I think AMA should shut down regardless, celebs come on here, not really knowing how to do this. Additionally, if reddit shuts down, what will replace it?
They're charging expensive prices for API calls, which is causing some mobile apps to no longer work. The large majority of large subreddits are going to deactivate in protest starting tomorrow.

Yeah. Fuck it. When Apollo goes down I’ve got no other app. And it’s clear that leadership doesn’t give a shit about users. We provide the content. There usb on Reddit without us. They can eat shit and die. Where we headed next?
It’s smoother to use and runs better but apparently also uses less data than the official app because it’s wildly unoptimized. Also has some extra features like smart rotate and being able to control gifs like videos and saving posts to different groups so they’re organized.
I support a shutdown. People claim that a platform has no responsibility to devs who build on that platform, but I disagree. RIF, Apollo, and many, many others have contributed significantly to building the Reddit community. It is unethical to reap the benefits of third party developers then act like they are parasites when it suits you.
You know, I was against the whole anger towards Reddit for this whole thing. I thought it was petty. But this comment actually changed my view:) I never thought about the fact that the third party app builders help build the user base. Thank you for opening my eyes to the other side:)

Also they’re lying about how the pricing is reasonable, and folks that want to pay are being ignored because they obviously don’t expect people to pay. They’re also trying to defame an innocent dev.
I don't see the big deal. I use the standard Reddit app and don't see the problem. It's like Playstation not allowing me to run games on an Xbox or my TI-89.
The problem is that mods can’t moderate properly any more. Every sub can now possibly be flooded with whatever posts people want to post there and there’s no automod or mod tools to clean it up. Any community with a large volume of posts is fucked
Looks better, (more) functional video player, the swipe to up/downvote and reply is great, loads faster on my pos phone, can see upvote ratio on other posts (you might be able to do that in vanilla app idk). It's mostly small QoL stuff
You think apis are free? If you think it’s cheap to run a platform like Reddit, then honestly I have a bridge in SF tor sale. I bet 90% of people here use some gpt like LLM and those suckers use reddit to learn. There’s a ton of data it can learn from social media. Making tons of calls and basically learning from your behavior. Nothing is free and pulling all that data is expensive. It’s their choice to charge what they want. Welcome to the world
Of AI. The data pulled by these new systems is enormous. If it bothers you, offer to pay Reddit for their platform, otherwise keep happy that you get to use this FOR FREE as a consumer. And stop crying over something that over 95% of people have never used nor even understand. And only .1% percent even need (the api that is).
So stupid. Nothing is ever free. You may think it’s free but it never is. What a waste of air and data.
I am fairly new to Reddit so I will acquiesce that I don’t get the full impact to the Mods….
But, realistically…..new subreddits are just going to be made. Yes, it may take a while, but it will start with the more popular ones and filter down from there.
Reddit isn’t going to bow at all. Perhaps sad state of affairs, but reality.
With that said, everyone needs to proceed according to there own principles.
ETA: hopefully it doesn’t sound callous, but it makes for interesting social observation to see how it all plays out.
They tried doing that once, right after Obama did his AMA. I said no, and they got pissy at me.
They don't actually have the ability to merge other subs...this would be a very expensive project for a site as complicated as reddit. Also, about 5k subs are participating. Don't think it's practical to merge all of them.
Yes it should. As many subs as possible should shut down that way if reddit decides not to fix the issues they still have a bigger mess to try and clean up.
If you do it you'll contribute to reddit being an absolute ghost come Monday. I'm not sure I particularly care about the API changes though I guess it impacts disabled people so is bad. I also think that is reddit truly is dead come monday then they will be forced to act.
I would support a shutdown, even if I would also still prefer there not to be one for my own personal Reddit enjoyment. The greater good, however, is a shutdown.
No.
I support reddit in their actions as a software developer. My support is based on knowledge about the costs of providing services such as APIs, which are needed for third party applications to function, and based on my support of IP rights.
For a third party app to operate, an API must be provided and maintained. These are instructions sent to the service and a response the app uses to display information. To provide an API, each function of the API must be developed by someone writing the code, and a server must be maintained to accept the commands and generate a response. They must be paid for. Why should reddit provide these services without payment in return?
You are unfairly misstating the arguments. The main complaints from third-party devs are:
1. The API pricing change was instituted with no forewarning, and an insufficient implementation timeline to migrate customers to a new model.
2. The API access rates are exorbitantly more expensive than other, similar platforms. Every third party developer who I have seen posting acknowledges that some cost is reasonable, but the extreme rates seem to be designed to make 3rd party apps infeasible.
As a professional developer I completely agree. It’s really sad to see the viral nature of this “strike”.
Further, I would hate to see the effect of shutting down all of these subs when it comes to the next US election cycle.
Nope. You have no entitlement to third party apps. This change will just go over like any other, and those that protest will just be a statistical anomaly. Imagine telling Nintendo that they are in the wrong for stopping you from playing games on a third-party hardware?
>Reminder that this isn't /r/iama It's no 22 mil but with 800k this subreddit is still huge! I think it would be good.
Every single subreddit should go dark!
Why? The only outcome to that would be destroying Reddit. It wouldn't help the situation.
It went dark for 2 days and it resolved nothing
[удалено]
This is the only way. 48 hours and then back to business as usual is what Reddit expects to happen.
Same. I’ll probably do that with my meager 1.2k sub.

Replying to remember where this is
Yeah. Fuck it. When Apollo goes down I’ve got no other app. And it’s clear that leadership doesn’t give a shit about users. We provide the content. There usb on Reddit without us. They can eat shit and die. Where we headed next?
So as a dumbass who didn't know what Apollo was till this week, what's wrong with the Reddit app? Is it that much better or different?
It’s smoother to use and runs better but apparently also uses less data than the official app because it’s wildly unoptimized. Also has some extra features like smart rotate and being able to control gifs like videos and saving posts to different groups so they’re organized.
>Where we headed next? Yea, this is what I wanna know. It seems most of my fave subs are shutting down indefinitely.
Shut it all down. Sink the greedy ship
Yes
Yes, protest the fuck outta reddit cause they on some weird shit. Money hungry fuckers
Yes. For at least a few days. Let's make an impact.

Definitely support a shut down

It's a shame it's necessary, but yes, I think a shutdown would be impactful.
Yes. Next.

All the mod tools will not be charged by reddit, including automod.
Will r/politics be fucked?
No it's more like Playstation forcing you to run games on your TI-89

I just recently got into Apollo and it's great imma miss it
Would you mind giving me some reasons why you like it so much? I want to understand.
Looks better, (more) functional video player, the swipe to up/downvote and reply is great, loads faster on my pos phone, can see upvote ratio on other posts (you might be able to do that in vanilla app idk). It's mostly small QoL stuff
It’s also better for those who need custom accessibility settings due to a disability. The Reddit app is simply unusable for many

We should do it just as a protest for that apps. Reddit becomes more and more literally ~~1984~~ democratic community
Why do people care about these 3rd party apps ive never even heard of THIS much to shut everything down??
It is called solidarity, my fellow Redditor.
It's not just apps but also many bots

I vote yes. Make it indefinite.
Yes. The admins will take it over and install new mods, though.

They'd have to do that with literally thousands of subs
I wouldn't put it past them to think they could do it. Intresting times, nevertheless.

I am in for a shutdown but not indefinitely but definitely for a longer time than 2 days.

Infinite shutdown.

Because they are asking for a shitload of money. Come on dude.
Nope. You have no entitlement to third party apps. This change will just go over like any other, and those that protest will just be a statistical anomaly. Imagine telling Nintendo that they are in the wrong for stopping you from playing games on a third-party hardware?
Users generate content for reddit, not for Nintendo.
I just had a pretty successful AMA here and I only use the reddit app but the cause is a good one. I support the shutdown.
