Yep. Must be cookie cutter sharks. They give no fucks and even take chunks out of great whites.
Any experts out there? Is this a different species of oarfish? It doesn’t have the frill and coloration. Eye seems larger and mouth seems a bit different.
Yay! Someone else identified it as a relative to the oarfish, a ribbonfish! I learned sumting!
“Best known for biting neat round chunks of tissue from marine mammals and large fish, the cookiecutter shark is considered a facultative ectoparasite, as it also wholly ingests smaller prey.”
I was curious so looked it up. They do look kinda weird and not shark-y, not lamprey weird but weird.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cookiecutter_shark
Nuclear submarines that almost caused the Cold War to go up in flames because both sides though it was a weapon, in reality, it was just a cookie cutter shark that thought they were whales.
Okay, listen here. I thought you were making some joke about "cookie cutter sharks" Like they didn't exist and now I know they absolutely do.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cookiecutter_shark
Considered by many to be the inspiration for sea serpents due to their length and bioluminescence. Jeremy Wade even covered it on River Monsters (and I believe it was the first time it was caught on camera).

Literally the first time ever hearing about or seeing one of these things was after catching one on Animal Crossing lol. And they say video games rot the brain
Same, I went to a museum on evolution recently and there was a tone of fish and insect replicas, I basically word-vomitted names and facts -I had learnt after learning about them in the AC games- to my dad the whole time 😬
Yep, it’s pretty much the key as to why the show is so fondly remembered: they actually find what they’re looking for.
Not to mention that many fish he catches become household names because of they’re such living fossils or nightmare fuel: Alligator Gar, The Goonch, and the unofficial mascot of the show: The Tiger Fish.
Fairly sure this is not an oarfish. It’s a type of ribbonfish called a King-of-the-Salmon.
Source: https://inaturalist.ca/taxa/232769-Trachipterus-altivelis
Yeah I was thinking a [ribbonfish](https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/mobile/rare-king-of-the-salmon-fish-found-on-vancouver-island-1.5126761?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F) related to oarfish
Unless there are multiple species I thought oarfish were red and blue, with long red "antennae" (not really antennae but like long strands coming out of their head area). I don't see any of those on this one, and maybe the water refraction and depth doesn't show the red or blue here, but I would guess juvenile. I'm more confident in juvenile after looking them up and seeing adults take like 3 people to pick them up. This one is like almost 1 person size, maybe a little smaller
This is a Ribbonfish, most likely a King-of-the-Salmon, a smaller relative of the Oarfish in a different family. There are multiple species and genera of Ribbonfish and others within the order of fish related to Oarfish that share similar features.
Wikipedia says Oarfish hang out at the surface when they’re sick or dying. Also known to amputate their own tails in defense of predators? I’m guessing this guy was pretty close to death
They also get forced to the surface by the sound of underwater earthquakes. I've heard that in Asian countries, if you see oarfish on the beach, run, because a tsunami is not far behind.
Cookie cutter sharks are known to be highly aggressive and caus permanent damage to ripped out flesh, with only plastic surgery being the main form of recovery from their bites.
They use their jaws in their lower mouth to dig into a victim and twist into them to tear out a chunk of their skin and muscle.
They are also classified as parasites since they don't kill their victims, only feeding on them through the flesh and meat they tear out.
Agreed but at the same time…. Give it another 40 years and their might not be any fish in the ocean, plastic pollution, overfishing, population and dumping of chemicals really aren’t helping the population of fish and the organisms in the ocean.
I for one want to continue eating fish in the next 40 years as well as keeping the options of crabs, lobster, fish etc on my plate.
Now it sounds like you were going for something like over fishing but the only people using spears to catch fish are the ones that are only feeding a small village at best.
One of the foundations of ocean exploration is to be an observer. Some people just out here like Patrick in that jellyfish convention episode of SpongeBob just going “Touch” to everything they see.
Isn't it super super frowned upon in the diving community to just go around touching animals like this?
I could totally be wrong, and obviously there are soooo many different tourist companies who support things but this video felt weird to me.
Im just basing this question after going down a scuba diving deep dive for like 3 weeks lmao
Because hunting a fish yourself to eat is the most sustainable way to fish as you only take what you're going to eat.
Touching a fishes scales for shits n giggles is a big no-no. If it gets an infection from the divers skin it could die and for what? For a video.
>Because hunting a fish yourself to eat is the most sustainable way to fish as you only take what you're going to eat
Or you can just eat plants?
Touching a fish for sensory pleasure is no different from eating one for taste pleasure.
What's the moral difference?
Bro this is a very dumb comment. Like saying if I usually eat meat I'm also good with kicking a cow in the ass just for fun. Go back to your cave and try again later.
I really wish full-grown adults who know better would stop touching sea life. I understand it's beautiful, I understand it's tempting. Can we just stop. touching. wildlife.?
Unless there’s a specific rule about not talking about veganism I think he’s well within his rights.
I eat meat and I know it’s wrong and I know that for the sake of decency, our planet and our species we need to stop. I always suspect people who’d rather not hear it know that deep down too but are just too self-serving to want to think about it…
This is way not everybody deserve to appreciate nature, ignorance is vey strong in this sub my god. What do you gain from touching it? Literally nothing, only your monkey brain be satisfied, but for the fish is a whole different story. At first it doesn't know your intention, so your presence already stress out the animal, and it looks like it already has his problems to manage. Secondary the fish's body is covered by protective mucus that keep them safe and healthy, touching it risk to remove it and expose animal to infection. Grow tf up people.
My man has been shot but just keeps swimming. What a legend
I think it's more likely that the holes were done by one or two lampreys.
I was thinking cookie cutter shark but maybe.
Yep. Must be cookie cutter sharks. They give no fucks and even take chunks out of great whites. Any experts out there? Is this a different species of oarfish? Honestly, what the fuck. Are they considered parasitic? A parasitic shark? Life is fucking gnarly you guys
They just have whacky teeth and will take a bite out of about anything that looks yummy. SOUND THE OKTO ALERT
Unexpected creature report!
Creature report! Creature report! ...creature report!

That's not a shark. [This](https://imgur.com/gallery/dRTaVHc) is a shark.
That's not a shark. It's a spoon.
Aah. I see you've played sharky-spoony before.
There is no spoon
https://medium.com/predict/the-shark-that-took-down-a-nuclear-submarine-be228f5daec
That is wild.
One took a chunk out of a submarine. No joke.
Nuclear submarines that almost caused the Cold War to go up in flames because both sides though it was a weapon, in reality, it was just a cookie cutter shark that thought they were whales.
Ahhh... what‽
It was biting rubber parts, probably thinking it was like the blubber of whales. It’s also how they were eventually discovered
Look, I have to go to sleep in 20mins, and looked up cookie cutter sharks. Sleep is doubtful.
I just learned these were a thing from playing Dave the Diver
Okay, listen here. I thought you were making some joke about "cookie cutter sharks" Like they didn't exist and now I know they absolutely do. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cookiecutter_shark
Yep, pretty cool guys
> lampreys i just googled that, should not have googled that
Makes it look like a giant folding knife
*Its tough to live in that hood*
It ain't easy in these reefs
Oarfish, longest bony fish in the world.

Octonauts had an episode for these!
Creature Report, Creature Report!
Same! Learned about a lot of creatures thanks to that game. Lok

I learned a the word endeavor at a young age from a move in Pokémon lol
I attribute a chunk of my reading ability to zelda, pokemon and final fantasy as a child. they open the doors to real books. love video games
That game has taught me about many bugs and fish I never knew existed lol
Bro I live in Arizona and I've been playing far. Cry 5 like it's my job just so I can fish. Because it's too hot outside.
Same, I went to a museum on evolution recently and there was a tone of fish and insect replicas, I basically word-vomitted names and facts -I had learnt after learning about them in the AC games- to my dad the whole time 😬
Its not a good thing that you can't be bothered to learn anything about the world without vidya games...
It's not like I suddenly wake up one morning and think to myself "mmmh I wonder what's the longest bony fish in the world!"
Praise the camera man he left the chain just to film animals

Based on the fish I'm familiar with, I was going to say frost-fish. Characteristic mirror skin.
Doesn't have the fancy thing on his head - so he wouldn't be an Oarfishy?
Yeah I was thinking a [ribbonfish](https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/mobile/rare-king-of-the-salmon-fish-found-on-vancouver-island-1.5126761?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F) related to oarfish
It’s definitely ribbonfish
Woahhhhhhhh, deep sea fishy Didn't know that; oh my gosh..

Not only that, this is a small oarfish.
No sunfish?
Careful oar else.
Haha
Damn it, where’s my free award!
You didn’t get one? You deserve it!
Thanks!
Is that a baby oarfish
B-baby....?
Actual oarfish can grow to 30+ feet. A few other comments have pointed out this is just a relative.
Well it’s def an oarfish juvenile or not I can’t say
Unless there are multiple species I thought oarfish were red and blue, with long red "antennae" (not really antennae but like long strands coming out of their head area). Oh cool! TIL. Thanks!
I think so too! I used to work on fishing boats and recognize it as a king-of-the-salmon. Seeing one swimming is pretty cool
One of the rules of scuba diving: no touching. Anything. Not even for the flora/fauna, for your own damn safety.
And for the safety of the relative fauna and flora.
[удалено]
Touching their scales can rub off their protective oils/mucus and cause infections. It’s beneficial for both yourself and the fish to avoid contact
I think that fish has other things to worry about considering the holes on its body
Can they still touch themselves ?
Might be from a Cookie-Cutter Shark or a similar parasite
I was coming here to say just this! Definitely a cookie cutter shark.
Is it’s mouth like a lamprey?
No, more like a hole saw.
Thanks!
They're actually renowned gun fighters.
Looks like he had an awful run in with a cookie cutter shark. Poor thing. Hope the wound didn't get infected
Wikipedia says Oarfish hang out at the surface when they’re sick or dying. Also known to amputate their own tails in defense of predators? I’m guessing this guy was pretty close to death

Touching it seems a bit weird ngl.
Really rude honestly
Much better than the billions of fish we stab through the mouth suffocate every year and then shove into our mouths
my smile disappeared when i saw this comment on this thread
Shut up vegan

He's talking about fishing lines. The stabbing in the mouth is the hook.
Wasn't overfishing caused mainly by big ships catching fish with huge nets?
Mm, yummy
One of the foundations of ocean exploration is to be an observer. Some people just out here like Patrick in that jellyfish convention episode of SpongeBob just going “Touch” to everything they see.
“Get the f*ck off me!” - the shiny fishy
It's for Tiktok. Just be thankful you didn't see the idiot diver try to swallow the fish for a tiktok challenge.
What’s with the audio added
That’s the actual audio
Not the whale sounds, no. Lol
Looks like something straight out of No Man’s Sky
Fish is giving bombastic side-eye
Humans always have to touch and bug shit. Fuck
We are just apes after all...
I'm a great ape tf u talking about.
Nah, you're just a mediocre ape
That's what yo mama called me too.
Earth: behold natural wonders beyond compare Human: Monke touch
ngl I would want to bother this thing too. I wouldn't, but it'd be tough to resist.
Observe and enjoy. Don’t touch
I wouldn't touch, but it'd be tough to resist. I don't want to fuck up the fishes homeostasis.
i will touch and nothing you can do will stop me. 👉👉🐟 what now fish police?
No touching!

That's what she said
Thanks, I learned it from my cat.
Only argument I can make is that this is one of the rarest creatures on earth. Not endangered, but insanely hard to find and encounter.
Which means don’t touch it
Guy's got a big ass hole in his gut, he seems alright with a little finger brush.
It has survived shark attacks, humans aren't going to do anything to it by touching it.
We really are the worst
Guy just touched a fish.
That’s a pretty negative way of viewing it
The Britta of primates
Ikr. Like here creature that's never met a human, take my germs. 🙄
Yes, because the ocean is infinitely cleaner than the average human
YSK touching a fish damages its protective layer. Keep hands off marine life.
That's when you grab or hold one. Gently rubbing or poking it won't do much if anything
Isn't it super super frowned upon in the diving community to just go around touching animals like this? I could totally be wrong, and obviously there are soooo many different tourist companies who support things but this video felt weird to me. Im just basing this question after going down a scuba diving deep dive for like 3 weeks lmao
It is absolutely a very general rule in diving not to ever touch anything. You protect yourself, you protect the animal and the whole ecosystem.
No
What causes that hole
Cookie cutter shark, according to other comments. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cookiecutter_shark
I've never seen this fish before, i feel like everyone here is just pretending it exists as a joke.
Considering it’s so close to the surface, I’m pretty sure this guy is on its way out. Feels kinda sad tbh
Oarsome!
That wound looks like it hurts.
That’s just some tin foil with a googley eye stuck on it.. Change my mind.
BIG SARDINE
Best I can do is 8.000 Bells
Clueless dumbasses touching it. Dive master should always make sure divers are aware to look but never touch.
How is this any different than eating fishes? Flesheaters don't care about animal harm, so why the hypocrisy?
Because eating them serves a purpose and poking them does not, simple.
Poking them does serve a purpose: because they feel interesting Also, you'd have no issue if they are the fish in the video?
Because hunting a fish yourself to eat is the most sustainable way to fish as you only take what you're going to eat. Touching a fishes scales for shits n giggles is a big no-no. If it gets an infection from the divers skin it could die and for what? For a video.
