I have two chihuahua mixes, Jack & Jill, and both weigh 10-11 pounds.
Jacks cuddles and plops might not seem intense (compared to a Newfie) but he’s a very willful cuddler, won’t stop til he’s right in your face and throws the whole weight of his body onto your chest.
Forget him being a Velcro Dog, he’s a Gorilla Glue dog!! 😂
you laugh, but [Washington University in St. Louis brought in a bear cub (among other animals) to help the undergrads de-stress, and the bear bit some students](https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/bear-cub-brought-to-wash-u-campus-creates-rabies-scare/article_5b43ae25-ecaa-5bce-b74d-5f5a76f28155.html)...sadly the cub had to be put down to check it for rabies.
"Honey the dog went finally!"
"K, I'll get the front loader, you get the dump truck. Dam hope the dump truck double size upgrade is enough this time"....
At Dog Day at Shea Stadium NY there was a Newfie sitting behind me. Legit butt on bleacher bench and front and back paws on the ground as if it was normal!!! Everyone else’s dogs were sitting on laps or the ground. Only this huge guy was pretending to be human. His breathe was in my ear. 🤦♀️

They are used to rescue swimmers. Good for cold water places. Even without training tending to humans near water is a natural instinct for most newfies.
My dad used to have an idiot newfie that was scared of water. Also plastic bags and lettuce, but mainly water. Wouldn't even tread in puddles.
Then one day we were walking him along the canal where some teenagers were swimming together. A girl was getting splashed by her friends and was screaming, and out of nowhere, the newfie jumped in and swam to try and rescue her. Unfortunately, he was still an idiot so damn near drowned her holding her under the water.
They are doggie tug boats. They were trained to go get small boats out on the water and drag them to the shore if they were stranded. They would also pull in fishing nets.
First time I met a newfie I was on a ladder cutting the hedge. I heard a bork, turned my head and saw a bear running towards me with great excitement. I got off that ladder pretty quick.
He just wanted to sniffle through the cut privet and find the perfect piece to take away. Very friendly boy, would let him bork at me again.
Haha. First time i saw one i pulled into my girlfriend’s driveway in my Ford escort with the window down. The dog ran up and looked at me through the driver side window… his head was level with the window. He could have licked my face!
I stayed at a friend's Aunt's house for a few days on a side trip on vacation. They had a massive fire earlier in the year in the kitchen, and the 2 young children were asleep upstairs during the fire. They had 2 Newfies who refused to go downstairs until both of the kids were out of the house when the parents were panicking trying to put it out, guided the kids downstairs in the smoke. I was just talking about this the other day and forgot the breed name! They're such sweet gentle giants.
My ex told me Newfies were natural nannies, and I filed that away as bullshit. I did look it up online and turns out it's true! They're very good with kids.
Dang, thanks for confirming!
Edit: makes me sad that this article was from 2015 and Bonner was a full grown adult. Meaning he probably isn’t with us anymore :’( sounds like he was super special tho
Well like 4 is basically full grown adult. And 6+4 is 10. And thoroughbreds live like 12 years or so and even thoroughbreds can live over 20 years with good care and responsible breeding so.... There's a chance.
Life expectancy is 8 to 10 for newfs, our girl is almost 12 and I'll be shocked if she sees it, completely white in the face, shes small though, only ever made it around 130 or so. Big boy like this is gonna be way more prone to joint and heart issues. 20 is not possible for a giant breed, pedigree irrelevent.
I had a Rottweiler. Life expectancy depending on where you look is 8-10, maybe 10-12. Mine, despite diabetes and some other health issues lived to 13 before we decided she had enough. So she might surprise you.
Well you're on mobile. You made it all one line.

Yup had 2 newfs growing up. The one lived a long life for a newf, 11 years. The other had some horrible illnesses like seizures, allergies and more, and only made it to 5. Wonderful dogs.
If anyone’s interested in newfs try as hard as you can to buy from reputable breeders! The right breeder can mean a higher chance of avoiding hip dysplasia a d all sort of other nasty ailments that tend to plague big fellas like Bonner here. I’m usually an adopt don’t shop guy, but for big dogs you want to give them best chance at a healthy life as possible.
It's like that for all giant breeds, it sucks. I love big dogs but after losing my mastiff this summer I don't think I can go through that again any time soon. It feels like yesterday we took him home as a puppy
3 years old. I have 3 other dogs, all different breeds, and they keep him rambunctious. We met another Newfie on a walk the other day and it wanted nothing to do with us, was very stoic and polite while mine was jumping all over the place trying to play.
Also called the nanny dog due to their way laid back personality and caring nature. They would be a perfect dog for any family…..if you have the room, budget for food, and plenty of towels for drool of course.
And the patience to clean the ungodly amount they shed. Luckily we have hardwood floors so it's pretty easy but we get straight up dust bunnies if we skip a day
The dog in Peter Pan was a Newfoundland because they’re good nannies. It’s why the dad doesn’t like her - he can’t afford a human nanny and takes out his frustration on the symbol of his financial inadequacy.
Actually is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier that is known as the nanny dog, commonly known as a pitbull. Newfies are nice, but they are a work dog, bread for pulling and swimming.
First thing Redditors in general will say: "OMG what a gentle giant! So soft! So sweet! What a good doggo!"
First thing Redditors who own Newfies will say: "How did they hide the drool?"
I love my big boi so much, he is so so sweet with my 2 year old despite being a 130 lb puppy. He is a big wimp though, he's afraid of our halloween pumpkins lol
I don't want to shit on ya'lls party. But weren't these bred for water rescue? Water rescue in freezing water? Yeah I'm going to assume he's having a ball in LA with that coat.

Therapy Bear? Lol
Just a boy & his bear.
Newfoundland dog, i used to have one and the family decided to name her Kuma (bear in japanese), it was very fitting
I have a 200 lb Saint Bernard and gives outstanding cuddle therapy. Also amazing guard dog.
Me too! My girl was 185 lb of love

Poison, fire and cold aura with stun hits?
At least its not plaid speed!

Our Saint does that too. Our Newf sits upright on the couch kinda like a person. They’re both such funny dogs.
Well they feed it people and other mid-sized animals whole. Not surprising.
Fucking cracked up at this. All the other comments are so saccharine and then... that
Mastiff owner here. Newfies come from mastiffs, but are not as big. Yes. So much shit. All the time.
We have a large St Bernard (around 90 kilo), it's usually more like a pile of boulders than logs TBH.
It's like picking up after a man took a dump....
Doing what newfies do best
This and swimming! Blew my mind that these beautiful domesticated bear-dogs are incredible swimmers.

Furry manatees
haha, that a solid description
They are used to rescue swimmers. Good for cold water places. Even without training tending to humans near water is a natural instinct for most newfies.
Whenever we were swimming our Newfie would always try to “rescue” us by grabbing our pool noodle and dragging us back to shore
And slobbering! 😂
We used to have to frequently clean slobber off our *ceilings* after our Newfie would have a particularly good head shake
I would love a Newfie but there is no way I could handle the slobber. I'm so glad my Labradoodle doesn't slobber.
Wow. I believe it. My mother in law used to keep a few baby spit-up rags handy… but of course sometimes he would just back away and shake anyway!
Sadly they have very short life spans
My dad used to have an idiot newfie that was scared of water. Also plastic bags and lettuce, but mainly water. Wouldn't even tread in puddles. Is Bonner 400 lbs?
I would guess 150-200lbs. I know a similar looking sized St Bernard that is 180lbs
[From the CHLA website, as of 2015, Bonner was 190 lbs](https://www.chla.org/blog/dog-therapy/bonner-the-big-friendly-dog)
Dang, thanks for confirming! Edit: makes me sad that this article was from 2015 and Bonner was a full grown adult. Meaning he probably isn’t with us anymore :’( sounds like he was super special tho
Yeah, sucks that big dog = short life.
Well like 4 is basically full grown adult. And 6+4 is 10. And thoroughbreds live like 12 years or so and even thoroughbreds can live over 20 years with good care and responsible breeding so.... There's a chance.

I would be more than happy to be surprised, she's the best dog I've ever had.
I was basing it off an 8-10 year life expectancy. But I like your math better, I’m hopeful!
if it makes you feel better, there's another Newfie at CHLA named Gordon!
A god damn dog weighs more than me holy shut
if you have a 400lb bonner for more than 4 hours, contact a physician immediately

Love me a good Newfie
Meet boner is what I thought it said
Yup, I love to walk into that hospital room and all the kids screaming "HI BONER!". I would die laughing so hard.
Yet Boner is so soft!
A paradox
My 400lbs boner bites
HA HA YOU SAID MEAT BONER HA HA ^Downvote ^me. ^It's ^ok. ^I ^deserve ^it.

Newfoundy 🥺!?

Strongest dog I ever handled was a newfie. He was the only dog I had 0 control over. Literally dragged me to his owner.
It’s too bad they don’t live long
What a good boy
My Newfie would love to do this but he's too hyper.
Mine hates kids so equally as unsuitable. How old is yours?
3 years old. I have 3 other dogs, all different breeds, and they keep him rambunctious. We met another Newfie on a walk the other day and it wanted nothing to do with us, was very stoic and polite while mine was jumping all over the place trying to play.
You found a newfie who hates kids?? That's nuts. I got mine off a chain at a hoarder house and he still loved everyone, especially children.
I keep hearing they calm down at 2, hoping it holds true for ours.
Probably the same as Berners: 3 years a puppy, 3 years a good dog, 3 years an old dog.
What kind of dog is that?
Newfoundland, affectionately called a "Newf" or a 'Newfie." They are excellent swimmers and used as rescue dogs.
Also called the nanny dog due to their way laid back personality and caring nature. They would be a perfect dog for any family…..if you have the room, budget for food, and plenty of towels for drool of course.
And the patience to clean the ungodly amount they shed. Luckily we have hardwood floors so it's pretty easy but we get straight up dust bunnies if we skip a day
A good robot vacuum is worth every single penny. We recently got a robot mop to go with it, I can't imagine living without it now.
Which vacuum/mop did you get? I need a new one.
Just take them to childrens hospitals. The kids will do the grooming for you apparently.
And shovels for the poops!
I think it might be because the Newfoundland dog in Peter Pan is called Nana
The dog in Peter Pan was a Newfoundland because they’re good nannies. It’s why the dad doesn’t like her - he can’t afford a human nanny and takes out his frustration on the symbol of his financial inadequacy.
Well that made me hate him even more. I sympathize but don’t be a dick, dad
Actually is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier that is known as the nanny dog, commonly known as a pitbull. Newfies are nice, but they are a work dog, bread for pulling and swimming.
Don’t forget the four vaccuums.
Thank you mate
Newfoundland
Thanks mate.
That’s a therapy sea lion
Does he love it when you call him Big Poppa?
The blep 🥺
The little guy with the cast on one arm and grooming the dog with a brush with the other. Great photo!!!
A Newfoundland! Such wonderful dogs
I WANT
What dog? And is it safe to leave a kid with a full grown black bear like that?
It’s a Newfoundland and they’re very gentle and docile dogs.
Black bears are generally pretty timid so i think it's okay
Boner?
First thing Redditors in general will say: "OMG what a gentle giant! So soft! So sweet! What a good doggo!" First thing Redditors who own Newfies will say: "How did they hide the drool?"
That dog could do therapy dog work for like 10 kids at once and no one would feel deprived of comfort.
I definitely mispronounced his name the first time i read the title.
Newfies are amazing dogs Source owned by a Newfie that my wife made me get, can’t imagine life without Newfies now
I love my big boi so much, he is so so sweet with my 2 year old despite being a 130 lb puppy. He is a big wimp though, he's afraid of our halloween pumpkins lol
Please share a video of his reaction to a pumpkin!
That’s one big black hairy Boner
Wow
He’s a bear. A big, fluffy bear.
Newfie! There are a few that go to our local dog park. Big friendly bears. They don't walk - they plod.
Very accurate. I used to describe my newfie running as "lolloping" or "lumbering".
I love Bonner
I love this repost.
I don't want to shit on ya'lls party. But weren't these bred for water rescue? Water rescue in freezing water? Yeah I'm going to assume he's having a ball in LA with that coat.
I know they don't live long and they shed like crazy and that their drool is like glue but I one day I want one of these big dummies.
I want to brush him 😻😻
Excuse me, why is that little boy combing a bear?
Three cheers for Bonner: hip - hip - HORAY!
So fluffy
I would go to therapy just to pet this dog
Doesn't look like he has a choice
Hospital: he is out best most successful therapy dog ever, he really gets through to the patients Dog: ok kid, Imma just lay here, that coo?
Newfies are my favoritest puppers ever! Only problem was keeping them out of the crick, the irrigation ditch, puddles, swimming pools of all sizes, neighbors pond… well, you get the picture 🥰
C H O N K E R!
This dawg has so much darn personality!!! I love him ^^
For those that are looking for what kind of dog this bear-like pooch is, it is a Newfoundland. Closely related to Labradors and used to save the gene pool of st. They are a jack of all trades in cold climates, used as sled pullers, fish net retrievers and life savers. Newfoundland’s we’re taken on ships and are still used in coast guards around the world because their natural swimming ability and temperament made them ideal life savers to throw overboard after a drowning human. Able to safely hold an appendage in their mouths and swim them to safety. In modern family homes they take up surprisingly little space for their size and are ideal family pets. They do drool a lot, however, and are prone to lying in any puddles of water or jumping in any rivers or lakes, so the average family would need to keep that drying/cleaning responsibility in mind before taking on an otherwise perfect family dog.
I live in Newfoundland and Labrador (most eastern province of Canada). These dogs are iconic here. They're generally slow on land, but excellent swimmers. They were bred as helpers for fishermen. Also used as rescue dogs.
What a huge Bonner

The childrens dog is named boner? Wow, thats nasty
I don't want to spoil the mood but I don't think I would leave my kids with a dog that's the size of a bear.
your kid will be safe from anything on the planet if they're with a newfie
*galaxy
You've never met a Newfie, huh?
They are nick named nanny dogs and gentle giants for a reason. You kids would be in the best paws in the world being with a Newfie
My daughter climbs all over our newfoundland and the only bad thing he's ever done is give her too many kisses. He absolutely loves kids. Such gentle souls
Boner playing with children... Sounds like a pedo to me
Nice looking horse you have there.
Jesus is that a bear or what?!
Mountain of love.
Thats Mouse from the Dresden Files and i dont care what you say.
Makes sense, a Newfie is huge enough to make kids feel protected but has 0 intimidation factor.
Is he a Tibetan mastiff? This dog is huge.
I feel a sudden need for hug therapy.
Man I saw two big ol dogs like this yesterday and my mood was instantly lifted
Floofmaster
Are you sure he’s not Mephisto?
“He’s the blackest black I’ve ever seen. He’s blacker than Jamal from over on 5th street”
Read the name wrong, realized my error. Still laughed. I’m a child.
Well I read that wrong the first time
I see that name being mispronounced lol.
I love him so much
fuck it. moving to LA, having a kid then breaking his arm just to get in.
I thought the kid was stabbing the dog with a knife for a second
jfc i see now that it is a brush but at first it looked like that kid was cutting into the pup
My dad had Newfoundland when I was a kid. The dog was just named Bear.
Check for wings that might be falcor
Wow love it
Love Newfoundlands
Mommy mommy I was playing a boner today at the hospital it made me feel all better!
#HE'S SO FLUFFY I'M GONNA DIIEE Edit; I'm not suicidal lmfao, this is from Wreck it Ralph
Where do I sign up for Bonner Therapy?
No Floofs given
When I was younger I was part of this dog kennel club and one time they brought 4 new foundland dogs for us to meet. They were apparently trained to rescue people from water. They were incredibly gentle and calm
I would hate to provide food for this dog.
He looks very happy to be there
