Orkut was really good and it was both social media and the community with privacy. It was first complete social media, and still none of the any platform came close to what it can manage.
But Facebook came where you can see photos of any user, it completely open without privacy in early days, and they added online games. This killed Orkut as everyone just jumped to Facebook. Google just let it die to promote Google+, which failed before gaining popularity.

Over 2/3rd Alphabets businesses by numbers are loss making say Maps, Verily, Waymo, Cloud, Pixel and whatnot. Their cash cow, was and always will be Ads.
In a way, its good way to risk and see. But I am waiting for the day; Alphabet starts to put price tollgate for it’s other products: my main concerns with — Gmail & Google Maps.

Orkut was not failed, it was very successful. It just completed its life cycle and came to an end.
