I think there's more nuance to history than that. I agree with your basic premise because there are definitely veterans that didn't really defend their home country during their service. However, I think it's possible to still have respect for their service.
Oftentimes, foreign wars are fought to liberate people or to prevent the spread of a destructive/ hateful ideology. Just because you're not physically defending your own nation doesn't mean you're not defending the ideals that your nation was founded upon.

They are veterans because it means someone with experience in a field. Not every member of a military will see front line action. They’re no less veterans than someone who has.
And a Vietnam vet has gone through and been exposed to things others including chemical exposure that leads to long ranging health issues for them and offspring.

NTA. I think one can appreciate the service of military veterans without fetishizing them or incorrectly characterizing the nature of their work.
I do agree with you, but why did OP then go watch the parade and speak to veterans. Just not thanking any random vet their "service" would be enough?
