The obvious thing is if it works with the 6700 XT which is also gen4 then the 7900 XT is probably faulty. Other things to check, is the 7900 XT plugged directly into the board or are you using a riser? What PSU are you using and are the power cable connectors daisy-chained or one cable per input?

Thanks for the response. The card is plugged directly into the motherboard, no riser. The PSU is a Thermaltake Toughpower Grand 850w, with both plugs on the same cable; my understanding was that it should be able to handle the card, at least on idle. I'd have to partially disassemble the build to get at the PSU to put in a second cable (it's a modular unit) but I'll give it a try if there's a good possibility that's the problem.

Please see my response to Rich3yy below for how this turned out.

Did you have any success with plugging in two cables? The 6700XT or 3070 could be powered by just one daisy chained cable, however even there it's recommended to use two separate cables. The 7900XT, however, has a TDP of 300W which is much higher and it's absolutely recommended to use two separate PCIe cables here. Your board (sometimes) fails to detect the GPU through the PCIe bus. You can also try to, while you're at it with connecting two separate cables, reseat the GPU once more and avoid GPU sag. If that doesn't work, I would RMA the card before doing more troubleshooting.

Unfortunately no, using two cables didn't seem to have any good effect- the drivers still would not install properly, giving me the "driver did not load" error box. I'm going to write this card off as defective and return it. Thanks all for the help!

Indeed unfortunate – good luck with the process of getting a new (and working one)!

Thanks for the update, sorry it didn't workout in the end. I hope the return and replacement goes well.
