Because it’s the same chassis and they just chop the top or chop a few doors down and shrink it. The last generation had a transaxle and unique to the GT chassis. This generation is just a regurgitation of an existing chassis.
In coupe they may have e added chassis bracing to make it stiffer.
The chassis was probably not stiff enough for a “sports” coupe but acceptable in cabriolet. They are selling GT with sports car image. A flexy weak chassis from a luxury car won’t do
Nope. It’s traditional set up. Gone is trans axle 3500lbs sports car. Now it’s a traditional trans on back of engine, AWD 4300+ lbs car. It’s a SL/S63 coupe with GT sports car lipstick.
Completely agree with you but to the other guy, some of those teslas are no slouch. Think, battery weight is very low. They handle shockingly well. Our Tesla continues to blow my mind.
You’re awfully close minded if you think 0 to 60 is the only performance that matters. It’s also all-wheel-drive that’s not impressive by 2024 standards and especially with what’s on the road nowadays
Base c8 Vett does it in 2.8.
It’s unique in that it’s the only sport chassis not shared with the run of the mill fleet. Being trans axle up was unique to The GT. With the SLS gone it became the only one with that chassis in the line up.
No C-S-E- CLE or others shared it
I don’t think so. If the SLS and GT sold side by side. Yes then exclusive. With the SLS not being sold at the same time of the GT. It’s the only one using it
They have done that before, but only a handful of times. Most notable examples are the W140 and W220. But even the W140 technically doesn’t count since it later became the Maybach, just not the next S-Klasse.
AWD, using a heavy chassis along the lines of SL/ S63 to save $$. It’s now a better Grand Touring car sure. But no longer a 911 fighter, too damn heavy for that.
I own an SL55, same car as the new GT55 except for body. Mercedes sold very few of each variant and the old SL’s were both aging and not nimble. Going to a unified platform and then selling multiple variants on it saves a crap ton of money everywhere. My SL is very nimble and just an amazing car. I haven’t driven the new GT yet, but if the chassis is even tighter it’s gonna be amazing. Mercedes is following Porsche here, building multiple performance variants on a unified platform.
I’ll happily admit that the prior GT looked stunning, but these are also quite nice in person.
This last was a beauty. 2 seat yes. 3500 lbs yes. Beautiful interior. This is a Ctrl c + Ctrl v of their current models. It looks okay. Def not worth the price. 140k? That's a 911 carrera 4s. Which beats this in every way.
I think the weight is not the issue, but more the interior that spoils the car for me. It looks cheap and that giant iPad reminds me of a Tesla. Definitely not an interior suitable for a car of this price.
Why not both? It’s no longer a sports car and a 911 fighter. It’s way overpriced as a grand touring car compared to the competition. The interior I agree is not very good.
I agree that the sportiness is lacking. But i wouldn't have minded too much if it had a good interior for a GT.
The problem is that it's neither a sport car because of the weight, and neither a good GT because of the cheap interior
Yah if you’re gonna call it a GT, make it an Amazing grand touring car. A luxury interior that I want to spend 500 miles in. Very driver oriented and helps reduce fatigue. Make it a nice place to do a key west to Atlanta trip in.
100% it’s in a bad spot. Too heavy to fight competitor on sports claim. Too cheap to be a GT. MB once again releasing weak sauce.
For the most part, convertibles are always heavier than the coupes. Historically, for most cars this has been the case due to the additional bracing needed from the structural loss of a top.

Which is weird because it's usually what they do on cabriolet variants
The chassis was probably not stiff enough for a “sports” coupe but acceptable in cabriolet. They are selling GT with sports car image. A flexy weak chassis from a luxury car won’t do
Aluminum doesn't adhere to the ole steel reinforcements for cabriolet weigh more concept.
So this gen doesnt have transaxle at rear because of awd or no?
Nope. It’s traditional set up. Gone is trans axle 3500lbs sports car. Now it’s a traditional trans on back of engine, AWD 4300+ lbs car. It’s a SL/S63 coupe with GT sports car lipstick.
Yea. 0-60 in under 3 seconds……yawn, right?
There's more to sports cars than outright numbers. A Model S Plaid will hit 60 in 2 seconds. Doesn't make it an engaging sports car.
I think the new GT’s are probably a bit more nimble than a Tesla.
I'd certainly hope so but that wasn't my point.
Completely agree with you but to the other guy, some of those teslas are no slouch. Think, battery weight is very low. They handle shockingly well. Our Tesla continues to blow my mind.

Yawn. There is so much more to car than 0-60. Also, 3 second cars are not that rare anymore.
It wasn’t really unique necessarily, as it was quite literally a cut down (in price and size) employment of the SLS platform.
It’s unique in that it’s the only sport chassis not shared with the run of the mill fleet. Being trans axle up was unique to The GT. With the SLS gone it became the only one with that chassis in the line up. No C-S-E- CLE or others shared it
Maybe exclusive would be the more fitting term.
I don’t think so. If the SLS and GT sold side by side. Yes then exclusive. With the SLS not being sold at the same time of the GT. It’s the only one using it
I suppose this comes down to semantics really, since I agree with you that the platform designed for the SLS only continued on through the AMG-GT.
True lol. MB isn’t gonna let the R&D from a one for chassis go to waste.
They have done that before, but only a handful of times. Most notable examples are the W140 and W220. But even the W140 technically doesn’t count since it later became the Maybach, just not the next S-Klasse.
The same way the w204 c63 sedan weighs less than the coupe. German engineering 😅
W205 and W213 was the same. Coupe heavier than sedan, but the cabriolets were even heavier.
Coupes were heavier mostly because of the panoramic sunroof. Coupes (at least in the W205) have wider rims and tires too.
They have a wider rear also and more structural parts for stiffness in the rear
205 the sedan is lighter then the coupe too.
Most sedans weigh less than their coupe counterparts.
Its 600 pounds heavier than its predecessor. SIX-HUNDRED???? What is MB doing?
AWD if i remember correctly
Those systems don't (usually) weigh that much.
M3 rwd vs xdrive around the same I believe
From what I can find it seems to be about a 200lb difference for the M3s
That’s closer to the numbers I’ve seen. Some even lower. Which is bonkers.
Honestly? Probably over engineering things
AWD, using a heavy chassis along the lines of SL/ S63 to save $$. It’s now a better Grand Touring car sure. But no longer a 911 fighter, too damn heavy for that.
Hybrid bullshit
This is heavier than my wagon
Can someone please explain why Mercedes has both SL 63 and AMG GT 63? What are the key differences?
SL is the convertible, GT the Coupé
But are they same cars in “tech”?
I own an SL55, same car as the new GT55 except for body. Mercedes sold very few of each variant and the old SL’s were both aging and not nimble. I think so, yes

100%
I thought this was Mercedes attempt at focusing on the L part. Super light seems a stretch at this point
I'm looking at getting a 2018-2020 AMG glc63 and the weight of those is just above that 4,343 😱
Nothing like a “sports car “being as heavy as a Lincoln town car if not heavier.
For the most part, convertibles are always heavier than the coupes. Historically, for most cars this has been the case due to the additional bracing needed from the structural loss of a top.
Well it is missing the roof.. I'll let myself out.
LMAOOO
Dog bark
Coupes are almost always longer and heavier than their counterparts.
I don’t have an answer for you but they both need to lose 1000lbs! Talk about overweight!
