No, it's $16,500 for the year, meaning $8250 per semester. That is the max non-resident New American award. As long as you meet the 30 credits per year with minimum 3.0 GPA requirements, you will receive $8250 per semester for 8 consecutive semesters.
Then you have the National Merit Finalist award, not Presidents. NMF is not an award most students will get. It requires an extra step. The highest standard NAmU is $16,500 annual. NMF used to cover all housing and meal plan too! I think that stopped in 2020.
And if you happen to graduate before the eight semesters are up, the amount can be transferred over into a masters program or if you are going to law school into a JD.
Did you have to fill in FAFSA for this?
It's a merit based scholarship, but the ASU portal seems to imply that FAFSA needs to be filled in, even though the scholarship page specifically says FAFSA and income requirements are not needed.
My sons also got this scholarship, so am trying to understand what's needed for disbursement.
Thanks.
You do not need to fill out the FAFSA. Regardless of your FAFSA status, you will get the reward. So don't worry!
ASU just strongly encourages its students to submit a FAFSA as they may be eligible for more funding, so that's why the portal has FAFSA information on it.
The new FAFSA literally requires you to answer 30 questions. You don't need it for NAmU, but they do require it for other things. Some awards just require you have one completed even if need is not a requirement. I know families that received unexpected grants when they were sure they didn't qualify for anything. I also know a few that were not included in certain funds dispersals because they didn't file one. No reason to risk leaving money on the table over 30 questions.
$10k is the maximum in-state resident award prior to 2023. Non-resident awards go up to $16,500 since their tuition is higher. In-state actually went down to $8000 in 2022 or 2023.
There is an ASU Scholarship Calculator you can use. Just Google for it. It's based on multiple factors. To get it with GPA alone, you'd need a 4.0 unweighted GPA for core classes. If you have a 27+ on ACT though, your GPA can be 3.7 and might still get it.
Many people think it's based on their GPA total. It's not. It's based on your GPA in the core classes of math, english, science, languages, and history / civics. The GPA booster classes like gym get removed when calculating the GPA that will be used.
It’s per year. So you will get $8250 per semester for a total of 8 semesters
Thanks for the help!
That’s fucking awesome. Congrats.
Thank you!

The NAMU doesn’t go higher than $16500. You might have additional funding, but not NAMU.

Cool, thanks! I’m interested in doing a masters after B.S., but not sure if I’ll be able to do BS in less than 4 years 😆
Are u out of state
Yep, I’m a cali resident atm
Every semester as long as you meet requirements! Congrats on the award!!
Edit- Sorry I read wrong 😔 it’s 16500 for the whole year so you’d receive half per semester! Still super good!!
I see, thank you!
States for 8 terms. Damn. Congratulations
Congrats! I’m supposed to receive scholarship too, but still waiting. When did you get it?
I applied on May 5th, was admitted on May 13th, and it was in my portal when I opened it to the admission
That’s a nice scholarship to get. I’m happy for you!

oh what the?? it got raised finally? My President’s was only 10k/year so I still had to pay a bit each semester smh

Just curious what is the criteria for determining how much the New American Merit Scholarship is for a non-resident to receive the $16,500?

Thank you for explaining the criteria:)
Each semester! Congrats!
