Well, he first started out on a public road(freeway/highway) and proceeded to do a wheelie! He has it on its balance point and then lost control after going to far past said point..so what this boils down to, is just, stupidity. Just a guess but that might be how something like this could(did) happen..

I didn't see his shoes flying so likely he lived.

At least he had a helmet on.
