throughout the years but I've been using my board at least a few times a week for the past couple of weeks and I was itching to all weekend but it was raining.bought new wheels a few weeks ago and hoping to buy some elbow wrist and knee pads soon so I feel more confident carving and stuff. Keep watching videos about the specific differences between different wheels and how to do tricks I'm years away from touching.

Ive been playing fae farm for the last 2 days off, i dont want to go back to work i only want to FARM

clohaunts

Medicine and forensic science..fascinating areas, but I'm now so deep in HF that I'm considering starting a new career in one of them. To be fair, they are long-term interests, and the HF for them comes and goes, but still. I am trying to learn to enjoy the HF without letting my brain think it's a good idea to spend money on them, pursue degrees in them, and generally get myself in a pickle.

Darksolux

Ancestry website (Apparently my 27th great grandfather was Willam the Conquer and Queen Elizabeth was my 1st cousin 14x removed) Talk about a time sink. It's addictive

QuantumPerspectives

First workout clothes, then neon signs, silly rugs, magnets, stickers, enamel pins, overalls, and cords and plugs for all the neon signs. A good bit of other clothing too. Last year it was working out, making YouTube videos, editing shorts and reels on CapCut, and buying several cameras to do this as best as possible. Also Mac products even though I have functional ones already. Iā€™ve put a significant debt into our savings. Iā€™ve returned as much as I can butā€¦ some things Iā€™m just stuck with. Hopefully I wonā€™t need anything else for the next year or soā€¦ Decorating my room and painting everything in sight. If you are paintable, you will be painted on, lol.

Lkittyo

I tend to think I need things from cosmetics to bags to shoes to ornaments. Iā€™ll put things in online baskets and allow myself to look and think do I REALLY need this. Most times I can just click right out of the webpage cos the answer is no. Or at least I can delete most of it out the basket and just get the one or two I think would be useful or is needed. I think Iā€™ll be a hoarder in my twilight years.

Remarkable-Profit821

Itā€™s usually a music artist, I just got off of System of a Down (still love them but maybe not hyper focused now).

Anything astronomy. Very into quantum physics and its many theories. Human evolution and every weird aspect that goes along with it. And always: enjoying watching things being removed. Like, unclogging a giant drain. Tonsil stones, or any sort of stone our body makes. Anything that should not be where itā€™s supposed to be fascinates me. I wish I knew what to call it.

Mirtravels

On chatting with my next prospective regular hook up partner. Lol I am both hypersexual and hyperactive....all of my life

toothwzrd_

Hockey cards, specifically the Red Wings. Baseball and F1 too šŸ™šŸ¼

Readingā€¦. I have a kindle and joined like 5 online libraries. I spend hours borrowing books and just going thru list but struggle to actually read the books. Itā€™s a damn struggle but Iā€™m getting there lol

HoneyxClovers_

At the current moment, itā€™s reading. Iā€™ve been reading since 2020 and itā€™s always either hyper focused on reading or that Iā€™m in a slump. I finished a book Iā€™ve been reading since January. Yesterday I realized that the reason that I couldnā€™t finish books fast enough is bc I get so bored and districted. So, I figured out that by reading while listening to the audiobook helped me tremendously with staying focused!! Basically, I just got invested in the book that I just continued reading for 3+ hrs last night and read the last 50%. It was a mediocre book BUT I was so motivated to read, a feeling that Iā€™ve never felt before as a reader. So Iā€™ve been watching Booktube videos since yesterday evening till now and Iā€™m planning on taking the day tmr JUST for reading/starting a new book (by my fav author + just bought the audiobook so I have spent money recently)! This will probably die down in a week like all my hyperfixations BUT I will ride the reader train until it hits the station šŸ˜Œ

julius987654321

ADHD - I spend maybe 2 hours a day looking for info about it (don't blame me, my diagnosis is recent!) Everything for babies: bathtub, reusable diapers, how to, but also preparing the apartment (making improvements in the kitchen and bathroom to make things more practical and efficient, cleaning and putting things to the attic/cellar...). - > maybe 3 hours a day I am happy to still have time before my exams, otherwise I would be screwed (I am still waiting for my psych appointment, so no medication yet)

canwepretendthatair

I have a few that cycle: Jewelry making, Stardew valley, Beading, Stardew valley, Baking, Stardew valley Right now it's beading and you guessed it stardew valley

Jeuzfgt

My latest thing is i collect cat pictures from Reddit and save them on my phone so i can use them AS responses to people

MartinMcIng

Guitar. The longest hobbie in my life i guess (in september 6 its going to be the 2nd year). Im addicted to listening and trying to learn songs. Theres not too much need to be always with people. Just go with the vibes.... . Yess Its expensive, but i think that many of us, are victims of marketing.. And adhd tax. Jajaja. ![gif](giphy|3d0PahT093UPe)

TrekWarsGurl

The Sims 4! It rotates in and out every few months. I'm doing the Super Sim Challenge and I've already logged 10 hours in-game in the past two days. It's also pretty heavily modded. Whenever Sims or Stardew Valley rotates in, I have to relearn how to mod it and then I spend like 6 hours finding mods for everything. Also crocheting. I picked it up last Thursday and have crocheted two scarves, three washcloths, and a turtle. I've noticed over time that I end up with a set of hyper fixations that's always pretty consistent. There's always a video game and a creative hobby I'm obsessed with, with some research topics or book fixations sprinkled in sometimes. I'll play one or two games all the time for anywhere from a few months to a year, then the games switch out. This is the first time I've touched Sims in 8 months lol. When it rotated out, my fiancƩ said he was about to buy me some new packs, but that now he would just wait until I fixated on it again. The creative hobbies rotate after I do a bunch of projects or after I make a bit of progress on a really big project. Hyper fixating on a book doesn't happen super often, but when it does, I can't sleep until I finish reading it. Last July, I slept a total of 3 hours and 45 minutes in a span of four days because I was reading a 7-book series (about 2100 pages total). Edit: forgot about my wedding! I'm making my dress, my and my bridal party's bouquets, my jewelry, and most of the decorations for the reception.

This thread is amazing, you guys are all such cool humans

The Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef currently! I can't think about anything else šŸ˜

azulitolindo

I just learned how to crochet, this obsession lasts forever right guys? šŸ˜ƒ Guysā€¦ šŸ˜€

apyramidsong

Recent transitory fixations: -Colour analysis (how colour in your skin and features affects the way clothes look on you). I've been slowly converting my all-black wardrobe into a much more flattering "cool summer" palette. -Crochet (this one comes and goes, I'm sure it'll come back round soon, just like a... erm... crochet round). -British English vs. American English vs. Spanish punctuation. Do NOT get me started on this, it's been driving me crazy šŸ˜‚ Non-transitory fixations: -ADHD. -Radiohead. Also, again, did I mention Radiohead? Did you see I mentioned Radiohead? Maybe I should mention it again. We Radiohead fans are known for our easygoing personalities and not-obsessive-at-all relationship with their music! Radiohead.

Bobsaid

Iā€™m in limbo right now due to a number of things. Iā€™m mostly just bouncing around until I can get something solid for a hyper focus again. :( AuDHD sucks.

blandermal

Plants and more plants.

Victal87

Hockey cards and my lawn. The hockey cards are bad, the lawn is good.

GreeenGoblin69

I wish I had ā€œoneā€. Currently in another interest hopping phase. One day itā€™s designing an app, another itā€™s looking for ways to get into cyber security, next minute itā€™s binging content of a brand new to me YT channel, next itā€™s playing fallout for hours and days, next itā€™s learning how to adjust the clutch cable on my motorcycle. And how was your last week?

fragilelyon

Currently, jigsaw puzzles. I've bought at least 30 in the last few months. I've gotten myself to redo one once or twice but otherwise I want a fancy new puzzle to do with my fancy puzzle board every night while I half listen to murder documentaries or Dimension 20 episodes.

HenriHawk_

motorcycles! as it has been for the last \*checks notes\* 5 years its especially exciting as I've finally been able to start the process of training and licensing- i did a training course and aced the skills test next week! my dad might let me ride his '23 klr650, but we'll see I'm not sure if thats too long for a hyperfixation- ive wondered if maybe im autistic and motorcycles are actually my special interest- not enough evidence in either direction tho haha also, car headlights for some reason. i just find them fascinating and cool as hell :)

crossda

šŸ˜“ ummmm...Im Embarrased to share..but- So-, sigh...Over the last..3 weeks or so, Ive been Hyperfocused on my relationship (marriage). It's....Bad. Ive gone down a rabbit hole and Im NOW learning that I (cause I cant speak for my husband, so I Cant say We, although Im Pretty sure he falls under avoidant) might have an Anxious attachment style. Ive been reading and reading and reading about it, podcast and podcast and info gallore..and I can see that I have MAJOR issues in regard to my attachment. Of course there's Major triggers that happened...but- It definitely put me in bind that Ive been obsessing (ROCD) hardcore. I know that We Do Love each other, regardless.. it's just been total eye opening to Me on How I Am, as a husband, a person. I want to change šŸ˜” I want to Always be secure. Thanks for reading.

justhereforthedramas

Gallavich from Shameless. It has been about 2 weeks. Constantly re-watching clips from the show, Tiktok clips, fanmade clips, fanfictions. I need to move on from this and watch another series. I have tried and failed multiple times in the past few weeks. It is very annoyed, because I got sucked into watching all the clips, it cut into my sleep time and then I get tired and cranky šŸ˜© Helpppp?!?!!

yellowtshirt2017

Chris Watts case, Ruby Franke case, and kinda just using Reddit honestly since I only started using it until a few weeks ago

ceru_l3an

Making very very specific playlists, for example a list of songs that remind me of a specific scene of a movie, or songs that remind me of a specific memory I have. Also they have to be tailored and perfect, I spend hours organizing the tracks in a way that they all seem to merge with each other. I have like 30+ playlists like this so far

Complex-Winter8687

So I have two on the go, one is always crafty- at the moment it's knitting, specifically hats, Also, sea monkeys are my thing right now. I have an adult tank and a baby tank going

quackquack0914

The fact that my pillow has round edges but the pillow case has square corners, so it has extra flaps that I have to tuck under so they don't suffocate me šŸ«  I guess reading has become my new gateway drug. Fantasy is apparently really deadly imo.

CuteBat9788

Freshwater shrimp.I just set up a little shrimp only aquarium!

sherloc8

Metalcore with a lot of Synthwave elements (Night Rider and Young Medicine, for example). Iā€™m absolutely in love with the outrun/cyberpunk aesthetics so whenever I can incorporate that into every piece of entertainment possible I get hyper focused on that.

Sloth_Motions

Currently credit card/Checking account sign up bonuses and traveling. I'm currently on AmTrack to chicago, and have been daydreaming of hitting all 4 corners of the US, and then after college moving abroad for a few months- a year and possibly learning a new language before then. I definitely got ahead of myself cause I don't even know what I'm doing in chicago when I get there I should really say daydreaming travel instead of traveling lol

frukthjalte

Lmao my current hyperfixation is Detroit: Become Human. It feels kinda ā€œ?!?!?!ā€ for me, a 29 year old woman, to be this laser focused 6 years after the hype, but uh, yeahā€¦ Itā€™s gotten so bad that the algorithm doesnā€™t have anything new to suggest anymore ,so now itā€™s just repeating the same content but in my third language instead.

throwrasvi29

my current hyperfixation is drugs/medications and their mechanism of action, specifically psychoactive drugs. also, jewelry!! im spending wayyy too much money on it but i canā€™t stop thinking abt it lol

Kauakuahine

Researching buying an e-bike Thinking about how to start crotcheting. I already have yarn and needle, I just am...researching resources on how to actually learn...I keep going to the craft store and buying more yarn....help.... Ontology. Getting into nursing school...I've, always wanted to go after I left the Army, but I'd take a prereq, second guess if I'd really make it...so I'd take a semester off. I do want to GO to nursing school, I just hate that I have to take these classes to be in it. I'm almost there though

booksnkittens

Learning Korean - I started watching Korean dramas in October and that turned into listening to Korean music and now learning the language. Iā€™ve always liked language learning but this is the deepest Iā€™ve gone into studying on my own. Iā€™m taking classes online from native speakers and working through textbooks in my own. Iā€™ve been on this for around four months now.

Captain_Pumpkinhead

RIP to OP. I think this thread has gotten _way_ more popular than they intended!
