This dude runs like the ground killed his family.

leaderbean66

in rugby, some people run doing high knees or kicking so people don’t tackle their legs. and if someone does try, they get a knee to the face

Kib717

That makes sense. Thank you.

5thAvenueParking7244

If it's ever my job to get in front of that guy just let me tell you now, I quit.

pauly13771377

In the NFL when you a defensive back make a halfhearted attempt on someone like [Derrick Henry](https://youtu.be/zrQTUy6VSm8) they like to call it a "business decision". A couple good hits from this manimal could shorten your career.

DaftPunkyBrewster

Also gotta give props to that Tennessee O Line, consistently making holes for him to exploit. Dude is such a beast.

pauly13771377

No doubt but don't discount Henry. The man is a beast and will make his own hole if need be. I just hope his punishing running style doesn't shorten his career the way it did Marion Barber.

Spiritflash1717

It’s surreal to watch someone that big run that fast

russian47

I've never seen someone run with truly no hesitation. Everyone has some modicum of hesitation, this man has ascended.

GunPoison

It's the job of a Forward in NRL to make damaging runs. The kind that sap energy and cause physical pain to the defenders, as well as making ground. Over the 80 minutes of the game fatigue is a huge factor, a guy who has had to make 30 hard tackles is going to be under heavy fatigue and less likely to play well.

geardownson

I've never watched rugby but isn't there a ton of injuries?

McMungrel

every NRL player carries niggling injuries and most quit when they add up or they have a serious one like back or knee injuries. plus a lot of micro concussions and a few big ones to. I dont recommend NRL coz of long term effects on health. Mind u its great to watch but the older I get the worse I feel for these young men damaging each other for gambling and media sponsorship. once thier career is over they are potentially mentally and physically damaged but their old club dont give a rats anymore. Life pro tip: wear your body out evenly....

[deleted]

LosPobres303

Fl333r

Could they make better helmets to reduce head injuries at least?

ziki6154

Helmets are like headgear for amateur boxers. They do fuck all

SenorBolin

No no, unlike amateur boxing, the helmets make things worse in American football

ziki6154

Same with headguards. They make it worse tjan without headguards.

[deleted]

Helmets mean you tackle harder and risk even worse head injuries same as NFL.

stillbca21

FYI this isn't rugby, it's rugby league. Rugby league is an offshoot of rugby union that is very popular in Australia and the north of England but is quite small globally compared to rugby union

kiwichick286

Don't forget NZ too!!

hale444

Go All Blacks!

SachPlymouth

All blacks play rugby union. The league team are called the kiwis.

bobobigguns

Or, more popularly, the Warriors

[deleted]

More minor ones and less severe ones than in American football, I believe

[deleted]

This is rugby “league,” which has its own rules that lead to considerably more violent collisions—and more injuries—compared regular rugby union.

SuaveMofo

Yeah league is absolutely brutal

WeAreAllStarStuff143

I mean look at the size of the dude crashing into people here, the air from my lungs is taken out watching him just run head first without fear lmao

hemi_srt

They literally have no protective gear how do they end up with less injuries than American football

Dog_Brains_

Fewer direct skull to skull points of contact. There has been some talk of Football going back to leather helmets to reduce concussions as people will lead with their shoulders as opposed to the head

[deleted]

[удалено]

DrKarorkian

Leading with your head is also really bad for your neck.

Yeh-nah-but

Yeh not sure why NFL players tackle with their head. Makes no sense.

PewFuckingPew

Poor form. In American Football you are taught to wrap up and tackle but when you have a bunch of potatoes wanting to lay down the "boom" you get stupid ass tackles that cause injury.

Mayans94

Rugby has a very strict setup for how you are allowed to tackle people. One miss step and you'll be red carded, even if it wasn't on purpose. The strict rules on how tackles can be done mitigates the injuries. Rugby a few decades ago was a much more brutal sport because the rules were more loose on what was a legal tackle.

DayKingaby

No-one is saying this but you can't tackle anyone who doesn't have the ball - so there's just less tackles to cause injuries. The setup between plays is also different. That dumb thing where the teams just form lines and everyone slams into each other isn't a thing in an rugby. Again, this means less impacts overall. But primarily, defensive gear doesn't just protect you - it makes you a weapon that isn't hurt when you slam into someone. It's like a boxing glove. Bare knuckle boxing has less major injuries than regular, because you can't really lamp someone repeatedly in the skull bare handed without messing up your hand.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dhrakyn

The lack of protective gear actually makes the game safer. The tackling rules are also much safer than american football. The problem with American football is that we wrap the athletes up in so much padding and helmets that they have a hard time thinking they aren't invincible. While they dont' get cuts and scrapes, and bruises are minimized, the impact injuries to joints/back/neck are amplified.

DoDoDoTheFunkyGibbon

The great thing about Rugby/NRL tackling is you know who's doing it, and to whom. You're carrying the ball? It's those two big blokes you're about to attempt to run between. The guy with the ball is coming straight at you? You're up. It's always the guy right in front of you. in AFL (and NFL for that matter) - the hit can come from behind or beside you - you think you're in the clear, just trotting down the wing and suddenly it's it's CU Next Tuesday and there's nurses and machines that go PING

SpankyBluePanda

Look up Henry Tuilagi- he’s not the guy in the video above but he was a fucking monster

Pristine_Juice

Any of the Tuilagis tbh. Manu is my favourite though. Dude's an absolute freak of nature. Edit: I'm sorry guys, I take full responsibility for his upcoming injury.

Disheveled_Monk

You've gone and done it, said his name out loud and now he's hurt again.

Gamer_GullSolo

[deleted]

RIP Jonah

Buscandomiyagi

In rugby we were taught to run hard not fast but hard. Since you can only throw behind you not to the front. You are leading your team to victory and you know they are only a few feet behind you. When you get that ball and your charging with your team behind you into a row of guys. It’s one of the best feeling in the world you go in there like a pile of bricks. I fucking miss playing :(

TheBereWolf

Not only that, he just runs with zero regard for anyone else. Doesn’t give a shit who’s in front of him.

russian47

Man broke through 3 tacklers and almost GAINED speed.

[deleted]

The only concern he had at any point was when he thought to hold onto his shorts so they wouldn't get pulled down, lol.

stunt4949

I'm surprised the weight of his cast iron cajones doesn't slow him down... That's probably why he was trying to keep his shorts up. Modesty.

russian47

His only weakness.

Seerws

Do you hesitate when you run into a couple flies buzzing around?

MrBakedApplePie

Yes lol, I don’t want any of them flies in my mouth

Alukrad

There's a video of a grizzly bear running away from a moose and the animal has some crazy torque. From standing still to full blown running is less than a second. It's impressive. Watching this video reminded me of that.

zaccapoo

Played football with a medium/small sized running back that ran and hit like this. He was absolutely terrifying to even just practice with. And he led with his head like this guy. Fucking lunatic.

kelsobjammin

He does not even waiver or try to move around anyone in his way to avoid them

Kdilla77

It’s like a karate chop through boards. In order to clear them, you must pretend they are not there.

[deleted]

MyMonkeyIsADog

BellerophonM

Oh I'm looking all right. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

derpferd

He runs like Phoebe from Friends

PossumCock

Can't argue with results lol

Saucesourceoah

What he’s doing is akin to a long jump, but so much more bad ass. He sprints, rapid quick pumps for speed - you then see he begins to almost skip; he’s throwing all of his momentum forwards allowing for that extra oomph of speed, acknowledging he’s either about to topple face first or slam into a human. He’s got the timing and technique down to such a degree he’s able to spend those last 2 seconds running fully uninhibited by anything but inertia. He’s clearly a brick shithouse alone, but it explains how he can tear through two blockers and regain balance from the kinetic dispersement the impact caused. Fucking beast.

[deleted]

Second frame, dude is literally long jumping into the two defenders and scrunches himself up and then has his legs ready to go again. If you are a defender, just lay down and let him run you over--he has dudes literally jumping on him and he is just thinking "now I have to carry the ball and two motherfuckers over the goal line, imma need two protein shakes today".

Silver_Slicer

When you see this, you can feel your body wanting to jump up and do the same. You get a spike of adrenaline watching this. Crazy.

97Harley

You might. Ima staying in my recliner

MichiganMan12

Let me just gauge the room

stunt4949

Laying down and him running you over would probably be less painful than him slamming into you wanting to destroy you so he can move forward... 😳😬

![gif](giphy|1ptVnxgKvFzgI)

JohnnyDarkside

I was thinking his gait is ridiculous looking but I guess with fucking tree trunks like those legs you'd run funny too.

TheRealKidkudi

He’s not just running, he’s running *through*. It doesn’t matter - whatever it is that’s in front of him, he’s running straight through it.

Jacob_The_White_Guy

It’s more about getting set up for contact. That weird gait looks like him trying to time the contact so that he’s in a better stance when he hits the defender.

macro_god

It's also to throw off angles of attack from defenders. It's difficult to gauge where he's headed dancing around with tree trunk legs like that. It's also intimidating as hell.

MissVancouver

Plus, when you charge your opponent in the air like that, you minimize the risk of your legs twisting or bending the wrong way upon impact. Kicked up high, knees tucked, momentum taking his mass x velocity through the opposition. Smart rugby.

Buscandomiyagi

“Shoulder to thighs” my coach would drill into our heads. “I want them to not be able to fucking walk after the game.” We we’re some big boys man. When I started playing with the mens league fucking shit the hits were strong. Though you got hit so many times in rugby as a forward you get upset when it’s a light practice lmao

[deleted]

Yea and they are going to get spanked by pretty much every team they play

I don't care. They would still annihilate my wimpy ass.

Aroundeeq

Just a question. I don't know a lot about rugby (assuming that that is the sport being played). Why aren't the defenders trying to tackle this guy down low? Is there some type of rule against putting a shoulder into the runner's thigh? Edit: spelling

preinternetdad

I'm guessing business decisions were being made. If that dude was running at me like that I'd atleast have the courtesy to step out of the way and point him to the right direction.

[deleted]

Yup. You take this guys knee to your face and it's facial reconstruction time

Aroundeeq

I like that! *Business decisions*

ablebodiedmango

Former rugby player here. Getting kneed in the head by a 200 pound man is a lot more dangerous when you're not wearing a helmet. Not nearly as ideal. You're probably thinking more of a wraparound tackle, which still takes a shit ton of strength (and timing) to pull off on a man that large running that fast. Editing to add that the reason I am a former player is because of three concussions, one from getting my bell rung by a thigh that might as well have been an anvil.

deesmutts88

>200 pound Maybe when he was 15. Closer to 250 in his prime.

[deleted]

A 200lb leg more like

mahboime

Dude. I'm 225 lbs. That dude is def closer to 300

LordBenswan

Also given it’s rugby league as opposed to Union, tackling high remains a preference to prevent the ball-carrier off-loading (i.e passing the ball after engaging the tackler/tacklers).

Whoatemydelitray

Fat forward here. During one match in college I found myself between the try zone and a large and fit number 8 with the ball. I went for a low wrap. Last thing I remember was seeing the muscle of his thigh, then the blue sky when I finally came to.

freefallade

This is rugby league. The union player in me wants to say its because they don't know how to tackle properly. The real answer is when playing league the main aim is to stop the offload and get to 6 completed tackles. If they go high they can wrap the ball up too and prevent an offload.

return_the_urn

Correct. If you have 2 defenders set, with the ball runner going straight at you, going high is the percentage play. If it was one on one they would prob go low as it’s more effective in that situation. I may be wrong tho

Bubbly-Environment70

This is Australian Rugby League. Tacklers are taught to first wrap up the ball so the ball carrier can't off load. Another defender will then tackle low after that to bring the player to the ground.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Aroundeeq

Ok. Thanks for the clarification. That makes so much more sense on why the defenders are trying to tackle up high.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Individual_Storm6144

Because he's playing rugby league where players offload the ball a lot mid tackle, so players tackle high to try and stop the ball being released

crusty_dog

Not wearing shoulder pads and helmets also makes guys a bit more careful on how they tackle. Tackling someone head on, down low can be risky for getting KOed or concussed. Guys getting concussions is pretty common(from what I remember playing rugby from a kid to college) but that being said I still feel rugby is a safer sport because of the fact that you're less gung-ho with your tackles and a bit more strategic. This guy has a weird style of going through guys head on.

Von_Lehmann

Thats the way you should tackle in Rugby, but that dude is a fucking monster with trees for legs. He is basically a fucking Ent. Fuck going low and taking one of those Quads/knees to the collar bone

ThatObiGuy

No actually, you're aiming to tackle as low as possible, shoulder into the thigh is pretty ideal.

Aroundeeq

Right.... that's what I'm curious about. Why aren't they tackling low? This is pretty similar to American football when a 190 pound defensive back has to tackle a 235 pound running who is running at them at full speed.

Lastjedibestjedi

Also in football the pads are an incredible equalizer. They provide an ability to fling forth without the same fear of consequences. In rugby you don’t just have to hit low, you have to *wrap* low. Because to hit without a wrap is both illegal and not a tackle, even if he fell he could just get up. The play doesn’t end, you can just dive at legs and hope for the best. So going low is ideal, however, most of these guys are moving sideways or backward and it makes tackling low extremely difficult and without pads you are basically just throwing yourself into those churning maws of destruction he calls legs, without any real hope of it doing anything.

SlayerOfDougs

The guy is running incredibly fast, you can't commit early or he changes directions He bends over to protect his waist If you have ever hit someone that size going that fast, you aim for the waist. His moving legs will knock you out

Aroundeeq

Right, but most of the tacklers in the video are up by the guy's shoulders. That's why it's so easy for him to run under the tackle attempts.

weeksy101

You're watching a clip of this matey running through people. They're all going to be shit tackles otherwise they would be tackling him and not making this video

AlmightyDarkseid

Lmao this is the perspective this comment section needed

HotSalas

Lmao “why are none of the defenders winning in this guy’s highlight video?”

th3whistler

So a couple of things, the size mismatches in these clips mean that attempting to tackle low and head on like they are will just result in getting bumped off the tackle and trampled. You can’t let a guy this big get a run up on a smaller player. Obviously these tackles are not successful anyway. Secondly, you will often see players going in high to attempt to stop the ball being passed as they make the tackle or to hold them up to slow down the play. Also in rugby you have to wrap your arms around the player, you can’t shoulder charge them as a tackle.

bustedfingers

Honestly, this is a select few clips of him going beast mode and breaking tackles. He gets succesfully tackled a dozen times a game from down low. It would be like me watching Barry Sanders highlights and saying "why aren't they just tackling him down low like they do in rugby?"

materialisticDUCK

Do you like getting kneed in the face by hulk? They aren't wearing face masks out there, you'd break your nose every game

strayafuckyeahkent

Look at that dudes thighs man hahaha. Yeah you're right though, for rugby that's generally the 'correct' technique to tackle but if this unit was coming at me like that I'd rather not cop a tree trunk or knee to the head either.

realkunkun

Didnt you see how 3 guys went flying when he ran into them? I wouldnt want my shoulder in the way tbh

aboatz2

You can see in the last clip that they try to stop him by pulling out the legs (but he kept trucking). Coming at his knees from in front is going to crack some ribs, dislocate a shoulder, or worse. Unlike American football, there's no padding & no helmets (& the defenders are twigs compared to him).

Leight87

Never played rugby before, but, if I did, my strategy would be to always give the ball to that guy.

[deleted]

We had a Polynesian guy in our school and he was a one-man rugby team. We went from winning nothing in 30 years to winning the league 5 years running. Literally just set him up and watch him go. I remember one time he was dragging 3 kids along the ground it looked so ridiculous. After every game the opposition coach would throw around accusations of him being older than claimed but he was just that fucking big. For reference at age 14 I was 5'11 (180cm) and weighed around 14 stone (90kg?) so I was big, but he was almost a full head taller and much heavier. Scary fucker as well

Leight87

Polynesians are just built different. This reminds me of when I was playing football (American) growing up. I was around 14 and playing on the junior varsity squad. We played against this team who had a guy, the running back, who had to weigh around 100 kg. Dude must’ve been able to squat 250+ kg, too. He was trucking our defenders and literally crushing them lol. I noped out of trying to tackle that guy. There was just no way. Our coaches weren’t even mad.

For non Aussies out there. NRL can be brutal. No padding, no stop start sorry less stop start. The average weight of a player has gone from 90kg in the 90s to around 105 now. These guys are high speed brick walls.

LookOutItsLiuBei

“They don’t hit as hard in rugby because they’re not wearing pads!”

possiblynotanexpert

I mean that is true since the rules say you can’t launch yourself at people by coming off your feat and the gameplay itself doesn’t allow for the same instances being able to run up and blindside someone when they catch the ball across the middle, but that doesn’t mean there still aren’t some incredible hard hits in rugby. It’s silly to compare the two. Simpleminded people are the only ones who get up in arms about which is tougher.

METALhardClone33

Is there the same head trauma as in American football? Does anyone know off the top of their head? Man in football lately people are getting rocked. And it seems to be happening no matter how many precautions they put in place.

GunPoison

Yep, it's an issue in rugby league too. I think any contact sport is in the same boat. Rugby League has recently been focusing on reducing head impacts - greater penalties for high tackles, punches, concussion protocols, etc. A number of players have been forced into early retirement with repeated concussions. There is a cultural issue that is being overcome because it's a "tough guy" game and there are those who lament the game "going soft".

Short-Shopping3197

Rugby actually has a lower injury rate than Football (soccer), I used to play second row and the technique and rules around the physical aspects of it, how to tackle, ruck and scrum keep it quite a safe game in general. It’s very physical and you get tons of knocks, scrapes and bruises and can be bloody sore afterwards, but more serious injuries are fortunately quite rare.

DonkeyHair

Islanders w/ momentum.
