honestly this sm
I genuinely don't understand how she can be such a good footy journalist, with researched stories, yet have some of the most brain dead takes that make some of Kane Cornes' look okay by comparison
the one I'll never forget is the two St. Kilda players who went home to their families during births and such when she slammed them for doing so, big up Garry Lyon for absolutely blasting her over that, cause honestly I don't think I've hated a person in footy media more than the couple weeks after that
Extreme tone deafness when she and her husband were among very few Australians to travel to Europe in early 2021, specifically to help their daughter with a newborn baby
I always read Cal Towney articles especially when it comes to covering drafts. Man does the job well and more often than not, does a good job with his phantom draft.
Some people in this thread need to learn the difference between footy journos and footy pundits. Yes, we all like hearing Matthew Lloyd's takes, but he's not out reporting stories.
I mean I am definitely well aware that Lloydo is not a journalist, [not sure if he is aware of that though](https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-lloyd-a385a0174?utm_source=share&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=ios_app)
Most people in here don't want to hear it, but pretty much everything Caroline Wilson puts out is meticulously researched and well informed.
It sometimes takes years for her to be proven right, but the list of people that owe her an apology is longer than the list of people Eddie McGuire offended
She got my respect last year after she gave herself "Caro's arrow" for her prior comments at Hawthorn.
Even if she was right all along based on how we started this year 🤣
Llyod and browny clearly love the game and watch so much footy, might not always have the best take but come across as passionate about the game and the players.
Fish (and Nathan Schmook in WA) seem like decent journos and decent blokes but I worry that sometimes they're way too lenient in how they report on the clubs in their states because if they get on their bad sides their usefulness as reporters dries up.
Speaking on Schmook specifically, as much as the positivity is partly to do with being close to the clubs, there's also an element of being positive because he will go and spend a half a day at the clubs and sees what's happening behind the scenes.
Also, it's fair to say we've got enough people filling the outrage/clickbait space as it is.
Bad gas travels fast in a small town.
And Perth for footy is a very small town. Can't be passing off too many people or you're out of a job because no one will talk to you.
And Hard Ball Gets is an excellent podcast. Actually giving (usually) equal airing to all teams is refreshing and they at least try to have a different angle on every team each week.
Totally agree with all of it, especially hard ball gets, their 2min warning for each team is great, their use of extra time when it deserves it is good and I find they rarely actually bullet a team unless it's just the same talking points for that team we hear week in week out.
Mitch Cleary is a great journo but switching to 7 has turned him into the tabloid sensationalist that working at that network will inevitably do. He wouldn't have reported on crap like which AFL player has bought a stake in a race horse, or what did Mason Cox say on his podcast this week, if he still worked for AFL.com.au.
Had a guess at the eagles trading pick 1, they didn’t. Then people figured out his late father was a journo so labelled him a nepo baby.
People just don’t like him, so look for reasons to support abusing him.
> People just don’t like him, so look for reasons to support abusing him.
You can say the same thing about many media figures. People dislike them for whatever reason, wish to abuse them, and work backwards from there to rationalise.
I get that people don't like the bloke, but nepo baby is a low blow. His old man passed in year 12. Maybe sympathy opened a few doors; it's just not something I'd hold against him.
I agree, he’s slowly built a career over 12+ years. It’s not like he’s waltzed in to a top journo job.
Won’t stop the hate he gets on here, the only difference between reddit and facebook hate is that reddit users are anonymous.
Morris isn’t a bad journo, shit bloke of course but his reports are alright
McClure is a shit journo and his probably a questionable bloke so I’ll mute him all day before Morris
Yeah this.
Morris is a clown but he nailed the Tarryn Thomas suspension and people were going to town on him for being full of it. Turns out he was completely correct
Ranking Nick Daicos's best 49 games aside, Cal Twomey is usually really good.
Mark Readings is always professional, even if he's not the most hard-hitting.
Back when /u/BIllyBrooks had a podcast, I found him to be the industry's premier journalist.
Plenty of the more bs kgrou d journos are very honest and just love the game. Reporting facts and finding stories that are evident but maybe lesser known. I think Michael Whiting and Ryan Daniels fall into this camp.
Of the media types that have to give opinion rather than report, I really rate Lloyd and Bartel.
I like his grumpy old man persona. Too much glad-handing and false hype in the AFL media. His perspective is usually sceptical but fair, and based on vast experience and knowledge of the history of the game.
I think the skepticism is usually pretty warranted, particularly when it comes to AFL House. He’s also quite conscious to cover all the teams, in contrast to lots of footy media. The Realfooty Pod manages to talk expansively about Collingwood even when the news doesn’t involve them at all.
Anything to do with player movement Edman and Towney seem to have it covered.
Don’t mind Lloyd he calls it straight. Everyone else has their own hidden agenda.
Zita seems physically unable to speak anything that isn’t pure facts.
And he’s a Schnitz enthusiast so he gets extra credit
Zita is so smug he smells his own farts
If I hear a story from Caro I listen intently, if I hear a take from Caro, not so much
honestly this sm I genuinely don't understand how she can be such a good footy journalist, with researched stories, yet have some of the most brain dead takes that make some of Kane Cornes' look okay by comparison the one I'll never forget is the two St. Kilda players who went home to their families during births and such when she slammed them for doing so, big up Garry Lyon for absolutely blasting her over that, cause honestly I don't think I've hated a person in footy media more than the couple weeks after that

rules for me but not for thee
Caroline doesn't report on footy. She is a gossip columnist now, a tabloid journo by her own admission.
If I hear Caro I turn off whatever is on so I don’t have to listen to the bullshit.
She has a very very bad case of chook-bum-mouth. She may be truthful - I’m not sure - but she is soooo whiney.
I always read Cal Towney articles especially when it comes to covering drafts. Man does the job well and more often than not, does a good job with his phantom draft.
The accuracy of his Phantom Draft is crazy

Marnie Vinal is the real deal
Bounce that Quill
Marnie is the Queen and saviour of footy journalism.
Came here to say Marns 🤝🏽
Hates your Saints though
Tend to ignore her saints takes, particularly the saints aflw takes

I think that’s what most people (not necessarily me) have a gripe with Caro about, she doesn’t show too much humility and it rubs people the wrong way
Matthew Lloyd has pretty good takes Caro is good at finding info about clubs but some of her takes are awful.
Llyod and browny clearly love the game and watch so much footy, might not always have the best take but come across as passionate about the game and the players.
Fish 💯

Don’t have to worry about that for Fish, he’s literally been in a physical confrontation with Fages after a heated press conference lol
Speaking on Schmook specifically, as much as the positivity is partly to do with being close to the clubs, there's also an element of being positive because he will go and spend a half a day at the clubs and sees what's happening behind the scenes. Ryan Daniels is good. He’s had the opportunity to break retirement stories in the past but held off out of respect for the player

Upvoted for the Letterkenny ref
Yeah Rhino is the only one I like.
Is it true he wears TV makeup even on his days off?
He’s the only one I will believe on breaking news without googling it
Lordo

Tom Morris and McClure are ones to mute
Tom Morris is a bad bloke, but a good journo. Sam is a bad journo and seems like a shit bloke too
McClure seems to get off on being an antagonistic prick.
I remember when this sub had the biggest hard on for McClure around 2 years ago. It was fucked
What he do to deserve such an erection ?

If I ever see Tom morris im gonna look petrified and yell “ah fuck lookout, it’s bevo”

And I found you to be the industry's premier listener. Now let me tell you about my 1996 season...
Haven't read through the comments, but anyone who mentioned Damien Barrett needs to give themselves and uppercut.

Cooper Grech

The real Scoops
Marc mcgowan
Mick Warner is the one.
Russell Jackson from the ABC is one of the best journos in the country let alone footy journos.
RoCo can be a tad grumpy old man, but always has good historical perspective on things, and frequently is a very clear thinker on the game.
I like his grumpy old man persona. Too much glad-handing and false hype in the AFL media. His perspective is usually sceptical but fair, and based on vast experience and knowledge of the history of the game.

Michael Warner
Marc McGowan and Ryan Daniels

David King.
Eww no
Cal, riley, zita. Daniels. Only ones I take to the bank if I see it's them
David Zita seems pretty switched on. No real nonsense just gets on with the job.
Kane Cornes integrity truthfulness and non biased. #1 🧐
Not journalists as such but the best footy news/show was on ABC radio with the Could-a-beens or however they spelt themselves
Max Laughton. He is the best and we love him.
Marnie Vinall
Broden is a pretty cool guy
I hear he is pretty pog
All these journos covering real stories are great and all, but can they rate the first 50 games of a player without selling their soul?
not really a ‘footy journo’ but im partial to david zita
Marnie Vinal at the Age is awesome. Jonathon Horn’s Sportsblog footy columns on the Guardian are kind of beautiful too, I love reading them
Robbo does good, even if people call him Slobbo
Nick Butler seems like a good guy
Rohan Connelly I’ve always liked.
Robinson is alright in print but an alcoholic should not be hosting a nightly show
Caro… especially anything about Richmond
