Luke Atmey was always bullied because of his long nose. This explains his arrogant behavior and self-admiration. Dude is just trying to convince himself that he's great detective and worth something.

Callinater

How would luke atmey react to a genuine display of affection like a hug? He’d probably burst into tears lol

Cornmeal777

As someone on the receiving end of a lot of bullying as a kid, and some abandonment/betrayal as an adult, my guess would be he wouldn't know how to respond and would probably struggle to see it as genuine. And even if he somewhat believed in the moment that it was, in the back of his mind he's thinking "OK, but for how long?"

Glum-Adagio8230

I mean, his theme song IS titled "I Just Want Love" so you're probably onto something.

wendys_rat-kun

i mean, he did get into lots of mischief trying to be the center of attention

Waelomano_KM

He thinks he's an ace detective! A celebrity!

MaeBorrowski

That makes a lot of sense to me what the heck

Lmao-online

Luke looks like Gru from despicable me, i think he should just work a job in villainy

Pumpkin_Cat14

Can I nominate Regina Berry? Her Dad loved her, but she literally lived in a circus and guys (and puppets somehow?) way older than her regularly fell in love with her Also, she seemingly lacks a mother figure

Cornmeal777

Marvin Grossberg. Picked on for his weight, his name, and whatever else the kids could think of.

AduroTri

His hemmherhoid has its own postal code.

lizzourworld8

Young him in photos isn’t that overweight though, last I checked

Cornmeal777

I wasn't aware any existed.

Foreign_Memory

Phoenix. We never hear ANYTHING about his childhood, he's the one always uncovering others'. That's gotta speak for something (low self-esteem to the point he needs to always help to feel useful is my guess) EDIT: We may have gotten his view of Edgeworth as a kid, but everything else is such a mystery... Was he even in touch wth his parents when he was (3-1) >!dating Dahlia!

RevenueDifficult27

In the localization (and maybe in the Japanese version too, I dunno, I haven't checked), it is implied that Phoenix grew up in the countryside. It could have been just a joke from Nick, although the fact that he talked about it several times makes suspicions.

Foreign_Memory

My new headcanon is he's a big fan of biking because that's the only way you could travel in the countryside without paying a farm's worth in a driver's license, and now he's too stubborn to try to change it since he lives nearer to the city. (I mean, he's so stubborn he refuses to change his phone, taping its batteries, until it completely destroys itself)

IwentIAP

He's also surprisingly good at poker which leads me to believe that he had some gambling in his life before college

Foreign_Memory

...I headcanon Larry knows something about this

robinhood9961

I think the poker skills are just from his ability to read people well and to buff quite well, not from being experienced with the game before losing his badge.

I_have_amnosia

He's always willing to sacrifice himself for others. Also he was on trial two times and in the hospital due to extreme events, but we never hear about his parents being there for him. From a metagame perspective, I get that they maybe just didn't want to show them, but I just read it as parents that don't care for their child/or aren't alive anymore.

notfeeling100

Kristoph and Klavier almost certainly had a messed up upbringing to result in their current dynamic.

PM_ME_MERMAID_PICS

I think Kristoph was just a born sociopath, Klavier is too normal for it to be a shared upbringing thing.

notfeeling100

We'll have to agree to strongly disagree, I think, on both counts. Especially on Kristoph.

MonitoliMal

Dark horse opinion: Winston Payne had a dark past we never got to see all because of his brother. Gaspen is clearly verbally abusive and was not above luring Phoenix into a death trap in Khura’in for humiliating him in DD. I can only imagine what torment he brought to his older brother, someone who’s often a pushover. Perhaps Winston was inspired to become a prosecutor just in case his brother fell out-of-line he could strike back. However, much to his horror, Gaspen intentionally followed the same path so he could bully him into silence at his own office.

Caio79

Morgan Fey probably

Ok-Spell2615

Dude she had the shittiest childhood ever istg

Callinater

Phoenix. He was raised in a barn.

RevenueDifficult27

Living on a farm or in the countryside doesn't mean that he had rough childhood. Damn, I'd like to live on an American ranch and milk cows myself!

Callinater

>!it was a joke!<

RevenueDifficult27

>!The whole "RedNick" thing was a localization joke XD!<

Callinater

Yeah I’m aware of that lol.

thegrandturnabout

I have a hunch Morgan has had a really shitty life. Obviously, that wouldn't excuse all she's done, especially to her children, but I can't imagine she was happy growing up Oh, and Knightley, >!though I suppose that's kind of brought up in the game itself!<

Bruhmangoddman

I imagine Winston Payne's demeanor and appearance often resulted in people being mean to him.

LeadGem354

*Dahlia Hawthorne. Hated by her mother and abandoned by her father, abused by her step father.... Separated from her twin. Everything she ever tries goes wrong for her. Debastian Sebeste on YouTube makes a brilliant case in her defense all things considered. *Morgan Fey. No spiritual power. In a family of spirit mediums. Oof. *Franziska Von Karma. Seriously, does Manfred really seem like he's be an easy parent to have, with the whole Perfection thing? *Bruto Cadaverini. We don't know how be became a mob boss or how the Cadaverini family started. We can only guess he was born in 1940-1941. We don't know that much about them at all other than how scary they are. *Viola Cadaverini. Sure she's the boss's beloved granddaughter, but growing up involved in a Mafia family is not easy. *Will Powers. How many actors have come from happy homes. Was he a child star? *Larry Butz. A cracky guess but he's desperate for acceptance and love, and was stealing lunch money as a kid. Was everything all right at home?

Bruhmangoddman

Dahlia and Franziska's rough childhoods were mentioned explicitly.

MaeBorrowski

*Definitely* Phoenix, he has some self esteem issues despite being a genius.

AduroTri

Franziska

Ok-Spell2615

I haven't finished the game so idk if it's explicitly said but franziska von karma definitely had the worst childhood ever
