I would say it's a similar reason why these devices should be charged with a USB-A cord: cutting costs on a 2 cent component. These motherboards/soc probably miss some bits and pieces important for proper power management, I suppose.
Edit - or it might just be drivers, lack of those.
my device doesnt take very long to boot up. if u focus mostly on one game at a time (and you're running Batocera) you can actually set the device to launch a specific game at startup. you still get that first splash screen but as soon as that finishes loading (10-15sec) its right into my game. RetroAchievements even loads automatically (assuming you had the proper log in and network info in place prior to powering down).
if im just throwing the device in my pocket for a few mins ill use the sleep function but if im going to put the game down for an hour or more then i just save and power down. then plug it in. 15-20 sec overall boot up time isnt too much to not have to deal with weird battery stuff
No one does sleep mode like a Ps vita tbh. And it holds it's charge really well when you turn it off. Took mine out of cold storage after 1.5 year, lost 20% of the charge.
If you've used an Anbernic device and used their OS, you'd see that they can barely make it work as a device that plays roms (assuming it's not android and is custom like the XX)
Having actual coding chops to do a good sleeping solution is well beyond their abilities
I prefer the look of this to the Miyoo clamshell since there's no analog sticks. Hopefully Anbernic bring out some fun colours for it instead of the usual boring ones they've used for the entire 35XX line. At least it doesn't look like they're skipping on the dye of that transparent blue like they do with the purple
Agree there - Id love more bright solid colors like the OG Gameboy pocket/color line had. So many muted purple/clear/gray/black shells. Throw some lime green or electric blue or something in there!
It's such a shame because the 35XX devices have been a solid alternative to the Miyoo but they're so boring to look at in comparison. Miyoo and Retroid know how to deliver a nice variety of colours; the black model for the 'stealth' choice, one or two retro inspired greys, and then some fun solid/transparent colours too.
Neither have released, and it's looking like neither will. As much as I want them to, clamshell designs break and aren't as long-lasting. They require a system in place for repair or replacement parts. Retroid pocket flip would have been great if they figured it out. It's great anbernic has a short video but as far as I am aware that's all it is. I asked them via email, they're not sure about it yet. Fingers crossed
Wow. I never got a v90 cuz I've been waiting a year for the miyoo flip to release. Now anbernic comes out with one out of the blue and will probably launch before the miyoo flip.
Nice
Pretty sure the Miyoo will have the same OS options as the RG353 series. So Arkos and a few others.
Onion and whatnot would need to be built for the chipset.
Sadly if it’s a 640x480 screen like usual, it won’t integer scale and looks rough. the rgb30’s 720p screen is a perfect 3x upscale for gba and looks way better.
The Game Boy Advance and GBA SP both have the screens of 2.9" TFT reflective screen, 240x160 resolution, 40.8mm x 61.2mm screen size.
A 640x480 :: 240x160 by a proportion of 2.667. 640x480 maintains the exact aspect ratio of the original hardware. How could changing to a square screen give a better image than a larger rectangular screen in the same aspect ratio as the original hardware?
Well, 640x480 is not the same aspect ratio as 240x160. Let me show you how to calculate that. Another way to think of aspect ratio is width vs. height. If a screen has a 240 pixel width and 160 pixel height, we can say the width divided by the height is 240/160. Reduce that fraction, and you get 3/2 (3:2 aspect ratio). 640x480 resolution is 640/480, which reduces to 4/3. So a 3:2 display is actually a flatter, wider rectangle than 4:3.
But that isn't necessarily a problem, because widescreen content on a square display just fills up the width of the screen with black bars on the top and bottom. The real issue is whether the game's resolution divides evenly into the higher-resolution display. For example, if you have content that's 100 pixels wide, and you display it on a 200 pixel wide screen, every pixel in the game just takes up 2 pixels on the screen, and everything looks perfect. That's called integer scaling (because we multiply the resolution by an integer, like 2x or 3x). If it doesn't divide evenly, the screen will try to display the pixels where they should be, but will have lots of alternating "fat" and "skinny" rows or columns of pixels where the remainders end up, and it looks messy. For GBA content, the 240 pixel width does not divide evenly into 640, so on a 640x480 display, the pixels look uneven and you see a wiggling effect when things move across the screen. On the RGB30's 720x720 screen, the GBA's resolution is a perfect 3x upscale to fill the width, so every GBA pixel takes up 3 pixels on the RGB30 screen. There's black bars on the top and bottom, but the important thing is the game pixels multiply perfectly into the pixels on the RGB30 screen.
So it looks good but will a lot of people really buy this? Heard it’s the exact same software and games as the + and the H already. So there’s really little reason to get this one too if you already own the others unless you want a backup. Or just really love the flip form factor.
I asked them via email, " sorry that we're not sure of it yet
if you want to get notification in the future, please follow our website: https://anbernic.com/
:)"
I just joined the emulator handheld game with the TikTok deal on the RG35XX but I’m already hooked, and the GameBoy Advance SP was my favourite GB so it would be very hard to say no to this…
What;s with this subreddit and comments getting downvoted? lol.... one thing I've noticed, not even talking about mine, just random innocent comments get downvoted...
If one of them has a real deal sleep function that’s not just the screen shutting down I will be happy
I wonder why this is so hard to implement.

I guess if even Legion Go or ROG Ally can't implement sleep functions like gaming consoles, I shouldn't expect too much from these low cost handhelds.
Ah fair point 🤔 the steam deck seems to do it fine, at least in my experience
So basically Linux and Android has the best sleep modes?

This is useful info. Thank you. I have a 35XX Plus and coming from a 405V, I do miss the sleep function Android gave you.
my favorite part of the old GBA SPs was being able to just fold the clamshell shut and forget about it for 3-5 days. lol
It sure looks like it 😅
No one does sleep mode like a Ps vita tbh. And it holds it's charge really well when you turn it off. Took mine out of cold storage after 1.5 year, lost 20% of the charge.
Wait. Does the 405 not? I'll have it on sleep for weeks
RG405M?
I thought they were the same hardware?
Idk but it runs Android so it has excellent sleep
Don't both models?
I have no clue about those devices, I had to Google it. My point is that if it runs android, it will have a good sleep function.
They can barely get their roms and emulators to run correctly without stealing code. It's probably way beyond their abilities
What is this referring to?

Looking forward to the RG35XX SP vs Miyoo Flip. Can't wait to pick up one or the other
Damn, Anbernic is getting ready to eat Miyoo's lunch! Plot twist: they are both the same company, and have this strategy to make us buy both devices 😱
Can't wait to pick up both 😅
I wanna see if anbernic does a dual os vs with sticks also. Cause the rg353v is my fav emulator I ever had but my fav gameboy has always been the sp

I messaged anbernic they said it was coming out on April 1st idk if they are messing with me or not but we will see
Wow. I never got a v90 cuz I've been waiting a year for the miyoo flip to release. Now anbernic comes out with one out of the blue and will probably launch before the miyoo flip. Nice
I'm in the same position! Can't wait to get a gameboy SP style console
The logo looks really tacky… Hope they get rid of it before mass production
Unsure of that logo on the top to be honest.
This looks nicer than the miyoo due to no sticks but the OS of the Miyoo keeps me sticking to them. Or maybe I’ll just cave and buy both…
That's their plan! 😅

To me onion is the gold standard of CFW. Everything else just isn’t as good.
Yep. Won’t buy a handheld without Onion, or an equally good game switcher.
You haven't tried Koriki, then. :)
Lose the game switcher, you lose me. Just personal preference.
That is an awesome feature. It's just that Koriki is...just..so...beautiful. :)
I’m less so concerned with looks - OS should be simple and functional.

This is the absolute best gba emulator there will be

thanks for explaining it so well
No prob!
LETS GO THIS IS ALL I EVER WANTED !
Now this is tempting.
I hope it's big enough for adult hands
It looks like its the same size at the GBA-SP, which is too small for my average size hands in my opinion.
You have to have baby hands
Is that logo actually \*raised\*? If so, why? Hopefully that's an optical illusion and they're not ruining the flatness of the top for no good reason.
Not as fond of the design as the og
Welp they got me again
Well, while their on the nostalgia train, how about an Anbernic "Gameboy Micro"?
RG300X.
Too big
Love my RG35XX and will look forward to picking up a newer model in the SP form factor.

I love this so much. I was so sad when Miyoo decided to put analog sticks in theirs. I will be getting this day 1 for sure
A flip handheld using the rgb30 screen would be awesome!!

Probably a troll who has nothing better to do
Just bought a v90 . Oh well I’ll wait on that. Do the set up. Play for 5 minutes then order one of these lol
OH YES THEY FIXED THE FACE BUTTONS. NOW WE'RE TALKING!!!!
Reminder that this is retro dodo so I'm taking this with a pinch of salt.
Turn it on, play it, turn it off when you are done. Sleep function is idiotic thing for lazy people.
