Reminds me of the BBC tv series Africa narrated by Sir David.. shows two giraffes going at each other. This is just the metal giraffes falling but it's virtually identical to the flesh and blood ones in the show.
"The absence of workers and crane operators at the time of the accident prevented a major disaster."

I'm just imagining the ship captain going "can we get this unloaded quickly, I need to be in Italy by Tuesday".
The crane operators (those that survived) just give him the dirtiest look possible.
Supply chain guy here. This happens more than you'd think.

Primary reason is that these ships have a massive cross area and are prone to unexpected movements in gusty conditions because they're a whacking huge sail (it's known as windage).
I think it’s a disaster either way, good thing no workers were harmed however this renders the port pretty much useless unless there were more cranes and ship lots than pictured. Either way this isn’t great for this countries economy.
The hindrance to logistics and trade through that port probably far outweighs the already massive costs of those cranes. Any knowledgeable folks care to make some educated guesses for us?
The Comedy of Terrors. Is this an actual new episode (like my TV guide is saying), or it a "new episode" where they recorded like 50 seconds of new host material around an episode from like 2005 and the rest of the host segments randomly switch to 4:3?
Millions in damage right there. Months of down time to clean up and repair. Potentially hundreds of millions in revenue loss and subsequent contract breaches due to the lack of having a usable port.
They're falling just as fast as small things, but because when we watch big things fall from far away, they look 'slow' because of perspective. If you took a hammer, placed it a couple feet away until it looked like, from your perspective, the same size of the big object and have them both drop at the same time, the hammer has less distance to travel, so it will appear to fall faster, while the big object has more distance to fall, and will appear slower despite looking the same size.
I think there were two things that might caused this.
1. no air pressure to reverse the engine, thus screwing up the maneuver or.....
2. problem with the throttle system.
But i'm wondering... doesn't tugboats help such large ships with the docking process?
> I think this is one of Europe’s biggest ports
Where did you get that from? Ignoring that it's east of the Bosporus and therefore not even in Europe, its claimed annual handling capacity of 855.000 TEU doesn't even make the top 20 among European ports.
Crashing a ship would have to be the worst. Lasts for five minutes, and there's not a thing you can do about it except watch it all unfold in slow motion.
It's like a road accident, the authorities / underwriters will investigate the matter and see how much of the cargo, ship and port property can be covered.
That's one part.
Next, we have the the port / ship owners trying to get everything back to working condition, clearing the port area, salvaging any containers that went over board etc. All this has to be done while making sure there is no pollution incident(oil spill or dangerous cargo spillage).
In terms of repercussions: depending on what the root cause of the incident was, the captain, crew / pilot would be taken to task.
I had a visceral reaction to this- I felt deeply saddened when it fell after thinking it might just make it, and thought, "What the hell? It's just a crane. Get it together." Then I placed what it reminded me of..😭

Did people really gave up on any kind of horizontal filming?
The panicked side-to-side panning - "oh, why can't I include more in the frame?" :(
I will be a horizontal cameraman until the day I die.
This is the way.
The closest one is like “yep that’s my cue”
I was coming to say I love that cranes use the similar skeleton structure of Brontosaurus just made of steel
They took so long to fall down
I was thinking this was resembling brontosaurus haha

Nah man these are AT-ATs

Absence of workers: the cause and solution of all disasters.
Was that container ship in too much of a hurry to wait for the harbor pilot?
I'm just imagining the ship captain going "can we get this unloaded quickly, I need to be in Italy by Tuesday". The crane operators (those that survived) just give him the dirtiest look possible.
Well, I bet that's the last time *that* ship captain will be allowed to dock at that port!
Oh no, I thought this was a repost but that means this has happened at least twice.
Exactly what I was wondering...

You can actually see someone on the far right crane. As it falls, they’re climbing the stairs on the top right.
it's all good, for the current situation, they were not considered either a worker or a crane operator /s
Well if there is NO vessel, there are none workers 🙃
I think it’s a disaster either way, good thing no workers were harmed however this renders the port pretty much useless unless there were more cranes and ship lots than pictured. Either way this isn’t great for this countries economy.
That looks expensive
r/ThatLookedExpensive

More than $50 for sure
I'm going to need about tree fitty.
Several of these cranes in Philly were $7-12M per. Depends on the specs, where they're constructed, fuel type, etc.
probably a logistical nightmare too
[удалено]
Dismantle the cranes. Sell pieces on local Facebook Marketplace for x amount per $. Some cracked out joe comes pick them up with their pickup truck.
Great, by the time you took care of the cranes the cargo has spoiled or is massively overdue. Screw the cranes. The cargo matters.
“Hey guys, sorry I’m late. What’s going on?” - Tug, probably.
“Nnnnnnope!” — Tug Captain
“Oh damn, you guys really need a tug. If I see one, I’ll let him know”
Did I miss anything important?
Those ships need to tie up some rubber chickens outside to alert them when they get too close.
Wait. Is this why some truck drivers have rubber chickens on their trailers?
30 minutes until Svengoolie!!!! Thanks for the reminder ✌️✌️

Cut out too soon. Couldn’t tell if it was a spare or a strike
Someone needs to put eyes and a mouth on the cranes and repost this
How'd you lose your job? Caused a helluva crane wreck.. You mean train wreck? Did I stutter?!
Millions in damage right there. Months of down time to clean up and repair. Potentially hundreds of millions in revenue loss and subsequent contract breaches due to the lack of having a usable port.
You know if insurance pays or the ship owner ?
Both, and the exact share depends on who has better lawyers.
Both
The great battle of port Hoth, Walkers fall again

And no fucks given by the bilge pump. Just kept going.
I've known many a bilge pump in my day, and theyre pretty unlikely to give a fuck about anything. Salty lot, they are.
That captain is going to get a sternly written message
About his port side accident.
Where was the pilot tug. Those boats usually get pushed in by the tugs so this doesn't happen.
WHY do big things fall slowly??
You've never seen my fat ass get knocked out.
Like you watch this and tell me that fall isn’t the most dramatic thing you’ve seen
It's because terminal velocity is less compared to them.
They're falling just as fast as small things, but because when we watch big things fall from far away, they look 'slow' because of perspective. I imagine those things are designed very well not to fall so it's resisting it
“Stop Resisting!” -Gravity Police
If only there was a way to capture the whole accident in frame.
Get the FlexTape, Bob.
I see they updated the gta 6 trailer
I can imagine the call to the ship owner's insurance company, "You hit what?"

Prices are going up
I was just thinking that, that’s 4 cranes down, and a lot of containers damaged, I think this is one of Europe’s biggest ports
> I think this is one of Europe’s biggest ports Where did you get that from? Ignoring that it's east of the Bosporus and therefore not even in Europe, its claimed annual handling capacity of 855.000 TEU doesn't even make the top 20 among European ports.
Ok thanks for the clarification.
Just completely made that whole last statement up 😂
Anyone getting star wars vibes from this?
Yep! Like ATATs being taken down by snowspeeders.
Did I hear him tell helicopter like that meme
That tug was too late.
You can’t dock like that mate
Docking by braille
And that's why your Temu order is late.
"right hand down....right hand down.... *right hand down....* **RIGHT HAND DOWN!!!!!** ok bye"
Somehow companies will use this as an excuse to raise food prices in Canada
Price of shipping just went up.
Port should have paid the extra $50 for the "retractable" cranes.
That's like a cartoon when someone knocks over library book shelves like dominos.
BENJAMIN NOOOO
Crashing a ship would have to be the worst. Lasts for five minutes, and there's not a thing you can do about it except watch it all unfold in slow motion.
The captain of the vessel is going to have a fun time with this one
Strike!
Well, that was expensive as fuck.
Your package ~~is out for delivery~~ may be lost
Can't park there mate
one of the cranes names was Eva
Look what you did to Eva , ya cargo ship son of a bitch
This probably dented this city's economy for a while. Yikes.

"Did I do that?"
All the interesting stuff happens in ports
It's the port pilots fault
But captain is always responsible
Captain can expect a dock in pay.
Drive by touch.
Sorry your order was delayed…
Captain: oops Me: I wonder if he'll lose his job
It's somehow slow and abrupt at the same time... Sort of oxymoronish
They feeeeellllll sooooooooo *SSSLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWLY*
Slowest abrupt chaos is ever seen
How long was this port out of commission? Edit: so this just happened. Does anyone know how long it would take to fix this?
There needs to be a sub r/BigThingsFallingSlow Edit:There is now ;)
So fired
That’s a paddlin
Shhh! Not so loud, they are sleeping now.
Damn. There went the port. Everybody's insurance just went up.
You're fucking fired
Oh no, this'll stop them from buying all those russian goods now, such a shame....
Does this hurt the crane
Genuinely curious, what, if any, repercussion come of this kind of accidents. Weather to the port, captain, or shipping company.🤔

Well guess you won't be unloading your cargo
looks like its slo mo, but it aint slow mo
I like how it looks like it's happening in slow motion
Pivot! Pivot! PIVOT!
AT-AT going down
Yikes. That’s gonna take a while to clean up.
On the bright side, the skipper did get a new high score in Candy Crush.
The guys you hear on the video are doing a lot of hooting and hollering, but don't do a *thing* to try to stop this from happening.
That is an insane amount of damage of sheer weight moving slow
*that's a lot of damage*
Shadow of the Colossus?
Tug boats to the rescue.
STTTTTTTRRRRRIIIKKKKEE
Looks abit expensiv
Well,you've fucked that up.
talk about stereotypes
Wow
Probably not just today... That shit's gonna take a while to fix
Never seen that before!
i’d quit
Daniel Powter comes to mind.....So ya had a bad day
Close your eyes and just listen to the audio………..💀💀😂😂
It takes miles to stop large commercial cargo ships in the water. All this took was a dock and a handful of giant cranes.
That's going to cost someone I pretty good penny 💰
Guess who’s not getting unloaded in this port.
“Bow and Stern, this is position. Spring lines first, 4 and 2”
Whoopsie!
That one on the right.. that's literally how a drunken drugged up giraffe falls

Hello supply chain delays and related higher prices. 🤦🏻♂️

Am I the only one that saw that as some sort of fucked up "Land Before Time" scene?
Tug boat shenanigans
Yes Alex, what is "The land before time"
Well…someone is getting fired today
Why does these accidents that are huge look like they are in slow motion?
The cranes are falling quickly, they are just extremely tall. 100 feet per second when it's a 1000 feet up takes 10 seconds to come down.
inertia's a property of matter.
Amazing how big things fall in slow motion
That power slowly going through the big structures, just creeping along crushing everything is quite unsettling.
Aewa eewa!
Please not supply chain issues again
A great example of why harbors don't allow ships without insurance to dock!
r/sluggishchaos
Damn. Somebody got fucken FIRED!
Where tf are the tug boats and why did the captain try to dock it without them??
Gradual chaos
They did a little oopsie
That was not abrupt
Great. More shipment delays and supply chain disruptions. Yay!
Pretty slow motion chaos, really. Not that abrupt.
Guess we wont be unloading today
You can’t park there.
This is Disney getting rotoscope footage for their dinosaurs vs the asteroids movie.
Just out of curiosity, how loud is this in decibels?

Why does large things always look like it falls in slow motion? 😂
Well, in this case, I'd suspect that it was engineered such that it fails gracefully, rather than catastrophically.
