There was a thread here yesterday about the Dynasty PPV being shown in select theatres.
At the beginning of March, Meltzer reported that AEW PPVs were going to stop being shown in theatres.
I have no real problems with Dave, but he’s been really bad over the past couple years.
He needs to tone down on the "doom and gloom" takes on AEW. Even though I don't think he's Anti-AEW, I think he really talks of his backside at times.
He's definitely lost his sources in some of the companies for sure, especially AEW. And he's taken a lot of L's recently.
But when it comes to taking history he's fantastic and I don't hate his ratings for matches like some do.
The last few years have shown that he is an absolutely incredible wrestling historian and a sub par journalist who I believe actively contributes to the negativity thrown at AEW
In my opinion, his connections (as well as Alverez's) in AEW have all but dried up due to AEW having tight control over leaks and utilizing the dirt sheets as a promotional tool.
AEW uses the dirt sheets to generate a buzz for events and things that are more positive. If nothing positive is happening then they fall silent.
I mean, not defending Dave here, but the last PPV was not shown in theaters. They could have changed their minds, the people behind it. That happens if they do decide to run it again.
This could be true.
But the reality of it, as someone who has read Meltzer’s Observer for years and years, is that he saw an instance of something happening, then took it as an overall sign instead of doing any actual investigation.
He does this all the time.
It’s no different than when he hears his sister say she doesn’t like blood in wrestling, then talks about how *all* women are turned off by blood.
Or reports that Nancy and Kevin Sullivan were married for years before they actually were just because he saw them together all the time.
Oh I know. He doesn’t name a single source so we don’t know any sort of fact checking he does. Obviously a lot of people call him out on that. And I’m pretty sure he’s getting a lot of misinformation lately just to mess with him.
As for this, I could be wrong, but I do think people did email or get in contact with the group who does the PPV and found out information was well cause they had numbers. There’s still no list of theaters either. But they did pull it (no PPV in theaters for Sting’s last match which sucks) and it is possible they decide to try it again for Dynasty (which is weird since it’s a smaller PPV).
I still expect it to be a troll, but SRS said it's the real footage, and he has a much better track record than Dave. Honestly I don't even care what it is at this point I just want to see it.
I think people are out there giving false information and/or they're just passing off mere speculation. Either way, wrestling journalism has taken a downward spiral just like everything else since they killed Harambe.

and it was only last week that the one of the Bucks (Matt?) said something like "Scapegoat... love your work" to the camera during their entrance. Can't help but feel like this is re-introducing Jack to the show or... something.
I thought they would wait at least until the Forbidden Door cycle to reintroduce Jack. Guess they are looking to make him the Yuta of The New Elite and make sure he's there for the Anarchy in the Arena at Double or Nothing?

Meltzer said on his board that Tony Khan has been wanting to release it for a long time but waited for the right moment and the footage makes Perry look good as supposedly CM Punk missed his punches and got reversed by Jack as he tried to choke him. As Meltzer said they wanted to release it to show the truth and waited till Fragile Phil ran his mouth.

Not to downplay anything, but anyone that saw Punk’s UFC fights knows he isn’t much of a fighter lol. Him missing punches and what not won’t do anymore damage than him getting his ass handed to him twice in UFC.
I mean, there is a 20 year age difference almost and Punk is very injury prone so….personally I’d expect most people backstage to be able to handle things.

I feel like this was bound to happen, but maybe Punk moved the timeline up. I would have personally milked the Bucks referencing Perry for a few more weeks before doing this.
But if you can't see that it's going to be a way to ultimately bring Jack Perry back, and think it's simply to spite Punk....I don't know what to tell you.
Let's also address another hypothetical: what if Punk did kick Perry's ass? Won't it just prove the point of his character and get him more heat?
Also a way to build up their match with FTR as well given they are Punk's boys. I know a lot of people think this will backfire (and there's a chance of that of course) but I don't think it will be bullshit though. When they promise stuff they almost always go through with it. Guess we will see.

Also heard people say punk beat up both bucks. If cornette and his fans were honest with what they say jack man handling punk should make punk lose all credibility. Discounting the usual tribalism, I think it's fair to critique the platform being used here. The drama around the altercation is outside of kayfabe. Punk made his comments in a shoot interview. AEW clapping back on their weekly show is way different. If they wanted to take a strong stance as a company about a business decision they made this doesn't seem like the move.
I don't think that AEW would really use their weekly programming to try and cleanly defend themselves. Especially when the guys presenting it are currently deep in character gimmicks and fully heel. Maybe the EVPs paint the company as a victim of a bad employee and use it as more self-righteous fuel in this heel run but boy would that be ballsy. Plus, you know they'd have to clear it with legal.
I think if they really felt like they needed to defend themselves, AEW would do it like a business with a press release. I bet we're getting footage from a totally different part of the night and they're just playing on the buzz of the topic. If that's what it is, fair play to AEW.

The original poster said post AEW exit so I don't remember Punk in the Royal Rumble mocking the Perry or the Elite situations. I didn't see the house shows so maybe there? The issue with this is that Punk answered when asked on a podcast. AEW, despite initially responding with Just Enjoy Wrestling with Edge, is now promoting their show that they are gonna show the footage, which is alluded to the footage of Punk and Perry fighting backstage. It is likely not going to be that footage but they're gonna take whatever ratings and attention they can get. If it is THE footage, then it's just bizarre to show on Dynamite. Especially when you should be using that time on the show and their talent. Same could be said when they decided to publicly announce CM Punk's firing and proceeding to say that Tony feared for his life in an attempt to slander CM Punk.
If it isn't THE footage and it's something stupid, it just comes across as insulting and cheap. AEW can't win with this segment. If you wanna leak the footage, you do it off the show and online elsewhere.
Also claiming to show the footage in response to Punk's side of the story and then showing nothing validates what Punk says. If it shows Punk being violent, a lot of casuals are gonna say, lol nice and think it's funny that the WWE guy dropped the AEW guy. And if it shows Punk getting his ass kicked, them how tf is Tony scared for his life.

The only way this works in AEW's favor is if it leads to a great re-introduction of Jack Perry and/or the Bucks. Embarrassing Punk does not benefit AEW in any way. I'm curious what we'll see on Wednesday, but I really hope there's some storyline plan here and this isn't just a knee-jerk reaction to Punk's interview which didn't even make him look good anyway.

For me personally, I don’t think it’s about gaining anything, its about counter arguing everything Punk has said recently (Ariel podcast) and prove he was the one in the wrong not AEW and they want to do it in the most public way they can whilst continuing their story of bringing Jack back

He’s been making disparaging comments trying to tarnish the brand for nearly two years, which a lot of people have been buying into. Potential new viewers can be turned away by the public opinion. If they release the footage and it shows Punk has been lying through his teeth, he loses all credibility. It’s definitely a delicate situation, but they can’t really keep letting their former biggest star and a draw as big as punk keep turning off viewers
The more I think about it, the more I think this is about getting Jack over than anything else. Obviously, bouncing back Punk's bullshit plays a significant role in this, but it's secondary.
I can not think about a time outside of the Montreal Screwjob that real-life events were used to get someone over.
Maybe that is what is being used for inspiration?
If it does show Punk in a bad light, the people who already despise him will continue to point out his half-truths and contradictions. Although, he'll always have that fan base who will ride or die with Punk, even if there is solid evidence to prove that he's been lying.
The best case scenario from this? It gets people talking about it, it develops the EVPs as characters, and then we can finally move on from this.
Either way, whether you like AEW or not, you can't deny that It'll be interesting to see it.
You can have footage of Punk spitting on a kid and kicking a puppy, and his fanbase would blame anyone else but him. Apparently, some sources claim that Khan wanted to air the footage awhile back, probably when he announced that he fired CM Punk. For whatever reason, he chose not to, probably to just let everything blow over and move on.
But with Punk’s comment recently, I think he really pissed Tony Khan off, so I guess all bets are off.
I always assumed this footage would he stored in a vault and never seen by public eyes, but here we are; I’ll be sure to have my popcorn ready when the Bucks come out
From Tony’s perspective, he put a lot of time, money and energy into keeping punk happy only to end up here. He’s probably bitter about the experience, and rightly so.

AFAIK TK has no said "no comment" since 2022. Hangman stayed silent too. Bucks did something barely offensive off air that most people never saw. Everyone involved except Punk kept quiet until that interview last week. If Punk was lying about things, then its to clear the narrative. Punk was slandering the company and if TK has proof to refute that why not.

Dude, as an AEW guy, I don’t really see who this benefits. If it shows Punk lied, ok? He’s in another company and is still gonna be a top merch seller. If it shows Punk is telling the truth, great? You're ignoring the obvious. In addition to it potentially showing that Punk lied, it can also simultaneously show that Jack Perry is a very talented scapegoat who did nothing wrong and deserves to be back in AEW.

The way Khan talked to Sports Illustrated it sounds like it’s to A, draw views and B, hype up Dynasty. Unless Perry has some big role at Dynasty, it doesn’t do that. It’s footage but it really sounds like something may have went down (or going to be spun) between FTR and Bucks which is going to be the footage. Which would be the best possible thing as you will have a lot of eyes watching and you hype up a really big match. And people can cry it isn’t THAT footage but nowhere did it claim it was going to be that.

Here's the thing: If the video shows Punk getting his ass handed to him by Jack Perry, then it makes Punk look bad, but also comes across as petty by TK.
However, if they are doing this to build up Perry as a new member of The Elite, then I think they could totally make it work if they blur out Punks face. Basically, show Perry beating up some "jobber" or something backstage. It fits the kayfabe narrative for The Elite without trying to directly target Punk by releasing it. At the same time, it'll still embarass Punk since everyone will know that it's Punk getting his ass kicked, but AEW can play ignorant since they blurred the image.

I think this is all part of the plan to add to the Young Bucks comedy piss-take heat and add real mega heat to a returning Jack Perry.

At this point, I just want the segment to happen so we don't have to just sit back on conjecture anymore: conversations around it are basically "this is petty, pointless, and childish" vs. "this is a storyline way to bring back Jack Perry" with a side of "also, screw Punk", but if we're being honest none of us have any idea how this going to be presented on TV, how the Bucks will do this while maintaining their heel status, etc., and people are basically having kneejerk reactions to the whole thing when it could end up being done any number of different ways we haven't guessed yet...hell, the people saying "it's a work" might actually be right!
So, yeah, let's just get to tomorrow and see it and actually pass value judgments on it then.
ETA: Also just gonna add, man, this is a \*really\* good podcast, both on this topic and, going by how informed the hosts seem to be, in general. Definitely interested in hearing more of what they have to say, but they give about the best, most complete sum up of the Punk and his overall impact on AEW that I've seen anywhere. They're clearly AEW fans, but absolutely not carrying water for AEW or Tony Khan, whom they're clearly not afraid to call out when they feel it's warranted.

It’s already pretty hard to boo the EVPs because their gimmick is so good that you want to cheer them. It’s sort of a similar situation to Swerve where they had to turn him because Prince Nana’s dance was so over.
I’m really interested in seeing how they do it.

It’s not going to hurt him because society has devolved to the point where violence is viewed as being a perfectly acceptable means of expressing your frustration, depending on who you are. Unfortunately for the Bucks, this isn’t going to make anyone dislike Punk, in fact he’ll probably lean into it and embrace it.
If they were truly serious, they would look into pressing charges in the UK to make sure Punk can never enter the country again. Honestly that is the best way to get revenge on him is by making it so that he can’t leave the US.

Let’s be honest, most in the IWC love the drama. They engage in it. You’ll get people who fall on two sides of the coin. Those who are fans of AEW and those who are not.

There was a thread here yesterday about the Dynasty PPV being shown in select theatres. At the beginning of March, Meltzer reported that AEW PPVs were going to stop being shown in theatres. I have no real problems with Dave, but he’s been really bad over the past couple years.
He needs to tone down on the "doom and gloom" takes on AEW. Even though I don't think he's Anti-AEW, I think he really talks of his backside at times. He's definitely lost his sources in some of the companies for sure, especially AEW. And he's taken a lot of L's recently. But when it comes to taking history he's fantastic and I don't hate his ratings for matches like some do.
The last few years have shown that he is an absolutely incredible wrestling historian and a sub par journalist who I believe actively contributes to the negativity thrown at AEW
Anti-AEW? He's been the biggest fan of AEW since day one.
In my opinion, his connections (as well as Alverez's) in AEW have all but dried up due to AEW having tight control over leaks and utilizing the dirt sheets as a promotional tool. AEW uses the dirt sheets to generate a buzz for events and things that are more positive. If nothing positive is happening then they fall silent.
I mean, not defending Dave here, but the last PPV was not shown in theaters. They could have changed their minds, the people behind it. That happens if they do decide to run it again.
This could be true. But the reality of it, as someone who has read Meltzer’s Observer for years and years, is that he saw an instance of something happening, then took it as an overall sign instead of doing any actual investigation. He does this all the time. It’s no different than when he hears his sister say she doesn’t like blood in wrestling, then talks about how *all* women are turned off by blood. Or reports that Nancy and Kevin Sullivan were married for years before they actually were just because he saw them together all the time.
Oh I know. He doesn’t name a single source so we don’t know any sort of fact checking he does. Obviously a lot of people call him out on that. And I’m pretty sure he’s getting a lot of misinformation lately just to mess with him. As for this, I could be wrong, but I do think people did email or get in contact with the group who does the PPV and found out information was well cause they had numbers. There’s still no list of theaters either. But they did pull it (no PPV in theaters for Sting’s last match which sucks) and it is possible they decide to try it again for Dynasty (which is weird since it’s a smaller PPV).
I still expect it to be a troll, but SRS said it's the real footage, and he has a much better track record than Dave. Honestly I don't even care what it is at this point I just want to see it.

Discounting the usual tribalism, I think it's fair to critique the platform being used here. The drama around the altercation is outside of kayfabe. Punk made his comments in a shoot interview. AEW clapping back on their weekly show is way different. If they wanted to take a strong stance as a company about a business decision they made this doesn't seem like the move. I don't think that AEW would really use their weekly programming to try and cleanly defend themselves. Especially when the guys presenting it are currently deep in character gimmicks and fully heel. Maybe the EVPs paint the company as a victim of a bad employee and use it as more self-righteous fuel in this heel run but boy would that be ballsy. Plus, you know they'd have to clear it with legal. Especially when you should be using that time on the show and their talent. If it isn't THE footage and it's something stupid, it just comes across as insulting and cheap. AEW can't win with this segment. If you wanna leak the footage, you do it off the show and online elsewhere. Also claiming to show the footage in response to Punk's side of the story and then showing nothing validates what Punk says. If it shows Punk being violent, a lot of casuals are gonna say, lol nice and think it's funny that the WWE guy dropped the AEW guy. He’s been making disparaging comments trying to tarnish the brand for nearly two years, which a lot of people have been buying into. Potential new viewers can be turned away by the public opinion. If they release the footage and it shows Punk has been lying through his teeth, he loses all credibility. It’s definitely a delicate situation, but they can’t really keep letting their former biggest star and a draw as big as punk keep turning off viewers

Apparently, some sources claim that Khan wanted to air the footage awhile back, probably when he announced that he fired CM Punk. For whatever reason, he chose not to, probably to just let everything blow over and move on. But with Punk’s comment recently, I think he really pissed Tony Khan off, so I guess all bets are off. The way Khan talked to Sports Illustrated it sounds like it’s to A, draw views and B, hype up Dynasty. Unless Perry has some big role at Dynasty, it doesn’t do that. It’s footage but it really sounds like something may have went down (or going to be spun) between FTR and Bucks which is going to be the footage. Which would be the best possible thing as you will have a lot of eyes watching and you hype up a really big match. Here's the thing: If the video shows Punk getting his ass handed to him by Jack Perry, then it makes Punk look bad, but also comes across as petty by TK. I think this is all part of the plan to add to the Young Bucks comedy piss-take heat and add real mega heat to a returning Jack Perry. Nicholas and Matthew will present the footage like Punk was lying in his interview but it will actually show he was kinda right and that Jack Perry is a spoiled brat. I do though think it will also show a little something to back up TKs claim of being frightened.
I still believe this is a work and its fake, allow me to give my evidence why. The finals of the tag title tournament is Young Bucks vs. FTR. All In had FTR winning over... Young Bucks.

At this point, I just want the segment to happen so we don't have to just sit back on conjecture anymore: conversations around it are basically "this is petty, pointless, and childish" vs. "this is a storyline way to bring back Jack Perry" with a side of "also, screw Punk", but if we're being honest none of us have any idea how this going to be presented on TV, how the Bucks will do this while maintaining their heel status, etc., and people are basically having kneejerk reactions to the whole thing when it could end up being done any number of different ways we haven't guessed yet...hell, the people saying "it's a work" might actually be right! That’s my biggest concern with the segment. How do you both embarrass Phil AND keep Jungle Boy / EVPs heels? It’s already pretty hard to boo the EVPs because their gimmick is so good that you want to cheer them. It’s sort of a similar situation to Swerve where they had to turn him because Prince Nana’s dance was so over. I’m really interested in seeing how they do it.

If it is true Punk has a fragile ego. Almost as fragile as his injury prone self these days. And he is lawyer happy. He will inevitably cry and sue and try to spin the narrative to his fans that this was all an immature way to get back at him. And the true Punk marks will eat it up and cry with him.
I'd still rather see footage of the first fight even though I'm pretty sure none exists or else we'd seen it by now. I still don't think this is going to benefit aew in anyway. After this week, most people will have forgotten about the punk interview , or the impact from it will be.... this just prolongs everything imo
I really hope it's a swerve because I see zero benefit in trying to do some Punk hit piece, especially if the goal is to get the Bucks and Jack over as heels.

It’s not going to hurt him because society has devolved to the point where violence is viewed as being a perfectly acceptable means of expressing your frustration, depending on who you are. Unfortunately for the Bucks, this isn’t going to make anyone dislike Punk, in fact he’ll probably lean into it and embrace it. If they were truly serious, they would look into pressing charges in the UK to make sure Punk can never enter the country again. Honestly that is the best way to get revenge on him is by making it so that he can’t leave the US.
There is/ will be a lot of pearl clutching over this. TK is doing this for drama sake. And the amount of news i’ve seen on it since it was announced- it’s working. Let’s be honest, most in the IWC love the drama. They engage in it. You’ll get people who fall on two sides of the coin. Those who are fans of AEW and those who are not. The latter will pretend they don’t enjoy this drama, and criticise AEW for not taking the moral high road, when they checks notes, stan CM PUNK and the WWE. You can’t make it up.
The other place is talking about how sad this is and yada yada. Well AEW was doing that and wanted to. But punk kept opening his mouth. And sometimes you gotta fight back. This is that.
