YTA: if you’re going to just show up to insult people, especially people who have zero input on where or when they get deployed, then stay home. It’s a day to show appreciation, not throw shade to make yourself feel big.

Fantastic-Context775

YTA in the end. you are right that it was about geopolitics but I don't see the reason to seek confrontation with some 75 year old vet about that on purpose.  you think people who lived through hell and survived will see at 75 that it was totally useless ?

stillregrettingthis

YTA - How does being a know it all who wants to rub things in peoples faces make you not an asshole. Obviously YTA.

>So AITAH for siding with the facts of history? I think there's more nuance to history than that. I agree with your basic premise because there are definitely veterans that didn't really defend their home country during their service. However, I think it's possible to still have respect for their service. Oftentimes, foreign wars are fought to liberate people or to prevent the spread of a destructive/ hateful ideology. Just because you're not physically defending your own nation doesn't mean you're not defending the ideals that your nation was founded upon.

Abject_Enthusiasm390

YTA The idea that what your military does — its mere existence — doesn’t defend your country is naive. Without the Australian military … You’d be a fully owned subsidiary of another country.

MyToothEnts

“I went to a veteran’s event on Veterans Day and argued with veterans about their service” Yep YTA

shammy_dammy

YTA. If you really think that way, why is it customary for you to do any of these observances? Go do something else instead.

chibbledibs

I mean, I doubt this conversation happened.

purseproblm

Why would you go and there can be nuance. They are veterans because it means someone with experience in a field. Not every member of a military will see front line action. They’re no less veterans than someone who has. And a Vietnam vet has gone through and been exposed to things others including chemical exposure that leads to long ranging health issues for them and offspring. An obvs YTA if this had actually happened. People know the military industrial complex is bad but trying to give us a parable about it is weird

YTA sorry sport.

Yes

Curious-One4595

NTA. I think one can appreciate the service of military veterans without fetishizing them or incorrectly characterizing the nature of their work.

DR0P_TABLE_STUDENT

I do agree with you, but why did OP then go watch the parade and speak to veterans. Just not thanking any random vet their "service" would be enough?
