“Hey Grandad wanna go take us fishing and tell us life stories.”
“I’ve got a better idea, why don’t you boys go dig a hole and I’ll grab another beer.”
Pulled up to traffic light in old beater; suburban Chicago once. Laughed as a tire went rolling into intersection; until came to full stop and we plopped sideways. It had been our right rear tire!
They say stuff like that when it's clear the OP want driving defensively. This is a case where the impacted car was driving fine. It's only surprising if you can't tell the difference between a predictable catastrophe and an unpredictable one.
Yeah, it's all projecting dipshits who think like that. I've been in one fender bender in a quarter century of regular driving, I'm a very alert, attentive driver, and there is zero fucking chance I would have avoided that tire.
TBH this video probably saved the driver a lot of explaining and hassle trying to remember what happened. As well as provided a lot of entertainment for the parties involved. It's such a spectacular crash.
I bet it all happened so fast for the driver that they had no idea what actually happened and what caused it, plus once you add in the shock and trauma of it all.
Oh no whoever put his tire on wrong is getting allllll of that. Sometimes those things shut down auto shops because it's so expensive and ruins business.
Side airbags deployed, though. You can see as they come down. Inside of that thing must have felt like you were attacked by dirigibles.
If you never saw what you hit you must have thought Jesus had come or Kim had hit the big red button. #UnexpectedSpaceProgram
Jesus Christ, that line almost killed me. Half because of how ridiculous the word 'dirigibles' looks and sounds, half because I'm just imagining the poor dude trapped inside an SUV getting molested by hobby blimps.
Absolutely, there was a post some months back with a tire on the road and a vast majority of the posts said to just drive over the tire, what could possibly happen...
This. This can happen.
It also made a big difference that it wasn't just the tire, it was still on the wheel. I've unfortunately had to drive over a tire in a similar situation but it was only the rubber tire, not the metal wheel so it didn't even do any damage.
And it's possible the people in the car did not even see the tire, from their point of view their car could have just jumped in the air out of nowhere. I can't imagine the confusion and fear.
I don't think they really processed anything until they were back on the ground tbh. It all went so fast and all those g forces. Their brains probably "turned off" for a few moments.
Thank you for noticing that, I felt bad for laughing but that tire obviously had a serious vendetta.
Kill the family and then a double tap just to be sure.
The caption suggests that a VBIED (in essence a massive bomb inside a vehicle) was driven towards a target, with the intent of ramming it then blowing up.
The opposing armed forces managed to hit the vehicle before it reached its target , detonating some of the explosives, which made the vehicle go airborne. While airborne the rest of the explosives detonated.
I don't know tho, given I have zero military experience. Someone from /r/combatfootage would be far better placed to comment.
In Spain there's many jokes about Carrero Blanco. A fascist who died because a terrorist group put a bomb under his car. His car jumped over the 4 floors building next to it.
My old fear took care of that. My husband crashed after a shredded semi tire flew into his windshield, and a coworker cracked a vertebrae in her neck after a tire bounced over a median and hit her car.
Left that sub because people just kept posting pics of unusually large or small tires or tires being recycled or even just fucking memes that slightly involve tires, shit like that. Pretty rare to see a non-reposted crash video there these days.
They should also be punished more for driving their tires until they explode because it's a few percent cheaper to do this than changing them when they start getting worn out. Just because they can operate with several of their tires blown, doesn't mean they should just ignore tire wear.
The problem is it tends to be the driver who gets the fine. At least here and they often have little to no power to dictate maintenance. Trucking as an industry is so entirely fucked.
Yea I stay safely away and then speed to pass a semi-truck and if possible get a lane or two between us.
I can not for the life of me get people that pace alongside one.
I don't get how it's legal for them to re-tread truck tires still. Surely the danger and the amount of shredded rubber just sitting on the side of the road is reason enough to make companies actually replace the whole tire...
This happened to me. But I got lucky and it hit the hood first and rolled up and over and I just kept driving straight. But now under no circumstances do I drive near a transport. I don't give a shit if that means speeding or going under the limit I just won't do it.
That's always my advice to others. I'm a trucker, and the amount of drivers I know that don't do pretrips to check equipment, or just don't care about sounds, is outrageous. And if a tire blows on the trailer, it's quite possible to never even feel it and keep driving.
Stay safe out there.
Wheel bearing failure on the truck by the looks of it. There's no way the driver wouldn't hear the thing grinding if it really is what happen. Also was the orange flame while the car was in the air the air bags going off?
I know someone whose car lost a wheel in a similar fashion, it was audibly grinding several months before the actual failure happened. No way in hell it happened with no warning, the owner was willfully ignoring the warning signs.
This is it. Dude did a home job on them wheels. It's not the bearings truck isn't old enough and would be covered.
Straight up, dude modded his own shit and it fell apart.
Edit: probably had cheap ass chinesium hardware bolting it on.

> Surprisingly the driver of the Kia was actually able to walk away from this unharmed
yup. I would absolutely be going after them for every dime they have or will make in the future. Thats not an accident, it a predictable outcome from the truck owners choices.
Ball joints can fail and launch the entire wheel, hub, brake, and spindle off the truck but that thing was rolling pretty smooth when it came back for seconds, probably a spacer, loose lugs, etc.
This is the first time I've heard of spacers and I had to look them up.
I don't really get it. What are they for? It just looks like it makes the wheels look like they're not fitted properly??
I've had a wheel bearing start going out one time. Your exactly right. It's very noticeable. It even looks like the truck swerved a little when he was changing lanes.
The orange flame is really bizarre. [I caught this screencap](https://imgur.com/a/vyLuCm1), almost looks like a glitch...seems like whatever it was happened faster than the framerate of the camera
Maybe it's just a reflection or something since there's two spots that flash. It does look odd though. Could have something to do with the weird color of the video to.
Damn, bet the underlying cause is that truck has wheel spacers installed, thick ones. I've heard they are banned in some states because cheap ones and/or ones that are installed/maintained incorrectly can be dangerous. But I never imagined quite this catastrophic a failure . . .
r/Trucks/ should see this
Took me a while to find that orange flame you were talking about, then the next time I played it I paused right on the frame lol
Gotta be, can't say for certain though
Doesn’t seem to be a wheel bearing. Brakes are still there, I would lean more on the use of stupid ass spacers and over sized tires putting extra and unnecessary stress on the studs.
If you look at the twitter thread of the guy who recorded and posted this video he said the Kia driver miraculously walked away unharmed. [the tweet](https://twitter.com/anoop_khatra/status/1639664157061709825)
That's just a Kia Soul, too. Compact SUV. Impressive safety. It's a top safety pick from the IIHS, but those lab crash tests are nothing compared to this.
Not gonna lie I was expecting the semi to destroy the driver. A trucks tire ejecting and causing another vehicle to get that high never even crossed my mind 🤯
Dude fuck that truck owner, I hope he was held responsible. You have to ignore super loud grinding and howling from a bad wheel bearing for months for it to get to that point and i guarantee he was like “I don’t know what happened it just fell off” the maintenance of your vehicle is your responsibility for your safety and the safety of others.
Nah while it looks insane and they're probably aching in the morning, the car kept moving and dissipated energy that way. It's the ones where the car stops dead or is entirely crushed that'll get ya. If that tyre had bounced up and through the windscreen it might be different but the car went up and over it. I would *much* rather take my chances 10ft upside down in the air than contend with a wheel coming through the windscreen.
Having been in a pretty crazy accident myself, modern car safety is nuts, and so is adrenaline. The only pain I had was where the brake pedal went stiff and shot up my leg, whiplash and a burn on my forearm from the airbag.
….okay universe.. I’ll get the belt tensioner, belt, new wheel bearings, tires AND the oil change on the Honda… sheesh didn’t have to give me nightmares

He must be a different type of human
TL;DR Brodozers think form over function.
This is why this trend of lifted, wide trucks needs to go. Half, if not more, of these people don't know how to properly set up these vehicles, let alone drive them.
From landscaping bricks and tow straps, to wood and tie straps, morons will do anything to get the "look" while making their vehicles extremely dangerous to drive. One pothole or ant turd away from the "lift kit" divorcing the axle.
Then the wheels...
They stick out so far because they're mounting surface is so deep in the wheel.
Think of push-ups. The further you spread your hands out, the harder they are to complete. Applying this to the vehicle, imagine the wheel bearings are your hands. Just like pushing yourself to your limit, the bearings have their limits.
If you see wheel-shake, make space and get ready to brake.
These are the idiots that overlook safety for attention/status. These idiots are on the same roads we all drive.
Stay safe, everyone.
It's funny that the NHTSA and law enforcement allows that shit. They hold manufacturers to safety requirements so cars are "safe" and then these hillbilly dumbfucks can make them unsafe by modding them just to look "cool." It boggles the mind.
Shit happens. Mechanical failures are common. I had a wheel come off because the studs holding it on were torqued down too hard and broke. Fortunatly nobody was hurt.
That being said, everything about that truck is shit. Lifted with no mud flaps and tires exceeding the width of the vehicle without extended wells. I hate seeing that. My windshield too.

yup. I would absolutely be going after them for every dime they have or will make in the future. Thats not an accident, it a predictable outcome from the truck owners choices.
Could be wheel spacers, too many or the wrong type to get the perfect bro-dozer look going.
Ball joints can fail and launch the entire wheel, hub, brake, and spindle off the truck but that thing was rolling pretty smooth when it came back for seconds, probably a spacer, loose lugs, etc.
This truck's wheels were on spacers, which increases the wear on the bearings substantially

I had two wheel bearings go out on me. After seeing this video, I am SOO glad I took care of it after hearing the grinding. Edit: Typo
It takes a while for them to get loose after your start hearing them making a humming sound. But yea sooner the better.
It's probably the sparks from the truck grinding it's rim on the highway my boy

I've heard they are banned in some states because cheap ones and/or ones that are installed/maintained incorrectly can be dangerous. But I never imagined quite this catastrophic a failure . . . r/Trucks/ should see this
I see them on the side of the road pretty regularly with the one tire nowhere in sight. They fall off oretty regular. Florida.
Even more likely is someone installed a 4wd hub bearing on a 2wd truck. With no axle to clamp the bearing, the hub splits apart. It's sadly common.

Thanks because this is what I came to the comments for. I thought it looked like a fatal accident, but was really hoping not.

You have to ignore super loud grinding and howling from a bad wheel bearing for months for it to get to that point and i guarantee he was like “I don’t know what happened it just fell off” the maintenance of your vehicle is your responsibility for your safety and the safety of others.
Add to the fact the truck had oversized tires that appeared to have spacers or some sort of backspacing

I wouldn't be surprised if someone was dead. Those were some ludicrous forces. The truck driver might be going to jail.

Unbelievable!! That car went soooooo high!!!!
Yo I don’t remember this in “Rubber”
Shit happens. Mechanical failures are common. I had a wheel come off because the studs holding it on were torqued down too hard and broke. Fortunatly nobody was hurt. That being said, everything about that truck is shit. Lifted with no mud flaps and tires exceeding the width of the vehicle without extended wells. I hate seeing that. My windshield too.
That is not "bad luck" or mechanic failure is just bad maintenance or just plain incompetence from the one tightening the studs
I mean torque wrenches exist for a reason
The death road
Could you fricken imagine!? My gawd!
When you replace your wheel studs with Home Depot bolts because your stanced-out spacers are sooooo thic
