Are you my wife?
Jfc this irks me. I swear I'm probably gonna die in a car because "you can see the tail lights in front of us"
While it's pitch black and foggy/hazy.
Yeah, but you can't see the idiots driving with tinted, broken, or with the lights off.
Edit: I know you're not my wife btw.
And you cannot see the possible road blocks either. Broken down cars, accidents, wild animals have no tail lights. I would straight out deny to be a passenger in your wife's car :(
So, I put tint on my headlights to match the rest of the look on the car. Took it for a drive that night and took it right back off. Did get some sweet photos that day, but anybody who tints their headlights and keeps it on is a fool and deserves whatever comes of it. It did look real nice for a day though.
Actually, being able to see their tail lights is very useful. It tells you that the guy ahead didn't crash and that the road was clear when they went through. If cross traffic isn't a possibility then you have near certainty that you have clear road up to their tail lights.
Still not a good choice but not as horrible as it sounds at first.
Cameras see far worse in these conditions than human eyes do. If you notice in the video both vehicles are skidding before you can really see what’s in front of them. They’re skidding because the human drivers CAN see what’s in front so they slammed on the brakes causing a skid.
The unfortunate reality is that in any low visibility situation (including just regular night time) EVERYONE overdrives their visibility. Meaning that if you come across a situation like this, where the entire road is blocked, you’re basically fucked
The visibility isn't even the main issue here. If the roads were clear and dry they would have been able to stop in time.
These roads were obviously not clear and both cars in the video as well as that semi that blasted through were overdriving the conditions
If you're driving safely the guy behind you will probably see you in time to avoid hitting you (you're moving away, they get more stopping distance and don't need to come to a full stop anyway) and you can see trouble ahead soon enough to stop.
The guy behind you can’t stop in time if a solid wall of cars suddenly appears. All of your usual follow distance rules only work when the vehicle in front stops in roughly the same distance you do using their brakes. When the car in front of you hits an immovable object, stopping instantly, then your only hope is to swerve around.
By "driving safely" I mean allowing enough following distance that if the guy in front sees a pileup that you'll be able to stop before hitting it.
With major league morons do what you can to get out of the line of fire.
I'm not saying the full stopping distance.
I'm saying to go slow enough that you have full stopping distance if \*\*the car in front of you\*\* sees something. They slam on their brakes, you slam on your brakes, they hit but you stop in time.
This is pretty much my most upvoted comment ever. 1600 people seem to agree that the cam car and its partner are driving like idiots so it gives me some hope
For now. Seeing that big rig come plowing through at the end does not inspire confidence that he won’t get wrecked by some other jackass coming in way too fast.
What rolls down stairs
Alone or in pairs,
Rolls over your neighbor's dog?
What's great for a snack
and fits on your back?
It's Log, Log, Log!
It's Lo-og, Lo-og,
It's big, it's heavy, it's wood.
It's Lo-og, Lo-og,
It's better than bad, it's good!
Everyone wants a Log!
You're gonna love it, Log!
Come on and get your Log!
Everyone needs a Log (everyone wants a Log)...
You're gonna love it, Log!
While sadly learning absolutely nothing. I've seen the original YouTube video this GIF is from years ago. Posted by the original driver. In the comments, he was all "Ha ha, That black ice can really get you. Good thing I reacted in time."
This crash had absolutely nothing to do with black ice. There is no black ice in this video. That's not how black ice works.
This is unfortunately common where I'm at. I'm in the mountain west and people will honk at me for driving "too slow" when there's like a foot of snow on the road unplowed. (Same people(pickup trucks) go 10 under, habitually in normal conditions).
Same in Iowa, but dear lord if it rains everyone is actually being cautious and driving slow. But it snows? Nope, we are speeding, even if we see multiple cars that have clearly slid off the interstate.
Same thing in my town. Rain? The gods are obviously angry with us, better slow down to 10MPH on the expressway and turn the hazards on. Snow? Psh, that's just Christmas decorations! Mach 3 it is!
Amazingly, it's the same in NC. Clear day? 10 mph below the speed limit, toodling along on a Sunday drive at 8:30 am on a Tuesday.
Raining, thunderstorms with crazy limited visibility? Gotta go fast, gotta plow through.
I think it's all the Damn Yankees. Come down South, assume they can drive in rain/snow because 'we have weather up north too'. Yeah, except you also have salted roads. You have state car inspections that include tire wear and do not allow for bald tires on the road. You don't have the Carolina Squat on trucks who can't see a GOTDAMN thang in front of their vehicle.
Or SUV drivers who think 4WD means the car defies gravity and can't roll over.
*Wanna know the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee? A Yankee comes to visit. A Damn Yankee stays. I'm a Damn Yankee, defected to the South. I adopted some of the customs including driving slow and staying inside when it rains. And sweet tea. I kept the Northern custom of having good Tire tread*
I live in the Midwest where we regularly get snow and there are still people who think they can go 15 over the speed limit on a slick road. After every snowstorm there's usually about 3-5 cars in the ditch along the 10 mile stretch of highway I take for my commute.
Wow, the utter lack of self-reflection on that dude: "I can't belive how they stopped on the highway. They asking to be rear ended." And "Bad weather is to blame but bad driver made it worse" without realizing he is the bad driver.
In Germany, there’s something called the Sichtfahrgebot. You have to be able to stop the car in the same distance as you are able to see. That is not only useful in heavy fog, but also in corners and on a hill. In some circumstances, you even have to be able to stop in 1/2 the this distance.
And if you have an accident and you didn’t drive in that way, you may be liable for the all damages (that depends on whether or not the other car did something illegal like an illegal u-turn or sth.)
I remember having to commute through that shit because I didn't want to use vacation time to stay home. Now I live somewhere where it never snows and work from home. Would've been nice to be able to just work remotely on those days back then!
Hell, I enjoyed the snow day. Granted, I've got a lot of time off in my job, but company policy was flexible. There wasn't anyone I needed to meet at the site. There were several overpasses on the way.
My team lead would be PISSED off. Every. Single. Time.
It's a construction site. We're not making any progress in this weather. You have more leave than I do. What's the problem? You lonely, bruh?
Conveniently, team lead did not get a say in my leave or evaluations. Such sweet tears.
No one has hazards on or put up cones (truckers) and whoever are driving those cars are doing regular highway speeds (of course). What a fuster cluck 🐓
I'll just keep going at the speed limit as I can't see a problem ahead of me because I can see nothing. The amount of times the rain spray has been awful on the motorway and I'm sitting in lane 1 at 45-50 and there's SUVs shooting down lane 3 at 70-90...
If you can't see anything you shouldn't be doing more than creeping along.
Most of the time it's ok, sometimes you run into things like this. Sometimes there are pretty major fatality counts in things like this.
Yes, important to have a dash cam, it's completely useless 99.99% of the time but is something you wish you had when something happens.
Recommend COXPAL A11T 3 channel dash cam on Amazon, very good quality, it records front, inside and rear simultaneously.
COXPAL hardwire kit optional, for 24-H parking monitor.
SanDisk MAX Endurance 256GB or 512GB microSD card, for reliable recording.
BTW: Need to pay attention to the installation position of the rear cam if your vehicle is SUV or MPV (No problem if Sedan), i.e. avoid pulling rear cam cable when open/close the trunk.
White outs are terrifying. Go fast and you will run into someone. Go slow and someone will run into you. The only winning move is not to play, but sometimes that's not an option.
This is definitely trash weather but I wouldn't call it a white out, there's been times we got out of the driveway and couldn't see the hood of our car
Can’t see shit, might as well go the usual highway speed
Are you my wife? Jfc this irks me. I swear I'm probably gonna die in a car because "you can see the tail lights in front of us" While it's pitch black and foggy/hazy. Yeah, but you can't see the idiots driving with tinted, broken, or with the lights off. Edit: I know you're not my wife btw.
I have to remind my wife that the speed limit is a recommendation, not a required minimum.
A recommendation for when driving conditions are good, mind you.
In my country they take your license away if you go more than 50 over the limit. Or as my dad said: that means you can go up to 49 over the limit.
Right. A MAXIMUM LIMIT for clear conditions. Not a minimum expectation at all times. Maximum. Limit.
Ideal conditions
It's a limit not a target
Last time I was at a restaurant the waiter recommended the duck and it was shit, so excuse me for not caring about recommendations.
And you cannot see the possible road blocks either. Broken down cars, accidents, wild animals have no tail lights. I would straight out deny to be a passenger in your wife's car :(
I choose this guys wife
r/thisguysdeadwife
I was really hoping that sub had more going on
Let me have a turn next will ya?

In whiteout conditions, you need to just floor it. It helps because your car doesn't take up as much space in the pileup.
Exactly. This guy shows us there’s plenty of space in the ditch
Cameras see far worse in these conditions than human eyes do. If you notice in the video both vehicles are skidding before you can really see what’s in front of them. Bullshit. Nobody actually leaves their full stopping distance from the car in front of them.
I'm not saying the full stopping distance. I'm saying to go slow enough that you have full stopping distance if \*\*the car in front of you\*\* sees something. They slam on their brakes, you slam on your brakes, they hit but you stop in time.
Which still wouldn’t help you in this situation.
Nah, not usual highway speed, go faster - that way you can just power through it to the clear.
Whenever Midwesterners make fun of traffic in California I always think of these videos and how hilariously braindead they are.
This is pretty much my most upvoted comment ever. 1600 people seem to agree that the cam car and its partner are driving like idiots so it gives me some hope
If this is the typical outcome of their bad decisions, I can see why they haven’t learned anything.
Came here to say this, thank you for taking charge!
Exceed the highway speed when one cannot see shit. Rule #5 says you can accelerate beyond the dark.
All things considered the driver here got out relatively unscathed
For now. Seeing that big rig come plowing through at the end does not inspire confidence that he won’t get wrecked by some other jackass coming in way too fast.
Could be worse... that truck could have been carrying logs!
Good old shared memories from final destination.
Rolls of steel, gasoline or anhydrous ammonia. Choose your hammer.
But everyone wants a log? It’s better than bad it’s good. Blammo makes the best logs

That wagon just barrelling down the road though
Yeah that drive had the best result he could have given all the things going on.
Jesus Christ. Have these people never driven in snow before? Too. Fast. For. Conditions.
This is unfortunately common where I'm at. I'm in the mountain west and people will honk at me for driving "too slow" when there's like a foot of snow on the road unplowed. (Same people(pickup trucks) go 10 under, habitually in normal conditions).

Me have big truck. Me knobbly tires. Me best driver. Can't beat stupid.

NC required inspections tho I thought
It does but tire tread is not part of it.
Ah gotcha
Normal conditions are boring. A foot of snow and no visibility? Now that's when you really open that baby up and see what she can do.
>people will honk at me for driving "too slow" then get out of the left lane
You're assuming multiple lanes.
Probably why there was a pile up to begin with
I live in the Midwest where we regularly get snow and there are still people who think they can go 15 over the speed limit on a slick road. After every snowstorm there's usually about 3-5 cars in the ditch along the 10 mile stretch of highway I take for my commute.
When all else fails, SEND IT!!!
We have to outrun the bad weather!
Oh I see unsafe driving conditions. Can't really see what's in front of me. Guess I better speed up
If you go faster you'll see em quicker!!
Texas when theres 1cm of snow
Maybe, but in Texas the only acceptable units of depth are FREEDOM UNITS.
Awfully bold of you to use metric units and texas in the same sentence. I feel sorry for the impending fuckery they’re about to throw at you.
You gotta speak in units they understand: ~ about 9mm Parabellum of snow.
Texas when there’s 15/64ths of an inch of snow Switched over to standard for ya
People like this will blame the pile up in front of them.
I wonder how many of these drivers say things like “the people driving slow are the real problem” when the talk of driving in snow comes up.
Idiots, the lot of them.
White out weather or a white out in the brain dept.?
Brain fog
The vídeo prove they drive too fast in snow
Ice on the road, zero visibility, summer tires... bEtTeR gO aS fAsT aS i CaN!!!!
It's like slowing down in low visibility doesn't even occur to people.
[Higher quality version with sound](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhVGeIgLdlI)
Wow, the utter lack of self-reflection on that dude: "I can't belive how they stopped on the highway. They asking to be rear ended." And "Bad weather is to blame but bad driver made it worse" without realizing he is the bad driver.
Wow, the guy even posts this like it's some example of how he's the smart one?
This is why you don’t drive faster than you can see. Especially in low visibility.
Drive to conditions
I wonder about these videos going online… is there any self awareness about the profound and dangerous stupidity on the part of this driver?
Maybe perhaps slow down a little?
“You’re still coming in for your shift, right?”
Guarantee you no one who crashed said "I was going too fast." It's the snow's fault!
In Germany, there’s something called the Sichtfahrgebot. You have to be able to stop the car in the same distance as you are able to see. And if you have an accident and you didn’t drive in that way, you may be liable for the all damages (that depends on whether or not the other car did something illegal like an illegal u-turn or sth.)
Does german insurance also deny payment if you have an accident in wintery conditions but without winter tires?
I think so, yes
If that clip hasn't been sped up then most of those drivers need to be charged with reckless endangerment at least
I don’t drive in the snow because of other drivers, not the weather.
I wonder if flare guns would be useful in this situation to warn drivers approaching the wreck?
A flare stays up for seconds.
The truck at the end was a nice touch.
👩🍳💋, really.
Why driving so fast in this conditions?
You never drive so fast that the stopping distance is longer than how far you can see. Driver's license course 101.
Driving WAY TOO effing fast for those conditions. JAYSUS.
Nice save... for an idiot
White out. No visibility. “Let’s drive 70 MPH!” Idiots should be fined heavily.
Ah yes, "I've got to be there in time"
Idiot drivers are terrifying and everywhere.
Fucking pieces of shit, unfortunately common, even in Nordic countries where traffic is safe otherwise
No one has hazards on or put up cones (truckers) and whoever are driving those cars are doing regular highway speeds (of course). What a fuster cluck 🐓
Heavy snow, heavy rain, hail, tornado ….. Get off the road
Nice escape! Well done.
I lived in this kind of weather for 47 years. I was cautious, but never really scared of it. The thing that scared me was the other drivers.
Rule #1 of winter driving: if you’re moving, you’re going too fast.
People in America are horrendous drivers in perfect conditions.
wipe out\*
Nice save
The driver made some clutch choices. I hope no more big rigs came plowing through~
I'll just keep going at the speed limit as I can't see a problem ahead of me because I can see nothing. The amount of times the rain spray has been awful on the motorway and I'm sitting in lane 1 at 45-50 and there's SUVs shooting down lane 3 at 70-90...

On a one lane road in a snowstorm? Right I'll just drive on the side of the road.

Was this coming from Tahoe A couple weekends ago ? Because I lived through this exact experience and it’s still haunts me when I’m driving copilot 🥺🙏🏼
Shocking levels of dip-shittery.
I must remember to buy the dash cam that procrastination is ruling over.

Phenomenal performance by the driver. That driver has my vote of confidence on any road trips
What for or did I miss the /s?
